Thaddeus Patrick Lourie saw her, wanted her, and declared that he would have her. No person, thing, or beast would stop him from having his rightful mate. As the next in line for the top, there were expectations set. What happens when the set expectations go against his destiny of having her? Will he stick to the expectations or show his teeth and move toward his destiny?
Elsbeth Darya Sanders minded her business and appreciated when her business minded her. What happens when her business collides with wolf business? When a wolf sets his eyes on her, will she stand still for the catching or run for the chase?
Mel Dau (Melvin’s Daughter) was born in Vicenza, Italy but raised in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is the baby girl and only girl of three. Her overall desire is to use her fiction catalog to help change at least one person’s non-fiction reality.
I mean what can she not write ?!? What in the black twilight perfection ?!? I was a bit skeptical but it was a page turner ! I am from Oklahoma! And yes black native Americans do exist and it isn’t popularly known (tribes like them alot them here! Tribes like the dosar-barkus seminoles meaning black or dark native Americans)how you incorporated them having a casino and staying on a reservation and how the historical context actually follows and flows with the novel ! Well done !it’s important because they are and still fight for equal native rights here ! They were black freed slaves that coexisted and married into the Seminole tribe (my daughter partially dosar-barkus)
Some of the appeal of shifter books to me is how obsessed the shifters are with their mates. And Thaddeus was definitely immediately obsessed with Elsbeth but he was also....annoying AF.
I can't articulate it but he annoyed the shit out of me, to be fair so did Elsbeth.
I liked it enough but it proved that this author is hit or miss for me.
I love an assured and determined man and that is exactly who Thaddeus was. The love connection was shown between Thaddeus and Elsbeth. However drama and betrayal was up front and centre throughout. I cannot stand a hating *** parent and that father had issues upon issues. Him along with the other disrespectful and despicable individuals like Parker, Shakina and Enola just didn’t know when to quit. Rummie, Mikayla and Jorie had to tap and tap in they did😄. Mikayla was the best bestie and I loved that. Then there was Mama Parie who was bout it at anytime and anywhere behind her babies and I loved it too.
there is something for everyone but unfortunately this was not for me🤷🏾. I fell asleep listening to this numerous times. 🤔my conclusion is I was bored. No other explanation
This story took me through quite a few emotions. In the club scene, the girl that was so eager for the FMC to drink really rubbed me the wrong way. I had a feeling that she was a snake and I didn't have to wait long to find out if my feeling was correct. For someone to be that jealous of you that they would put you in that kind of danger is WILD!
The MMC and the FMC were cute together. Even though he was low key a bit stalker-ish, he was cute. I mean, if he's not a little clingy and wants to keep an eye on you from afar to keep you safe (on the pages...not IRL), does he really want to be your man?
I really liked Elsbeth's bestie. She was really about that life when it came to her girl. Ready throw hands and catch charges! And we find out soon enough that Thad didn't play about our girl, either. All he needed was that one hint of her scent to know he, and his pack, were not afraid to do what they had to do when it came to protecting her.
I really loved Thad's family (minus his father, of course). His sister and his mother were the absolute best. His mother warned to not play with her babies. She even gave a list so nobody could get confused on who she was talking about. They didn't listen and look what happened. Mama Marie showed that she didn't mince words or play games.
Honestly, Elsbeth's parents were great characters, too. Her dad knew who really had his baby's back. Because dad was ready to shoot first and ask questions later.
I wish Mikayla and Sebastian had gotten more page time. They were so cute in the scenes they were mentioned.
So excited to talk about this book with my book club and get everyone's takes on everything that went down in this story.
THADDEUS!!!! He was slightly unhinged but I loved it! Given the nature of who he is it was a calm unhinged lol. Elsbeth, first off her name is so unique & I love it! The things she went through…OMG I have CRIED!!!! But I’ve also been so happy to see perseverance & triumph. Moma Paire is the truth & I loved how Mikayla stepped for her girl! I loved this!!!
Elisbeth And Thaddeus pull at the earth and heart strings . MAMA was my girl she fought hard for her babies . No man was going to hurt or harm her children even if it was their nongood daddy. Please do yourself a favor and check this read out !!!!
Mel Dau a good read. I love the paranormal reads. Watching the friends take care of each other to them finding love in such an uncommon form but learning themselves in a way they never thought before was amazing.
Darker and sweeter than expected. The hero is classic Mel Dau - all in from the beginning! But the rushed pacing left me wanting more depth and less exposition.
First things first: There’s no trigger warning in this book so if you’re reading this review before the book, there’s mention of [an attempt of] r*pe throughout the book.
Now. Let me tell you something. I didn’t think I’d be all up in Thad and Els’s business like I was okay? I was pretty intrigued by them and thought the process of them getting together was cute and real af.
Like when Elsbeth and Mikayla found out Thaddeus and Sabastian were wolves. Their reactions were so real. Too many times in these romantasy/paranormal books the love interest just automatically accepts that their partner is a supernatural being. Elsbeth and Mikayla freaked out first, thought about it, and then accepted it. Real lol.
Speaking of Elsbeth and Mikayla, I looooved their friendship and how they were with the shits. Mikayla’s antics had me cracking up.
But back to Thad. I know Thaddeus is supposed to be “the man”, but he just didn’t feel like that to me. Like I admired that he went after what he wanted and protected Els by any means but idk. He just didn’t exude BDE to me. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like him though because I did. A lot of the things he did in the beginning of his relationship with Els would be red flags in real life BUT I’ll overlook them since he’s fictional lol.
Also, none of the deaths were satisfying enough for me. Don’t get me wrong. I liked the fact that the people who died, died but I needed a little something else.
Side note: did the book feel unfinished to anyone? It feels like the epilogue was rushed, barely answered my questions (like why do human partners randomly shift after giving birth), and ended in a weird spot.
Started off good enough, so my first thought was... "Cute?"
Then it gave YA vibes. Written like a regular romance, not paranormal. The guys were almost thirty, but the book read like they were college students, if not high school seniors.
Next thought was, "They came into the room with guns for crying out loud!" THEY ARE SHIFTERS?? But I digressed.
And what was with all the teeth flashing? THEY ARE WOLVES NOT VAMPIRES. I get it was supposed to be a show of force or anger but....
🤦🏾♀️ok, Thaddeus is a wolf/ chief-to-be with native Indian roots. Family lives on a reservation (think Twilight). Falls for a Beautiful Black sister, Elsbeth, in distress at a ball.
Says daddy, "this my chick."
Daddy say "hell naw, she too black and ain't one of us."
Momma jumps in and says, " You black too!"
Thadd screams, "I love my sweet black baby, I'll never let her go!"
Dad blows up his whole life with his racist hatred.
Elsbeth is oblivious to everything!
Meanwhile, these shifters openly slaughter "cause they don't give a F" 🤦🏾♀️, so forget discretion. Cheat, mate bonds are non-existent. They mate and marry whoever, which explains a lot! I think someone's parents died. Aren't shifters long-lived?
Don't get me started as to why we're having a three part budget friendly mating ceremony or wouldn't pay $600 at the VIP if they were doing so well?
As soon as Thaddeus saw Elsbeth, he knew that she was the one for him despite their differences. After saving her from a dangerous situation rooted in revenge, he was even more was determined to be with her. His determination and his alpha ways were things that I loved about Thaddeus because he wasn't going to let outside forces keep him from his mate. Elsbeth indecisiveness when she first finds out the truth about Thaddeus got on my nerves at times, but I was still rooting for them to be together. Mikayla was the just the kind of best friend that Elsbeth needed. I loved the addition of Farad and Sabastian. Not only did they have Thaddeus' back in all things, but they ended up finding love as well. I couldn't stand Enola, Shakina, Patrick and Parker. I was glad when Patrick, Shakina, Parker and their crew got what they deserved. Mama Parie didn't play about her children, and Patrick, Thaddeus' father, found that out in the end. This book had me intrigued from the beginning. Even though it was a paranormal story, it touched on some heavy issues. Self-hatred, colorism, revenge, and jealousy were just some of the things that were touched on. This was a very good book that you won't be able to put down.
I really wanted to like this one, but it just didn’t work for me. Mel Dau’s books are hit or miss for me some are so good I can’t stop reading, and others feel like a handful of random events and characters tossed together with the hope it’ll stick. Sadly, this was the latter.
This is supposed to be a werewolf fantasy romance, but there’s zero world-building. In fantasy, I need backstory, lore, and a sense of place. Here, we have mixed-breed characters Black and White Indigenous people living on a reservation who can shift into wolves… and sometimes into centaur-type shifters. It was a lot, and none of it was explained in a way that made sense.
The pacing felt rushed. One moment the leads are meeting with a bit of tension, and the next they’re in bed together no build up, no transition, just… boom. I found myself flipping back to see if I’d missed something. I hadn’t. Even the epilogue felt off it didn’t read like a wrap up, and the perspective shift made it more jarring.
I stuck with it, hoping it would get better, but it never did. The only reason I’m giving it two stars instead of one is because of one (maybe two) decent spicy scenes. Mediocre at best, but they kept it from being a total loss.
3.5…I love a good paranormal shifter book especially during Halloween season. It was a good quick read but I felt like I missed out on certain moments. Like a reader said in one of the comments the time jumps took away from the book. Like what was Thad and her parents talking about while she was getting ready to join them for their Sunday dinner where she was introducing him to her family? What was their experience like the first time they connected sexually? What was the tribe life like? To be a wolf shifter book there was barely any shifting or any pack business. I can literally count on one hand how many times they shifted. Like what was Thad like when he was around his pack and hunting? What was it like when they first mated? Normally I don’t really care for the villain POV but I felt like I missed out on Enola and Patrick’s scheming. This book really wasn’t giving shifter vibes. It was like an urban romance with a lil paranormal sprinkle added to it. Any, who with all that I still enjoyed the book and will continue to read more from Mel’s catalog. I’ve read a ton of her books as it is.
If “it be your own people was a book” this would be the book.
I love the insta love and the protectiveness shown by everyone but almost thought Elsbeth was a goner a few times that had me almost shedding a tear of what could have gone down. Her life was not safe but Mi, Thad, mama Parie, Rummie and Harry do not play about Els. Harry, her daddy and BFF Mi had me Ctfu. Harry was ready to unalive a ninja big daddy style and rightfully so and her BFF Mi was down for whatever, whenever and didn’t give 1 f*ck about asking questions.
A few plot twists to shake sheit up with some shocking revelations keep the pages turning. This story brought the drama and suspense with a side of disloyalty, jealousy and hatred causing people to f*ck around and find out that anybody can get those fangs and family is not absolved, these wolves do not play about their mates…period! Try one!
Enjoyed this story, it was a good mix of excitement, funny and romance.
I would love to read Rummies story because she’s so covert with her sneaky link, you just want to know what’s up…
2.5 stars…it started off strong, I was intrigued, and then explanations started explaining and I just didn’t like it in the end. Typically books that have a rape subplot for no reason I don’t like this one really didn’t make all that much sense anyway and why these people were allowed to live until damn near the end of the book was crazy to me. Patrick was overly, or rather comically villainous in my opinion. Also how you bout that shit but this man call your girl a beastless bitch (which is a cringy term but I digress) like three times and he was still alive to keep doing it…wild. I did like that the MMC was like fuck it I’ll have a regular job…that his ass was never at so it was kinda pointless . I think more info on the lore would have made it better for me like what goes in the mating why was everyone obsessed with purity, what did homegirl mean when she was like she didn’t get her woman till she had a baby. Yes those women told Elsbeth they had a lot to teach her but what’s the point of mentioning it to the reader if we aren’t gonna know
Don't listen to the Audio..... Just read on your OWN!!!
I just finished When the Wolf Cries, and I have to be honest—this is the very first book I’ve ever rated one star, and it’s not because of the story itself. The storyline was actually solid and had a lot of potential.
But the narration… absolutely ruined the entire experience.
I listened to this book during a road trip, and the female narrator made me feel like I was sitting in a second-grade classroom. Her voice had that sing-song, overly childish tone, and she paused between every single word in a way that drove me up the wall. By hour two, I literally wanted to throw my phone out the window.
This is now the third book I’ve listened to with her narration, and this was the moment I finally realized: I will never, ever, ever, ever listen to another audiobook narrated by her. No matter how good the story is, her delivery completely takes me out of it and makes it impossible to enjoy.
Great book concept… completely ruined by the narrator.
Another hit and a new set of characters! Mel Dau is always and will always be an instant click for me. Although she only produces gold… her paranormal books hit differently. I love to interact with the characters that are everyday people who just happen to shift into animals 🤷🏾♀️ Thad and Elsbeth were a vibe from the beginning. I knew I would love Elsbeth after she read her nemesis for filth!🙌🏾 Thad instantly gave BDE so he had me at go. To then get to experience Farad and Sebastian😩 my girly parts weren't ready! This storyline was straightforward but with a little of everything; deceit, betrayal, jealousy, loyalty, drama, acceptance, and love. I see this book being a great start to a new series and I hope we get to dive into this pack more now that one battle has been won. Mel Dau will go where the characters lead her and right now I'm wanting them to lead her to Rummie and her “man” because my girl is keeping secrets and I need to know why!
The MCs never really got a break! From the beginning of this story up until the end the FMC was out through it! The story moved fast which I can appreciate but it truly felt like every chapter there was some drama and we never got to see a relationship build between Elsbeth and Thad. She was always getting assaulted by someone. I wanted to like this one. I think this is the first paranormal book by this author and it wasn’t bad at all just wish there was a bit more peace for the MCs. Thad’s dad was a POS and I’m not sorry about what happened with him but I feel like the last bit about Chepi being revealed close to the end was an after thought and kinda didn’t make sense. For all of the self hatred Patrick had, it doesn’t make sense that he would lay up with a woman like Chepi for as long as he did. Not a bad story, probably needed to be a bit longer so that the romance feels a bit more organic but if you’ve read Mel Dau then you already knows she gets in and gets out!
I loved this story! Thaddeus, Sebastian, Farad, and Oscar didn't play about their mates. Just like Mama Parie didn't play about her children. No man or wolf was going to come for them or theirs even if that included Thaddeus's father, Patrick. This pack fought to the death for their loved ones regardless of who they were.
I love a deep, emotional, and dramatic paranormal story. And this book went waaaay beyond my expectations. Mel Dau's books be having me pausing my current book just so I can dive into hers. Her storytelling has a way of grabbing the readers' attention and keeping you invested until the book is finished. And I loved that. This book, without a doubt, is a must-read. I can't wait for the next book .
I love reading these types of books. Thaddeus was not playing when he laid eyes on Elsbeth. He decided right then that she would be his mate, and he began to protect her as such. Parker and Skakina didn't believe him the first time that he explained what would happen if they tried hurting Elsbeth again. Thad not only had to show them, but he had to become allies with his father about the woman that he loved. Nobody was allowed to disrespect her. She wanted to stray after finding out his truth, but she loved him too much. Their fate was sealed along with their friends. Nobody would harm any of them. Awesome read!
...just poorly written. I'm in shock. I've never read such a poorly written story by Mel Dau. This is the first paranormal book I've read from her. Maybe the genre switch threw Ms. Dau off.
I enjoyed the plot.I just couldn't get over the bad writing. I found myself skimming through to try to avoid the missteps. In addition to poor grammar and misused vocabulary, there were plot holes and missing character motivations. Then, the epilogue switched from first person narration to third person.
If this is your first encounter with Mel Dau, just know this is not representative of her usual work.
When a Wolf Cries is definitely one of the books that has you hoping the author takes some folks out!!! Thad knew from the moment he saw Elsbeth she was his, and he saved her life because of that moment. Too many people really tried to keep these two apart for the own selfish beliefs and feelings. I absolutely enjoyed this book and the twist and turns that had me ready to fight. Thad is steadfast in his decision to be with Elsbeth and was not allowing anyone, including his love to get in the way of that !
One thing I really like about Mel Dau is that her books will teach you something. The blend of history and paranormal/fantasy was superb. However, I felt like this particular story was rushed and not fully flushed out to the best of its ability. I like Thad and Elsbeth as characters, but felt like their interactions were not as detailed as they could’ve been. I would’ve also liked to know more about his tribe and his shifting abilities lol.
All in all, I wouldn’t mind reading more stories like this, I just need it detailed and fully flushed out.
This was a pretty good read. It had to potential to be so much better. I’ve recently gotten into paranormal so this one was not what I was expecting. I loved Mama Parie she didn’t okay about her babies, period. I loved how after the initial shock MiKayla didn’t care that her man was wild she wanted her man regardless. Thaddeus was bae fr I loved ho he lived on Elsbeth. With a name like Elsbeth I just knew she was gone be a beast or witch or something. Overall a good read and my first read from this author. I will be checking for more work from this author as well.
This is the third book I’ve read in this series. I recommend all of the books. When a wolf cries takes place with a different tribe though. Thad and Els seemed to be meant to be. They had so many challenges but the drama was so good story wise. I would have loved to see more of their relationship with just the two of them. Similar to Sven and Willow in Willows Peak. I’d wanted more of the relationship dynamic. Anyway great story and hopefully we will see Rummie and her “business “ next. Lol
