Kate Sinclair is a waitress working in the small tourist town of Bear Mountain. She’s wanted Gage since their first meeting, but he’s never made a move even though she suspects he wants her too, despite her plus-sized curves. When she finds out his secret, she resolves to risk everything and ask him out.
Gage Adams, a grizzly bear shifter, has lived on his own for several years. The moment he saw Kate for the first time, he knew she was destined to be his mate. The problem? How to control his lust enough to earn her trust and tell her about his bear.
When Kate is put in danger, nothing will stop the bear from claiming and protecting his mate.
I fast paced read, filled with passion and some danger.
Gage Adams is a handsome loner who leaves in the town of Bear Mountain. A town that has belonged to his ancestors for centuries. He helps around the town, but keeps to himself. Oh, by the way, he also happens to be a bear shifter who has found his mate around a year ago, but has not worked up the courage to ask her out yet.
Kate Sinclair after being betrayed by her boyfriend on a camping trip several months ago, has made Bear Mountain her new residence. She loves this town and works as a waitress in the local diner. She is tall and curvier than average women. She thinks Gage is just out of her league. She knows a secret though.
These two are great characters and this is a sexy read along with some danger lurking. I wish it had been longer. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
Short novella about a shifter bear meeting his mate.
The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between -Kindle Unlimited book -very quick read (only 60 pgs) -Writing’s not bad, but not compelling either -but there’s sex, so..there’s that -I like the idea of this bear shifter ‘verse, but it’s pretty generic -villain was one dimensional
The Bottom Line I don’t know what I’m in the mood to read, so this worked as filler TBH. I don’t know if I would have if I didn’t have the KU subscription, but I’ll probably read the rest, if only because they’re such short novellas.
Where can I find Bear shifter for my own? He has to be like Gage! Katie is a strong and smart heroine. This story is well written with great characters. I think you will like them. I know you will like the book.
I love shapeshifter romances and bears are only second to wolves in my world. I liked this short romantic tale, the characters, and the town. I've already downloaded book 2.
1+ It's not bad, but for me, the fast pace and underdeveloped details combined with a really weak and annoying h just left me cold.
Gage (H) and Kate (h) have been circling about each other for the past two years, since she arrived in the small town of Bear Mountain. He's holding back, unsure of how to bring up the fact that he's an immortal grizzly shifter. She's holding back, wrapped up in a serious case of body image insecurity. What could finally push them over the edge to admitting they belong together?
What killed this for me was Kate. She just was weak and hypersensitive and insecure to a ridiculous degree. Example: her clothes are ruined and he offers her his tshirt. She refuses because "it won't fit." The man is 6'5" with "tree trunk thighs". So, he's 7 inches taller than her, plus a very muscular build. She even says "she felt small next to him." How big does she see herself, though, that she thinks his tshirt won't fit?? And that was just one example of many instances of how insecure she was about her size. But we don't get much detail about why she should feel so insecure. Gage is making moves, and the sheriff is interested (albeit in a highly creepy way). So, two guys are each very interested in her, but she's still convinced she's completely unattractive? To the point that she jumps the gun when Gage tries to talk to her, not even letting him try to explain what she means to him. Rereading their conversation, I never saw what she was saying, about how it was such an obvious break-up conversation.
And with a short story like this, we just don't get the development to make this make sense. To make it not an irritating personality trait and a turn-off for the character. No background with bullying or other instances where her size was a hang-up (yes, her ex had cheated, but we have no sense of what her friend was like or why he cheated - she could have been even bigger than Kate, for all we know!). And there's no spunk or sass or confidence in another area of her life to balance it out. My biggest impression of Kate's personality was "stereotypical BBW with crippling body image hang-ups."
There was a lot that was rushed, actually, not just Kate's character. Plenty of plot details that went from 0 to 60 in a heartbeat. Like why did the sheriff suddenly flip and attack her? Or how she saw Gage shift but just rolled with it, no big reaction, even though shifters aren't really common knowledge in this world? Just a lot that moved too fast and with too little groundwork or detail to flow easily. Even for a short story.
A number of spelling errors and similar word errors (striping/stripping - that sort of thing). Not a story that desperately needs an editor, but it could have used another proofread or two.
Alternating 3rd person POV. No cheating or love triangles or OW drama. OM drama as major plot line. Really weak and insecure h. Nothing too unique in the world of shifter romances, but that's not necessarily a bad thing either - even formulaic ones can be fun with good characters. As a short story, it's a fast read, easy escapism with fairly low drama, but it also means there's a lot of plot and character details that are rushed or glossed over. HEA with epilogue leading into the rest of the series (not really a cliffhanger, just a lead in).
Would I read more in the series? Actually, I would. I've read other books by this author, and they're not bad, as light shifter escapism short stories go. I think the weak h in this one was too much for the light plot and nonexistent character development. With another h - maybe one with a little more backbone - these light stories make for easy escapes. Kate just wasn't that h.
"Lone Bear" Bear Mountain book One by Ruby Shae...
This novella is a super, quick, sexy read of about sixty pages. "Lone Bear" is the first in a series of five novellas. This novella is the story of curvy waitress Kate Sinclair and the sexy giant of a man/grizzly bear shifter, Gage Adams.
Gage was so sweet and patient when trying to win over Kate's heart. But he was cautious as well, worrying how Kate would react to his "bear." Gage was strong, protective and instinctual as well as possessive, romantic, sweet and sexy when it came to Kate. Yup...he was perfect!
Kate was a lonely woman, insecure about her body. After camping with so called "friends," she finds herself abandoned in the town of Bear Mountain in Montana. Kate loves the town and proceeds to make it her home. Kate also has a crush on the loner of a giant, Gage Adams and is oblivious to his feelings towards her.
When Kate finds herself in danger, Gage does everything in his power, (which is a hell of a lot), to protect and assure she will always be safe. With him... There are no limits to what he will do to make that happen. Nope...none...
I enjoyed this story for what it was, a super short sexy story with likable characters.
I really like this book, and I enjoyed very much. Paranormal romance is my favorite genre to read. It used to be vampires were my favorite to read in that genre, but shifters are about to over take that. Lol
Anyway, I liked Gage and Kate, and their coming together. Although, it's not that long, there was some good back story on both. I also liked how there's been an attraction between the two for a while, but neither one acted on it. But when they did come together, sizzle sizzle. :-)
There was also a side story going on with Kate that I liked. I didn't like what was happening, but I liked that there was more going than just Gage and her coming together.
So, I really did enjoy this, and I can't wait to read the rest in the Bear Mountain series, along with other books that Ruby Shae has.
Anyone who enjoys shifter romances will dig their teeth into this one and be begging for more. I know I will be reading the next in the series as soon as I'm done writing this review! The main characters are well flawed and thought out. The plot moves fast in a way that feels like real life would. It's a fast, hot and interesting read.
HEA - Part of Kindle Unlimited - standalone book but part of a series. Have grown to love bear shifter books!! This one ends with an opening at the end for next characters to have a book. He has wanted her for 2 years. She pines for him while she waits his table each week...will they finally take the plunge?
I loved this bookbinding was glad there was no cliffhangers and I loved the character's Katie and Gage they were perfect..I cant wait to read the other books in the series..this was the first book I read written by Ruby Shae and I will be on then look out for more...
I enjoyed reading this bear shifter novella set in a small rural town. I finished it in one sitting and quickly got the next novella in the series. The easy acceptance of the fact Gage was a bear shifter was hard to believe but the rest of the story worked quite well. The characters were well developed and romance hot.
This series was suggested to me because I had enjoyed an author similar to this one and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It did seem a bit short though so I'm ready to get started on book number two lol.
I liked this book. it has a nice storyline and of course a love story. I like reading all kinds of genres. and like finding new authors to read also. definitely recommending
Terrific story with lots drama, interactions, sex, and humour are to be found in this new series by the author. I am reading all the books of Bear Mountain series with pleasure. S. Otto
This is a short story with enough romance (ehh sex, lol) and conflict to hold my interest. There was also an interesting little twist. I'm surprised that the author managed to get so much into such a short story. It was very good and I will be reading the next book in the series.
Excellent entry book into what sounds like a great series. The characters are well rounded and the author gives a depth of story and wonderful lead in to the next book.
I am new to this author but I liked this story, about people in a small town...I am going to read the rest of the series and hopefully then I can give a better rating.
I ran across this book by chance and I truly enjoyed it!! Can't wait to read the next one! This is a standalone but I believe the next book is about the brother.
3.5/5 stars Gage is a bear shifter that is immortal, that’s a new one for me, he also can retain his clothes when he shifts. Kate is a waitress at the local diner. She came through town two years ago on a hiking trip with her boyfriend and friends. She found her boyfriend sleeping with her best friend, she left them on the trail and decided to stay in town. The two are interested in one another but neither has made a move. Meanwhile the jerky sheriff has been harassing her to date him. When Kate gets the courage up to ask Gage for a date he looks her up and down and snaps at her, she thinks he’s not interested and finds her too curvy for him. He later comes by and asks her for a date. Before the date can happen the sheriff tries to race her. She saves herself and runs to Gage for help. (She knows he is a bear shifter.) She was very insecure which caused a lot of problems for them. She also has a tstl moment that Gage has to save her from. He is not a great communicator which leads to misunderstandings. Thankfully his bear takes care of the sheriff when he kidnaps Kate. He accepts the town’s nomination for him to become sheriff. One month later Kate is pregnant, she again has doubts about Gage and about herself, he soothes her and lets her know he felt her pregnancy from the beginning and other immortal bear shifters will come to town because she is pregnant. Epilogue with his brother who he is estranged with coming home. Did not like that he slept with other women before, no fated mate scenario. Like the deputy and look forward to his story. And the brothers.

a short fast paced read, easy escapism with fairly low drama, filled with passion and some danger. However due to the pace you don’t get…attached to the characters and neither they or the atmosphere have chance to develop. Characters are nice enough if a bit one dimensional. All that being said it was a nice light little read, that didn’t take too much brain power to keep track of everything.
I found this one quite difficult to rate yes, I enjoyed it and although it had potential to be an amazing book if given time. attachments to characters would have developed and the atmosphere of drama, danger and even love and romance would’ve had chance to percolate and develop. I found it a little too light to leave an impression.
