While the premise of this book isn’t especially exciting, the characters are everything. The build was excellent.

Chasing Ghosts grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go until long after I closed the book. Jason Prugar has crafted a gritty, character-driven mystery that blends noir sensibilities with a deeply personal story of loyalty, secrets, and betrayal.
Garrison Chase isn’t your typical hardboiled PI, he’s got the grit and instincts, sure, but there’s a worn, human edge to him that makes his choices feel raw and real. The book opens innocently enough, with Chase just trying to enjoy his birthday at a local bar with his brother Donny and best friend Jed. But when a mysterious figure named Cahill storms in, threatening Jed’s livelihood, things take a sharp turn into dangerous territory.
What follows is a relentless spiral into old debts, family entanglements, and organized crime, with Chase trying to protect his friend while uncovering truths that maybe should’ve stayed buried. The pacing is tight, and the stakes keep escalating but what really worked for me was the emotional weight of the story. This isn’t just about saving a bar; it’s about what we owe to the people we love, and what we’re willing to risk for them.
Prugar writes tension masterfully, but he also knows when to let moments breathe. There are quieter scenes that deepen the relationships especially between Chase and Jed, that make the consequences of their choices hit even harder. And the exploration of how the past can creep back in and change everything? That part was chilling and beautifully handled.
The final act was especially strong intense, surprising, and emotionally charged. By the end, I was left thinking about the people in my own life, and the lines we all draw between loyalty and self-preservation.
If you’re a fan of modern noir or just love a mystery with real emotional depth, Chasing Ghosts is a must-read. I’m definitely keeping an eye on what Jason Prugar writes next.

I haven't gotten the chance to read the first two yet, but I think I want to go back and read them. Garrison is pretty cool. I really enjoyed the connection with him & Jed. Donny too. A solid bond through adversity. A good mystery to solve too. I was honestly surprised at who it turned out to be. The one doing the backing. I totally expected it to be someone else. Very nice twist. I recommend!.
