An unsettling investigation teaches two deeply suspicious people how to trust in the next thrilling novel of the Lost Night Files trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz.
Amelia Rivers, a member of the Lost Night Files podcast team, hires private investigator Gideon Sweetwater to catch the stalker who has been watching her. Amelia suspects the stalker may be connected to the shadowy organization responsible for the night that she and her two friends lost to amnesia - a night that upended their lives and left them with paranormal talents.
Gideon suspects that Amelia is either paranoid or an outright con artist, but he can't resist the chemistry between them. He takes the case despite his skepticism. For her part, Amelia has second thoughts about the wisdom of employing the mysterious Mr. Sweetwater. She is wary of the powerful attraction between them, and deeply uneasy about the nightmarish paintings on the walls of his home. She senses they were inspired by his own dreamscapes.
Amelia knows she doesn't have time to find another investigator, and Gideon is forced to reckon with the truth when he disrupts what was intended to be Amelia's kidnapping. Now the pair is on the run, with no choice but to return to the haunting ruins of the old hotel where Amelia's lost night occurred. They are desperate to stop a killer and the people who are conducting illegal experiments with a dangerous drug that is designed to enhance psychic abilities. If they are to survive, they will have to trust each other and the passion that bonds them.
The author of over 50 consecutive New York Times bestsellers, JAYNE ANN KRENTZ writes romantic-suspense in three different worlds: Contemporary (as Jayne Ann Krentz), historical (as Amanda Quick) and futuristic (as Jayne Castle). There are over 30 million copies of her books in print.
She earned a B.A. in History from the University of California at Santa Cruz and went on to obtain a Masters degree in Library Science from San Jose State University in California. Before she began writing full time she worked as a librarian in both academic and corporate libraries.
Shattering Dawn concludes The Lost Night Files trilogy. However you categorize it, urban fantasy, paranormal romantic suspense, or private investigation with a paranormal twist, this one has it all. Thrills, chills, action, suspicion, and an unsettling investigation rapidly pull readers into the story line.
Amelia Rivers is a member of the Lost Night Files podcast team. She hires private investigator Gideon Sweetwater to catch the person who has been stalking her. Amelia suspects the stalker may be connected to the organization responsible for the night she and her two friends lost to amnesia. That night changed their lives and left them with paranormal talents. Gideon isn’t sure if Amelia is a paranoid or a con artist, but he takes the case despite his skepticism. Both are wary of the chemistry between them and unsure of the other. However, when someone attempts to kidnap Amelia, they must learn to trust each other.
Amelia isn’t an overachiever like the rest of her family. She barely getting by doing photography. However, she has determination, is somewhat lonely, and is subject to anxiety attacks. Additionally, she tends to be afraid of the dark and her new paranormal talent works best at night. Gideon is lonely, curious, focused, and has good intuition. He also has trouble sleeping. Both characters have depth and are dynamic.
The novel is set in contemporary times and mainly in San Diego, California with some scenes in Lucent Springs in the desert two hours away. It’s a riveting story with protagonists that I liked and cheered on as they investigated who was stalking Amelia and how or if it relates to the night she can’t remember.
This story captivated me in the first chapter and gained momentum as the twists and turns unfolded. It’s also well-plotted with characters that had flaws, but who worked to overcome them. There are some surprising moments in the plot that added to enjoyment and the world-building is well-done. Full of action, investigation, paranormal experiences, and more, this book was hard to put down. My main quibble was that the romance part happened rather quickly. Other threads woven into the story include focus, control, trust, lack of trust, and much more.
Overall, it was suspenseful, full of danger, and action-packed. This story comes to a satisfying conclusion. However, I can see where a spin-off series or trilogy could go and hope that it happens. If you enjoy thrilling paranormal romantic suspense novels or urban fantasy, then I recommend you check out this trilogy.
Berkley Publishing Group and Jayne Ann Krentz provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for January 07, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine. --------------------------------------- My 4.23 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
SHATTERING DAWN (The Lost Night Files Book #3) by Jayne Ann Krentz is the final paranormal romantic suspense book in The Lost Night Files trilogy. In this story, the third member of the Lost Night Files podcast members meets her HEA match, and all the dangling plotlines of the trilogy are resolved. While this can be read as a standalone romance, I feel it is much more enjoyable reading the trilogy in order.
Amelia Rivers wonders if she is going mad as her enhanced paranormal powers increase and are not under control. She has difficulty sleeping and has become terrified of the dark since her lost night with her two friends at Lucent Springs. She believes she is being stalked, and it may be tied to her lost night. She hires Private Investigator Gideon Sweetwater. Amelia is not sure if Gideon is right for the job, and Gideon has his own reservations, but he is intrigued. While both need to learn to trust the other, they are also wary of the chemistry between them.
Gideon Sweetwater feels an attraction to Amelia, but is skeptical of her story, until he disrupts a kidnapping at her apartment building. Amelia takes Gideon back to Lucent Springs, outside of San Diego to look for more clues and information, but there are people who will stop at nothing to get their hands on Amelia. What they did not count on was Gideon and his Sweetwater heritage.
Amelia and Gideon are so much fun as the H/h in this book of the trilogy. Amelia does not let the Gideon get away with his alpha tendencies as they learn to trust each other and their paranormal talents. I also enjoyed that Gideon was a Sweetwater and how he was a link between many of the other “Jayneverse” series and trilogies. The romance plot is fast paced with danger at their heels and both their physical and paranormal chemistry is explosive. The story’s suspense plotline is palpable throughout with many twists and surprises. All the intertwining subplots over the entire trilogy are tied together in this book and come together in a satisfying conclusion.
I highly recommend this entertaining and fast paced finale to The Lost Night Files trilogy!
Shattering Dawn by Jayne Ann Krentz The Lost Night Files series #3. Romantic suspense with paranormal elements. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series. Amelia Rivers has a stalker. She hires private investigator Gideon Sweetwater for his reputation though the paintings on his office walls are nightmare inducing. Gideon doesn’t believe Amelia and her friends were drugged or spent the night at the old hotel but he’s forced to reassess when he disrupts a kidnapping attempt. Gideon has his own history that he suspects may be related to Amelia’s experience. Their attraction to each other grows as they investigate and share secrets.
This book wraps up the series and the unanswered threads from the prior books. Good suspense and wonderful romance. The inclusion of a Sweetwater from prior series was like having an old friend come and visit. When they learned from each other about their gifts it was a connection that could be felt. I love the psychic elements. A little bit out there, but the possibilities….
“Trust your intuition. Some things you know are true.”
While the story does conclude on a note that hints to possible continuations of the prevalent mystery, I still did feel that Shattering Dawn was a fitting wrap to the three founding members of the Lost Night Files. It was a solid and believable wrap that convincingly answered many of the unsettling and troubling thoughts that had led Amelia and her peers to the troubling dilemma they had found themselves in, while also tying up nicely some existing loose ends and bringing a sense of closure to their respective futures, as well.
“I told you so.” “Nobody likes an I-told-you-so, Amelia.” “Get used to it.”
Or maybe I was more on a high of how it didn't immediately jump into the romantic sparks. 😆 Okay, well, it was there with a very quick confession that I could have lived without, but I didn't feel like it was the focal point of their relationship. Which was a good thing! 👍🏻 From their first meeting, they were foils to one another in both their abilities and their temperaments; whereas Amelia Rivers is more of a cheery adventurous disposition, despite how her senses are heightened with her psychic ability to sense one's aura, mainly in the dark, private investigator, Gideon Sweetwater is practical, critical, and pragmatic - reluctant to admit to the paranormal workings that Amelia so strongly believes in. 'I trust you, but you don’t trust me.' They played off each other really well - working in tandem and testing each other's patience in an observant, but helpful way that made them feel like quick friends more before tumbling into the bedroom together. 😌
“What if things go horribly wrong?” she said. “Then we will practice until you get it right.”
And for good reason! 🙈 A test of theories to see just how their talents could balance each other off that also made it more engaging - relatively low on steam, but high in flirtatious banter and daring endeavors. Definitely an improvement from the bore of the last installment! 😤 'The attraction was mutual. The thought dazzled.' For reasons unbeknownst to me, Gideon really appealed to me. He did! I was amused by his deadpan snapbacks, his despondent view on his own paranormal ability of being able to kill people with nightmares - one which has severely dampened his relationship status, not to mention sleeping patterns, his decisive but playful way of amping the charm around Amelia during their unsettling investigations that had her fall prey to his charms. 🥺 'You may be strong... but you are not scary. Not to me.' Despite their wary suspicions of each other's personalities and way of thinking, their chemistry was tangible; mysterious Mr. Sweetwater had a way of keeping her on her toes, but still hoping for more.
“She was being hunted. Again. But at least this time she was aware of the danger.”
It was also gratifying to finally fill in the missing pieces that revolved around their kidnapping that left them with no memory whatsoever of a night that changed their lives forever. It was a fast-paced and convincing detective mystery that steadily built up the suspense and tension - from tracking down the killer hunting down anyone involved from that fateful night to a routine drug deal gone bad that pitted them in an even more dangerous situation, but one that they were able to use their capabilities to easily quash the sinister plot from being followed through. 🕵🏻♀️ The shady and creepy vibes of returning to the old hotel - the scene of the crime - was haunting and eerily disturbing and I was gripped to see how the action would play out. Especially concerning the reason why Gideon and Amelia's paths crossed in the first place was not necessarily tied into the Lost Files Investigation! Now that's full circle, for sure. ✨
Liked it and the paranormal detective group they formed. Could have been a touch spicier but the story was complex and the whole zapping each other during sex thing was interesting.
Another awesome book from the Jayne Ann krentz Lost Night Files! Book 3 Shattering Dawn finally put the missing pieces to the series with probably my favorite couple from this series Amelia Rivers and Gideon sweeteater! Both have their share of paranormal talents with Amelia photographic abilities to see auras and Gideon specializing in putting people into nightmare realms they’re a hell of a team. Theirs a great chemistry with slow burn light on steamy scenes but a thrilling ride none the less. I’ve read every book by this writer and I keep coming back because of the atmospheric storytelling with great plots and amazing characters. Until next time Luv’s 💋😉
I liked this series more and more with each book and I’m sad that it was called a trilogy. This one got some answers but left a lot more questions that makes me hope that more books in this time and place are forthcoming. Amelia Rivers is sure that she has a stalker so she goes to a private investigator that she thinks must be more likely to understand the paranormal aspects to her case since he is on the list she and her friends were. It’s clear upon their first meeting she was wrong since he is skeptical about anything paranormal. The two of them begin to investigate and find much more than they were expecting including some answers about who kidnapped Amelia and her friends from the podcast. This book was fun even if the romance wasn’t as compelling as some (although I did love seeing another member of the Sweetwater family.
The Lost Files began when three women, Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March and Amelia Rivers, lost a night at Lucent Springs Hotel. The three were lured there under false pretenses about jobs with the remodel. Three strangers that formed a bond through their lost night and formed the Lost Files Podcast searching for the truth. They soon discovered others had similar stories. Each had gifts that were enhanced after their experience and others went crazy.
This story belongs to Amelia. Amelia isn’t sure how to use her talent that turns the night into a landscape of colors and auras. Photography using old cameras allows her to capture what she experiences. Her intuition tells her someone is stalking her, and she takes steps to capture their aura before contacting Gideon Sweetwater. She believes he can assist her.
I liked sweet Amelia, and the first meeting with Gideon was a curious one. The tale that unfolds takes them back to where it all began at the Lucent Springs Hotel. We learned details as the two formed a relationship that moved beyond mutual appreciation. Gideon is a talent as well, and if you are familiar with Krentz’s works, you will recognize the family name. Gideon has his own issues involving nightmares, and I loved seeing these two work together as a team. Their relationship felt genuine, as did their chemistry.
The author did a wonderful job of building up the suspense, added some twists and keeping me invested until the end. This may or may not be the last book in the series, but I am hoping we see more stories set in this world. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
For all the years that I’ve been reading romance, I’ve never read Jayne Ann Krentz or her alter egos, Jayne Castle and Amanda Quick. But I had the opportunity to see her at my local indie bookstore and was fascinated by her discussion of her writing. I jumped into this, the third book of a trilogy, but didn’t feel confused or like I was missing anything by not having read previous books. The author says she writes romantic suspense (under this name). I would have liked more emphasis on the romance but I still intend to read more of her books.
The Lost Night Files series has been centered on three friends, Amelia, Talia and Pallas, trying to find out what happened seven months earlier when they went to Lucent Springs Hotel, thinking they were being interviewed for a job and ended up waking up the next day with no memory of what happened. Each had minor psychic talents that were enhanced and strengthened after that “lost” night. Since then, they’ve been searching for answers, starting a Podcast to shine light on the event and get answers.
The story opens with Amelia being stalked by someone unknown. With the danger they’ve each faced amplified by their public investigations into that “lost night” Amelia feels it wise to hire a detective/bodyguard to get to the bottom of it. On the surface Gideon Sweetwater sounds skeptical, but he’s got his own talents he’s not eager to share. Then Ameila and Gideon discover an unexpected connection that puts them both in danger.
Shattering Dawn was an action-packed, page-turning mystery! A blend of romantic suspense with paranormal elements and my favorite installment to date! I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and all the answers we got here, wrapping up into a satisfying conclusion of the series!
I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy courtesy of the publisher. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I didn’t read the 1st two books in this series but that was okay. I was able to jump in and enjoy the story. I loved Amelia and Gideon as they navigate their problems, discover their talents, work on a cold case all while falling in love.
I plan to get the 1st two books in the series and see what other shenanigans the Sweetwater family is up to in those books.
Thank you NetGalley for chance to read this ARC. All opinions are my own.
The Lost Night Files, the podcast at the center of this series, began after three women, Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March and Amelia Rivers, all lost a night, together, in the crumbling ruins of the old Lucent Springs Hotel.
They all believed that they were there for a job. Their combined specialties would be ideal for working on the rehabilitation of the formerly grand hotel and spa into a thing of beauty as well as a destination resort.
After being drugged, experimented upon, nearly killed in an out-of-control fire and/or crushed by an earthquake – all in the same night – and then, of course, disbelieved by the local cops, they banded together to give themselves, well, a job. Just an entirely different job than the one they thought they were being interviewed for.
Together, they started the podcast, searching for answers. Over the course of the series, beginning with Sleep No More and continuing with The Night Island, they found some of their answers – as well as other victims of the same nefarious operation – AND a whole hell of a lot more questions. Not to mention links back to the Bluestone Project behind the mysterious events at Fogg Lake that were explored in The Vanishing, All the Colors of Night, and Lightning in a Mirror.
Also, what look like happy ever afters for Pallas (Sleep No More) and Talia (The Night Island).
This time around its Amelia Rivers’ turn – in more ways than one.
It doesn’t take Amelia’s enhanced paranormal senses, courtesy of that mysterious experiment, for her to realize that someone is watching her. But her senses do give her the tools she needs to photograph and possibly even identify her stalker – at least in the paranormal spectrum where her talent manifests.
But Amelia’s talents as a photographer, whether paranormal or mundane, don’t exactly give her the tools she needs to hunt down someone who really is out to get her. (It’s not paranoia if it’s real, and this is very, very real indeed.)
Which is where private investigator Gideon Sweetwater comes in. Or will if Amelia decides she can trust him to be open-minded about her case. Little does Amelia know that Gideon’s mind was opened LONG before Amelia ever walked into his life. Not because he was part of the experiment, but rather because paranormal talents have been part of the Sweetwater family for generations.
And it’s his uncle’s misguided attempt to find more people like their family that started this whole entire mess. And might just end them all.
Escape Rating A-: Welcome to the ‘Jayneverse’ a place where psychic powers and paranormal talents hide in plain sight in some very surprising times and people and places – when they bother to hide at all.
Everything connects up eventually, from the 19th century Arcane Society, where the rationalization of the Industrial Revolution forced those talents underground – and gave rise to some seriously mad scientists – to the 20th and 21st century of this series and its predecessor Fogg Lake where those talents are hidden to keep the talented from being labelled as crackpots – to the far flung future of humanity out in the stars where paranormal talents are not merely accepted by downright required for survival on the lost colony of Harmony.
Howsomever, just because this book, and the trilogy it’s a part of, is part of a much broader tapestry, that does not mean that you can’t dive in right here – because you absolutely can. The links between the individual series and subseries are loose and tangential. If you know what came before – and after – it gives the story just a touch more resonance, but each book gives more than enough hints to pick up what has already happened in ITS subseries. Not that the links to other times and places aren’t irresistible – because they are. Just that you don’t have to know the ins and outs of all of those links to become immersed in the one that you have in your hands at the time.
That being said, Shattering Dawn is the wrap up of The Lost Night Files, and it does work better if you start with Sleep No More so that you’re right there with the fans of the podcast when Amelia needs them to rescue her – not that Gideon isn’t already working on that little problem.
What makes this story, and this series, so much fun is that there are always multiple strings to the author’s bow. So to speak.
The primary story is always the mystery to be solved, and in the case of The Lost Night Files it’s a doozy. Pallas, Talia and now Amelia have been pulling at the threads of that mystery from the very beginning. They know they’re closing in on the truth – and Amelia is certain that the truth is closing in on her as well.
Part of what makes this story such a page turner are the wheels within wheels of that truth. Amelia and her friends are not the only victims in a race to a deadly finish. There are conflicting and hidden motives on all sides, with each party having its own idea of what the endgame should be and who should be permitted to walk away from it.
At the same time, the heartbeat of this story, like the rest of the series, is the burgeoning romance between Amelia and Gideon. They begin by not trusting themselves or each other, and their steps towards even a possible alliance are hesitant and yet still every bit as hot as the power they wield separately – and even more explosively together.
I had a marvelous time reading Shattering Dawn – as I have with all of this author’s work, especially in the Jayneverse. Now that The Lost Night Files have found their answers, I’m looking forward to her next, It Takes a Psychic, written under her Jayne Castle pen name and set in fantastic, futuristic Harmony. If I’m really lucky, the story will even feature an intrepid Dust Bunny or two. I can’t wait to find out!

A fine ending to the trilogy. Was not expecting the twist at the end with a certain daughter and father.

This is the final book in the thrilling Lost Night Files trilogy and it is an excellent conclusion to this contemporary romantic suspense series. Amelia Rivers, the last member of the podcasting team from the Lost Night Files podcast, can see auras and energy prints, particularly at night. She knows that she is being stalked and reaches out to the private investigator, Gideon Sweetwater, for help because she is certain that he will relate to her psychic abilities. While Gideon is initially hesitant to take the case, he is sucked in very quickly because of his interest in Amelia and her ties to a list of people with known paranormal talents.
In true Jayne Ann Krentz fashion, they go on a fast-paced adventure running from one location to the next, gathering clues and coming up against several villains. I always love her characters, they are what keep me coming back to all of her series, time and again. Gideon and Amelia were no exception, they were fun to watch work together and fall in love. I think this provided an excellent ending to the series, wrapping up most of the storylines but definitely leaving room to expand this universe and connect to other stories.
I love how Jayne Ann Krentz pulls everything together inside of the JayneVerse. As I mentioned before this is the final book of a trilogy so you should definitely read the first two books, 'Sleep No More' and 'The Night Island', before 'Shattering Dawn', but I would also highly recommend reading the Fogg Lake trilogy starting with 'The Vanishing'. You do not have to read that series to follow the Lost Night Files, but Krentz does an amazing job rewarding her long-time fans by linking pieces of her stories and character genealogies together. If you really want to deep-dive, you should definitely check out the Arcane society series and somewhere in there, although I forgot which book, readers are first introduced to the Sweetwater family. If you don't want that commitment but do want to read about some other members of the Sweetwater family, you should definitely check out 'Sweetwater & the Witch' under her pen name Jayne Castle in her Ghost Hunters series.
A sincere thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for providing me a free eArc in return for an honest review.
The conclusion to the lost night! This book answered the questions left lingering from the previous books. There are little Easter eggs peppered throughout this story from other series. I loved each of them as it brings back fond memories of the different paranormal worlds Ms. Krentz created over the years. This book can be read as a standalone. I recommend reading the start of the Lost Night Files to see the whole picture.

If you've read any of Krentz recent novels you know what to expect here - a paranormal mystery that a young woman feels compelled to investigate, a mysterious man who helps her out. I enjoyed this but it wasn't one of her strongest, partly because the MCs were generic and the mystery didn't have much menace or urgency to it. It was fun enough, but not great, thus 3 stars overall.
Fun wrap-up to this trilogy, with a hint that there may be more. If so, then I'll be there.
Amelia Rivers and Gideon Sweetwater make an interesting couple. She hires Gideon, a private investigator, to find out who is stalking her. She lets on that she has some paranormal talent, he's skeptical. But he decides to take the job. As no surprise to readers who have read the first two in this series, we learn that Gideon also has some paranormal talent. They bicker and banter in equal measure as the investigation goes on.
Matters escalate as it becomes obvious that someone is indeed trying to kidnap Amelia. But why? That's the real mystery, along with the identity of the kidnappers, of course. Lots of twists and turns before this story arc is brought to a satisfying conclusion. I was actually caught off guard by one twist, which is unusual for me with this author. Good work, Ms. Krentz. As is often the case with this author's stories, there are two levels of baddies--the immediately obvious one, and the obscured power behind them. This book takes care of the immediate baddies, but the shadowy figures escape to plot on until they reach their goal, whatever that may be.
The rating is generous because I am a long-time fan. The author has lost some of the sparkle that characterized her earlier books, but I will keep reading because the books are still fun.
This is the third in the Lost Night Files series and features the third of the women -- Amelia -- who were kidnapped and used as subjects in an illegal test of a substance that enhanced psychical abilities. Amelia and the other two women now run the podcast The Lost Night Files and are attempting to figure out who did this to them. Amelia also believed she is being stalked, and is uncertain if it relates to this or not, so has hired a PI, Gideon Sweetwater, to investigate.
I liked both Amelia and Gideon. They each have a lot of baggage, and bicker throughout most of the book. The romance was pretty light in this book, and I would have liked a bit more, but the mystery was interesting. I originally thought there would be just three books in this series, but there are enough things left open that we may get more.
3.5 stars: Not my favorite of the trilogy but still not a bad read. I didn’t care for the “insta love” 🙄 but I was glad it didn’t focus on the romance as much as some of the other installments. Also, while this is the end of the trilogy, it’s not the end of the story (at least that’s what the end of the book implies), so not everything is completely wrapped up. Whether I keep going once the next book comes out is up in the air. So technically not sure if this is a trilogy and the next book(s) will be an off-shoot, or if this has morphed into a longer series. Nicely narrated on audio.

Shattering Dawn is apparently the finale of the The Lost Night Files trilogy. This series ends with Amelia Rivers and Gideon Sweetwater as the main characters. Not too long ago, Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March, and Amelia Rivers were strangers, until their fateful stay at the Lucent Springs Hotel. They were lured to the Lucent Springs Hotel under the false premise of job opportunities related to its remodeling. That night changed their lives forever - they lost all memory of what transpired and emerged with paranormal abilities.
Honestly, this book was not that good [for me], and I listened to it. There were more than a couple of times that I almost gave up on it, but I persevered, and the story finally got better about halfway through.
I’m really getting tired of the Founder’s Formula or other enhancing the psychic strength tropes. It’s a typical Jayne Krentz book. I tend to like but not love the characters. But they must do something for me since I keep reading them!
To be completely honest I am 100% invested in the world Jayne Ann Krentz has created through her novels from her 2 alter-egos to her many and diverse Arcane Society world novels. So I'm not terribly objective when I say I enjoyed this installment. I am a little disappointed in her last few novels where she has begun to significantly downplay the romance aspects. This book doesn't really count as a romance.
IMO this is the weak link in the series. I still enjoyed it, but it was incredibly predictable, still had too many loose ends for the third book in a trilogy, and no chemistry between the leads.
Additionally, the whole mystery of the trilogy was solved in one chapter from the "bad guy's" perspective. It was spoon-fed to the reader and, as a long time JAK reader, it was pretty disappointing.
I love Jayne Ann Krentz' series usually but this third book seemed like a bit of a letdown as a conclusion. Gideon's side storyline seemed rushed and unimportant. Usually the Sweetwaters' have such great chemistry with their partners but this book didn't give me that. I was kind of disappointed
FINAL DECISION: A satisfying blend of paranormal suspense and romance that successfully concludes the Lost Night Files trilogy, though it leans more heavily on suspense than romance. While I would have enjoyed more romantic moments between Amelia and Gideon, the well-crafted mystery and fascinating paranormal elements make this a satisfying end to the Lost Night Files.
THE STORY: This book, the third and final in the series, follows Amelia Rivers, a member of the Lost Night Files podcast team, as she investigates a mysterious stalker who may be connected to her own haunting past. The story intertwines supernatural elements with romantic suspense, centered around a night of missing memories and unexplained phenomena.
Three years ago, Amelia Rivers and her two friends, Pallas Llewellyn, and Talia March, were lured to the Lucent Springs Hotel under the false premise of job opportunities related to its remodeling. That night changed their lives forever - they lost all memory of what transpired and emerged with paranormal abilities. This shared experience led them to form the Lost Night Files podcast, through which they discovered others with similar stories: some gained enhanced abilities, while others were driven to madness.
Amelia's particular gift allows her to perceive the night world in a landscape of colors and auras, which she captures through vintage photography equipment. When she becomes aware of a stalker, she uses her ability to photograph their aura before seeking help from private investigator Gideon Sweetwater.
Though skeptical of Amelia's claims and unsure whether she's paranoid or running a con, Gideon accepts the case.
OPINION: This final installment of The Lost Night Files trilogy was enjoyable. The book leans heavily into the suspense elements, which might be a slight adjustment for readers who, like me, typically prefer a stronger focus on romance. However, the story is so well-crafted that this didn't significantly impact my enjoyment.
What really works in this book is how the paranormal elements are woven into both the characters' personal development and the overall mystery. Amelia's supernatural abilities with auras and photography give her character interesting quirks, while Gideon's struggles with his nightmarish dreamscapes add depth to his personality. Like in other books by Krentz featuring paranormal talents, these abilities create an engaging energy that elevates the story beyond a standard suspense novel.
The relationship between Amelia and Gideon develops at a faster pace than in the previous books, and while their chemistry is genuine, the romantic moments are somewhat sparse. They spend most of the book working together to solve the mystery of Amelia's stalker, which gives their relationship a strong partnership feel. Their mutual acceptance of each other's paranormal abilities helps build their connection, even if the romantic elements sometimes take a backseat to the action.
The suspense storyline is particularly strong in this installment. The twists and turns are well-plotted and make perfect sense within the story's framework. Everything connects logically, with the foundation for each revelation carefully laid throughout the narrative. The return to Lucent Springs Hotel adds an extra layer of tension that keeps the pages turning.
As the conclusion to the trilogy, the book does an excellent job of bringing all the plot threads together while maintaining the high stakes established in the earlier books. While I would have enjoyed more romantic scenes between Amelia and Gideon, their relationship still feels authentic and satisfying. The paranormal aspects of the story continue to fascinate, giving both characters interesting challenges to overcome together.
WORTH MENTIONING: Plenty of Easter Eggs for longtime Krentz/Quick/Castle readers. It does not distract new readers, who probably will not even realize that there are references at all.
CONNECTED BOOKS: SHATTERING DAWN is the third book in the Lost Night Files series. The romance is self-contained, and while there is an overarching storyline, a reader could easily catch up and enjoy this as a standalone.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.
NOTE: I received an eARC of this book via Netgalley so that I could prepare this review before the release date. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.
The final book in the Lost Night Files trilogy brings the answers Amelia, Pallas, and Talia have been looking for. Shattering Dawn is an entertaining, action-packed read that brought the trilogy to a mostly-satisfying close.
As with the previous two couples, Amelia and Gideon’s supernatural abilities match each other like lock and key. Amelia is a photographer whose paranormal skills work best in the dark and Gideon is an injured private investigator who is skeptical but interested in the tale Amelia brings him. His own skills are lethal and keep him from wanting to get close to anyone, but he and Amelia are of course, well suited. Their romance is easy to enjoy and they have a good rhythm that makes the pages of the book fly by.
At the heart of the story, however, is the search for answers. What happened to Amelia and her friends during their “lost night”? Who is responsible and what are they up to? To find answers, Amelia and Gideon are going to have to use all their skills and dodge supernatural-powered assassins. Jayne Ann Krentz keeps the action going for the whole story which made it an entertaining read. However, the resolution wasn’t completely satisfying for me. I won’t spoil the story, but at times it felt like Krentz was more interested in connecting and expanding her “Jayneverse” (connecting her Krentz, Jayne Castle, and Amanda Quick books together) than bringing the particular series she was in to a satisfying close. Even with that caveat, I still liked the book overall. Shattering Dawn has entertaining characters, a fast-moving plot, and is typical of Krentz’s style, which I do enjoy.

This is the third book in this trilogy. It centers around three young women that go to a motel in the desert, and loose a whole day to amnesia, and wake up to a fire around them, and heightened talents. This book has them hiring a private psychic detective to help find the people behind the kidnapping, and mystery. The two main characters started out rough, but soon became an asset to each other. The book was compelling , as they were on the run after bad people, or from bad people. I liked the ending a lot. I gave it 4 stars. Clean romance.
