When former Nashville police detective Summer Walsh visits her favorite B&B in Charleston, South Carolina, during the Christmas Holidays, she discovers the innkeeper's dead body. What she'd hoped would be a relaxing holiday between jobs turns into a stressful and often frustrating experience with another innkeeper who didn't like the victim, a man who toys with elderly women's emotions, an ex-con who will do anything for money, and a very disloyal housekeeper.
I was looking for a quick and easy holiday “whodunit” read which would keep my interest for a few hours….and I found it in Murder Under the Mistletoe! The cast of characters is eclectic….and kept me intrigued (and at times laughing) as I read this novella.
Summer Walsh gets to stay in a B&B booked by her parents (one of their favourites as a matter of fact) in Charleston, South Carolina during the Christmas holiday season. Summer is hoping that a mini vacation will help her decide what career to explore next. As a burnt out ex-cop, she has had a myriad of jobs, the most recent at a retail outlet…but when the manager asked for “all hands on deck” an hour and a half before opening the next morning with little notice that was the last straw for Summer and she quit on the spot.
Upon Summer’s arrival in Charleston she discovers the owner (and friend of the family) of the B&B dead. To extricate herself from being on the list of possible suspects, Summer becomes involved in the investigation. There are certainly some “interesting” characters (Mavis and Bert to name a few) and enough misdirection to keep you guessing. And what about the “sparks” between Summer and Jim (the active police officer involved in the murder investigation)…hmmmm.
This short read was a great beginning to the series. I can’t wait to read Gun in the Garden and Offed in the Office – the other two books in the series.

This cozy mystery shows us Summer Walsh. She used to be a police officer but quit when it became too much for her. Since then she had a lot of other jobs but none were the right fit for her. Her parents had booked a vacation at a B & B but couldn't go so they offered it to Summer. She gladly accepted and headed off on her vacation. But once she got there she found the owner murdered. While the police worked on solving the crime she tried to stay out of the investigation but it was too hard for her.
There's a good plot, with some interesting twists, to this mystery and well developed characters making it an interesting read. There are lots of suspects to the murder but we don't know who dunnit until the last minute. That's what I like in a mystery.
Career flip-flopping makes Summer believable & likeable. With no family tying her down, she's trying to find her place in the world. It seems obvious to everybody except Summer that her destiny is to be a policewoman. She respectfully stays with the confines of the law, allowing the active Officer to do things legally. For a Cozy Mystery, there are certainly a lot of twists & possibilities for the criminal. Debby Mayne does a fabulous job of developing each character enough for readers to draw an opinion without dwelling too long.
For her debut of the series, 'Mistletoe' is a good, solid read for the season. I give it 4 stars.
Summer Walsh is having trouble finding her way in life. She gave up being a police detective in Nashville. She has gone through a series of jobs trying to find one that fit. Having just quit her lastill-fitting job, her parents ofer her a trip to a Charleston, SC bed and breakfast for Christmas. But upon arriving, she finds the B and B owner dead. Now, Summer is caught up in the investigation.
This is a fun, quick cozy mystery. Summer and the other characters are interesting. The mystery is solid enough with plenty of misdirection. While set at Christmas, it doesn't have a strong holiday feel though.
Cute cozy Christmas mystery. Summer is an ex-cop and hasn't been able to find a job where she feels comfortable and fulfilled. Her parents have her take their stay at a B&B and everything you can imagine breaks out. It's a cute short story. I was given this book in exchange for my honest review.
The ins and outs, ups and downs, and quirkiness of this short story make it a fun and quick read. Just right. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
