First, I offer an apology for what may appear to be a complete and utter mess of a review. I'm way behind on both reading and writing my reviews. Real life doesn't care though - I do.
A four-book series introducing and focusing on Jasper White, lead singer in a rock band, and Ava Thompson, chef extraordinaire, who become involved in a frenzied and passionate relationship. My feelings are all over the place on this series. I read the four books back-to-back and will write one review to cover their complete story. To say it was an exhausting experience is the very least in describing my overall mind-set. Two solid novels could probably have done a fine job in getting this story told. So be prepared for unrestrained ranting, along with positive acknowledgements as well.
Within the pages of these four books, there is angst aplenty, what I would classify as flirting close to cheating, and walking the line towards relationship triangles. I swear I’ve never read a book or a series of books that was filled to the brim with more of every kind imaginable drama-trauma- heartache-heartbreak. But if you can imagine it, it’s probably on the bill of fare here. The dialogue sometimes comes across a bit cheese-filled and overly repetitious. Eye-rolling was presented a number of opportunities.
Every conceivable bad thing that could happen does in the lives of Ava and Jasper! And more times than not, they bring it upon themselves. They don’t talk – they just act without thought! The occurrences keep replaying time after time and those incidences begin to challenge the believability scale. Yet I could not bring myself to stop reading. These two are on a never-ending train wreck with no light at the end of the tunnel with me held captive. How did I become so addicted to this mess? It’s complicated.
I SURRENDER (Book 1 of 4)
After a horrible breakup with her boyfriend in Singapore, we meet Ava on an airplane flying back to the United States seeking comfort from friends and family. It isn’t long before she meets the drop dead gorgeous lead singer in a friend’s band. Jasper will definitely make a long-lasting impression. They become flirty friends until that quickly becomes so much more. But they both have torments and pain wrapped around their necks squeezing the life out of their new relationship. So begins their tortured and unstable relationship. And before you know it, Ava has accepted a culinary scholarship back in – wait for it – Singapore! Things are left questionable between her and Jasper. Oh! Yes, the ex-boyfriend-jackass, Harper, is still in Singapore and he has his sights set on Ava once again. After several months of trying to make things work long distance, the waters are muddy and filled with lies and secrets culminating in a major confrontation between Ava and Jasper. And we end this book with a cliffhanger – one that begs the answer to whether or not Ava and Jasper will be able to hang onto their strained relationship or whether it’s over and finished.
SURRENDER TO ME (Book 2 of 4)
After six months, we’re back with Ava on an airplane returning to LA to be her best friend’s maid of honor as Veronica and Lucas say their “I Dos”. At least one couple can make a decision, stick to it, and move forward. It certainly isn’t Ava, who has a lot of 'splaining to do when it comes to her travel mate sitting in the seat beside her on this flight. Here she plays both cards – secretively of course. Poor Jasper is not only upset with her but dealing with his own personal demons as well. Ava is one big f$cked up mess of a girl. She’s beginning to grate on my nerves and walking a fine line of over the line with me. Her indecisiveness drives me bonkers. And I’m not falling for all her sniveling and whiny excuses. You won’t believe the roller-coaster ride this book will take you on. And once again, prepare yourself for an unexpected cliffhanger!
SURRENDERED (Book 3 of 4)
The soap opera that is Jasper and Ava’s story continues five weeks after the ending of the second installment. With chapter titles like The Last Supper or Death, Babies and Lies – or chapters that end with some version of In hindsight, I wish that I knew how wrong I was – you know things aren’t getting any better before another round of disaster strikes. It is most definitely time for a little sunshine to send its rays of light onto this downpour! These two have racked up a ton of destruction – it’s like an EF-5 tornado has leveled everything in its path leaving nothing but miles of destruction. However, the delightful secondary case of best friends keeps this one going with some lighter notes and LOL moments.
WHITE (Book 4 of 4)
Four books in and the roller coaster ride of ups and downs and twists and turns never ceases, and I am yet to feel completely certain of the solidarity between Jasper and Ava. They were still going strong with the angst and same secretive and destructive behavior patterns that plagued their relationship from the very first. Please can we finally just land in the same place long enough for them to bare their souls and get the entire mish- mash of doubts and secrets out in the open to finally reach that illusive HEA?
A year after the ending of Book #3, Ava finds herself being serenaded by Jasper in a bar in New York City. Yes, finally they are in the same city - same country in each other’s arms – but don’t get too excited because it’s only temporary. If you’ve stuck with this series, you know things don’t always go as planned for Jasper and his lady love. So hang on tight and get ready for the next wave of drama. Because nothing is ever easy and there are suddenly new additions to the story that are going to wreak havoc both in the kitchen and on the stage making things once again uneasy between our protagonists.
With Jasper’s music career on the West Coast in LA and concerts world-wide and Ava as chef in an upscale and very popular restaurant on the East Coast in New York, things are a little strained (not like that’s anything new though) and something has to give (or should I say “someone” has to give) in order to keep this relationship on its path to happily ever after. And with new characters who aren't the good kind of characters, there isn't much hope that the sailing will be smooth.
At Chapter 21, I swear I wanted to bash Ava’s head in. She is a complete imbecile and never gives any thought to considering the possibilities before jumping. Girl – get a brain! She is the dumbest dimwit ever! I am sick of her!! For the most part, I think Ava is the one most responsible for the ruination on the whole for me. She is so selfish and self-centered most of the time. My advice to Jasper was to run for the hills as fast as his long legs would take him. Both of them could have saved themselves a lot of trouble and heartache if they had just talked openly and honestly. And for heaven’s sake, half of the angst and drama could have been left out and there still would have remained more than enough for an angst-filled tsunami. But just as I’m thinking that, here come more waves of doom.
This time it is Jasper who bears the brunt of the pain and Ava must step up to the challenge if there is any hope for happiness. It’s sad and I had some tearful moments. I loved the characters, both main and secondary, and the premise surrounding this whole fiasco of a love story. But I’ll admit that even with all the too-too-much of everything I still would do it all again. The ending made it so worth it all. This author loves to put her readers through the grinder and she does it so well. And she leaves us with a sweet and touching Epilogue to seal the deal.
If you can survive the overdose of juvenile behavior, put up with the repetition, and enjoy pages and pages of angst, then this one might be worth your consideration. There is, after all, a rocker and a chef so you won’t be without entertainment and nourishment. But you might need a shrink and a strong drink after it’s all said and done.
