I just wanted to pay my bills, keep the fridge stocked, and stay in the only home I’ve ever known.

So, I started a business as a psychic medium. It was fake, of course. I don’t believe in any of it. But my parents did. They used to host séances and coffee readings, and I watched them enough to mimic the act.

It worked... for a while.

Then the shadows started lingering too long.
The whispers got closer.
Clients began having… accidents.

And the imaginary friend who comforted me as a child, the one who grew up with me in dreams, showed up.
His name is Phil Spiers. And he isn’t imaginary anymore.

He says I’m in trouble with the spirit world.

And I think he might be the only one who can save me—if I don’t unravel first. *Please read with caution. This story contains adult themes, including graphic violence, death, and is not suitable for minors.*

Be careful when you peer into the darkness…

…something might decide to peer back.

This book definitely covers a lot of themes. It played upon my innate respect of the occult & spiritual realm. From the moment I read about Atlas’s “secondhand Ouija board” just hanging out as decoration in his psychic Reading Room, I knew problems were soon to follow! Then there are themes of grief & loss, sexuality & insecurity, growth and maturation, as well as working to correct our mistakes.

I really appreciated the author’s ability to give Atlas and Phil such distinct voices & tones as we shift between their two perspectives.

At the book’s outset, Atlas is not a very likable character. He’s in his twenties but still very immature & impulsive. Desperate for money he decides to essentially become a conman: selling his services as a fake fortune teller & psychic medium. The dilemma being: how much of Atlas’s ‘fake’ abilities are actually real? And what price will he, and those around him, pay for his frivolous and carefree dabbling? A steep price, for sure! Atlas’s manner of speaking directly to the reader reminded me of Ferris Bueller breaking the third wall, and I have to admit Atlas grew on me more and more, despite his poor choices.

The second main character, Phil, was a much more level-headed and likable chap. He’s had a connection, through their dreams, to Atlas for many years but it isn’t until Atlas’s ill-conceived foray into fortune-telling that he’s compelled to seek him out in person. What unfolds is a sweet MM love story with the backdrop of an intense spiritual battle.

This is almost two books in one. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that the first 3/4 are mostly a paranormal story with some light horror elements (an exorcism!), while the last bit veers into a sweet story of love, light, and healing.

I do have to point out some editing issues. While I found almost no grammar or spelling issues, there was a lot of missing punctuation. Dialogue missing (sometimes both) quotation marks had a tendency to pull me out of the story. Another read through by the author to correct these wouldn’t be amiss!

I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into when I picked up ‘A Soul to Follow’. The cover and title hinted at something dark and ghostly, but what I actually found was a fascinating mix of paranormal horror and slow-burn romance that kept me reading late into the night.

The story follows Atlas, who starts out pretending to be a psychic medium just to make ends meet. He doesn’t believe in the spirit world at all, which makes it all the more unsettling when real things start to happen. There are some genuinely creepy moments early on – shadows that move on their own, voices in the dark – the kind of scenes that make you glance over your shoulder before turning the next page.

Then comes Phil, a genuine medium who has known Atlas in dreams since childhood. That connection between them is one of the book’s strongest points. It’s strange, tender, and builds beautifully as the two of them face down the dark forces closing in. I liked that their relationship wasn’t rushed. It grows out of trust, fear, and shared vulnerability rather than instant attraction.

Lily Lamb’s writing leans into atmosphere. The haunted-house vibe is spot on, and there’s a sense of real danger throughout the first half of the book. The shift in tone later, when the focus moves more towards healing and romance, took me by surprise at first, but it actually worked quite well. It felt like a reward after all the tension and emotional turmoil.

What really stood out was how emotionally charged the story became by the end. It’s not just about ghosts and demons, it’s about guilt, grief, and the courage it takes to open yourself to love when you’ve spent years pretending you don’t believe in anything.

An exorcism and a love story
Phil, a medium who communicates with spirits has learnt the trade the hard way and after years of practice. He ends up meeting Atlas who has some occult powers, but does not yet understand all about it. Worse, Atlas not understanding what has happened ends up in a lot of spirit world trouble with a grieving mother who has lost her child.
Fast quick gothic world and a cute MM love story.

Ever since he was a child, Phil has experienced the presence of a shrouded yet friendly figure in his dreams. It's intriguing, but as he has psychic abilities he figures it goes with the territory.

Meanwhile, across town, younger man Atlas has experienced similar visions. He has more important things to worry about, however, as he can't find work locally and faces having to sell the much-loved family home left him by his now-deceased parents and moving to the city.

Desperate to remain, Atlas hits on what seems like a good idea. His parents used to commune with the spirit world, through seances and the like; why therefore can't their son set himself up as a psychic, and earn a living that way?

Some suitably-spooky redecoration to the house, plus the acquisition of tarot cards and other spirit-summoning paraphernalia, and Atlas is ready. He puts out an ad, sits back and crosses his fingers; but nothing happens. Just as he's ready to throw in the towel, however, he gets a call: then another, and another, and hey presto, he's in business!

He's a total charlatan, of course, as grieving bereaved mother Ann realises after an unsatisfactory meeting. Desperate to speak to her lost daughter on the other side, she attempts to make contact on her own - and that's when things take a turn for the worse ...

Author Lily Lamb ramps up the ghostly goings-on, with dark, demonic occurrences as Atlas learns the hard way that it’s not just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo and that you really shouldn't screw around with the spirits. It's a lesson for us all in this story where 'I'll See You in My Dreams' meets 'The Exorcist'.

This is a brilliantly written story. Highly Recommend.
Atlas learns more than he wanted from Phil but he finds something more precious… love.
A fantastic ending for this story, both characters are gorgeous. Included are both Phil and Atlas povs but others jump in with their view thoughts.

“She Who Rises” — A Haunting Blend of Shadows and Heart

This is the second book I’ve read by this author, and once again, I’m completely captivated. She Who Rises is a mesmerizing mix of paranormal horror and slow-burn romance — the kind of story that seeps under your skin and refuses to let go. If it were a film, I’d be watching from behind a cushion, peeking through my fingers, equal parts terrified and entranced.

The writing is poetic and powerful — at times reading like a spell, especially in moments that echo lines such as:

“She stands in the rain,
head tilted to the storm,
letting each drop carve wisdom into her skin.”

The characters are beautifully flawed and deeply human — vulnerable yet resilient, each one rising from the ruins of their fears and desires. The author doesn’t just craft a story; they craft an experience — dark, emotional, and full of aching hope.

A true page-turner that lingers long after the last line, She Who Rises is a haunting reminder that even in the darkest places, light finds a way to bloom through the cracks.

Soulful Suspense

Author Lily Lamb sensitively, sensually, and soulfully mesmerizes the reader within the confines of her Paranormal/ LGBTQ Fantasy, shrouded in darkness and light. Through the eyes of her protagonists, Atlas and Phil, who both have psychic abilities, the story unfolds. Atlas, in dire financial straits and unaware of his spiritual connection to the Ether, resorts to establishing a phony fortune telling business; Phil, a conscientious medium who has spent years studying to better channel his spiritual gift.

Throughout the turbulent story plagued by a demon and jinn, Ms. Lamb’s vivid descriptions and turns of phrase artfully channel the pervading danger and desperation Atlas has unwittingly invited into his home. Her patient plotting conveys the romantic tension and tenderness between two kindred souls.

I highly recommend this well-crafted novel which holds the reader in suspenseful abeyance from beginning to end.

Astral Romance vs Demonic Possession

I am a massive fan of Lily Lamb’s work, and once again, she didn’t disappoint as she shared another Phil the Psychic adventure. This time, Phil needs to help with a significant issue created by his astral projection buddy and romantic interest, Atlas, who dabbled in the occult world with his new fortune-telling business. The latter inadvertently unleashed a demonic force that takes possession of a grieving mother, and now Phil and Atlas need to exorcise the evil entity, which is simultaneously torturing another soul it had trapped.

Lily’s book uniquely blends horror and LGBTQ romance; the latter lacks explicit sex scenes but features a slow-burning longing as Phil and Atlas dance around each other, wondering about reciprocal affection as they dream of a future together.

I recommend reading this one with the lights on, rather than in bed, as I did, otherwise you might end up jumping at shadows.

Haunting, tender and hopeful

A Soul to Follow invites you into a world where the veil is thin between the human and the supernatural and every choice matters. Lily Lamb keeps the pace taut without rushing the tenderness. The romance unfolds with care between the two main characters carrying scars, learning to trust what they feel as much as what they see. The twists land, but it’s the steady thread of redemption and the quiet insistence of hope that linger. The occult elements are treated with respect, mysterious, not sensational so the spiritual stakes feel real. Lamb’s prose is vivid without being showy; scenes hum with sensory detail and emotion. I closed the book feeling both satisfied and a little more awake to the unseen. If you love paranormal romance with a gothic hush and a true emotional core, this one delivers

Interesting story

The prologue felt a bit heavy with exposition, making it a slower start for me. However, once the story got going in Chapter 1, it really picked up pace and became engaging and enjoyable. I liked Atlas and Phil and the journey they went on, both as they fought to overcome evil together and later as they came to discover the feelings they had for each other. Overall a good read.

Atlas would do astral traveling in his sleep, with an imaginary friend, who it turned out was real. He was not only real, but had a longstanding crush on Atlas. When Atlas got in trouble with evil spirits, the friend actually used the Lord's Prayer to intervene. I find this an odd combination: older/yonger, real/spirit romance, occult/Christian all mixed in, but I enjoyed it. When it was over I wondered how much of it could be real, but love is real, and it was a good love story.

The “fake it till the spirits notice” premise is irresistible and executed with style. Excellent character work, deliciously oppressive vibes, and a finale that’s equal parts terrifying and intimate.
