Add some flare to your counting lessons with Cool Cats Counting. Donkeys lined up to dance the merengue? Rats in bolero hats? Pigs salsa dancing? And how cool are those cats anyway? Sherry Shahan and Paula Barragán, the collaborators behind the highly acclaimed Spicy Hot Colors , team up in a burst of color and rhythm to introduce young readers to animals and numbers in English and Spanish. Readers can learn a new language while also learning their numbers, all while being thoroughly engaged thanks to Barragán's beautiful illustrations. With bold colors and simplistic lines, each number presents a crazy and fun new animal. Shahan's poetic riffs suggest a variety of rhythms and dances, and Barragán's multimedia illustrations outfit the animals in vibrant costumes any diva would envy! This rhythmic, Spanish folktale from Latin America is sure to make readers boogie while also learning how to count with numbers.
Sherry Shahan is a photographer and an author. She enjoys watching, photographing, and writing about the otters that play in the sea near her home in California. Sherry also wrote and photographed The Changing Caterpillar for Richard C. Owen Publishers.

It amazes me how much my nephew enjoys learning another language! This is the second book by Sherry Shahan and I found it after he enjoyed her other book. One reader said she didn't like it but I decided to let him decide and he loved it even better than the first! There is something about animals dressed up in the wild Mexican colors that just works and paired with her little ditties it was just the right mix. He wanted to learn all the Spanish and easily found a page to draw!
I have to say I found the drawings a little creepy myself so I understand why it would give an adult pause, but my nephew found it whimsical and fun... I highly recommend this book to young readers to start picking up a little of another language!
BOTTOM LINE: An easy way to expose kids to another language young...

This is an excellent bilingual book to introduce students how to count. Since the counting stops at ten it would be a good book to read to 3 year old children. The characters do different dances and it would be a cool idea to have students imitate the dances. Students will enjoy being able to move around and learn how to count to ten in English and Spanish.
I try and try and try to like this bilingual counting book, but I just don't like the pictures very much. I used it as a participation book for a cat-themed Spanish and bilingual story time, but it wasn't my favorite. It's strange because the same author and illustrator did Spicy Hot Colors/Colores Picantes, which I do like.
