Unravel Ten of the New York's Most Interesting Murder Mysteries.
David Bushman's and Mark Givens' engaging retellings take readers through the history of the crimes and the personal anecdotes of family and friends who were impacted by the deaths. Breakdowns of the crime scenes, timelines of the victims and the suspects, and various clues give readers a personal guide to the unsolved murders that have rocked New York.
I received a free copy of, New York's Coldest Cases, by David Bushman; Mark T. Givens, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Its sad that there are so many crimes, murders, that are unsolved, that become cold cases. This book has ten such cases in New York. This was an interesting read.
I am honoured to have the opportunity to receive an arc of this book in return of an honest review.
The book is so well researched and informative, I couldn’t put it down. I haven’t heard of some of these so was very interesting to learn and read about them.
*Thank you to Globe Pequot for a complimentary arc of New York’s Coldest Cases. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Bushman & Givens made me start out 2026 wondering how I haven’t read any of their collaborative work before. New York’s Coldest Cases is a compilation of ten cold cases, written to give fresh perspectives on almost forgotten tragedies - and delivering it perfectly.
Most of the cases the author duo dive into in this book, I had heard nothing about previously, and several of them were so interesting that I genuinely cannot believe I didn't know about them. The accounts of the cold cases are so well researched and put together that it gives you in-depth insight into cases that went ice cold a century ago, and the reconstruction the authors bring the cases make the book stand out. Giving you the facts and the evidence, while providing a balance between investigative detail and historical context, you also get theories from professionals as to what might’ve happened. However, the author duo managed to write this in such a way that allows you to immerse yourself enough into these cases that it gives you room to potentially form your own ideas and thoughts into what might be the solutions to the mysteries.
New York’s Coldest Cases is an absolute must-read for true crime aficionados, and a great addition to the genre.
New Yorks Coldest Cases by David Bushman offers a gripping well researched journey into 10 of New York's most intriguing unsolved murder mysteries making it a must read for true crime aficionados. Bushman and his co-author Mark Givens, balance historical context and investigative detail, bringing to life the lifelong impact these crimes have had on the victims families and their communities. The strength of this book lies in its storytelling. Each case is meticulously reconstructed using the available evidence, personal accounts, and interviews, allowing us, the readers, to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of suspense and mystery that surround each of these unsolved murders. Because the authors do not shy away from the human side of these tragedies, it brings the reader deeper into each narrative, highlighting anecdotes and memories from those close to the victims adding depth and emotion to the stories. I loved the vast array of cases, spanning different eras and neighborhoods in New York. It helps to underscore the city's complex history with crime. Especially the lesser publicized cases. Offering fresh perspectives on almost forgotten stories. I feel this book is a strong addition to this genre. Thank you #Netgalley for this ARC.

Overview: There has been a surge in the popularity of true crime shows and books, particularly cold cases. Shows like "Bloodline Detectives", "Cold Justice", and even "Cold Case Files" bring constant views to their host channels. People like to see if old cases have been solved. But what happens when the cases are so cold that solving them is more for legendary status than seeing someone pay for the crime? This book contains ten cases from New York; cases that will probably never be solved due mainly to the age of the cases. What will we see in these files? Let's find out.
Dislikes: There's a phrase: "politics ruins everything". And many of these cases prove that saying. If the politicians weren't interfering in the cases, then the media was chumming the waters if you will. How did the media avoid libel claims then?
Likes: We got a lot of background on the cases.
Some cases even had a few theories on what might have happened.
We also got photos and diagrams, when applicable, for each case that was shown.
Conclusion: This was a fascinating book. If you are a fan of true crime tales, then this book is for you. Enjoy the read.
This book intrigued me, I've lived in NYS all my life, but a long way from the city. One of the stories took place in an area that I'm familiar with, North Greenbush, a bit different with all the farm land! This book highlights with a lot of detail, and unfortunately, no real arrests. Except one case, where to suspect admits guilt, but in the end was justice served? There are many cases mentioned here, some victims just disappear off the face of the earth, never to be seen again, and others are seen deceased but again there really isn't any justice. I know that all of these cases happened before all forencics that are available today, DNA. But, personally I live in a rural, farm land part of NY and know of at least 3 unsolved murders. I loved all the information that the authors provided, and the conclusions that were made. Justice sure wasn't served! Not that some of the victims, well, I'll just say that in some cases justice was served. I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Globe Pequot, and was not required to give a positive review.
I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review. This book focuses on cold case murders that took place in New York. I found this book so interesting, I couldn't put it down. There are a lot of books out there that focus on really high profile cases, there was only a couple of cases that I'd even heard about in this book and being cold cases this led you to really think about what you believe happened in each case. As each chapter was one whole case story so could sometimes be a little long, I really liked the subheadings because they helped to break each chapter up a little and the pictures really got my interest. Overall I found this a very quick and interesting read.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ David Bushman's and Mark Givens' engaging retellings take readers through the history of the crimes and the personal anecdotes of family and friends who were impacted by the deaths. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC copy. This book was really interesting to read. I kept wondering to myself, if they had the technology that we have today, would the cases still have gone cold? Especially when looking into such major cases like the 1940 World Fair Bombing. I loved the detail that you get on each case and how immersive the read was, especially with all the personal accounts and pictures provided
If you’re very interested in old true crime cases that you may never have heard of before and have lay cold and unsolved for decades and surrounded in mystery, then this is the perfect book! This book has gripping mysteries from old time New York that will have you perplexed. For me, this was a great read and I’m thankful that I was given the opportunity by NetGalley for an honest review. There’s just something about the coldest cases, some more than a century old that has you deeply interested in how these people managed to go so long without being detected and possibly how hard it will be to ever find out the truth.
This is a fascinating and incredibly well researched collection of true crime cases from New York! As a former writer and researcher of true crime cases, many of these cases I had never heard of before and are some of the coldest cases I had ever read about. It makes me want to get back into researching true crime and help solve cases such as these. This is a must read for any true crime enthusiast!
I received this ARC book complimentary from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I am grateful to have received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This was an enjoyable book. It was full of information and details about each case, and I really appreciated the history. It did feel a little dry and flat for my taste, however. I would have appreciated a bit more energy in the writing in some way, as opposed to it reading much like a report. Nonetheless, I think we can expect that from this genre as well, and the cases were very interesting.
New York's Coldest Cases by David Bushman and Mark T. Givens is about Ten Unsolved murders that rocked the Empire State.
Both authors presented these cases in a well researched way, without giving their own opinions on the cases but rather laying out all the facts and letting the readers decide. Some of these cases I have heard of before and some I have not. Either way I appreciated the addition of photos and other details that they included.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Globe Pequot in exchange for my honest opinion and review. #NewYorksColdestCases #NetGalley
Wow, I don't think I have ever heard of any of these cases which is refreshing. There was so much information thrown into this book. I wish some of these crimes could be solved after all of this information has been shared. This book was written in a strange way, not sure if it was just the formatting sent or if the authors planned for certain letters to be capitalized throughout the book, but it was interesting.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The only reason I have only given this 4 stars is because I knew a lot about a few of these cases. This is not reflective of the authors ability, as the writing was superb, it was just prior knowledge. It is a sad and cruel world we live in, and it’s crazy to think how many unsolved cases there are.
Review of advance copy received from Netgalley ************************************* Very well written and researched; a fascinating macabre history of a beloved city/state. The victims lives are respected and their relationships valued, which makes the impact of their tragedy ever more devastating. Anyone who is easily squeamish about crime scene details may not have an easy time with this book. Overall, great work from both authors.
