In 1947, a freighter in the Malacca Straits sends out a macabre distress signal. When help arrives all the officers and crew are found dead - with no visible signs of injury. Present day: An environmental disaster in British Colombia pits Billy Bradford against Future Energy Group and its ruthless head of security, Luc Fortesque. A devastating terror strike on the world's grandest luxury hotel has the globe clamoring for the head of the mastermind, Sebastian Gardner. But the three men will soon become pawns in a plot that dates back to the end of World War II and the collusion between a powerful, centuries-old cabal and a rogue priest.
Apocalyptic stories are always something I look forward to and this book stood high on my expectations and fulfilled it with style.
One note: Be ready to dive from an era to another.
Scientific advancements, exciting experiments and battle scenes are the strong-points of the author.
This kind of writing style is rare in Indian books and that’s why it gives you goosebumps.
Efficient writing is all the author is made up of: A master of plots in true sense.
When one has multiple stories to tell in a single book, many flinch and cannot convey the story convincingly. But this is the art of narration that the author seems to master effortlessly.
Blending genres after genres is another specialty of the author as we get to see action, thriller, and history lessons all put together in a bunch, giving the dish a mouthwatering taste.
I read this book and the word that stayed with me and will be helpful for the aspiring authors, is detailing. The characters are dealt with enormous care and their stories are fabricated in the most enjoyable manner. Research was another factor that enthralled me thoroughly.
The author emerges as a strong and skilled narrator who can switch from places to places, people to people with a smoothness that is difficult to acquire.
Books like this deserve appreciation and should be read more.
Recommended to thriller and action lovers, you shouldn’t miss on this series.
NOTE: Free copy from author in exchange for an Honest review. And honest it shall be.
A ship in peril sends a distress signal. Another ship to the rescue. Crew found dead under suspicious conditions. Ship sinks. Something is lost along with it.
This is how the book opens, on a fast paced action packed note. The author starts off very nicely, taking the reader slowly through the timelines beginning at 1947 and makes quick, neat jumps to sow the seeds for the story and brings us to the present.
In the first 50 or so pages of the book, you get a taste of everything. Secret Societies. Sinister plots. Witch hunts. Bio-hazardous material. Mercenaries out for blood. Globe trotting. Guys impaled. Eyes gouged out. Bullets flying. Clocks ticking. Men slashed in HALF (Really? Final Destination much?).
It all seems very Dan Brown-meets-Charles Brokaw (that’s a compliment). The story seems to be going nicely enough and keeps building to something big, APOCALYPSE BIG. It’s a ride you are enjoying. You forget that this is a budding author, still trying to find his element.
Then something changes.
The fast paced, action packed read that were enjoying thus far becomes a tome and starts to take a toll. People die left and right for no apparent reason. A world class luxury hotel is blown up. There are boat chases where the boats cartwheel. There are Mercenaries with Super Gadgets like Invisibility Cloaks, Jet packs and a personal plane. They are out to grab a weapon code-named Apocalypse. They fire Stinger missiles that hit people in their TEETH. They break into a secure facility that’s never been broken into and steal what was lost on a ship in the beginning of the book. Grenades are put in people’s mouths. Snowmobiles flying and guys jumping on car roofs.
What brings this book low, which otherwise could've been a great read, is the obvious flaws (ignoring the some not so obvious ones):
1. There is no clear Protagonist or Antagonist throughout the book. Just a bunch of Bad-Ass Corporate thugs and mercenaries vying for power, money and revenge. The bad guy turns on bad guy situation with no real reason behind it.
2. The weapon that is supposed to bring about Apocalypse is nothing expect for an advanced version of the Atom bomb. Like what, a Nuclear Warhead? It will supposedly annihilate millions if it goes off. Of course it will. But how will it bring about APOCALYPSE is not explained.
3. The author has a notion of only building up the momentum throughout the book. He keeps his foot on the pedal and keeps accelerating the pace. The action that seems good to begin with, becomes Mind-Numbing and nonsensical after a while. There is really no point behind all the devastation and all the killings and bullets and grenades and rocket launches and bones cracking and helicopters blowing. It feels like Overkill. A case of an action flick gone out of control.
4. The 2 elaborate scenes with witchcraft in it and a ritual being performed are never tied in. They have no relevance to the story in the end and it makes no sense why it was written in.
The problem is, the author Douglas Misquita, starts off brilliantly. But as he keeps writing, he slowly but surely looses sight of the plot. The book simply does not converge into one story line and it simply fails to coalesce. There are too many lose ends and not enough answers. It is not tied in as well as it should've been. There are way too many characters in the book with zero character development. It essentially creates a clutter and does not allow the reader to know who’s who and why.
Here is the redeeming point though. The author has a fluent writing style with a great flow. The choice of words is good and it is his writing capability that keeps you hooked to the book. His decent prose are the saving grace for this book. At times a little coarse around the edges, he needs the support of a good editor and beta readers along with a decent publishing house and he might just blow up.
Here’s wishing you good luck for all your future endeavors with hopes of many great stories to come.
A wholesome adventure riveted with action, tech and the good ole apocalyptic plan
Having read the previous two novels by Douglas Misquita, I was not expecting anything less than an explosive, bullet riddled, immersive cinematic experience. The Apocalypse Trigger did not fall short of this expectation. The Apocalypse Trigger unfolds a multitude of events and characters over both time and geography which convene at a single focal endpoint. Each event is choreographed in Douglas Misquita's characteristically detailed sketches that envelope the reader into his world. Scene setting, combat sequences, heist and escape scenarios written to place you in the centre of the action, whether you have caught your breath or not. Be ready to be exposed to an arsenal of military weaponry and thrilling scientific innovations which create a backdrop of their own to each chapter. There's even a mix of gore for those who get their kicks from the occasional spray of blood and bone. Having a wide cast of characters playing their own significant role in building the story, the book fails to develop substantial character depth which sadly diminishes the strength of the thread that weaves the individual events together. Characters of the novel, including the chief players of the story, do not shed enough light over their personalities for the reader to empathize with them. Characters appear and disappear through the book leaving the reader without any familiar ground to walk through what could have been a more comprehensible adventure. All in all, a three star rating to a wholesome adventure riveted with action, tech and the good ole apocalyptic plan. I look forward to more from Douglas Misquita who is clearly honing his skills for something big!
It’s a perfect Hollywood script, the plot is excellent and the writing style is totally different. I have read all the books of Douglas Misquita i.e. Secret of the Scribe and Haunted, but this is totally different and awesome read. Once you start the Apocalypse trigger you will know that you are in hand of very efficient writer, the story will keep moving briskly from the first page to the back cover of the book. The innovation and creativity of the author reveals beautifully throughout the novel. The author is skilled storyteller without doubt; the details and surroundings are described thoroughly. I liked the mixture of adventure and thriller. But one of the things which I didn’t like is character names, it’s very hard to remember and also have to flip dictionary for many words. All in all, the entire apocalypse trigger is difficult to put down, so I highly recommend this book to thriller lovers, a fast paced gripping story. And yes perfectly scripted action scenes also.
The Apocalypse Trigger is an adventurous thriller. The readers will surely enjoy reading the book in locating the events full of drama. The cover of the book is very beautiful showing glowing images on the dark black background. The intriguing title of the book doesn’t propound so much about the story whelming in the book. After the title the short blurb made me more curious and I was quite eager to explore the chapters residing in the book.
The story works very well in clutching its readers from the beginning. Though it is confusing sometimes but at last all the things are sewed very finely; the beginning of the story drives very gracefully till the end with the clear understandings. All the chapters are connected very neatly by the author in his book.
I felt like watching a Hollywood movie while reading this book!!!
Author, Douglas Misquita has to appreciated for conceiving a story like this that involves lots of places and lots of characters that's why I'm even finding it very hard to review about this story.
Author's vivid narration made reading exciting and fast moving..!!!
The book is full of action, and you will feel like you are watching a action movie.
And a good one.The author has also done a lot of research. The description of the places are quite accurate and this book made me feel like watching a high budget Hollywood movie.
So if you are a action lover then go ahead and read this book.
I was about to start with the third book of the series but before starting with the third one, I wanted to read the first two of the series and trust me it is a marvellous read.
This book is high on the tides. You will witness different eras in one single read.
AD 79: A drunken wager over an imminent natural disaster gives rise to the Vesuvius Group. Over the centuries, their power and wealth have flourished. Today, they influence the upper echelons of World Order. The member families continue the tradition of macabre, and arrogant wagers.
1947: A ship in the Malacca Straits broadcasts a distress signal. When help arrives, her crew is found dead... because somebody wanted to acquire the ship's secret cargo.
Present day: A C160 transporting 'clean energy' cells developed by Future Energy Group crashes into the British Columbia rainforest. The incident claims the lives of two children of the indigenous First Nation People.

In a bid to return to his employer's good graces, Luc Fortesque agrees to 'acquire' weapons technology from a Chinese rival. Unwittingly, he lends himself to the final act of a grand scheme of revenge that dates to the end of World War II.
In the aftermath of a devastating attack on the world's grandest luxury hotel, radical Wiccan, Sebastian Gardner is on the Most Wanted List of every law enforcement agency in the world. But his actions have made him a prime candidate to execute the ultimate suicide mission.
Amid all this, Billy Bradford and Luc Fortesque must put aside their war and become the men they once were to prevent... an apocalypse.
Its seemed like a hollywood movie which turned to a novel. The writing style of the author is very unique. I really enjoyed reading this book. Simple language and sorted scenes.
