Join National Geographic expert and TV personality Brady Barr on some wild adventures with snakes! Readers won't believe their eyes as they read Barr's hilarious—and completely true!—accounts of his interactions with some of the biggest, weirdest, and craziest snakes on Earth. Filled with engaging photos, fast facts, and fascinating sidebars, readers won't want to put this book down.
My 6-year-old daughter read this book on her own. (Fun fact 1: She bought this book directly from the author, Dr. Brady Barr, the well-known National Geographic explorer, herpetologist, and educator. She met him during a presentation he gave at a local library. She also met an American alligator and a reticulated python he had brought along. [Fun fact 2: I had typed 'alligator and python', but she insisted I 'be specific' and add 'American' and 'reticulated', so as not to confuse people.] Since she was 2, she has said consistently that she wants to be a zoologist, among other things.)
Here is her rating and review in her own words (typed by Daddy as she reviewed):
"I think Scrapes with Snakes is super-cool. There is a cave in Indonesia, and people say that hundreds of snakes live in it. They call it 'the Snake Cave.' Also in this book, in India people think a python is eating their cows, and Dr. Barr goes searching for the snake. He finds a giant one and brings it back to the town, but people say, 'No, that's not the giant snake' and he's like, 'Phew, I did not want to meet that giant snake. If it could swallow cows, it could swallow me whole.'"
[Note: These facts and paraphrasing are exactly as told by my daughter as she was recalling them, so bear that in mind.]
Brady Barr shares some of his exciting adventures with snakes in this chapter book reader for kids. From a large Indian Rock Python in India, to a reticulated python in Indonesia and a green anaconda in South America, Brady takes the reader for quite the ride as he travels with researchers to capture these snakes. True snake lovers are bound to devour this book and the details Barr provides about the dangers associated with studying big snakes and why it's necessary. The first story about a snake large enough to swallow a cow was somewhat intimidating and I would not recommend this book for those who are afraid of snakes. But for those who enjoy armchair adventure stories about animals in the wild I can recommend this book highly.
This one was about snakes! I, like a lot of other people, am not to fond of snakes. They look scary. But I am not as afraid of snakes as I used to be. Which is good. Maybe someday I will like snakes. So I read this and I thought to myself. The guy in this book really isn't scared of a 21 foot long snake! I don't understand but whatever. I liked the pictures and facts and am going to see if I can find more.
Both our kids loved listening to this extreme adventures involving finding, catching, photographing snakes from national geographic kids while they're on a big snake kick. Definitely have to give a big caveat that this can only be done by trained professionals. Also talks a bit about the impact of invasive species.
I personally am really interested in snakes and this book was really interesting an dufn to read. It was like watching a documentary but in a book form.
