This was a fun little hot toddy with a lot of my favorite elements (of which I have many):

-Mafia
-Dubious Consent
-MMC owns FMC body/time somehow
-Forced proximity
-Possessive alpha w/gray or no morals
-Age Gap

mafia leader hires an (undercover) call girl for her burning HATRED 🩶👀 He really wants her to bring that disdain into the bedroom…actually begs her to hate him!

“When I make you come while you hate me it takes a little bit of your should, doesn’t it?”

Edie is history student turned spy/call girl to help find her lost sister. It was supposed to be a one-night undercover job but she attracts attention from the mafia leader and he loves how she hate him!! Spying turns into fond affections and before she knows it Edie is waist deep in mafia business 👀

This was something new! The dynamic was nothing like what I’ve read before and I loved it ✨ He really wanted her to hate him and at one point Edie even turned all sweet & compliant to turn him off…but he just worked harder to pissed her off again.

🩶 he loves her disdain

🩶 ‘who hurt you’ trope

🩶 he turns her academic interests into fantasies….talk about a mind fuck

I actually really enjoyed Edie’s studies and her interest in the medieval history. I guess so did Luka!! Her academic interests strangely complimented the mafia plot line. I thought the ending was dragging just a tad.

3.75 ⭐️ it’s good I just have a high standard for mafia romance

mafia mmc x call girl romance
protective mmc
he only cares for her
fmc in academia

HEA

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Kate and Quinn’s review was the final push i needed to read The Kingpin’s Call Girl.
It’s been a long time since i read anything written by Annika, and this was the perfect opportunity to find out if i still liked her work.
Having finished,i need to thank Kate and Quinn, because they were both spot on,it was most delicious!!

If you want to hear what they thought, here’s Kate’s review
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

And here’s Quinn’s
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Edie did everything she could to find her sister, and stood strong for those she cared about.
Being blackmailed by a cop to do his bidding meant she had no other choice then to get close and personal with Albanian mob boss Luka.
He had to be evil, being a mob boss, and she couldn’t help, but hate him for it.
But once she got to know him,she saw a different side to him and knew she had to protect him from Bender’s plans.
Loyal to her core, this sweet and funny history student knew Luka would be in great trouble if Bender got his way.
If only she knew where her sister was,but Bender wouldn’t say……he was too happy forcing her to give him information on Luka!
If only she could tell Luka…..but she knew what happened to traitors, and that’s all he would probably see.
Not the reason why,or the fact that she cared about him and only gave Bender things that wouldn’t hurt him.

Luka had come a long way from the small boy that was sent away by his father.
That boy died with his childhood sweetheart Sara, who lived in the girls school next to his school.
Murdered on the orders of his older brother…..but Luka and his fellow students made those responsible for their misery, and her death, pay with their lives.
He díd still have one good thing from that time though….his brother from another mother,Orton.
Other than Orton there was only one man he called close, and that was Storm.
Relationships weren’t something he did,he fucked and left.
Until that hooker….the one that looked at him with hate and scorn.
That scorn made him want to fuck her,and strangely enough,it was that scorn that made him want to keep fucking her.
And then he found out she’d given information to the cops……

Luka and Edie were perfect together!
He saw her for the strong and loyal girl she was.
And she saw him for the tough, but caring man he was.
He may have been the tough mob boss, but he was soft for her.
She may have loathed criminals, but she loved the fact that he’d kill for her.
And the fact that she would’ve been ready to kill his tormentors made him realize he was in deep….
And the heat between Edie and Luka was delicious.
The fact that he agreed they were equals, and that they should make decisions together, made me give him extra points.
The twists kept me guessing, and while i caught some in time, there were others i didn’t….

Listen. Absolutely nothing against her charming billionaires and bank robbers, but I am so excited to see Annika Martin writing in the mafia genre again. Edie is a graduate student in Medieval history, and is manipulated by a cop (she's looking for her missing sister/he's trumped up charges against her) to go undercover as a call girl in a mob bar. There she meets Luka the boss, who has taken over from his brother, and is as "merciless as the moon." They are immediately drawn towards one another, and Luka decides to hire her for two weeks. She doesn't want to blow her cover, and besides, he's "compelling me like a vampire or something" their attraction is so strong.

Martin just piles up all my favorite things like presents under the tree. Luka is a heartless killer and only operates out of self-interest, but when they are together "something in me stills, like some essential calm has settled over me." They both feel it, the "sense that we're sharing the same strange frequency. There's a feedback loop [...] It's too much...something." They both feel it, and hate that they feel it (and I eat it up with a spoon). If you think there's not panic at the connection and pushing away, and constant cravings for the other, and mutual caretaking and revealed softness, you have another think coming.

Edie, who was dressed by the cop for their first date, is trying to get him to stop wanting her, so she shows up to the next as herself, wearing "the perfect Edie dress. And he'll so hate it." So of course it's immediately "I like the dress" and you guys, THE DRESS IS THE REAL HER. "Nobody ever saw me. Until him." Martin handles the transitions from Edie judging him and hating herself for feeling so attracted to a criminal to embracing the connection so effortlessly. "Our outsides don't match, but our insides resonate."

The reader is in really good hands here. There's such lovely turns of phrase throughout, and flashes of humor, and the build of emotion and connection that a skilled writer can do so well. I already made one all caps kindle note about wanting a side character's book immediately (sadly it's not the one she says is next). There's a scene midway where the cards are all on the table, and they are fighting, but both get hurt and both immediately switch to caretaking mode that I reread a few times. In what might be the Annika Martin Core Story (Mafia Version): "'I don't deserve you.' I admit. She places her palm against my chest, over my heart. 'You don't get to decide that.'"

Its possible there were a few loose threads in the end, with some side characters acting out of character, and it never got explained why Edie was involved in the first place, but I will definitely allow it. This was a smart and sexy read that I could literally not put down until I finished it.

Thank you to the author for an arc.

4 - 4.5 stars!

Annika Martin is back with a bang with her Mafia men. It's been quite a while since I read a romance from her but I distinctly remember her Dark Mafia Prince novel so naturally I couldn't resist picking this up. Annika just knows how to write a seemingly cold and ruthless brute that melts ONLY for his girl.

And that's definitely what we get here!

"Most secretly soft-hearted villain ever," she counters.

"Only for you."

Edie is our FMC. She has an innocence about her that is endearing and a fierce loyalty that compliments her naivety. Her sister, Mary, is missing and her only way to get her sister back is to pretend to be a call girl and gather information on some very dangerous criminals. However, she finds herself in the arms of THE BOSS, Luka. And she doesn't hate it...

"He's a brute, yes. But right now, he's my brute."

Luka is all dominance and savagery in the most delicious and all consuming ways. And he wants Edie with a fierceness he has never experienced.

"You hate me, don't you? I'm an awful man who takes whatever he wants without paying. A beast who hurts the good people of the world just because he can. And now you belong to me, and I'm gonna make you come again, and I'm gonna make you crave me, and there's not a goddamned thing you can do about it."

I really enjoyed all the elements in this story. I loved that Edie's "deception" wasn't egregiously drawn out. I loved the suspense of the story and the chemistry between Edie and Luka. Edie loved everything Luka made her feel even when she tried to fight it. Luka loved to hate the soft moments that Edie gave him and their HEA was full of fun banter, vulnerable moments and heat that made me fan myself.

"You're mine," he rasps, claiming my thighs with rough hands. "Your body is mine. Your breath is mine. When you come is mine, and your begging is mine."

I mean who can't love the MINE. That is my cat nip. If you like a sexy mafia romance, this is definitely worth reading! I am looking forward to Annika writing more in this world!

4.5/5 stars

This book is everything I want in a mafia romance! The tension, banter, and fighting were perfect. I couldn't put this book down for the life of me. The trauma both characters have makes you want to root for them so hard.

Edie is a badass woman who is determined to do whatever it takes to find her sister, including getting involved with dangerous mafia men. I loved how strong Edie was; she fought for what she needed and didn't care that it meant being the kingpin's call girl when she wasn't one. Edie is one of my favorite FMCs I've read. She matched Luka's chaos with no second thoughts and found that she is worth burning the world down for.

Luka is a hot, broken man who stopped at nothing to get where he is. The moment he saw Edie, he was drawn to her in a way he'd never experienced. He can't stay away from her as he is obsessed with her hatred for him. I loved Luka so much; he truly cared for the people around him, despite never showing it. Luka realized he was starting to care about Edie, and he wanted to be the person she deserved. I loved his growth for showing his emotions to Edie and allowing her to be his safe place.

The plot of this book kept me hooked, it was so good and consuming that I need more already. I'm so excited to see what else Annika is going to bring to this world. I highly recommend this for all my mafia-loving people.

Thank you to Annika and her team for the ARC

Annika Martin The Kingpin's Call Girl

History Ain't Her Only Major 🥵

Luka Zogaj is broody, grumpy, irritable, and murderous. On the other hand, Edie "Honey" Maureen Carson is naïve but in a way that works for her most of the time. Things are a mix of comical and overheated as these two collide.

All eyes lock onto a figure gliding toward us through the dim light. He moves with predatory grace, like a dark raptor stalking its prey.
-- Edie Carson

As story went on, I love how new twists were woven in, keeping me guessing where some of it was going. It may have occasionally been outlandish, but I enjoyed every minute.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators, Benjamin Sands and Andi Eloise, do a wonderful job. I love the accents and all. 🎧❤️🎧

"You can't hide from me baby. I'm inside your house. I know everything."~Luka

I have mixed feelings on this one. Yes, it's an Albanian Ghost Hound Clan mob, meets an Arthurian-esque vibe type of book. But it got really ridiculous and so OTT that I don't know why it was written in such a way. I get the mob and code expectations but this became something else. I didn't understand the repetitive verbage. Luca has angel devil eyes. What does that even mean exactly. I guess it's supposed to mean he's hot or something? I didn't see it. And how many times can Edie's s*x clench?!!🙄 We have 23yr old Edie looking for her non-sober, I'm not sure if she was an escort, missing sister, and how Edie gets caught up with a cop ((Bender)) while looking for her. Edie was dressed as a prostitute etc etc Why? I don't know. This happened off page. And to not be arrested for solicitation, she became a CI and was told to help catch the biggest criminal in Connecticut in exchange for Mary. Luka Zogaj, 37, was the mark. And Edie didn't think about asking questions, finding out the strangeness of an offer from this cop. Nothing. Not once. That alone was the biggest red flag. How would Bender know about Mary? Why does he know about her and not let Edie see her? Come on.🤦🏼‍♀️ He's supposed to be a cop.🚔🚨🚨 Cherry lights.😆😆 What universe am I in?

🚩🚩Also, be sure to check out the TWs. There might be situations that might be uncomfortable for some readers.🚩🚩

Half the time Mary was an afterthought as Edie played up being an escort for the baddie that was Luka. They met. He took her. He's an evil man. A bad bad man. She would never. She's above him. These are her thoughts. And yet she did. Over and over.😝😝💸💸💸 Money baby. And their connection was a tell me rather than show me. I didn't get the fuss. There was no build up, no depth of this intense connection. And Luka, goes from calling her not very nice names that mean escort to princess, she's a 'transaction', and he tells her how to groom her lady parts. Really dude?! Let's talk about your furry hairy self shall we? But we don't. Naturally. I didn't like Luka. He was a cliché and an @$$hole. No mafia leader will have a paid call girl sitting at the table while discussing business with his men after one night. And to not run her fingerprints. A man who trusts no one. Enemies galore. Again. It makes no sense. As does being handcuffed to the bed to being free in the space of seconds.😮‍💨😮‍💨

The twist, you will see it. A homemade stick made with celery, chicken bones, thread from socks and hair. What new bizarre is this?? You're joking. Right.😅😅 No. You weren't.lol This is my first book by this author. This was... weird. The idea was there, there were moments that it could have grown into something else, but it didn't. Edie was tstl at times. Everything was about Luka. Ehhh. This wasn't my type of mafia book. If you want to read it, go for it. I hope you enjoy. Happy reading.*•>§<•*🧡🧡🧡🔫

The book, personally, wasn’t as wow as I expected. Narratively, I felt it wandered a bit—the way the protagonists described themselves didn’t always match how they acted. I also wouldn’t really classify it as a dark romance, though I do think it could be a good option for someone wanting to ease into that type of story.

Since it’s been a while since I last read a mafia book, I found it light, easy to read, and not overwhelming. In fact, I started it this morning and finished it in one sitting, when I thought my reading slump wouldn’t even let me get through it. Overall, I did enjoy it—it was different, and while not perfect, I don’t have anything truly negative to say because it managed to keep my attention.

If I were in a heavier reading mood, my review would definitely be longer and more detailed. For now, I’ll give it 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐.

From the very first page I was hooked and I couldn’t put it down!

What starts as a desperate mission to find her missing sister, one night undercover for the police to bug the mafia, turns into something completely unexpected the moment Luka Zogaj walks into the room. Luka completely intrigued Edie (and me 🙈). I loved the tension, the banter, the age gap and the chemistry between them. He wanted her to hate him, and she tried so hard to do just that… but soon everything shifted, and it became clear they couldn’t stay away from each other no matter how hard they try.

This story has everything I love in a dark mafia romance: danger, passion, murders, enemies‑to‑lovers tension and two characters who are perfect for each other even when they try to deny it.

I highly recommend this book! ♥️

It’s been forever since I read one of Annika’s mafia books, and let me just say, I am SO glad she’s back in this genre because she came back swinging! 💕

Luka and Edie? Perfection. Their first meeting had me on my toes, and the way their hate-to-love journey played out (especially from Edie’s side, lol) was written so well. I absolutely loved how Edie went from quiet wallflower to full-on baddie, saving the clan!

The plot? Twisty.
The writing? Addictive.
The spice? 🤌🏼

Add the audiobook? Flawless! Andie and Benjamin’s performance took it all to the next level and sealed this one as a 5-star read/listen for me. 🎧

Without giving away spoilers, I’ll just say this—if you’ve missed Annika’s mafia books… she’s back, baby! And she did not come to play.🙌🏼

Edie Carson is an Medieval History student at Columbia University. She should be studying to maintain her straight A’s, but instead she’s been caught up in searching for her troubled sister. This leads to a sketchy cop, who picks her up on trumped up charges and offers a deal to find her sister in exchange for spying on the Albanian mob. But she’s not trained for this, she protests!

𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘯𝘸𝘳𝘢𝘱 𝘩𝘦𝘳. 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳. 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦.

Luka Zogaj took over the Ghost Hound Clan a month ago, under very mysterious and gory circumstances that still vibrates through the streets of New York. When he spots Edie perched on the lap of one of his creepy lieutenants, curiosity leads to a claiming, which leads to an unprecedented sexual hunger that can’t be sated with one night. Luka, who doesn’t do repeats, demands two weeks of Edie’s “exclusive” services.

𝘚𝘰 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨. 𝘚𝘰 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱. 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥-𝘶𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴.

In the blink of an eye, Edie’s one time deal with the cop becomes an open-ended list of demands! Caught between a criminal and the dubious clutch of the law? How is Edie going to save herself, let alone her sister?

𝘚𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘦’𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨.

Riveting. I agree, Luka. I couldn’t stop listening to this audiobook and finished in a day. The energy between Luka and Edie is smouldering. She wants to hate this filthy criminal but her disdain just turns him on. His strength and potent masculinity turns her on in turn. She refuses to accept his “might is right” worldview, but maybe it fascinates her the same way she’s fanatical about the unhinged realities of the medieval warriors she studies?

𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮: 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵, 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨.

Annika Martin skillfully reveals Luka’s true motivations for returning to Ghost Hound while leading the reader through an escalating buildup of longing. Edie gains insight into Luka’s character, her own morally grey inner compass, and orgasms. Many unbidden orgasms. It’s sexy, and romantic, and exciting. Not too angsty, and the perfect touch of danger throughout. I loved it! The audiobook was superbly performed by Andi Eloise and Benjamin Sands.

The Kingpin’s Call Girl signals a return to Annika Martin’s early dark romances (Prisoner, with Skye Warren, 2014, and Dark Mafia Prince, 2016). She’s such a fabulous writer of this genre. It’s easy to forget this with her fantastically successful string of billionaire rom-coms. I had come to associate her with sunny dispositions and a magically lucky NYC brownstone where love ignites like a spark in a matchbox factory. I can’t wait to read the next in this new mafia series and in the meantime I recommend checking out her past publications.

So glad I got to receive an ARC to read and review!
This book… Just omg.
I find mafia dark romance is always a hit or miss, and this one knocked it out of the park. I also love that it’s not a typical Italian or Russian mafia romance. It’s Albanian with superstitions, bloodlines. Love it!
I absolutely LOVE the entire plot. It was written so well. It literally pulls you in right away and you need to know what the heck is happening next. I never even saw this ending coming.
I love the characters so much. You can picture them all so well, understand them, love them, hate them.
Definitely a must read!

This is a really great pivot from the more lighthearted Billionaire books from this author, into the mafia, dark romance, taboo-ish smut direction. I think she did a great job balancing the dark romance with the heartfelt romance elements, so that it felt like the two main characters were really cute together, but with that stressful edge that comes with mafia related stakes. I really enjoyed it, felt the pacing was good, and the main characters were interesting, likable and believable throughout. I am really looking forward to the next books in this series.
I was provided with an ARC by the author for my honest review.

This is my first book by Annika, and I really enjoyed it. My only dislike was the ending. That felt like it deviated from what we know of the characters. We got a HFN when we should have had a HEA. From the very beginning Luka was very much “you are mine” so why would he not seal the deal? 💍 But her sister does with Orton does? It doesn’t feel like it aligns with what we know of the characters.

Annika Martin has done it again! Mafia romance isn't usually my genre, but Annika's billionaire series is my absolute favorite, so I gave this a try. And oh my god, what can I say—the book was so good. It has just the right amount of mystery, a solid plot, and Annika's brand of quirky humor. I loved every bit of it.

I liked it.

It was entertaining, I really enjoyed the banter and the humor. Edie - the FMC - was snarky, straight shooter and had this great tendency to dive into things head first with hella false bravado. Luka, the MMC, seemed uptight and dark (to start) and you slowly see where the light seeps through, especially when he's a goner for Edie.

I thought it stretched in parts - especially with the whole lore behind the Albanian Mafia, felt like a bit of a hard row to hoe/believe. Edie seemed to get away with a lot, for a college girl messing with the cops & mafia.

However, I did love the grumpy x sunshine combo and how he really got off on her rancor for him. It was weirdly endearing. Liked it enough, wouldn't say I loved it.

Edie was just trying to help find her sister when she accidentally gets caught up in a night that had her being purchased by mafia man, Luka Zoga. Two weeks was what it was supposed to be but when dangerous men don’t want to let go, can it ever have a happy ending? This is an action packed, dark romance from the very first page until the end. This book.
This book was an absolute delight.

Edie is a graduate student and what she wants the most is to find her sister.
A cop knowing her situation and theatening her with prison, manipulates her into going undercover to a bar filled with people in the mafia and that's where she first meets our anti-hero Luka.
Luka is basically who every girls parents warns them to steer clear of.
Luka is also attracted to scornful women it seems.
Wait, no scratch that. Not just any women. He is attracted to scornful Edie who can't hide for the like of her how much she despises criminals and people such as him.
Yes, this powerful and older man is delighted by her hate to the point that when she tries to play the sweet and obedient and peaceful girl, he shuts that down faster than Edie can blink.
My girl really tried and it was the funiest thing to read about. Points for the effort although she should've known.
Absolutelly delicious.

What can I say, I also have a type and it's this book. It scratched a part of my brain that I didn't know needed scratching.

I was slightly anxious while reading this book. You see, Edie was playing with fire trying to play a Mob Boss such as Luka, known to be ruthless in the streets after offing his brother in such a creativelly brutal way and I was constantly trying to shake Edie "girl, what do you think you are doing?" but she was fine.

Annika is surelly a very skilled author and she wrote such a beautiful and compelling story.

If you like Mafia dark Romance with an age-gap and a couple with such intense chemistry, you will love this.

Luka and Edie's story is one that I will be revisiting again because I am quite obsessed with them.
