This book is a practical guide to changing inhibiting or "no longer useful" "pyramids" of language that road block our desired paths in life. The author distinguishes between "internal reality," which we ourselves shape, using "blocks" of language, and external or objective reality out there, which is also created, by societal language and "norms;" those communal expectations that can sometimes limit individual paths to creating the "life" we want.
The aspect of the book that was most useful to me was the reiteration about practicing "the pause" and identifying messages as things which may be interpreted when communicated to an individual as part subjective- "internal reality" "stories we habitually tell ourselves/beliefsystems" (my words) and the "real world out there" (my words) "objective reality" (the author's meaning) By "receiving the message" and deliberately not contaminating it with our own material, we see things for what they are, and with clarity. The exercises in the book give a practical application to the theory.
The author's approach reminded me of the theories of symbolic interactionists, and also of the Sapir Whorf hypothesis, which shows how meaning, and reality is shaped by language because all our thoughts, what is significant and important to us in life is created and revealed by the language we know and use.
What I didn't like about the book were some of the analogies the author used - especially "tiles"- and I thought that visual diagrams would have worked much better.
I also felt that the book was a little naive in that although it acknowledged the dialectical nature of the subjective and objective realities, it failed to take into account any history. For example, the author states, " the myths of racial superiority that justified slavery are no longer controlling my society." By just making this statement it's almost as if the author attempts to brush away the harsh realities of modern day slavery - extremely low wages for workers, prostitution as part of trafficking, to name just a couple of examples. There are those in the power "elite" who control society that still get away with justifying discrimination and slavery, and no amount of wishful thinking will change that harsh reality for as long as the language that money speaks is more important than human rights.

Nathan Max Osorio’s You Begin with Language is not your typical communication manual, it’s a profound exploration of how language underpins every part of our human experience. Instead of surface-level techniques or social scripts, this book takes a deeper, more holistic approach. Osorio's introduces the concept of Big “L” Language, expanding the reader’s understanding of communication as more than just words, it’s about presence, perception, and conscious creation.

What stood out most to me was how Osorio simplifies a very complex subject into three actionable steps, without oversimplifying its depth. His writing is clear but intellectually engaging, offering both insight and practical application. I appreciated how he frames language as something we participate in, not just something we use. That shift in perspective alone makes this book powerful.
