Nowhere Train

Rate this book
Two-years post end-of-the-world, all Jetilyn Fournier wants to do is learn to navigate a world that is no longer her own. Surviving zombies feels easy, though, compared to dealing with her rocky relationship with her best friend, the death of her mother, her sister's faux happiness, and her father's sudden desire to speak, after decades of silence. Saving herself is not even something she can fit in at the moment.

Enter Devlin Shea: for all intents and purposes, a mortal enemy. Though she should hate him instantly upon contact, she doesn't, and before she knows it, Jett has another life to save.

Told in the surreal prose that Allie Burke has come to be known for, Nowhere Train is the first zombie novel of its kind. At two parts hippie and one part magic, it is as deadly as it is beautiful; as dark as it is hopeful, baring the question in mind: who--and what--are Jett and her family really fighting for?

WOW...what can I say about Nowhere Train? Well author Allie Burke has drawn me into another wonderful dark story. When I was told that it was tied into another series of her's, the Enchanters, that I loved I knew I wanted to read it.

The story is set in post apocalyptic time of what used to be Malibu, California. There are three groups of people, the Holies (hippie like, who don't speak and are pretty easy going), the Gunners (will and do kill anything in their way) and the Enders (zombies). Jett and her family are Holies who come in contact with Devlin, a mortal enemy. When Devlin's father finds out that he is being friendly with Jett, things turn dark. It seems as though a war is going to start and continue between them.

The author writes a very raw, dark story that is very easy to visualize. I liked seeing references of the characters from the Enchanters series and how they tie into these characters. There is romance, which I always love, suspense and lots of action. Overall a great read. This e-book was provided to me for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

What happens when the End comes to Malibu?

Nowhere Train is an ultra-current retelling of the postmodern classic Mad Max; set in, now, not-so-sunny So. Cal. The characters are as vivid as the world is dark. Once you settle into the world, the whole of the story moves at a fairly brisk pace, and drags you delightedly along for the ride.

“When the Enders come to town,” or Nowhere Train – as the author calls it – is definitely in my 2015 recommended reading. Big surprise, right? Allie Burke does it again.

Look out for the ending… you certainly shouldn't see it coming. I know it surprised me. Can’t wait for the next book... or, ya know, more of the story.

Allie Burke does it again.

I was skeptical about a dystopia with zombies, but the author painted a raw visualization of a post-apocalyptic world that really translated at a core level. I enjoyed the suspense at every level, and I was always left guessing where Jett’s heart would take her. It cleverly brings the impossible into reality. It’s a modern day tale that I think everyone will enjoy.

This is the first instalment in the Enders series.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world there are three groups trying to survive. This follows Jetilyn who is a Holie trying to survive in a changed world with her best friend Chris. Jett meets Devlin Shea who is a Gunner but different they should be enemies but Jett is intrigued by him. Devlin’s father is the leader of their group and expects his son to follow in his footsteps, being friends with a Holie is defiantly not allowed. While Jett and her family head home Devlin’s father is close behind waiting for his moment. Who should Jett be most afraid off the Gunners following her, the Enders trying to eat her or the home she is returning to?

I really wasn’t sure about this when I started reading but by the time I finished the first chapter I was hooked. This is well paced with a dark tone that draws you into the action. The imagery was fantastic so you feel totally immersed in the plot. The character development is subtle so you know the characters well. I loved the twists and sudden developments that did shock me on occasion and that is hard to do. Allie Burke has a fantastic way of writing that captures you and doesn’t let go.

Please stick with this book because it is a fantastic take on a Zombie world. The description is breath taking and the plot is enthralling. A great book and a great author. I will defiantly recommend this author and I will look out for her other books .

So, the undead have come. And what's left of a fractured humanity is stuck dealing with them. One one side, we have the Holies - non-violent types - while on the other are the Gunners - pretty sure you can figure that one out. And that's all I'm telling you about the story. Wanna know more? Read it. It's worth it.

Really? How?

Yes, really. And the reason? That, I'll tell you.

Allie has a wonderful way with which she weaves her words like a strange, foul-mouthed love child of Anne Rice and Stephen King. Her prose is uniquely hers and easily pulls you between the pages where it wraps you up in its horrifically sweet words and brightly imagined descriptions that keep from going so overboard you'd rather pluck your eyes out, like other long winded writers out there.

Her style is much like the baby bear's porridge; just frakking right.

Her characters are intriguing (especially the mystery surrounding the Enders' origions) and, more importantly, human, despite certain abilities some of them posses.

The book itself is short and sweet and just the beginning a tale sure to become a new apocalyptic classic. So go right now and purchase your own copy (available in paperback and ebook versions) and meet Jetilyn Fournier and her family of survivors.

Trust me, y'all. You'll frakking love it.

This book had me at a sun "bleeding it's insides all over the sky." It's the nuances in lines like these, these tiny bits of scene setting the reader may or may not pick up on, that help create the vivid and fast-paced world of Nowhere Train. Burke builds this story like an intricate puzzle, each word working with the next to create a masterful tale. As a fan of zombies I'm a bit biased, sure. I'm automatically going to be drawn to the story. But even those readers who aren't into reanimated creatures will find themselves tethered to this story simply because it is not your usual zombie story.

Woven into all the darkness of this post-apocalyptic tapestry is a band of pure light fans of fantasy are going to adore. If zombies aren't cool enough, magic rises off these pages like sweet music. And, I'm not going to lie. I wanted to sing along.

The characters are believable despite this being a world of dead things...and magic...and a whole slew of things you just don't see everyday. Burke makes it so with dialogue that is so real a reader can feel these characters' pulses and pacing that keeps up with the rhythm.

A readers senses and sensibilities are taken on quite a ride through this one. And BUCKLE UP for the ending.

Disclaimer: Whilst I bought this book out of my own money, Allie is published and represented by Booktrope, the same publisher which is releasing my debut novella, No Rest for the Wicked.

Oh, sheeeit – it’s only the SocialBookshelves.com most anticipated book of 2015! It’s a bit like 28 Days Later mixed with Underworld, only it’s a book and it’s a hell of a lot better. Also, there are f-bombs in the book, and they sound really fucking natural. My only complaint? It’s too short, and the first part of a trilogy – it should’ve just been one book!
