Must Love Hockey #1

In My Hockey Era

Rate this book
From New York Times , Wall Street Journal , and USA Today bestselling author, Kendall Ryan, comes a brand new romance!

Lucy Quinn loves hockey. What she doesn't love? The latest PR stunt from her favorite team—a hockey romance book club designed to lure in more female fans. Pandering to so-called "thirsty" fans? It totally cheapens the sport.

The worst part? They've slapped Bennett Wilder—the infuriatingly cocky, annoyingly handsome star forward—on the cover of this PR disaster like he's some kind of book boyfriend. Gross.

So Lucy does what any passionate, totally rational fan would do—she starts a boycott.

Bennett doesn't love being the face of a book club, but, hey, it's harmless fun . . . until he finds out some feisty, foul-mouthed superfan is trashing it, he's intrigued. And maybe just a little bit turned on.

So, naturally, he makes it his mission to shut her up—with charm, persistence, and exceptionally skilled hands. And somehow, he always manages to make her forget why she was mad.

But as their very public rivalry turns into something much deeper, Lucy realizes one terrifying truth—she might just be falling for the one guy she swore to hate.

ugh DNF at 69% - I wanted to like this one, the premise sounded fun, but it was shallow and immature. The fmc was the worst, her whole personality boiled down to how she's not like other girls because she had brothers and likes sports, hard pass. The whole book is dripping with disdain for more traditionally feminine people and their hobbies, I was annoyed and insulted basically the whole time. Time to call it quits.

I think my favorite part about this story was the sassy spark banter they both had from the very beginning. It felt like when you touch two “live” wires and they “spark”. It’s what kept me going thru the story. That’s not to say that this was otherwise not a good story, because it was a “good” story, but it didn’t have a “wow” factor for me. The romance was a bit slower than I normally like and I honestly think that if it wasn’t for their banter, I might have gotten bored. I mean, I don’t know that for sure, but I get a feeling LOL. With such a strong female character and a male character being a hockey player, there was definitely room for some “chemistry sparks” but overall, it turned out to be more on the sweet side than the sexy side and I just wasn’t expecting it. *shrug* Aside from all that (lol) this WAS a fun and entertaining read with some unexpected emotional moments.

I could have done without the entire “last minute” dramatic shenanigan conflict because I honestly hate when this is done. It was last minute, it didn’t quite add up to me and there was no reason for it other than dramatic effect and that’s just *sigh* … not good.

I enjoy hockey romance, but I’m not head over heels in love with it. Because most books have the same tropes, I like when a book brings something different to the genre. Unfortunately, this didn’t do that. Starting this book, I absolutely loved the idea of a hockey player starting a hockey romance book club. The idea was cute, but the author only uses the book club plot to get the main character together and at the end to try to bookend it. There is no real information, and they only really attend a book club talk once.

This book started to lose me around the 60% mark. Lucy is still kind of playing hard to get, saying they’re not dating (which is fine). But I was really bothered by the “he has options” line. Like, her best friend said that, then her brother said the exact same thing. It’s clear what the author is trying to say. “You better lock him down because he can have whoever he wants.” “Even though he wants you, he’s probably with other girls too”. That mainly bothered me because we (the readers and Lucy) see he’s not that kind of guy, and it’s like her friends and family are trying to use a scare tactic to get Lucy to date him. And don’t get me started with how the characters contradict themselves over and over.

Side note: the dialogue is terrible. I was either cringing or rolling my eyes every few paragraphs.

I honestly don’t hate the third act breakup scenes that so many books have. I do tend to like them less when they are over nothing. Big Spoiler- Mr. hockey star was MARRIED!! No, not in the book, and not while he was pursuing Lucy. So please tell me why she started freaking out about him having an ex-wife. Who is obviously not in his life anymore. The author just wanted to give the FMC a reason to run away or to be upset with him, and I personally thought this wasn’t thought out very well.

Ugh, I’m complaining so much, but overall I did kind of like the book (well, I liked the concept of the book). The idea was great, some of the book was good, overall maybe this just isn’t for me. It was fine, but there were way too many things I wanted to change to actually give it a higher rating. I would not recommend this book to anyone, and I feel like there’s nothing different or great about this book.

There’s nothing Lucy loves more than hockey. And when I say she loves it, I mean she’s a die-hard fan. So when her favorite team pulls the ultimate PR stunt, she’s beyond frustrated. To make matters worse, the infuriating—and annoyingly handsome—star forward, Bennett Wilder, happens to be the face of this disaster. Bennett’s not exactly thrilled with the idea either, but it seems like harmless fun… until he discovers a feisty superfan trashing it. Intrigued, he makes it his mission to shut her up. What could possibly go wrong?

In My Hockey Era was such a fun read! Lucy and Bennett were a riot together. I adored Lucy’s dedication to her job and her unapologetic hockey superfan energy-nothing got past her. And when Bennett entered the mix? All bets were off. Their chemistry was off-the-charts, their banter entertaining, and neither was afraid to throw a few punches. Enemies-to-lovers at its finest!

This book was fun, entertaining, and the perfect read to get lost in for the weekend. I couldn’t put it down.

*Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read and review this title.*

if you used this as the baseline for hockey romances, it's no wonder the heroine thinks that hockey romance books are stupid and make it seem like female hockey fans don't know anything about hockey

3 stars. Mainlined this one because I loved the premise of a sports podcaster and a hockey player getting together to run a book club about hockey romance. It's so meta I can't. The banter was spot on from the beginning: Lucy is really sassy and really prickly, and as the book goes on, we understand why it's so hard for her to take anything deeper than the surface. Meanwhile, Bennett just seems surprised to find that he's having feelings that are not just ones of lust. The way they take care of each other was great and comforting. Unfortunately, I feel like the one criticism Lucy had about hockey romance - that they never focus or understand the hockey - was the exact criticism I had for this book. Seriously, Bennett was so damn available! I felt like we got maybe two scenes of actual hockey, a few of him travelling, and then the rest was just him being there for Lucy all the damn time. It doesn't seem realistic to me, and neither did his obsession with her, the book club, and being everywhere she was. I also got really annoyed by the manufactured conflict at 74% through the book - it was not even a real issue, and thank goodness it got resolved quickly. But still - it was not necessary. Overall, the characters are charming, so this gets a solid 3 stars. A borrow, definitely not a buy.

A wonderful love story from start to finish. The hockey player and the podcaster. It worked so well. Not quite an enemies to lovers romance, more a skeptical non believer to lovers romance. Very much a hockey romance (although Lucy would never agree with that), and definitely a super slow burn, sweet, and at times a little emotional romance. Lucy definitely wasn’t the mushy romantic type, and that’s what got Bennett’s attention. He actually like that about her. The banter between them both was super fun and highly entertaining. A light, easy read. I loved it. I received an advanced copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed by this. The characters have no chemistry, the story was boring and cheesy. However, I know others really loved this book so if you are a fan of Kendall Ryan, I would not hesitate to read it for yourself and see what you think as I seem to be the minority about this.

Thank you Libro.fm Audiobooks for an ALC of this book, in exchange for my honest opinion.

I just finished listening to Kendall Ryan’s 𝐈𝐧 𝐌𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐄𝐫𝐚 and boy do I have a toothache because that book was so sweet! I think I may need to see a dentist soon! LOL!

So, in this book, we have Lucy who is a big hockey fan, and she works in emergency medicine. When she is not at work, Lucy is on her podcast talking about all things hockey. She loves the sport, the players, and the fans. But there is just one thing that irks her nerves…Bennett Wilder and his so-called romance book club. Lucy is convinced that this new romance book club that the team is promoting is all for show, it’s a PR stunt! She is not buying it for a second! Hockey players are not sappy, hopeless romantics and Lucy is determined to do all she can to prove that this is all a farce! Well, that is until she meets Bennett in person. Cue the fireworks and the heart eyes because these two enemies may just end up becoming lovers!

Like I said before, this story was short, sweet, fun, and oh so cute. I loved how Bennett fell hard for Lucy and how she could not escape his charm. I thought that Lucy and Bennett had really great chemistry and though they do get a little hot and heavy, their friendship, the way they were able to talk to and be vulnerable with each other, is what stole my heart as a reader. This was an all-around great read that I would recommend to all lovers of hockey romance!

𝔸𝕦𝕕𝕚𝕠𝕓𝕠𝕠𝕜: I would like to thank LibroFM for the #gifted copy of the audiobook. The narrators were fun, they kept me engaged, and really brought the story to life, making this book such an enjoyable read. The characters’ chemistry, which was one of my favorite aspects of the story, was excellently represented in the narration, and made for a good listening experience. The narrators did a really great job with this one!

ALC Review: In My Hockey Era by Kendall Ryan

“I’ve read a lot of books, but she’s my favorite plot twist. I didn’t see her coming, but now I can imagine the story without her.”

🏒Lucy has been a diehard hockey fan from the very beginning, so when Bennett Wilder—the hot, golden-retriever-energy hockey star—starts a book club to bring in more fans as a PR stunt their worlds collide in the best way. Lucy isn’t just a hockey enthusiast; she’s also a paramedic, podcaster, and animal shelter volunteer (plus she has the cutest dog, Max 🐾).

🏒 The banter between Lucy and Bennett is absolutely off the charts. What I loved most was how in a way they built a friendship first before things turned romantic. Even though some descriptions hint at an enemies-to-lovers vibe, I wouldn’t really classify it that way—it felt more like slow-burn, close proximity with tons of flirty back-and-forth.

🏒 Bennett completely stole my heart. He’s sweet, considerate, and straightforward when it comes to love—no games, just pure charm. His bond with his sister made me adore him even more. Lucy, on the other hand, is a little stubborn but it made the dynamic fun.

🏒 There is a third-act conflict, but I found it a little silly given the circumstances. Still, the story was so cute and binge-worthy, and the epilogue absolutely made my heart burst.

🏒 I listened to the audiobook, and Savannah Peachwood and J.F. Harding did a fantastic job bringing Lucy and Bennett to life with dual POV narration.

🏒 Overall, this hockey romance with a fun book-club twist is a perfect rec for fans of sweet, banter-filled love stories with a golden retriever hero. If you love hockey romances, you’ll definitely want to add this one to your TBR!

Thank you @netgalley and @dreamscape_media for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

FUN FACT: Kendall Ryan books inducted me into the wonderful world of Sports Romance!

I am so glad to be back and reading something from my OG author for hockey romances, and gosh, it still gives me all the feels!

Lucy Quinn is a hockey girlie down to her bones. She grew up loving the game, lives and breathes the Stampede, and somehow still finds time between chaotic paramedic shifts to run a podcast where she passionately breaks down plays, players, and everything hockey. So when her beloved team launches a PR stunt built around a hockey romance book club, she’s instantly outraged. To her, it feels cheap, pandering, and wildly out of touch with what real fans care about. And the final insult was plastering cocky, charming, annoyingly attractive star forward Bennett Wilder front and center like he’s the sport’s new “book boyfriend.”

What I loved about this book is how deeply personal Lucy’s reactions felt. Her frustration wasn’t just about a marketing move; it was rooted in her genuine love for the game and her fear of seeing it trivialized. She’s passionate to a fault, fiery, opinionated, and hilariously stubborn. Her internal tug-of-war made her incredibly relatable. And Bennett? He’s everything she should hate: charismatic, cheeky, too confident by half… yet somehow, impossibly, you can’t help but adore him right along with her. The moment he discovers Lucy is the anonymous superfan dragging him online, and decides to charm her into submission, is when the spark truly hits the page. Their banter is electric, their tension delicious, and their chemistry walks that perfect line between infuriating and irresistible.

As their rivalry becomes something far more tender and complicated, the story does an amazing job of balancing humor, heart, and heat. Lucy’s strong feelings about the PR stunt evolve beautifully as she gets to know the man behind the persona, and watching Bennett dismantle her defenses, and occasionally her arguments, was pure joy.

This book is fun, flirty, and full of heart, with just the right amount of emotional depth behind the comedic setup. If you love sports romance with sharp banter, big feelings, and a heroine who refuses to be sidelined, this one absolutely delivers.

In My Hockey Era by Kendall Ryan
4 stars
Spice: 🔥🔥 /5

This was way cuter than I anticipated. I knew going into this book how predictable the trope was and what was going to happen. What I did not anticipate was how much I was going to like it, despite knowing the sequence of events.

Their dynamic was fun, driven, and full of sexual tension. Was some of the writing a bit more “talkative” than shown? Yes. What do I mean by that? I don’t want to be told the banter “was easy” - I want to be shown through dialogue. Which she did do as well but kept commenting on their easy back and forth, etc. Their interactions were what I did live for through this book. The budding friendship and the slow burn. The real-life hockey romance trope coming to life.

I will admit that I am a bit of a snob when it comes to sports romances because one of my favorite authors, Kandi Steiner, has me hooked on her hockey romance series. However, Kendall Ryan did a fabulous job. Especially incorporating a small amount of the book world into a sports romance book. I felt like she did it organically as well.

This was packed to the brim with tropes. Enemy to lovers, sports romance, slow burn, and one bed scenarios. Bennet and Lucy, sigh. I will admit that I was hesitant to read this after I saw the cover (don’t hate me – it is not my favorite) but I adored this book. I had a hard time putting it down and that’s a good book to me!

Even though I have Kendall Ryan on my tbr for a while now, I somehow never came around reading one of her books. So In My Hockey Era was my first one by her and I had a great time reading it.

The blurb sounds super intriguing. I fell in love with the idea of a hockey club starting a hockey romance book club. Having a hockey player and a fan moderating it. That's just perfect.
But sadly IMO this book didn't reach its full potential. The book club itself fell short right from the beginning. And I had a lot of questions regarding Lucy's status as longtime fan and her podcast. Some things just didn't add up and there were lots of situations where I was wondering why she didn't know stuff, if she's such a die hard fan.

However, Bennett and Lucy have great chemistry and their dynamic carried me through the book.
In the end I loved it just fine and wished it would have lived up to its potential.

Thank you to Dreamscape Media & NetGalley for an ALC of this book, in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was such a fun Sports Romance that merged hockey with hockey romance books, and I loved it so much! Lucy & Bennet had natural chemistry from the moment they connected, and it was so fun seeing them go from sort of enemies to falling for each other. Their relationship felt like it grew very naturally, and they were just the cutest puppy, and don’t even get me started on the dogs 🥹 And that epilogue was just the sweetest!

If you’re looking for a fun new hockey romance you will love this one! I listened to the audiobook which was dual narration, and dual POV and the narrators did a great job bringing the story to life.

Absolutely DEVOURED this hockey romcom involving Lucy, a jaded first responder sports podcaster and Bennett, the big shot hockey player who starts a hockey romance book club. Skeptical that the hockey romance book club is just a big PR stunt, Lucy goes on her podcast to call the team that she loves (and Bennett Wilder in particular) as doing this all for publicity.

In a twist she didn't see coming the team's PR person reaches out and invites Lucy to join the book club so she can report on just how not fake it is. What follows is forced proximity, enemies to lovers, he falls first, only one bed greatness and I was so here for it!!

Excellent on audio narrated by J.F. Harding and Savannah Peachwood and highly recommended for fans of books like Karen Booth's Not so fast and authors like Tessa Bailey and Elle Kennedy! My only complaint was that it ended sooner than I would have liked. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!

This was a fun kickoff to a new hockey romance. Lucy is a die hard hockey fan with her own podcast and was fuming that hockey romance book club is formed and Bennet is the host to draw in fans. Her podcast goes viral and the team invites her to the bookclub.

I really liked Bennett abs how sweet he is and giving things a try. Lucy was a little harder to love - she is so stubborn. I thought it was odd how much she disliked him despite him being a star player. And she was star struck by other players.

The story is cute and they do have great chemistry. Savannah Peachwood and J.F. Harding did a great job on the narration.

i randomly saw this on ku and the concept was extremely intriguing (as a hockey fan who is fascinated by fandom culture and booktok in hockey.. like the seattle kraken disaster lol). it wasn't executed as good as i would have liked though? the writing just felt a bit.. flat? like i couldn't really get invested in either characters.. lucy erred a bit on 'not like other girls' at times.. but it was a really quick (like.. insanely quick?) and easy read and there was some cute moments!!! shame that the cover appears to be ai though.

Hockey fan & paramedic Lucy Quinn gets upset when her hometown hockey team’s PR decides to run a hockey romance book club with their center, Bennett Wilder to entice book lovers to the sport. Lucy tried to start a boycott so Bennett tries to persuade this feisty fan to see it from his side. Can this hockey hottie win over Lucy? This is a fun and quirky romcom with a charming hockey player and one strong headed lady. A really cute romance. Told in first person and dual POV.

What to expect

EMT x Hockey player
Opposites attract
Slow burn
Dislike to love
Book club
Cute dogs
So much banter
Deep connection

I really enjoyed this book. The banter throughout made me laugh so much. Most of the story is lighthearted which I liked. Sometimes I don’t want a book that is going to rip me to shreds, especially when real life is difficult.

The book focused mainly on the MMCs without having too many side characters for which I was grateful. I liked both their best friends and am excited for Chase’s book coming up next.

I recommend reading this book and am excited to read more in the future series.

This was a super cute hockey romance. Quick listen and left me smiling.

Bennett and Lucy had all the banter but they definitely had an insta-chemistry about them.

JF Harding and Savannah Peachwood were amazing narrators as always. So the audiobook performance definitely heightened my enjoyment overall.

This was my first book from this author but it won’t be my last.

Recommend the audiobook if you want a sweet romance to make you smile.

A quintessential Kendall Ryan read.

Book 1 in the new 'Must Love Hockey' series, 'In My Hockey Era' follows paramedic Lucy Quinn, who in her spare time runs a podcast on her beloved hockey team. And when said team pulls a PR stunt that she disagrees with, Lucy is more than vocal. Enter Bennett Wilder, and sparks fly.

This was a super fun read for me. I love a good sports romance and a bunch of fluff, and this book ticked all those boxes. The build up of Lucy and Bennetts relationship was believable without being too drawn out, and their slide from rivals to friends to more was fun to watch. I refuse to refer to this as enemies to lovers though, as it's quite clear from the outset that there's nothing much 'enemies' between them, but rather just a simple butting of heads at first - and even that's pretty one sided on Lucy's part.

If you're in the mood for a fluffy sports romance with likable MC's with valid flaws that make you root for them all the more, then this is the perfect read for you. I started this on holiday and it was the perfect beach read for me.

Thanks to Kendall Ryan for the ARC - ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Cute read ~ predictable and a little cliche, sure, but it was a good little palette cleanser between heavier books.

The narrators weren’t bad, except for some mispronunciation of simple words, like “rifle.” (AKA, “rifling” through my closet). Why are we mispronouncing that?
