Man, I'm telling you, I've been a huge skeptic regarding all these plant based, vegan kooks pushing their froo-froo hard to find ingredients onto my beef tenderloin brain.

"Be right there honey!"

So, yeah, my wife gets this cookbook for Mother's Day and I'm forced to at least pretend like I'm going to eat this stuff, let alone ENJOY it...hah!

"Yeah, baby, I watered the garden!"

Anyway, this Rich Roll guy, Mr. Dicathlon Vegan do gooder, he...uh...his.....he and his family, they, uh, their recipes - they're pretty good. Especially the lasagna made with zucchini instead of pasta - genius. And what's really crazy is the vegan cheese, and pesto that'll blow yer mind. It's actually insanely good stuff that even makes a meat eater like me rethink my game plan. This is a pretty good introduction for folks who may be a little intimidated by anything green.

I really wanted to like this book and purchase one for all my friends to win them over to plant-based living. The photography in this book is absolutely stunning! Unfortunately, it's a bit new-age-y to win over converts on my side of the world. All kinds of statistics and medical information is provided throughout the book with no references to sources or footnotes. The authors openly point out their shortage of credentials, but I felt this would even more compel them to list sources. [Just an aside: the presence of 'honey' in many recipes, an animal product, did not seem to be addressed.] I am happy this mind/body/spirit lifestyle works for them. Lovely family. I had already been won over to the plant-based lifestyle myself, but felt this book might not be the best messenger or guide for a 'plant power way'.

This is a really beautiful lifestyle/coffee table book about vegan cooking. It has super healthy food and lots of advice for starting out and pictures of rich roll running without a shirt on. The food sounds lovely (haven't tried anything yet) and focuses on whole foods, gluten free and mainly sugar free. There's lots of nice sounding nut 'cheeses' and milks and I'm pretty excited about the tempeh 'meat-loaf' and the peanut butter cookies....There are lots of recipes with nuts in so if you have a nut allergy (like my beau) you may be a bit limited here.
They are a ridiculously good looking family though with a gorgeous house - may have to move in with them

I’m so conflicted about this book! I love Rich Roll, and I agree with the principles he puts forth in this book. but also, suggesting that people eat the fungus dust off of caterpillars from China is exactly why people think veganism is crazy. And also, don’t preach about the ills of eating a pineapple in winter when you’re advocating for EATING THE FUNGUS DUST OFF OF CATERPILLARS FROM CHINA. You know that’s not ecologically sound either, right? The book is just not realistic. No it’s not easy to get your kids to eat a pile of cooked chard for breakfast. And the whole “we don’t eat leftover onions because onions turned black when left out in plague rooms during the Black Death” stuff was a little bit of a reach for me. The book just sort of oozes privilege and elitism, which I don’t get from Rich’s other works. Bummer. I’m so happy that this works for them and their family but it’s just not accessible for regular people like me.

I wish this family would adopt me. I mean they have 4 kids, what's one more? Super positive and uplifting. However, not sure I am on their same page as I was eating a pint of ice cream while reading this....so I have a bit of work to do...but I did find a few recipes to try and even if you don't use the recipes, it's just a happy book of an inspiring adorable family eating healthy foods.

Is this a cookbook or a family photo album?
Cumbersome size. Who keeps a cookbook/life guide on their coffee table? No one.
The book won't stand in my cookbook holder. I find all the fabulous lifestyle photos of the family nauseating (yes they are well done). Did not enjoy the writing either. Who's writing now? From one paragraph to the next it would switch from her to him.
These vegans eat honey. Garlic used sparingly. Limit fruit, then they load their smoothies with fruit, or fruit juice.
Did enjoy the few gratuitous images of the nearly naked dad sprinting across the page.
I have perused better vegan cookbooks, ones that inform you, not overload you.
Sanjay Gupta wrote the forward, he's a fan. I am not.

Great recipes that I'll be keeping close at hand. At first I was a little afraid that the recipes would be complicated and made with expensive ingredients, I soon found that that certainly wasn't the case. Most of the ingredients could be found at your local grocery store. The recipes are straightforward and wholesome. A great book for families looking to add more greens to their lifestyle.

I applaud the originality of the recipes. Obviously I selected it for the health aspects. However I've found errors in it and the recipes I've made were just ok. There's no way a carnivore would love it IMO. There are much better plant based cookbooks out there.

I'm a big fan of Rich Roll's Podcast. As a vegan and a long distance runner there is a lot of parallel (though obviously I'm the BOP or Back of Packer). I also tend to have an addictive/obsessive personality - so there is resonance here with the background. This is a very large book - definitely coffee table size. I've tried several recipes and taken a lot of the hints. I can strongly recommend the breakfast recipes - in particular the pancakes, porridge, and the puddings are all excellent. I think I most enjoy how thorough and how friendly the book feels. I find there is a dichotomy here because, on the one hand, I love all the content which goes far more into lifestyle and is less a strictly speaking cookbook BUT the book is so large that, as a cookbook, it's fairly unwieldy in my kitchen which is small. I'm learning a lot from this book and consider it one of my best purchases this year!

A chia seed, a kale leaf, and a cherimoya walk into a bar. The bartender, a cow, says ....

My friend turned me on to Rich Roll's podcast. It's right in my wheelhouse, so I dig it. That lead me to this book. I've been pescatarian for a bit and limiting sugar and gluten from my diet and moving towards full plant-based diet and so this was right on time. It's not just a vegan cook book, it's a spiritual book. I already know that eating a plant based diet is mind-blowing in it's positive effects in every area of my life, but I need to know more about HOW to go full vegan, and this book is helping me with that. I like the way it's set up and I'm learning a lot from Rich and his wife and their journey.
I highly recommend it for those that are ready to start their journey towards a new dimension of healthy living.

This is one of those lifestyle books that annoy me-- beautiful family and home "living the life" and it's seemingly all because of the tips they are about to share with you. The layout made the content part hard to read, but the recipes themselves are not that exciting.

Cute, but a bit cheesy. (Well, vegan cheese of course, lol) I'm always interested in vegan ultra athletes so I decided to check out mr Roll's book. Great read with nice, tasty recipes.

More plant-based confirmation bias. 🖤 Their recipes aren’t as simplistic as the previous recipe book I read but I loved loved loved the attention they gave to protein, family, and the environment.

Am I the only one in here that wasn't wowed over by this one...!? :( It is so very rarely, that I give anything below a 3* rating...

The perfect family, the perfect house, the perfect kitchen, and last but not least - that perfect food. But it's not that "perfect" everyday for most of us... Or is it only me...? Yes, I do realize I might sound a little bit sarcastic just there, or even having a bit of a rant in someone's eyes, but when I'm looking for a cookbook, for recipes, they must at least give me a bit of promise, encouragement that I can work with that, that the book can work with me, for me and within my lifestyle and my family.

This book, although looking like one for everyone, seems to be very "exclusive". Most of the recipes seem to be very over thought and the book itself have a very "preachy" feeling. It looks like it's promising the life/lifestyle that you can easily achieve - just simply by cooking from it. Many health facts and promises don't have any background, no references to the sources, just simple wishful thinking so?
Yes, most of us will know at this stage that plant based diet is good for us, our bodies and mental health, but if you're talking about specifics - have the facts right and credit those who actually checked it, researched it, worked for it.

Full of glossy pictures of the family itself, of the house - the food seemed to be taking back step rather than center stage. Shame. What, with all the resources available to the authors, could be an amazing cookbook and lifestyle book about plant based diet, turned out into a self centered, shout out about their glorious life and "pack on the back" kind of thing achievement...

"Guidance for the whole family" - no, thank you.

This book is beautiful with lovely photography but the application of using it as a cook book is cumbersome. It is large/bulky and the binding is too fragile to handle the everyday wear n' tear of kitchen life.
The recipes are pretty delicious but aesthetically all look like slop (which I don't really mind either but the family does). I found the sauces section most enjoyable and helpful. There are mistakes within the recipes themselves; for example, sometimes listing ingredients but then not incorporating them in the process.
Overall, the application of this as a cookbook left me wanting. That being said, I loved the personal excepts from the Roll family and support the philosophy of a plant-based diet 100%. I am grateful that this book exists and that the Roll family put themselves out there!

One of the most inspiring healthy lifestyle books I've ever read. The book is just beyond gorgeous to look at and chock full of recipes you can and will want to make - along with some incredibly valuable nutritional information. I cannot possibly say enough good things about the super foods section of their book!

One of my favorite things about this book is just how personal it feels. As a mother, I sincerely appreciate the family style approach to many of the recipes as well as consideration of children's palates.

This book literally has me jumping for joy and I cannot wait to spend the summer cooking my way through each and every recipe!

I own this cookbook and love all of the information available in it. However, when it comes down to recipes, if you were new to eating a vegan/plant based diet it would mostly seem overwhelming and complicated. I already happen to have a lot of the ingredients stocked in my house so that wasn't a huge issue for me but thinking of beginners, this would not be the cookbook I would recommend. I've tried maybe a dozen recipes and honestly just think that they are okay and nothing super amazing. I love Rich Roll and his podcast and his journey of how he overcame poor health and alcoholism so I was happy to support him by purchasing the book.

A great book, I found it more inspirational than practical. That could also be due to the fact that I’m new to the so-called ‘plant-based’ world and many of the ingredients suggested within the recipes are new to me. Overall I really enjoyed this book, found it was a great read with some delicious-looking recipes (I have yet to try any but have added some recipes to the list), and learned a lot about plant-based lifestyles along the way. I still enjoy my meat and don’t think I can give it up entirely, but I can now officially call myself a ‘flexitarian’, also a new term I learned!

In an ongoing quest to collect as many vegan cookbooks as possible, I got this shiny one, which ended up being a bit more than just a cookbook: it's also a treatise on Rich Roll and his family's entire spiritual lifestyle, and it's as large as a friggin coffee table book. Not that I'm uninterested in Rich Roll, but I was really buying it more for the recipes than anything, so I found all the color photos of his family, although nice, a little unnecessary. As a side note, it's a bit cumbersome to have such a large book open on the counter next to the burner while you're cooking.

Aside from that, the recipes themselves look gorgeous in the photos but tended to be more difficult in execution. My zucchini lasagna was quite a bit watery, and on the second batch I added fake meat crumbles and some other veggies to bulk up the absorbency. Roll's recipes also often don't include any seasoning advice - which as a burgeoning cook I still rely on as a guide, if nothing else. I really can't stand it when all authors will say is "salt to taste;" I can't really salt to taste for everyone, can I? The carrot and ginger soup, although incredibly hearty, didn't call for any seasoning at all and so I ended up adding a lot of other spices ad hoc. Another con was that you often had to make a different recipe in order to complete the first one - Roll will have you made his vegan cheese ball to go on top of the bolognese pasta, etc. That just seems a little unfair to spring on the cook...

Things I really enjoyed: the cleanliness and heartiness of all the ingredients mentioned, as well as the detailed breakdown of their nutritional value, and of the specific macros. This was incredibly helpful, and not something that you always necessarily get in a condensed cookbook. That was the best part of the spiritual aspect of the book, to me - the tie-in with health and longevity. There is even a long section on teas and drinks if you're into that. I am definitely going to check it out if I ever get into tea, which I hope to someday.

I would recommend this book if you enjoy the *experience* of cooking as much as getting it done. Or if you really like Rich Roll and want to find out more about how he got so successful and healthy, or if you want to know what his wife's spirit name is.

I absolutely love this book both for reading straight through and for diving into the recipes. Rich & Julie have done an excellent job of making a plant-based lifestyle not only super easy & accessible to anyone (including families with small, sometimes picky children), they've also managed to include the importance of ethical sourcing & thoughtful eating without feeling preachy or judgmental. On top of all of this, the recipes are absolutely delicious & crazy easy!

Julie (Rich's co-author & wife) is the mastermind in the kitchen & her cooking style is quick & easy with amazing attention to detail in the blending of flavors & infusing her creations with love & positivity. I've been cooking my way through the book & even my carnivore husband has been gobbling up the delicious meals that have resulted from this book. She uses easy to source ingredients & most recipes serve 4-6 so our family of 3 usually has enough for 1 meal & lunch leftovers the following day.

I highly recommend making a double batch of her veggie burgers on the weekend as they save really well in the fridge & are perfect for snacking on or supplementing a smaller meal during the week. We wrapped our in blanched collards & each of us added the toppings we liked best. Mine had jalapeño sauerkraut, lemony dressing, walnut parmesan & a little dijon mustard. Dan had Chipotle mayo & walnut parmesan. Cairo, our 5 year-old, just dipped his in a lot of catsup, lol. Add a big side salad or a side of fresh veggies like carrots & bell pepper slices & they make for a really filling & energizing meal that you can be happy to feed your family.

I'm still working my way through the rest of the recipes, but I just couldn't wait any longer to share my review. There are also recipes for a bunch of sauces, soups, salads, smoothies, hearty meals & even desserts that are packed with nutrients & healthy whole foods. Raw apple pie sweetened with dates, anyone? I'm making the peanut butter cookies for the guys this weekend & I'm sure they'll be a hit!

The Plant Power Way is a beautifully produced cookbook written by this beautiful happy healthy family. The cookbook contains some great recipes, lots of dubious health information and so many pictures of this beautiful family that is hard to remember sometimes that this book is about food.

About the recipes: Some are a little time consuming and call for the occasional hard-to-find ingredient but most are quite doable. I feel that they are family friendly only for parents with lots of free time whose children willingly accept new flavours and textures (if you are one of these families, wow!) The recipes are also needlessly specific about certain ingredients which is a big pet peeve of mine. They call for things like “farmers market mushrooms” and “Celtic sea salt”.

About the health information: I believe vegan diets are healthy but I don’t believe that High fructose corn syrup is toxic, that onions absorb bacteria and viruses from the air, or that Gluten has been linked to Autism. When I read these claims, which have no scientific base, in a book published by a major publisher, I get very aggravated. I am annoyed that so many people who are involved in natural health promotion are so blatantly unscientific and unfazed by spreading misinformation.

I give the book 3 stars because it contains some good recipes and is after all very pretty.

I read this start to finish like a novel rather than a cookbook because I wanted to really see all the recipes rather than randomly pick and choose and because there are lifestyle tips and things interspersed between the recipes. As many have said, the photos are beautiful and inspiring, but even reading this book was a physical challenge due to its unwieldy size and shape. I can’t imagine how one would cook from it in the kitchen because it’s huge and can’t be laid open on any of the pages without it closing. As a long time vegetarian and whole hearted believer in the plant based diet, I didn’t find much information I didn’t already know, but it’s a nice refresher I guess. The recipes ranged from very simple to what look like time consuming recipes where you would need to make three of the other recipes in the book also to complete that recipe due to needing sauces, toppings, etc. I prefer something quick and easy. I do plan on trying a lot of these recipes though and don’t doubt they are good. I did enjoy the photos and the stories about the Rich and Julie. Overall, this would make a nice coffee table book and conversation starter for sure, but it’s not my favorite plant based cookbook by far.

This absolutely gorgeous book of this beautiful family and the plant-powered life that drives them was an inspiration, delight, and joy to read. I absolutely loved it from start to finish. That being said, I have been plant-based myself for 11 1/2 years, and I still found that many recipes included ingredients that aren't super accessible or standard even in plant-based kitchens like mine. (Maybe that's why they are "plant-powered" and not just "plant-based"!) All the lifestyle, light, love, spiritual connections, and vibrations mentioned completely resonated with me. The recipes all looked amazing--I'm just not sure how many I will actually make based on the stretch ingredients, which is my only reason for taking this from a 5-star to a 4-star. I absolutely highly recommend this book, even if purely for the inspiration from such incredible role models. These people don't just talk the talk, they walk the walk (or should I say, "run the run!"), and it shows in every way. LOVE!

I read this book front to back including all the recipes and it kick-started my plant based diet. There's lots of good recipes and nice intentions in it.
The reason I took away two stars is because 1) the book is too large. It feels more like a coffee table book than a guide to be used - pretty but not practical 2) there's no ingredient index which makes it much less useful for a newbie like me. And from what I gather from the articles within, this book is very much targeted towards newbies. 3) most of the recipes does not have pictures.

LOVED IT! I have been plant-curious for awhile now and am always looking for good, simple guides to help me implement this life-style change. Picked this up over the weekend and could not have been happier. I've tried a couple of the recipes already and am really impressed. The dijon honey salad dressing is rocking my world right now ;) Can't wait to make more!!!

Though much in this lifestyle book is aspirational rather than practical, it was a great read. Rich has a knack for explaining topics that may seem a little 'out there' in really relatable ways. I liked the back and forth formatting between his and his wife's writing. It made for a nice balance. I don't think I will be using any recipes from this book but a great intro to plant-based eating.

I mostly enjoyed this book, taking issue with misinformation about garlic and onions and the sometimes condescending tone. Otherwise, it has inspired me to return to the way I used to be when my kids were young, eating healthier foods and generally adopting a healthier lifestyle. For that reminder, I am grateful. I haven’t yet tried the recipes, but fully intend to.

Beautifully designed book, tasty recipes and very Instagramable food (I guess it's important for some these days). It includes also practical advice for the kitchen rather than just the recipes.
BUT the meals end up being expensive and some of the ingredients are quite exotic and you might struggle to find them.
However, great for those special occasions a few times a year.
