As a chronically online girlypop, I was stunned to recognize huge chunks of this book from Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. Not even a half-hearted paraphrase, just straight-up word-for-word copy-paste energy. It’s WILD.

Can’t decide if I’m impressed or deeply concerned that this is what passes for a published self-help book these days. Again… WILDDD.

The sort of book I would normally scoff at, but actually it was pretty useful

put me in a rage - most of these ‘profound’ truths were tweets/memes I saw on Instagram when I was 13 🫡🫡 (or common sense?!)

Some helpful reminders, but I found myself thinking "these feel like needlessly dramatic Facebook or Instagram posts" and then I realised this written by an influencer and everything made sense.

A quick easy read that empowers you to value yourself based on your personal growth, rather than others’ opinion. Propels you to move out of comfort zone and challenge those who gaslight you, while being kind, patient and resilient.

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Genre: non-fiction - self improvement, self-care and mindfulness

Does the blurb reflect the plot: yes, perfectly

Sum it up: Gilham burst onto social media during COVID with his short but snappy words of wisdom with reels and posts alike that immediately attracted the masses. Telling us not want we want to hear, but rather what we need to hear, Stop Lying To Yourself is a compilation of one hundred and one of his most hard hitting truths. Whilst some of them can be a bitter pill to swallow, the hard truths and the poignant blurbs that accompany them; are all bang on and written in a way that is both reflective and empowering. I’m not usually into this style of book, but as a follower of Gilham, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to get a copy and I’m very glad I did. It might be a small book in length, but it is mighty in the effect it will have you. A highly recommended read, I’d encourage anyone and everyone to get their hands on a copy.

Who should read it: those who follow Gilham on social media; those who are looking for self improvement, self help and/or self care; and anyone generally who needs to be told that it’s ok to cut off the things that don’t make you happy in all or any of the facets in your life.

Stop Lying To Yourself is my fifteenth read in #ktbookbingo. Category ‘A book that taught you something’. To play along with my book bingo and to see what else I’m reading, go to #ktbookbingo or @peggyanne_readsandruns on Instagram.

A lot of people seem to have enjoyed this book and found it useful... which is great for them. Maybe if you're just starting to look into self-improvement and reflection this could be a good stepping stone.

For me, it felt like a list of tumblr or instagram quotes with a young teenager reflecting on them. I was genuinely quite confused due to the rave reviews and price of this book (£7.99 for the e-book!!). I got to truth 5 before I realised nothing was going to change and this was the premise for the whole thing.

If you want to buy for a kid or you aren't very interested in reading, I would maybe give it a go... But as an adult looking for a self-help/improvement book, I wouldn't bother.

great information but lacking tools to apply that knowledge

I could related with a lot of what you wrote in the book, but I believe this only evokes awareness. There needs to be a mention of some ways to overcome the root cause of such issues. Outer changes unfortunately bring only short term results.

I am a Life Coach and I use a variety of psycho-sensory processes to heal the past trauma and use energy psychology methods to reprogram the subconscious mind. People can related with your knowledge and are getting ready to heal!!

I thought this would be the perfect book to start the New Year with…it wasn’t quite as inspirational as I expected and hoped. Some of the quotes were good and really hit home but others seemed a little bit obvious and didn’t really make me think in the way that I wanted them too. Also, it was very geared towards romantic relationships which isn’t made explicitly clear anywhere on the cover/synopsis, and I had hoped it would be a bit more generic.

Overall, a nice quick, motivational read with the key messages of standing up for yourself, not taking any 💩 and being your own champion. Good messages but quite repetitive!

This is a good book that you can easily dip in and out of. However, I think the advice and explanations could have been a little longer. It felt like a collection of memes, most of which have been circulating online for ages on the author's own socials. The book simply collated them without any more detailed content.

Well, the book by itself is a good effort but there is nothing original about it. The author has collected various self-help and mental health quotes from across social media and has added his own interpretation and explanation with it. Makes for nice reading but nothing so unique or original.

You may have read most of the things in this book on Instagram but it’s no harm to read them again at one place with a little synopsis/ summarisation of it to help you understand what they truly mean.

I really liked this, short punchy and things that make you raise your eyebrows in acknowledgement.

What a great book, thanks Netgalley & the publishers for giving me an ARC.

The self help book I didn't know I needed but am glad that I read.

Its like a series of tweets though not related to one another. Each page is a nugget - to introspect, reflect. Can be read from any page. Good to have it lying around and just open to any page and read a few... always helpful!

Its a lot of sticky note self help. Direct & straight forward, like when o would attend detention in my old high school. i ger it but... it didnt shake me. i needed abit more traumatic truths. it was abit too gentle for me. abit too sombre too.

Awalnya expect bukunya pemaparan gitu, agak kaget isinya quotes aja, setiap halaman isinya quotes dan sedikit penjelasan. Beberapa quotesnya profound, beberapa meh I disagree. All in all balanced dan oke lah. But not worth the price to be frank...

Fabulous little book. I was a bit taken aback by how small it was for the price however there are some valuable lessons. I’m basing entries in my journal round some of the most pertinent ones to me

truthfully, I'm surprised at how many of these quotes I like, and some are even profound. a lot of the quotes about relationships fall flat for me since I'm poly, but some of them resonate deeply.

Whatever I expected, this book wasn't it. It's more like 101 notes. Not what I expected. Sad.
