Habib Selmi (Tunisian Arabic: حبيب السالمي) (born 1951) is a Tunisian novelist and short story writer. He was born in Al-Ala near the historic city of Kairouan. To date, he has published eight novels and two short story collections.
Selmi's novel The Scents of Marie-Claire was shortlisted for the Arabic Booker Prize. His work has been translated into a number of languages, including English and French, and has featured in multiple issues of Banipal magazine.

Selmi has lived in Paris since 1985 where he teaches Arabic literature.

El narrador vuelve a Basatín, Túnez, el barrio de su primera juventud, luego de cinco años. Ha venido a pasar unos días de vacaciones en casa de su hermano Ibrahim; su esposa, en esta ocasión no pudo acompañarlo porque debía trabajar, allá en París.

Yusra, la esposa de su hermano; la bella Leila, hermana de Yusra; y Naíma, la vecina, viuda aún joven y atractiva son las mujeres de Basatín, esenciales en la historia.

El narrador, disfuta de su visita, recuperando los pequeños placeres de los lugares familiares y de las comidas. Pero algo en él ha cambiado, y ahora se siente incómodo frente a las condenas sociales que, con la coartada de la pureza, dan lugar a la crueldad.

Una ilustración de la vida cotidiana a través de una muy buena historia, bien contada.

PD. Me hizo acordar a Época de migración al Norte.
