A couple weeks ago, my wife and I took a camping trip in southern Ohio while our kids were at summer camp. One day, we visited beautiful downtown Chillicothe and Wheatberry Books, a delightful independent bookstore. Facing out from one of the shelves was a book that caught my eye, and kept pulling me back: Sustainable Self-Employment: Taking the Leap by John MacAdam.

First, let's talk about what this book is and is not. It could NOT have been called "Five easy steps to financial freedom and being your own boss." It could NOT have been called "The Four-Hour Workweek." Because this is not a book about shortcuts, and it's certainly not a book selling "be your own boss" as an easy answer to the question of how one should make a living.

Instead, this book is a tightly-focused and practical guide to transition to self-employment by way of growing a side hustle. While the book draws liberally on MacAdam's own experience taking exactly this journey, it is less memoir than how-to guide, and includes not only his own experiences but examples drawn from others who have made similar transitions in other fields, such as graphic design and consulting. Macadam was an engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation and a software developer. While I couldn't help but feel like MacAdam's advice was most directly applicable to tech professionals like myself and like him, it is certainly not that narrowly focused. That said, I suspect that this book will be extremely applicable to those of us in certain fields and adaptable by others, but at the same time certain fields may not lend themselves well to this approach, or to self-employment in general.

Ultimately, the book as a whole--and each chapter--offers important skills to develop and disciplines to cultivate (helpfully reiterated at the end of each chapter and the end of the book, along with thoughtful questions for the reader to consider to apply these ideas to their own situation). Although this book draws heavily on his own experience, MacAdam adeptly synthesizes ideas from other writers such as Cal Newport and James Clear, Seth Godin and Morgan Housel, Paul Jarvis, Alan Weiss, and others. He carefully sequences the practices and areas of growth to first support a successful career as an employee, gradually develop a profitable side hustle, and ultimately transition to independence.

In one sense, I am NOT the target audience for this book. I was not previously contemplating self-employment, and if anything MacAdam's book has convinced me that I am not willing to put in all the work that would be needed to get there. Nonetheless, I feel like Sustainable Self-Employment is a book that has gems of wisdom for people in many different situations. First, there are disciplines and skills that can benefit all of us who are salaried employees: ways to be more efficient and effective, ways to make ourselves more valuable to our company and help us grow our careers. I also came to see how a side hustle might work, not just as an eventual launch pad for self-employment, but also as a laboratory for developing both technical and non-technical skills, to continue growing in ways that may not be available in my current role.

So, while this book is primarily a guide for those who want to become self-employed, I would maintain that just about everyone could learn from this book. Not only are there lessons to be learned, but MacAdam writes about his story and his topic in a way that's accessible, engaging, and interesting in its own right. It's valuable for anyone to reflect on how they approach their professional life and grow their career. I'm glad that I took the leap to buy this book that caught my eye in a cute little bookstore while I was on vacation.

An American dream handbook, not just for solopreneurs, the lessons and learnings can be applied to any role in business. My favorite quotes in the book are John's "Relationships are better bridged than broken" and Seneca's "We suffer more often in imagination than in reality."
