Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Early Life and Background:
Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.

Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.

Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).

Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

One of the more intriguing Feluda stories this time. Three children of Boschupur's Acharya family - Devnarayan, Harinarayan and Indranarayan Even though the first couple of big servants and family members kept their family strong, Indranarayan was a bit strange - a man with music and a song called India Opa named a journey. Although the brothers did not take care of him, he became quite famous as a playwright - and that fame might have become a danger to him.

A felicitous family, and seemingly a faraway journey to the world of Satyajit Ray, another Feluda archeology of Satyajit Ray - Bozpukur Khunkharpi.

ছোট্ট একটা বিরতির পর আবার ফেলুদা পড়লাম। এর মধ্যে কলেজের ইয়ার চেঞ্জ পরীক্ষা হয়ে গিয়েছে। পরীক্ষার মধ্যে ফেলুদা হাতে নেওয়ার সাহস করিনি। একবার কোন গল্প পড়া শুরু করলে তো আর ফেলে রাখবার উপায় নেই, তাই এই বিরতি। তবে এতে উপকারই হয়েছে। ফেলুদার এর আগের গল্পগুলো পড়ার সময় গল্পগুলো একই ধাঁচের মনে হচ্ছিল। সেইটা কেটে গেছে। ফেলুদার এবারের রহস্য ইন্দ্রনারায়ন আচার্যের খুন নিয়ে। খুনের দুদিইন আগেই তিনি ফেলুদার কাছে গিয়েছিলেন সাহায্য চাইতে। বোসপুকুরের বিখ্যাত আচার্য পরিবারের কনিষ্ঠ সন্তান ইন্দ্রনারায়ন সার্কাসের হয়ে কাজ করেন। তার জন্যই মুলত ভারত অপেরা তুমুল জনপ্রিয়, কিন্তু ভারত অপেরার মূল প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী বীনাপানি অপেরা মেনে নিতে পারত না। তাকা ইন্দ্র কে অনেক বেশী টাকা অফার করে বীণাপাণি অপেরার হয়ে কাজ করার জন্য, তবে ইন্দ্রনারায়ণ রাজি ছিলেন না।

এদিকে ইন্দ্রের দুই ভাই তাকে থিক পছন্দ করতেন না। তারা মনে করতেন ইন্দ্রের সার্কাসের হয়ে খেলা দেখানো তাদের প্রিবারের উপর কলঙ্কস্বরূপ, আমার ইন্দ্রের আয় ও ছিল তাদের চেয়ে ঢের বেশী। উপরন্তু তাদের বাবা কনিষ্ঠ সন্তানকেই সর্বাপেক্ষা বেশী ভালো বাসতেন।

ফেলুদার অন্য অনেক গল্পের মতো এখানেও জড়িয়ে আছে বিভিন্ন ঐতিহাসিক সূত্র। ষোড়শ-সপ্তদশ শতাব্দীর ইতালির বিখ্যাত বেহালা প্রস্তুতকারক নিকোলা আমাটির একটি বেহালাকে কেন্দ্র করেই গড়ে ওঠে গল্পের দ্বিতীয় ক্রাইমটি।
এ গল্পের সাস্পেক্ট আর রহস্য দুটোই সখ্যায় নেহাৎ কম না। ফেলুদার মগজের ঝলক আরেকবার দেখা গে এই গল্পে। তবে জটায়ুর কথাটা কিন্তু ষোল আনা সত্যি,

তোমার দাদার সব ভাল শুধু এক এক সময় চুপ মেরে যাওয়ার ব্যাপারটা মোটে বরদাস্ত করা যায় না।

৮৫'র মধ্য-শেষে মাত্র চারদিনে লেখা উপন্যাসটাও সমাপ্ত হলো মধ্য-শীতের আবহে, সানডে সাসপেন্স এর কল্যাণে (থ্র্যাংক্স ফর মি. সব্যসাচী এন্ড কোং!) উপন্যাসের কাহিনি এগিয়েছে বোসপুকুরের বিখ্যাত এক পরিবারের ছেলের মার্ডার কেস সলভ করতে করতে, এরমধ্যে ফেলুদা হত্যার রহস্য চষে বেড়িয়েছেন, সমাধান করেছেন, সাথে তদন্তে বের করে এনেছেন আরেকটি উপড়ি অপরাধের কথাও!
সবমিলিয়েই ফেলুমিত্তির জমে ভালো—তবে এবারের গল্পের কাহিনির প্রস্থ-স্বল্পতায় বেশ হতাশই হতে হয়েছে কেননা গল্পের শুরুতে তোপসে মারফত যেমন জানা যায় এটার রহস্য উদঘাটনে ফেলুদার বুদ্ধির শেষ কণাটুকু ব্যবহার করতে হয়েছিলো—অন্তত সেরকম রহস্যজট খুলবার যেই দীর্ঘ বর্ণনা/কাহিনির প্রয়োজন, সেরকমটা থাকলে মন্দ হতো না।

বি.দ্র. মিউজিক্যাল ইনস্ট্রুমেন্ট কিংবা মধ্যযুগীয় মিউজিশিয়ানসদের কয়েকটা রেফারেন্স রয়েছে, এটা হলো বোনাস!

ফেলুদার গল্পগুলোর মধ্যে এটা একটু underappreciated বলে আমার মত। বনেদি বাড়ির ছোট ছেলের খুনের তদন্ত মোড় নেয় এক বহু পুরনো কিংবদন্তি বাদ্যযন্ত্রের সুলুকসন্ধানে। সন্দেহের আঁচ নিখুঁত পরিমিতিতে লেখক বিতরণ করেন উপস্থিত সমস্ত কুশীলবদের মধ্যে। তারপর সে জাল গুটিয়েও আনেন নিরলস দক্ষতায়। কিন্তু শেষমেষ যে ব্যক্তি অপরাধী প্রমাণিত হলেন, তাতে একটু নিরাশ হতে হয়। কারণ আশ্রিত ও ভৃত্যশ্রেণীর মানুষের উপর গৃহস্থের প্রথম সন্দেহ গিয়ে পড়ে এমনিতেই। সেই stereotype সত্য প্রমাণিত না হলেই হয়তো হতো ভালো।

ভালই ছিল এই বইটার কাহিনী। ফেলুদার মাথা খাটানির দেখা পাওয়া গেল বেশ ভাল ভাবেই। কাহিনী তেমন উল্লেখযোগ্য না হলেও খারাপ ছিল না। ফেলুদার বইগুলো আসলে এখন পর্যন্ত একটাও পড়ে খারাপ লাগেনি। কাহিনী তেমন আহামরি না হলেও ভাল লাগে।

Feluda was originally written by Satyajit Ray for the children’s magazine ‘Sandesh’. The popularity of the series was such that Ray went on to include a few adult themes in the later stories when he realized that even adults were enjoying the series.
I actually read Feluda before Agatha Christie and as such Feluda was my introduction to detective fiction. The best part of the stories is the evergreen manner of Ray’s narrative. I remember reading ‘Baadhshahi Angti’ which was written in 1960s and when I visited Lucknow in 1990s, I could still recognize the places described in the book. The other thing that I loved about the series was that in every story we learned something new – be it about geometry or about telepathy.
Absolutely and irrevocably in love with Feluda and his adventures – forever a fan.

Our detective trio, led by Feluda, finds themselves investigating a complex case involving Indranarayan Acharya, a talented playwright, lyricist, and violinist for the renowned Bharat Opera jatra troupe. Despite his aristocratic family background, the Bosepukur Acharyas, Indranarayan chose a career in jatra, becoming instrumental to Bharat Opera's success. He visits Feluda, reporting a recent assault in a dark alley near his office, where an unknown assailant tried to hit him with a rod, narrowly missing his head. Feluda, initially dismissive, suggests reporting the incident to the police, deeming it a potential robbery rather than a targeted attack, but remains intrigued by Indranarayan's unusual family history.

Indranarayan, a celebrated playwright and musician for Bharat Opera, is nearing the completion of his play, "Samrat Ashok," but faces persistent pressure from rival jatra companies, especially Binapani Opera, to switch loyalties with higher financial offers. Despite the temptation of a significantly increased salary, he is reluctant to leave Bharat Opera after seventeen years, citing loyalty and a long-standing relationship. He dismisses a recent assault as a mere robbery attempt, not related to the rivalry. After another inconclusive meeting with Ashwini Bhar of Binapani Opera, Indranarayan returns to his work, fully engrossed in crafting what he believes will be his masterpiece. However, his focus is tragically interrupted when an unknown assailant enters his study and delivers a fatal blow with a pestle and killed.
Pradyumna explains that he has been working on Kandarpanarayan's biography for about six months. He stumbled upon Kandarpanarayan's name while researching for a 19th-century novel at the National Library, which led him to the Acharya family. Kirtinarayan offered him accommodation and a fee to conduct his research from the house while also assisting with some of his work, prompting Pradyumna to leave his newspaper job.
Feluda then produces a piece of paper with "HAPPY BIRTHDAY HUKUM CHAND" written on it, asking Pradyumna if it fell from his pocket. Pradyumna denies any knowledge of the paper or the name "Hukum Chand," suggesting it might have been placed in his pocket on a crowded bus
Feluda and Lalmohan Babu visit Bharat Opera, Indranarayan's workplace, for the murder investigation, where they speak with the owner, Sarat Bhattacharya.
Feluda interrogated Leena, Indranarayan's niece, middle brother Harinarayan, eldest brother Debnarayan.

Feluda is shocked to read in the newspaper about the murder of Indranarayan Acharya. Despite the police being called, the seventy-nine-year-old Kirtinarayan, Indranarayan's father, summons Feluda to investigate. Kirtinarayan, a retired barrister, is a great admirer of detective stories. Feluda.


Feluda gathers information on Debnarayan and Harinarayan's club habits, discovering that Debnarayan is a heavy drinker and Harinarayan is a compulsive gambler with mounting debts. from newspaper feluda appearing to grasp a new insight then Feluda announces they will all go to the horse races that afternoon in disguise.

Pradyumna calls, claiming a thief attempted to steal from Indranarayan's room at midnight, but he scared them off, injuring his knee in the process. Feluda, believing the stolen plays and songs are the motive behind the murder, devises a plan to stake out the Acharya house along with Lalmohan Babu and Haripad Babu. That night, sitting under a lamp post, they observe Ashwinibabu, the manager of Binapani Opera, discreetly enter and exit the Acharya house around midnight.


Feluda calls Pradyumna, who discovers that Indranarayan's new plays and songs are missing from his room. Feluda then contacts Manilal Poddar, thanking him for removing his men from the alley and stating his belief that Ashwinibabu, the manager of Binapani Opera, stole the valuable papers last night. Later, Feluda places a mysterious advertisement for a "good violin" in the newspaper, which leads him to Loudon Street, hinting at a deeper mystery. On Saturday, Feluda, seemingly having solved the case, arranges a meeting at the Acharya house with Kirtinarayan, his two sons, and Pradyumna. During the meeting, Feluda systematically eliminates other suspects, revealing that Pradyumna, a gambler with financial troubles and a history of lying, had the motive and opportunity to kill Indranarayan and later sell the stolen manuscripts to Ashwinibabu. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HUKUM CHAND are the names of horses 🐎 of race course. Feluda identified Pradyumna at the race course. Also the attack on him was a lie because he forgot to limp sometimes.

Feluda reveals the second crime: the theft and replacement of Indranarayan's antique violin. He explains that he became suspicious of the violin's pristine condition and later confirmed through Kandarpanarayan's diary that it was a valuable "Amati" violin, purchased for 2,000 pounds. Feluda deduces that the original violin was swapped for a cheap replica after Indranarayan's murder, and his suspicion falls on Harinarayan, who was in debt from gambling and knowledgeable about foreign music. To confirm this, Feluda places an advertisement for a good foreign violin, leading him to an antique dealer who confirms purchasing the Amati from "Mr. Acharya" for a significant sum. Harinarayan confesses silently to the crime, prompting Kirtinarayan to lament the loss of the family heirloom and express his disappointment in Pradyumna's dishonesty.

ফেলুদার কাছে একদিন বোসপুকুরের বিখ্যাত জমিদার বাড়ির ছোট ছেলে ইন্দ্রনারায়ণ এসে হাজির হয়। পেশায় অত্যন্ত সফল যাত্রা নাটকের লেখক, গীতিকার এবং সুরকার ইন্দ্রের ধারণা তাকে কেউ হত্যা করতে চায়। হত্যার মোটিভ হিসেবে যাত্রাপালার প্রতিযোগিতা কারণ হিসেবে উল্লেখ করে ইন্দ্র। ফেলুদা পুলিসকে জানাতে বলে বিদায় করে দেয় ইন্দ্রকে। দুদিন পরেই খুন হয় ইন্দ্রনারায়ণ। এবার ইন্দ্রের বাবার কাছে থেকে এত্তেলা পেয়ে খুনের রহস্যের সমাধানে নামে ফেলুদা। কিন্তু বাড়িভর্তি সব সন্দেহজনক মানুষজন। আবার যাত্রাপালার প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বীতার ফলও হতে পারে এই খুন।
বরাবরের মতই ভাল লেগেছে ফেলু মিত্তিরের কাণ্ডকারখানা। এবারের গল্পে ফেলুদার মাথা খাটানি আর দৌড়াদৌড়ি ভালই হয়েছে।

ইন্দ্রনারায়ণ এক থিয়েটারে কাজ করে । সে ফেলুদার সাহায্য চেতে এসেছে কারণ তার প্রান ঝুকিতে। ফেলুদা সাবধান থাকতে বলেছিলো। কিন্তু ২ দিন পরই ইন্দ্রবাবু খুন হয়। বীনাপানির ম্যানেজার অশ্বিনীবাবু ইন্দ্রবাবুকে অনেক প্রেশার দিচ্ছে ভারত অপেরা ছেড়ে তার দলে যোগ দিতে। তদন্ত করে জানা যায় যে আসলে ইন্দ্রকে খুন করে প্রদ্যুম্নবাবু। তিনি ঘোড়া রেসে পয়সা হারিয়েছেন। তাই টাকার জন্য খুন করে ইন্দ্রবাবুর লেখা, নাটক বীনাপানির ম্যানেজারকে দিয়ে দেয়। আর মেজো ভাই হরিনারয়ণবাবুও জুয়া খেলে পয়সা হারিয়ে ইন্দ্রবাবু একটি ক্লাসিক বেহালা বেঁচে দেয়।

বহুদিন পর বই পড়লাম, বলতে গেলে ২২ সালে এই প্রথম বই পড়া। কি দিয়ে শুরু করবো ভেবে পাচ্ছিলাম না, শেষমেশ ফেলুদা দিয়ে start করলাম।

খুব যে উত্তেজনাময় গল্পটা.... তা লাগেনি, তবে খারাপও না। যাত্রাদলের এক খ্যাতনামা লোক ইন্দ্রনারায়ণ আচার্য খুন হন, তারই খুনের তদন্তে নামে ফেলুদা। এই গল্পে তোপসে ও লালমোহন বাবুও উপস্থিত।

রহস্য উৎঘাটন এর পর মাথায় শুধু একটা কথা আসছে,

এবং এই একটি শিক্ষায় এই গল্প হতে নিজের ভেতর ধারণ করলুম।
