A sweeping historical novel on the last decade of Ottoman rule in Palestine centered around six Jamail, a Sunni Arab businessman educated at the American Univeristy in Beirut; Natalia, a Russian Jewess sold into prostitution as a child, whom Jamail meets in the best brothel in Constantinople and convinces to join him in Jerusalem;; David Grun, a Polish socialist who flees to Palestine to escape the Czarist police; Jospeh, a Sephardic entrepreneur who builds the first railroad in Palestine; Thomas, a young English archaeology student who would later lead Arab armies;and Wassif, A Christian Arab musician who kept a journal on life in Jerusalem from the beginning of the century until his expulsion. These characters meet and interact in the turmoil of the era, and their stories mirror what the region would become.
