Warning: Extreme swoon factor. Honestly, there is something so...heart palpitating...about a clueless, macho guy taking on baby duty. All those bumbling good intentions, the earnest fumblings, the dear-in-the-headlights gaze. And when the baby starts to make inroads into his tough-as-nails construction worker heart, well...all I'm saying is have a fainting couch on hand! There are some deliciously endearing scenes. And plenty of funny ones. Not to mention heart-tugging. Jake and Violet get off to a rocky start, but as they bond over baby, their relationship transforms into something promising -- until a few complications hold their happily ever after hostage. I gobbled this one up in a day.
LOVED this special story of HOPE and SECOND CHANCES!
The Doctor's Second Chance, by Missy Tippens, drew me immediately into Appleton, Georgia, where Jake and Violet meet because of a precious newborn baby, Abby. Their lives are imperfect, but are filled with trying to be honorable, even during the hard situations they face.
In a very touching scene, tears spilled down my cheeks as I could feel the difficulty these people had in making the right decisions. I love when an author touches my heart and emotions that strongly.....and Missy Tippens does that well....and provides a perfect ending.
In the note to her readers, Missy reminds us “even though our lives may not turn out as we planned, we discover God blesses us with something even better.” This encouraging story expresses this thought through a beautiful love story…a story filled with the promise of hope and the gift of second chances. I highly recommend this delightful story which warms the heart!
"There are a number of comical scenes — such as a crash course in baby care for the single bachelor — as well as heartbreaking ones, too. There are some familiar characters, and some that you hope to see again. The ending is one that may just surprise the reader" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).
I really enjoyed this book! It's a short read -- I finished it within one day -- but it didn't feel rushed or abrupt. I liked the characters and the storyline. It's a good one! :)
It started out rough, didn't impress me much as it went on, and ended meh. So I guess... three stars?
By the way, this is #2 in a series, only it doesn't say that. Anywhere. The first book is 'The Guy Next Door', and I only found out because of copious references to Darcy's happily ever after (hint, hint) in this book, referencing something that came before. ((sigh.))
Violet is a pediatrician who mostly spends NO time working in the book. She's got a 'failing' pediatric office (!?) because Jake has bad-mouthed her around town when she bought out his aunt and uncle, the former (now retired) pediatricians. Which... I highly doubt a town big enough to have a college, that he could have that kind of effect. Just sayin'.
And this whole thing with his aunt/uncle/failing business thing is NEVER resolved, which is kind of bad writing, there. If the lawyer says she paid a fair price, why weren't the aunt/uncle setting the record straight as they were closing up their side of things? NONE of this jives.
Jake basically raised his cousin Remy because his aunt and uncle were SOOOOOO busy with pediatrics (?!?!?!) that they were never around. SAME practice, so... what gives? It makes no sense. But now Cousin Remy's shown up at age 29 or something and she's got a baby she dumps on Jake and takes off. She's been on drugs, in a violent relationship, alcoholic boyfriend, who-knows-what... she's older than Jake, but he 'raised' her and now he's got her baby. He knows NOTHING about parenting, so he turns to the pediatrician.
That he hates. Instead of women in his church. Who conveniently are all far toooooo busy. And the pediatrician conveniently lives next door.
(((sigh.)))
Then there's the cover. Violet has curly black hair in the book, and Jake has brown hair, a full beard, is 6'something tall and burly. On the cover, however, Violet has straight brown hair, and Jake has no beard and is about as far from a burly construction worker as you can get. He looks more like a tennis-playing yuppie on the cover. Ugh, ugh, ugh.
Just a personal peeve, but WHY does EVERY Love, Inspired author have to have the minister preach the prodigal son? GAH, I'm so S.I.C.K. of the same sermon, every. single. book...!!!
Violet buys tons of disposable diapers for Abigail, teaches Jake to put one on... and then on pg 77 he's apparently cloth diapering? Because she pulls out a fresh cloth diaper from the pile. What the farts!? Then the rest of the book, it's back to disposables. I... it's... no words...
Jake holds the baby a ton in the book, but whenever Violet is watching the kid, it's dumped in a bouncer or car-seat or crib. She doesn't put herself out with physical contact much with the baby, and that peeved me. A lot.
The relationship between Jake and Violet leaves a lot to be desired, too. It's stilted and awkward, more doctor/patient than anything else, and when they do get together it's too rushed to draw us in.
And as another reviewer said, the melodrama is off the charts here. 'I had a baby and I WANTED him, and because I was afraid I gave him up and I hate my life, my parents, my old friends, God, and Jake, too - after all, he sabotaged my business!' ((insert another sigh.))
I'm not saying it's a bad read. Jake is amazing. I just wish he *didn't* end up with Violet. There wasn't a commendable thing about her. She was a lousy doctor, had virtually no faith or interest in a personal relationship with the Lord, a crappy mother (including her stints babysitting), a pitiful daughter, and not even that great a friend to Jake.
There are better books out there. This isn't one of them.
Picked up this book because it is written by someone in my book club... it falls into the inspirational romance category and it delivers a sweet, uplifting story.
Jake West has no experience in parenthood - none. So when his disfunctional cousin who he was raised with suddenly lays a baby at his feet and asks him to care for her, he's totally out of his element. The only person he knows to ask is the pediatrician who took over his uncle's practice, Violet Crenshaw. Violet resents him for spreading rumors that she stole his uncle's practice.
As they join forces to take care of the little baby, they start feeling like a family. Their relationship grows from "Christian love" to concern for a baby to something made of mutual love and respect. But violet has something from her past that's holding her back, and when she goes against an important decision that is made, it may wreck any hope of romance!
This was a very sweet book. Though I knew where it was going to go in the end, I held out hope it wouldn't...
SPOILER BELOW: I was not happy with the way Remy treated Jake. He did a big thing for her and let his heart go there. I think he deserved a little more than she gave him in the end...My heart went out to Jake who had his world ripped apart so suddenly without much consideration for his feelings...
I scored free copies of all of the Love Inspired books releasing on April 21st, and this one was by far my favorite!!!
It was the second book by Missy Tippens that I had read, and I knew going in that she was an awesome author, and she didn't disappoint!
What would you do if you were a single guy who suddenly found himself responsible for an infant that was just a few weeks old? No notice. One moment you were sitting there drinking coffee and the next you were looking at a screaming baby with no one to help you?
Enlist help of course.
However, the best person to help also happens to be a ruthless business woman who devastated your family when she moved to town.
Can Jake suck up his pride and do what's right for his new responsibility... and do it without letting the baby take hold of his heart, because surly her mom will be coming back to get her... right?
Once I opened this book, there was no stopping until I turned the final page. Missy Tippens did a marvelous job of tearing my heart out, complete with real tears and moments of laughter. Going through the emotionally charged situation of caring for a new baby with Jake and feeling the intensity of Violet's heart longings and past hurts made The Doctor's Second Chance an unforgettable story. Experiencing Jake and Violet's sweet romance through their eyes was heartwarming. I was thrilled to return to Appleton Georgia, a little town I fell in love with in Missy's book, The Guy Next Door. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Jake, Violet and little Abigail, and it was great to reconnect with Chloe and Darcy. As always, Missy Tippens has written a beautiful story of faith and romance, spilling her heart over the pages to touch yours in a way you never expected.
Parts of this story were cute, but I think I’ve finally overdosed on too much “Love Inspired” silliness and sappiness! For the most part, this was a major eye-roll book! So many aspects of this story were terribly unrealistic and required major suspension of disbelief. Lots of small hokey bits that just started to add up to the point of serious annoyance. Ridiculous. Contrived. Melodrama. Cheesiness. The hero was okay, but the heroine was annoying and completely unbelievable as a doctor. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ All of that said, it was still a sweet story. But, to me, the writing was nowhere near as good as A House Full of Hope by the same author. I highly recommend reading that other one first.
Wonderful, tender story. A tiny baby helps her cousin and also her doctor to learn to trust again. This was well written. I fell in love with the characters especially the baby. But I especially loved the Inspirational thread throughout the whole book. Here is a favorite quote from this book."God it's me again. I don't know what to do...I can't do this anymore. I can't do this all by myself. I've made a mess of every relationship in my life. I need you to take over." I look forward to reading more books by this great author.
I enjoyed reading The Doctor's Second chance by Missy Tippens. Jake West's cousin left her two week old daughter with Jake. She said she didn't want the baby. She had been on drugs and an abusive boyfriend. Pediatrician Violet Crenshaw helps him learn how to care for a baby. They both end up loving the baby. Plus falling in love themselves. Babies mother comes back into the picture. Lots of hurt feeling at first. A must read.
If you want a sweet love story to enjoy, The Doctor's Second Chance is it. The characters pulled me into the story and I enjoyed seeing how the hero and heroine came together to help an innocent baby.

(I won this book on Seekerville blog, but I was not required to give a review.)
Very sweet book. I enjoyed it from beginning to end and fell in love with Violet immediately. I wish I had a huge review to write for this book but honestly this book is just a feel good book. There are a twist or 2 but really just a straight forward story of love, forgiveness, and patience. And of course faith in what God is doing.
I liked this book. A strong women and a bachelor who is a gentleman. I found Violet and Jake were very like-able, each with their own set of problems that would bring them together.. A story that was interesting from start to finish. I was gifted a copy for my honest opinion by FlyBy Promotions.
I loved this book! Missy Tippens grabbed my heart with the issues these two face without overkill. They actually act mature and reasonable when a lot of heroes and heroines would have more difficulty then they should in overcoming whatever has caused the rift. Great job!
Good story. What's not to like about a guy trying to take care of a baby by himself? Some of the characterization and resolution felt a little too forced. Maybe that was just because of the length of the book. Still, it's a satisfying read that kept me turning pages until it was over.
This was a great novel. I loved Violet and Jake separately but even more together. They both grew so much by the end of the novel. Only the ending, however, was not to my liking. I wasn't expecting it. I read Love Inspired precisely for the expected endings, so that aspect definitely bugged me.
