For most of her life, eighteen-year-old Lana thought she was ordinary. But when fractured childhood memories resurface, she remembers the Lana is a Chapel, heir to one of the most powerful and feared magical families in existence.

In a world where magical families rule from the shadows, the Velascos, the Chapel family's oldest rivals, have warred with them for generations. But when a new, bloodthirsty magical family threatens to wipe them both out, the Chapels and Velascos are forced into a desperate alliance. And Lana must bind her magic with Gage Velasco, her sworn enemy.

The binding was supposed to be an Enmity spell, designed to unite their hatred into strength. Instead, it becomes an Eros binding - one rooted in love. Worse still, binding is one of the Seven Deadly Spells, and the only way it can be broken is for one of them to die.

But as the lines blur between duty and desire, Lana must protect her legacy or follow her heart into ruin.

3.5 stars!

Nat won this arc for me last year at YALC as it's a book I'm really excited for, and although it's not rated 5, I still really enjoyed it! I stand by that rating a book 3 is *not* a bad rating (at least, for me it's not). This book has similar vibes to The Mortal Instruments, but a lot darker. It's technically a romantasy but I thought it was a cool urban fantasy with romance within the plot. At times the dialogue and relationship between the two main characters felt a bit rushed and cringe, but that could just be me. Overall, I loved this magic, loved the concept and world building, this was a really fun, dark and gripping read. I flew through it and I can't wait for the rest of the series! Out November!

I received an early copy from the publisher. All thoughts are my own.

I really should have listened to my desire to DNF early on. Whilst this was a fast paced ‘action packed’ read. It was very cringey and I found my eyes rolling on more than one occasion. Even allowing for the fact this was a YA book, both the main characters came across so immature, their feelings for each other were forced and unnatural. The whole book focuses around their desire to take each other’s clothes off and completely took away from what could have been a cool world built around opposing mafia style families and old fae magic?

I’m not even sure what the magic system really was as it was never fully explained. So much of the focus of this was on a cheesey, horny teenage romance that I struggle to accept this is a fantasy book. Some spells here and there just didn’t make up for the lack of actual world building and the most basic plot.

This was a bit of a mess honestly, 2 stars is me being generous.

Review of advance copy received from Publisher

I really wanted to rate this higher as LA Weatherly's Angel trilogy was such a defining series for me as a teenager, but whilst I did enjoy this book I wasn't completely gripped the whole way through. I did love both Lana and Gage individually, but together they felt a little forced for my taste. I thought the magic/mafia style family plot line was very interesting and Vanessa to be a fairly scary matriarch of the Chapel family. I'll definitely be reading the sequel and hopefully will resonate with the MCs as a couple more in the second book

Thank you to NetGalley for this arc

I felt the book was fast-paced , easy to read, and the concept was interesting. However this book didn’t give me a wow factor that I had thought it could give me which was a bit disappointing.
