”But when I wake up, there is always the Sun.
At Papa's home
and at Mama's home.”

- Roopal Kewalya, Three is not Equal to One

A young boy learns to co-exist independently with his father and mother who have been divorced. The lad is unnamed making his experience universal. The pictorial depiction of the young one's expression, his emotions are beautifully depicted with interplay of colours, form and texture. Swati Chandak Sharma has splattered vibrant colours in water colour medium that feel authentic.

’Three is not equal to one’ is a poignant exploration of identity and how severed family ties are not a representation of broken homes. Kewalya's tone is sensitive while portraying how alone doesn't always mean lonely. She illustrates it through lines in a poetic format that is easy to read, yet has enormous gravity.

The boy spending quiet time watching the rising sun indicates that every cloud has a silver lining and heralds a fresh start. There's always a rainbow at the end of a rainfall. Kewalya draws on the fact that families living together doesn't imply that they are happy. Instead of suffocating in a broken home, the lad has two happy homes.

”Where together is not always happy.
Alone is not always sad.”

Three is not equal to one. - Roopal Kewaliya

“Where together is not always happy.Alone is not always sad.”

An unnamed boy who has been learning to live independently since his parents are divorced. It’s not all easy for the kid to get the transition, but he’s seeing the world in a happy tone. It’s emotional and deep to understand his feelings.

The illustration is so beautiful that it adds more depth to the poem. The author beautifully explores the concept of identity and broken relationships. What I loved is how the kiddo sees the world in a positive tone. It’s not easy to accept, but he understood.

The rhyming in the poems was so poignant. If you ask me whether I would recommend it or not. Can’t say because some books carry the emotional weight when they are beautiful.
