The Hitler Legacy: The Nazi Cult in Diaspora: How it was Organized, How it was Funded, and Why it Remains a Threat to Global Security in the Age of Terrorism

Rate this book
More than thirty years after his first investigation of the Nazi underground Peter Levenda has returned again and again to his quest for the truth about the true character of the Nazi cult and the people and political movements it has influenced in the decades since the end of World War II.

The wide sweep of this investigation moves from a Ku Klux Klan headquarters in Reading, Pennsylvania to the New York City office of the Palestine Liberation Organization; from the apartment of a notorious neo-Nazi leader to an Islamic boarding school—headquarters of the man who ordered the Bali Bombings. When Levenda uncovered the existence of a Nazi underworld in Asia, the nexus of religion, politics, terrorism and occult beliefs was revealed to be the real domain of the threat to global security.

Meticulously researched—from both archival material and declassified intelligence agency files, to personal interviews and investigations undertaken in Asia, Europe and Latin America—The Hitler Legacy is the story of how the mistakes of the 20th century have come home to roost in the 21st.

This book will challenge the conventional thinking about such subjects as the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamist terrorism and even about the alleged death of one of history's most infamous killers—Adolf Hitler.

There is some good information in this book. But the theory that terrorism is sponsored by a nazi underground is a bit far fetched and not a lot of support is given. This book barely wet my appetite for more information on german history especially after ww2.

Levenda continues to pull on threads seeking out newly declassified documents, persons involved, and documentation in private collections uncovering more layers to past events and their continued vibrations. This work certainly reminds us that nothing happens in a vacuum and the lines of past events are never as neatly drown as we would wish. Levenda is open about the nature of his sources, what is the limit of current knowledge and possible implications.

My copy was a gift from Goodreads First Reads.

interesting take on how we got to where we are now. what is happening now is a result of WW1 and the rise of the Nazis

really solid read. this is my first Levenda solo work, and i was not disappointed.

he does a great job of addressing the fact that his claims might seem a bit far-fetched at first, and acknowledging that while he will attempt to cite as many sources as possible, some of his sources are too anecdotal to be academically listed. for a researcher operating in a field like this, that kind of humility helps me take his work seriously, versus an author making claims without even trying to leave a paper trail.

helped me understand global history after world war i a lot better, especially concerning the levant region & south america. he did a good job summarizing his previous research on these topics, so that i didn't feel too behind as a first timer.

overall, would highly recommend to anyone curious about the succession plans of the third reich, and how the politics of the world we live in are just a continuation of what was happening during the world wars.

Former Nazis didn't just fade away, in many cases they assumed other names and were quietly assimilated into other cultures and lands. Eyeopening how hate, power and money go together and hasn't really changed. There are lots of covert operations that happened and hiding gold to help those who were/are sympathetic to the case of hatred.

I stopped reading this book for a while and picked it back up recently. The topic is quite interesting, which is what drew me to it, but the author's writing style is challenging and could've been greatly improved by the use of a capable editor (e.g. the use of acronymns without defining on first reference, the use of third person in some places when referring to his previous work but first person in other places). A better editor would have increased this by at least a star, if not more.
