Fhiona has been an illustrator for quite a number of years now. She works mainly for young children's books and therefore enjoys a day full of drawing animals and other such fun subjects. Fhiona lives in the the West of Scotland with her graphic designer husband, and Double Doodle dog! When not working she enjoys walking, running, reading, watching films and eating hummus in large quantities.
Jack borrowed this book from the Ashland Public Library. It’s adorable! A puppy and kitty say everything that’s wonderful about fall, which is our family’s favorite season. The illustration style is so cute. Jack loved following the puppy and kitty from page to page.
The text of this book consists almost entirely of one sentence, which lists all the things typically associated with the arrival of Fall: scarecrows, mittens, Halloween, acorns, and more. The illustrations show a black dog and an orange cat (festively colored) enjoying each of the different Fall events and activities. At the end of the story, the two friends conclude that they love Fall.
Little Miss Muffet definitely understood the spirit of this book from the very first reading, as she refers to it not by its title, but as the “I love Fall book.” The text seems to engage her more fully than the text of Where is the Pumpkin? and since she probably can’t remember last Fall, she is learning what to expect from the season with each re-reading. I also prefer this title over Where is the Pumpkin? as the artwork is better connected to what the text is trying to convey, and the overall color scheme feels festive and exciting. This is also the most story time friendly board book about Fall I have read, and I think it would work for a small group read-aloud, as the illustrations are big and bold even if the book is on the smaller side.
