This is a dark collection of three interconnected stories that center around characters whose lives have been shaped and ultimately unraveled by lies. Howard wants to make up for his past mistakes, but trying to fix things has its own set of consequences. Martha thinks everyone lies, armed with fire and fury she takes justice into her own hands. Then there’s Royce O’Riley, a charismatic cult-like figure who claims to have found a path to the ultimate truth and uses ruthless methods to recruit followers to his remote island.
This book was so entertaining! It’s disturbing and packed with twists. It really leans into the idea that lying always catches up with you, and that nobody is ever completely honest. My favorite characters were Howard—his arc was tragic and pretty messed up— and Royce, who I thought was super intriguing. I was fascinated by the brutal ways he “recruited” liars and forced them to face the truth on his terms.
Though the writing styles vary across the three authors —and I preferred certain POVs over others— the stories connect seamlessly, with Royce acting as the narrative thread that ties them all together. The ending was also unexpected and very fitting with a payoff that brings the theme full circle.
Overall, The Ugly Truth is an exploration of deceit, consequences, and the masks people wear. If you’re into morally complex stories packed with shocks, graphic scenes of violence and unsettling truths—this one’s for you!
The Ugly Truth is three interconnected stories of profound and graphic horror about lies, treachery, and the ugly truth behind them. In the real world, deception and dishonesty cause pain, destruction, and horrors every day. In this book, splatterpunk masters Aron Beauregard, John Skipp, and Shane McKenzie unapologetically shine a cruel light on the realities of it all.
Each of these stories is impactful and horrifying in its own right. The authors brilliantly combine psychological horror, chilling societal mirroring, and grisly sequences into compelling tales that literally and figuratively clench your insides. But together, these three stories create a vicious and visceral narrative of terror, torture, horrors, and pain, of lies and truth and intent and consequences both immediate and rippling that will grip your mind and challenge your perspective.
A 5-star highly recommended read, but splatterpunk and extreme horror fans only, please.
I absolutely loved the first part written by Aron Beauregard. It has a great main character and fantastic ideas and scenes in it. The story is unpredictable, fastpaced and at times totally heart-wrenching. Also, there is an extremely violent, shocking kill (or kills, I guess) in it that disturbed me quite a bit. The other two parts of the books were okay but did not impress me as much as the first story. I liked the ending of the third story very much.
