About the author

Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Early Life and Background:
Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.

Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.

Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).

Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

কেমন জানি ফেলুদার আগেই রহস্যের জট খুলে ফেলসিলাম, এতো বছর সাথে থেকেও জটায়ু যেটা পারলো না, তা করে ফেলার পরেও আনন্দ লাগছেনা এই ভেবে যে গল্পগুলোতে রহস্য কমে গেলো না তো? বড় হয়ে গেছি?

বাইরে বৃষ্টি পড়ছে, তার মধ্যে চা আর ডালমুটটা জমেছে ভালো। তিনজনের আড্ডা চলছে বেশ জমিয়ে। লালমোহনবাবু একচল্লিশটা রহস্য উপন্যাস লিখেছেন, কিন্তু তার বেশির ভাগই ফেলুদার ভাষায় থোড় বড়ি খাড়া, খাড়া বড়ি থোড়। তবে প্লটের জন্য মাথা খুঁড়লেও ভদ্রলোকের উৎসাহের অভাব নেই। আর সত্যি বলতে কি, ফেলুদার সঙ্গে বন্ধুত্ব হবার পর থেকে ওনার গল্পও অনেক ইমপ্রুভ করে গেছে।

‘শ্রীনাথকে একটু বলোনা ভাই তপেশ,’ বললেন লালমোহনবাবু, ‘আর এক কাপ চা হলে মন্দ হত না।’ শ্রীনাথকে চায়ের ফরমাশ দিয়ে আসতেই দরজায় টোকা পড়ল। সাথে ট্যাক্সি থামার শব্দ পাওয়া গেল।
তোপসে দরজা খুলে দেখে ছাতা মাথায় এক ভদ্রলোক, মাঝারি হাইট, ফরসা রং, দাড়ি গোঁফ কামানো, বয়স চল্লিশ-পঁয়তাল্লিশ। ভদ্রলোক নিজের পরিচয় দিয়ে নিলেন। ওনার নাম মহীতোষ রায়। 'নাম শুনে চিনবেন ততটা আশা করি না, যদিও থিয়েটার লাইনে আমার কিছুটা খ্যাতি আছে।’ বললেন ভদ্রলোক। ফেলুদা বলল, ‘আপনি ত অপ্সরা থিয়েটারে আছেন, তাই না?’ তিনি বললেন, ‘ঠিকই ধরেছেন। এখন প্রফুল্লতে অভিনয় করছি।’
উনি নিজের সমস্যাগুলো বলতে শুরু করলেন। ‘কদিন থেকে আমি হুম্‌কি চিঠি পাচ্ছি। কার কাছ থেকে তা বলতে পারব না।’ বললেন ভদ্রলোক।

ভদ্রলোক পকেট থেকে চারটি কাগজ বার করলেন, তারপর সেগুলো টেবিলের উপর রাখলেন। দেখা গেল একটায় লেখা ‘সাবধান!’ আরেকটায় ‘তোমার দিন ফুরিয়ে এল’, আরেকটায় ‘তোমার দুষ্কৃতির ফল ভোগ কর’, আর চার নম্বরটায় ‘আর সময় নেই। এবার ইষ্টনাম জপ কর!’ গোটা গোটা বড় বড় অক্ষরে লেখা, আর সবই যে এক লোকের লেখা তা বোঝবার উপায় নেই।

‘এসব কি ডাকে এসেছে?’ ফেলুদা জিগ্যেস করল।

‘আজ্ঞে হ্যাঁ।’

‘এগুলো কদিনের মধ্যে পেয়েছেন?’

‘সাতদিন।’

ভদ্রলোক থিয়েটারে কাজ করেন। অনেকের সাথেই ছোটখাটো ঝগড়া, মনোমালিন্য—এ লেগেই আছে। তিনি দুবছর হল অপ্সরায় আছেন, তার আগে রূপমঞ্চে ছিলেন। ওনাকে নেওয়া হয় একটি অভিনেতার জায়গায়। স্বভাবতই সে অভিনেতা এতে সন্তুষ্ট হয়নি। সে নিশ্চয় ঈর্ষায় ভুগছে। ওনার একটি ছোট ভাই আছে, তার সঙ্গে ওনার বনে না। সে আলাদা থাকে। ওনার বাবার মৃ*ত্যুতে সম্পত্তি সব উনি পান। ওনার ছোট ভাই অসৎ সঙ্গে পড়ে নষ্ট হয়ে যায়। ওনার বাবা তাই তাকে উইল থেকে বাদ দেন। ছোট ভাই স্বভাবতই খুব অসন্তুষ্ট হয়। সন্দেহের তালিকায় শত্রুর তাই অভাব নেই বোধহয়।

ফেলুদা ওনাকে সাবধান থাকতে বলে সেদিনের মতো আলোচনা তো শেষ করলো কিন্তু তারপর ঘটে গেল কান্ড। আচমকা ভদ্রলোক নিখোঁজ। এবং এটা অ*পহরণ নাকি হ*ত্যা তদন্তে এবার মাঠে নামলো ফেলুদা। দেখা যাক রহস্যের সমাধান কী হয়।

🍌পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়া 🍌

সত্যজিৎ রায়ের ফেলুদা বরাবরই আমার প্রিয়। সিরিজের কয়েকটি বই বাকি ছিল পড়া। খুঁজে খুঁজে চেষ্টা করলাম সেগুলো পড়ে শেষ করতে। "অপ্সরা থিয়েটারের মা*মলা" সেগুলোর মধ্যে অন্যতম। এবং ছোট আকারের বইটি পড়তে খুব বেশি সময়ও অবশ্য লাগেনি।

ছোট বই হলেও মোটামুটি ভালো। খুব বেশি জমজমাট গল্পের প্লট নয়। এবং বেশ সাদামাটা ইতি টেনেছেন লেখক। তবুও আসলে তিনজনের এই কেমিস্ট্রি সবসময় আমার বেশ ভালো লাগে। জটায়ু থাকলে যেন গল্পে প্রাণ ফিরে আসে। এবং সত্যজিৎ রায়ের ফেলুদা সিরিজের যে গল্পগুলো জটায়ু ছাড়া আমার মনে হয় জটায়ুর হাস্যরস থেকে সেই গল্পগুলো বঞ্চিত। উনি থাকলে মশাই গল্প বেশ জমে ওঠে। থিয়েটার নিয়ে ঘটনা চাইলে হয়তো আরেকটু টুইস্ট দেয়া যেত। বেশ সাদামাটা হলেও অবশ্য সত্যজিৎ নিজের লেখনী দিয়ে উতরে গেছেন দারুন ভাবে।

ছোট আকারের বইটি পড়ে ভালো লেগেছে। তবে আর কী ছোট সাইজের তো তাই অতটা বোধহয় উত্তেজনা বিরাজ করেনি গোটা গল্পে। আমি শুধু ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরি দেখছিলাম মনযোগ দিয়ে।

**Mahitosh Roy**, a prominent actor at the Apsara Theatre, seeks Feluda's help after receiving threatening letters. Feluda advises him to stay cautious, but soon after, Mahitosh mysteriously disappears. Later, the theatre's leading actor, **Nepal Lahiri**, is found murdered in an alley, stabbed in the chest.

Feluda takes on the case and begins investigating. Through his sharp observation and deductive skills, Feluda uncovers that the new actor, **Sudhendu Chakraborty**, is actually Mahitosh Roy in disguise. Mahitosh had intentionally gone missing, grown a beard, and changed his appearance to orchestrate Nepal Lahiri's murder. His motive was to eliminate Nepal and take over his position as the leading actor at the Apsara Theatre.

Feluda identifies Mahitosh by his unique habit of consuming tobacco powder, a detail that ultimately exposes his true identity. The story is a brilliant example of Feluda's keen eye for detail and his ability to solve even the most perplexing cases.

Feluda was originally written by Satyajit Ray for the children’s magazine ‘Sandesh’. The popularity of the series was such that Ray went on to include a few adult themes in the later stories when he realized that even adults were enjoying the series.
I actually read Feluda before Agatha Christie and as such Feluda was my introduction to detective fiction. The best part of the stories is the evergreen manner of Ray’s narrative. I remember reading ‘Baadhshahi Angti’ which was written in 1960s and when I visited Lucknow in 1990s, I could still recognize the places described in the book. The other thing that I loved about the series was that in every story we learned something new – be it about geometry or about telepathy.
Absolutely and irrevocably in love with Feluda and his adventures – forever a fan.

অপ্সরা থিয়েটারের নায়ক মহীতোষ রায়কে কেউ হুমকি দিচ্ছে। সে ব্যাপারে ফেলুদার কাছে আসে। কয়েকদিন পর মহীতোষ রায় নিখোজ হয়ে যায়। কোনো খবর পাওয়া যায় না। ৩ মাস পর অপ্সরা থিয়েটারের মেইন নায়ক নেপাল লাহড়ি খুন হয়। সবাইকে জিজ্ঞেসাবাদ করে খুনীকে পাওয়া যায়। সুধেন্দুবাবু। আসলে এই সুধেন্দুবাবুই মহীতোষবাবু। মেইন হিরোকে সরিয়ে নিজে মেইন হিরো হওয়ার জন্য এমনটা করে।

এই গল্পটা একটু অন্যরকম। পায়ে চোট পাওয়ায় ফেলুদার বিকল্প হিসেবে সাসপেক্ট দের জেরা সহ যাবতীয় অভিযানে ছিল রহস্য রোমাঞ্চ উপন্যাস লেখক জটায়ু ওরফে লালমোহন গাঙ্গুলী। ভোলাভালা সেই মানুষটাকে স্মার্টনেসের সাথে ফেলুদার জায়গায় দেখতে (*ভাবতে) মন্দ লাগছিল না। যদিও মাথার খেলাটা ফেলুদাই খেলেছেন।আর শেষের চমক টার জন্য স্বভাবতই প্রস্তুত ছিলাম না।

হুমকির চিঠি পেয়ে ফেলুদার কাছে আসেন থিয়েটার অভিনেতা মহীতোষ রায়। সেরকম পাত্তা দেয় না ফেলুদা। তিন দিন পরেই নিখোজ হন মহীতোষবাবু। অগ্যতা তদন্তে নামতে হয় ফেলুদাকে। আমার মনে গল্পের শুরুর দিক পড়েই বেশিরভাগ পাঠক আমার মত ফেলুদার আগেই রহস্যের সমাধান করে ফেলতে পারবেন।

ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরিতে এটাই সবচেয়ে অপ্রিয়। ঘটনা আগেই বোঝা যায় এবং জমজমাটও না।
তবে ফেলুদার চলৎশক্তিরহিত অবস্থাটা যে অভিনয় নয়, এবং সে যে কেস সংশ্লিষ্ট কাজে এটা করছে না সে ব্যাপারটা নতুন লেগেছে।
