DOOM 34: A Firsthand Account of the Top-Secret Mission that Launched Operation Desert Storm

Rate this book
DOOM 34 is the first behind-the-scenes, insider's recounting of a high-stakes mission that changed the course of modern combat. It combines the fast-paced, breathless development of a highly classified, innovative weapon with the selection and training of untested that executed this top-secret, Black Ops mission in the run-up to Operation Desert Storm. A mission the pushed the limits of human endurance and mechanical design.

Code-named "Senior Surprise" and nicknamed "Secret Squirrel," the mission selected 57 airmen (only one of which had any real combat experience) to fly seven B-52s that were well past their prime on a 35-hour, non-stop flight that was plagued with unforeseen complications from the moment of take-off.

Trey Morriss was the electronic warfare officer on one of the B-52s--DOOM 34--and had a front row seat to what went down. This book focuses on his experience along with his seven crewmen.

One of the most striking revelations in Doom 34 is the account of how Operation Desert Storm began with a historic long-range strike by B-52 bombers. The book highlights how these aircraft launched one of the longest combat bombing missions in history, demonstrating both strategic reach and technological capability. What makes this detail particularly compelling is the realization that the same B-52 platform remains a crucial component of the United States’ military power today. By connecting the opening moments of the Gulf War with the aircraft’s continued relevance decades later, the author effectively illustrates the enduring impact of this iconic bomber on modern warfare. This insight not only deepens the reader’s understanding of the conflict but also emphasizes how long-standing military technology can evolve and remain essential across generations.
