Returned from the wilds of Germania and the fresh grief of his brother’s loss, Rufinus finds that in the emperor’s absence, crime and treachery have taken hold in Rome, and even his wife has fled to the countryside for her safety.
Armed only with a sword, a faithful hound, and a small group of trusted friends, Rufinus re-enters the Praetorian fortress to investigate the crimes reported by his wife, and to confront their perpetrators. Little does he know how deep the rot goes, and how much peril he will face.
But more even than that. This crimewave is of a scale unprecedented, threatening not only Rome, but the whole of Italy, the empire beyond, and even the throne itself. Can Rufinus identify and bring to justice the man behind it all before the emperor returns?
What a story! I really could not put it down, it starts with a simple investigation and continues at lightening speed building to an incredible crescendo, Simon Turney just gets better and better, I can't wait for the next book in the series, and the next book of The Riders.
The best book in the Praetorian series so far, and certainly one of Turney's best. The story was engaging and the characters were well developed. The yarn kept guessing pretty much through the whole book. I truly enjoyed reading this book, in fact, I put two other books that I was reading on the back burner to concentrate on Bandit King.
One of the deepest regrets of reading a many volume series such as this is that you fail in love with the characters, I positively fell for Senovia and her Praetorian. The stories were all exceptionly well written and drew you into the excitement of the action and the historical fact involved in these sagas.
