WARNING: Due to graphic language and disturbing content, this book is intended for MATURE READERS ONLY.
Midian, Tennessee is the site of a gradually deepening apocalypse. Demons haunt the town, causing unexplainable deaths that leave local law enforcement mystified. Demon hunter Lafayette Hendricks and Sheriff's Deputy Archibald "Arch" Stan are on the case, however, and with the aid of their significant others and a pair of demonic Officers of Occultic Concordance, they'll chase down every lead they have to find the killer...until they uncover something utterly unexpected. For something dark and twisted has come to Midian with one evil intention: the desire to corrupt innocence utterly and completely...
...something that will burn the very world around them to ash.
Robert J. Crane was born and raised on Florida's Space Coast before moving to the upper midwest in search of cooler climates and more palatable beer. He graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in English Creative Writing. He worked for a year as a substitute teacher and worked in the financial services field for seven years while writing in his spare time.
While this series is disturbing on many levels, it is also a series that I am glad that I've read and will continue to read until the brutal, blood end. Many of the characters are flawed, some are just evil and the demons are enough to make any lover of horror stories cringe.
Mr. Crane has said that this is his least popular series and as such is on the back burner in order of writing, publication and release; book 8 was tentatively scheduled for 2019 and has been pushed back until 2020 and I'm disappointed. I'm not sure how many more are planned, but I'd like to finish the series before I die so I hope he'll change his mind.
Mr. Crane, because of this series you have a new fan who plans to read your other series. The next one will be the second least popular.
The characters are fascinating and unpredictable, I gave this book four stars. I first thought Henricks, Arch and Starling were interesting but Alison And Erin also have their moments. Having fun with banter between the characters, they are hilarious even facing danger, they have me laughing outloud. Stands to reasons, there would be different levels of demons. Someone finally got that. Hope next story is as entertaining.
My sleep is all screwed up from reading Southern Watch series. Corrupted just made it worse because I couldn't put it down, reading it till daylight. The characters, Arch, Hendricks, Alison, Erin and Duncan are all fleshed out nicely. I am glad that Lauren has joined, possibly because Hendricks always seems to need a doc. No reader of this genre won't be disappointed. Fabulous read!
A very good addition to the series, though this one feels a bit more grim then the previous ones. Less of a 'pulp' feeling and dabbing a little in the vicinity of horror. Perhaps it's the theme of the main monster, or the fact that there's quite a lot of gruesome descriptions of dead bodies, or maybe more sex scenes than the last time.
This was an Inprovment on #2 I enjoyed the Dr's character and the night riders. However the section with the track to & action in the 'lost' town was rather drawn out and lumbering. it seemed like it needed more editing and polishing. I would read book 4 but mainly to find out what specific incident put Arch on the Dr's shit list.
I was a bit late to the SW party but like his others books, these are brilliant. I read a lot of genres, some even dark, these are wonderfully twisted and I'm loving them. Demons causing havoc, Midian being dragged apart and a bunch of folk trying their damndest to sort it before it all goes to hell.
I have read the Girl in The Box and Out of the Box and really enjoyed them. This book is definitely for mature readers. Not my type of book. Too much bad language for me and sex. I don't mind some of that, but this was to much. My husband has read more in the series and is stopping he said it gets worse.
Wow all the controversy in this book! Thrilling! I would love to see the Southern Watch series made into a movie or a mini series about Midian. Of all the demons that were killed, and all them were awesome, the best kill was Micki. ( I know I misspelled it). He really got what he deserved😆!! Of course the author left me hanging! I can't wait for the next book.
the carnival has come town and by golly it was gonna be fun. well, that's not what the OOC tells Hendricks. there is something in the wind, Duncan tells him, and it is so bad. they must make a road trip to a place that will give them the answers. answers destructive to Arch
I’ve read three in this series is so far. I don’t know if I will finish the series or not. I like the characters and the setting is interesting. These books are for mature audiences only, as there is a lot of sex and violence. A lot, and there seemed to be more in each succeeding book. This is why I will probably not finish the series.
Fascinating. Lots of rough language, murder and mayhem. Just like the other two books.. It takes a lot of action to protect a town from being destroyed by demons.
The author seems to be getting much better. Fewer errors in grammer and spelling. The story itself seems to be even more compelling despite the whiplash from the character personalities.
This series is really holding my interest. Each book stands well on its own, but adds to the overall story line in a smooth, coherent way. The new characters added in this book, specifically the doctor and her daughter are terrific!. Book 4, here I come.
Four stars for the characters that are still developing after three books. The cursing is crazy I use to cuss but never so much that every other word started with the f bomb and I think a true author could.come up.with better lines.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
Always an interesting read. #3 continues the tale of a demon hotspot and the people who are trying to save their town. Some humans, some demons, lots of blood and interesting action.
Turns out more than you can imagine! And it looks like they're all showing up in Midian, and there are more arriving every day! There is so much happening that the characters hardly have time to take a breath. More people are brought into the circle, becoming aware of what is actually happening and joining the good fight. I'm not sure how much more this town can take, but I sure am going to find out!
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, and this one started off well. It picks up where the second book left off but included helpful reminders of what has happened up until now, not quite a stand-alone book but enough information to jog my memory. Like the other books, it includes an individual story with a conclusion but is part of a longer ongoing drama that is the series. The character development was good in this one, with a lot about deputy Arch's wife Allison revealed, additional hints about the enigmatic Starling, the introduction of a mystery surrounding Arch's youth, and Sheriff Reeve beginning to question his faith in Arch. However, for some reason, this novel just did not sustain my interest the same way the other two did. I found a few tiny inconsistencies in the story, the pacing occasionally seemed off, and I felt like the story sidetracked with the subplot based on the mysterious deaths, which should have played a supporting role. Perhaps I wasn't reading this at the right time for me.
I am telling you that this series just keeps getting more and more exciting! At first, I was a little skeptical about reading these books but my daughter really wanted to challenge me to get out of my "westerns only" reading and try something new. Well, now I can honestly say I am glad I did. This writer, Mr. Crane, is darn talented. It is just sad you can't find him in every bookstore but only online. I would like to see him everywhere because he definitely deserves it. I have to say, so far, Corrupted has been my favorite book. It has a lot of surprises in it, good and bad, and the bad guy this time is pretty sick! I swear every time I read these books, it is like there is a movie playing out in my mind. It is really easy to picture the scenes throughout the book. I really enjoy that Arch's wife has a more major part in this book. There are also some pretty funny parts too. I really like how the whole story seems to be progressing; but I still think the Sheriff should have a more vital part with the gang. But all in all, Corrupted was so good with super realistic fight scenes that the bad language really took a backseat for me! I have give this one five stars!
My Review (Daughter's Review)
What I love the most about Robert J Crane's writing is his originality. Trust me, some of the bad guys in this book you will probably never find them in any other demon genre. You know you are going to get something totally unexpected and more than likely, it will be hilarious. I just love how Mr. Crane was able to take something so innocent and healthy and then turn it into some mass killing machine. Kudos to you, Crane. We see some of our favorite characters in this as well as meet a few new ones. I personally, love the warlock even though I know he is a bad guy. He is just a likable bad guy. And of course I am loving that Arch's wife is in the action, so to speak. There is so much more to her and I love that she is being incorporated into the story a little more each time. I really think that Allison Stan is one of the strongest characters in the book, the quiet brooding strong. I still enjoy the demon officers, Lerner and Duncan, and think it really opens up the whole gray area that Crane is so good with writing. Yes, they are demons but are they inherently evil?
There is some major plot twists throughout Corrupted that will have you gasping in surprise and laughing out loud too. There is one specific scene that really had me thinking of the Ghostbusters movie. Think of the whole "keymaster, gatekeeper" idea and you will understand. I loved that scene so much! Even though it was pretty creepy; it was still pretty awesome!
Overall, Corrupted was a really fun and really intense read. There was this major darkness (even more so than normal) saturating the whole story line that kept the story from being too crazy and silly; but instead made you deal with some very shocking and intense themes that people today sometimes face. I feel like each book is leading up to this whopper of a story thread that is going to bring the reader down to our knees. Each of these books gets harder as there is more things for these people to lose.
Oh dear. Things are definitely going to hell in a handbag in Midian, Tennessee. But what a story it makes!
Throughout this series there is, for me, an underlying note of tension which is being ratcheted up a notch or two with each book released. It's like being on a slippery slope with a fiery pit at the bottom, only someone keeps making the slope steeper and steeper.
I adore this series. Yes, it's graphic; yes the language is foul and yes, there are the moments when I read and then just go "EW - gross!" But, for me, that is what makes this book a great read. Despite the fact that I was reading about demons and the impending apocalypse, I was still involved in the story and the characters.
Robert succeeds in describing a bit of hell on earth....I could almost smell the brimstone.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
If ever a warning for MATURE READERS was ignored - this is definitely NOT the time! Corrupted will leave you sick to the pit of your stomach, yet unable to put it down. The newest evil to reach Midian, Tennessee will make you wonder if anyone will ever be safe again, but then... Read it if you dare and see how the lives of those who live in this god-forsaken town get to grips with the newest layer of hell.
