Drawing upon his own struggles with a late dyslexia diagnosis, and his experience as a teacher, Dan Batchelor wanted to demonstrate to his pupils that anything is possible, creating a relatable and engaging protagonist alongside a narrative that is both playful and fun introduction to science fiction whilst remaining rooted in reality, dealing with topics including morality, power and friendship.

Jack Palmer: A New Order, which comes out in June, tells a new story on what happens when extra-terrestrials make contact with earth. In the movies Dan watched growing up, when aliens invaded, humans come together to save the world, in this imaging things go very different.

Dan Batchelor’s debut novel is absolutely amazing! I read it in one sitting. The book shocked me to my core and I was devastated for Jack and his family when the aliens invaded.

The book follows Jack and his Mum’s survival when the aliens take over the world. It is gripping and I loved the twist near the end! I can’t wait to read the next instalment!

3.5 stars-JACK PALMER: A NEW ORDER is the first instalment in Dan Batchelor’s young adult ,sci-fi series focusing on the invasion of Earth by an extraterrestrial race.

Told from first person perspective (Jack Palmer) A NEW ORDER follows in the aftermath of the invasion of Earth by an alien race. A few weeks earlier, NASA made contact with an alien species, and in the interim prepared for their introduction to the human world but all did not go according to plan, and as only humans will do, appeared to have destroyed any possibility of a peaceful cohabitation. Resisters were eliminated, the survivors were enslaved and imprisoned, and the people of Earth find themselves working for a species they know nothing about. Three years later, one of Jack’s friends goes missing and is presumed dead, and the now eighteen year old Jack Palmer finds himself the confident of one of the Elders, a being who is willing to reveal all, with the help of our story line hero.

The world building focuses on the invasion of Earth by a species who are determined to rule absolutely. From a peaceful introduction to a potential for war, humanity is about to find themselves enslaved by an alien civilization who are resolute and single-minded in their need to take control.

The secondary and supporting characters include several alien beings who have all assigned themselves human names. We are introduced to several of Jack Palmer’s family members and school friends, Michael Anderson, and alien commander Dr. Lewis.

JACK PALMER: A NEW ORDER is a young adult sci-fi story line about power and control, betrayal and vengeance. The premise is interesting and entertaining but reads like a middle-grade story with childlike characters, language and text. The characters are numerous as the remaining humans are ordered to rebuild a world that is no longer their own. JACK PALMER: A NEW ORDER ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

'Jack Palmer had seen the movies: when aliens invade, humans will come together to save the world.'

Unfortunately for Jack, when a superior alien race decide to invade earth, it seems the films are wrong: cowed by their brutally dispassionate taskmasters, whose punishment for every infarction, however minor, is instant death, most humans rapidly learn to submit to their new masters. But why, wonders Jack, did this happen?

-- What's it about? --

As the title suggests, although the intentions of the visiting aliens are initially unclear, their arrival ultimately changes life on earth almost beyond recognition, establishing 'a new order'. Jack and his family are survivors in a world where a strange new normal has been established and there seems no hope of any rebellion.

After an initially calm start (the announcement that aliens have made contact is made in a school assembly and the students are told that lessons will continue after a slightly extended lunchbreak!) the tension escalates until a shocking event leads to dramatic consequences.

-- What's it like? --

Enjoyably dramatic. Light on world building, with details revealed as required. Ultimately satisfying, despite the lack of resolution.

Batchelor focuses on daily life and Jack's feelings, which are simply expressed and contrast effectively with those of his friends. The plot developed in an exciting way and I enjoyed the twists, especially the epilogue (which did exactly what I hoped it might!)

Although this storyline definitely sets the main character, Jack Palmer, up for starring in a sequel, it definitely felt like a complete and satisfying storyline within itself.

-- Final thoughts --

I rarely read science fiction but enjoyed this debut novel. It's an exciting YA story, a quick, easy and satisfying read.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with a copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Thank you to the author and publisher for a copy of this book. It's out 24th June!

Jack is a normal boy, living a fairly normal life. School, friends, family, you know the drill.

But when Jack and his classmates are taken into an emergency assembly to say aliens have made contact with Earth, his world is shaken. But only by a little bit... To begin with that is. Are the stories true? Is this all a bit of nothing?

But then the stories become reality and an alien visits Earth. Life for Jack, his friends, his family, the rest of humanity, become far from normal.

This was a fantastic young adult science fiction novel. It starts off allowing us to really see Jack's very normal life. He's a typical boy getting through school, laughing with his friends, going home to his parents and sister. The slow unease of the aliens contacting Earth and then visiting was done really well. The author really does a brilliant job of building up the suspense and letting us get an erie sense of everything about to be thrown upside down. When this does happen, (no spoilers here!), it's shocking! The writing is so vivid, it felt like I watched a movie. I even gasped at one point and ending up thinking about it when I went to bed.

Jack doesn't have any choice but to grow up and the story furthers into him learning more about Earth, what's beyond Earth, and many more exciting and dangerous secrets about how all this happened!

This was a fantastic introduction to what I believe will be a series of books. I recommend it to science fiction fans of all ages. Especially for those who want a taste of the genre. This book isn't too complex and flows nicely so we can keep track of what is going on without too much heavy detail!

I kindly received the ARC copy of Jack Palmer: A New Order from Dan Batchelor and @cranthorpemillner .

Release Date: 24th June 2025

This is a YA Sci-fi Novel that focuses around the main character; a 15 year old boy called Jack, as his life gets thrown into turmoil when Earth is taken over by an Alien species.

I will start by saying it’s not my usual genre, and I don’t believe I am the target demographic. However, I did enjoy this book, as the premise of the story is so intriguing and I really enjoyed how the author set the stage for what I’m sure will be a great series of stories..

I felt the pacing was a little off for me personally, with some areas feeling more drawn out and overly repetitive and other areas feeling more rushed with not enough detail.

There also isn’t a lot of character development, except for the main protagonist, and I didn’t feel overly connected to anyone except Jack, but did still enjoy his chemistry with the other characters throughout.

The author builds up the suspense slowly at the beginning, which really helps to add tension into the story. I also liked how the world was set up pre and post invasion, as you really got an insight into how their lives were impacted. Everything was explained in a way that you weren’t left questioning anything.

The world building was descriptive and the story was simple but not overly predictable, which made it an interesting read. I also like the balance between the darker elements and the humour. As this is the beginning of a series, the pacing will likely pick up as the story progresses.

Overall, an intriguing and well thought out story, that I think would be a great introduction for young adults getting into the genre.

an alien invasion, loss, grief and a new order that affects planet earth…

jack palmer and his friends are informed during an urgent assembly meeting during school hours about alien’s making contact with earth through NASA. causing uproar, excitement and uncertainty. with emotions running high, the alien’s plan to visit earth but promise no harm… but are their intentions as pure as they claim?👀

this book strays from my usual genres but i’m always willing to try something new. this was my first sci-fi read and i actually really enjoyed it! i read this in one sitting, needing to know how things would play out. with unexpected twists, i was kept engaged and on the edge of my seat.
the storyline was easy to follow, intriguing & thought provoking.

Q: how would you react if alien’s planned to invade earth? would you be curious? excited? scared?…💭

•⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

*dan reached out to me asking if i’d be willing to read his debut novel. explaining that he is a teacher with dyslexia wanting to prove to his students that anything is possible regardless of the struggles you may face during the process- i found this extremely heartwarming & it speaks volumes on his passion for helping his students achieve their goals!
thank you for the opportunity to read your book, it’s been an absolute pleasure! congratulations!🥰*

I was kindly gifted an E-Book for A New Order by Dan Batchelor in return for an honest review. Full disclosure, this wouldn’t have been something I’d be immediately drawn to, but I went into the book with an open mind, and I’m glad I did. This was a really enjoyable read for me. We get a unique POV of the story unfolding. Every book surrounding aliens I’ve read before usually have the POV of someone in power, or the 3rd person which takes away from the story for me. It was so refreshing to get the POV of a teenager, living a normal life before the aliens come to Earth. It gave a refreshing perspective on the events unfolding within the novel.

The main thing I loved about the story is that I could not guess what was going to happen, which is very rare. The twists were twisting, to a point where I stayed up till 2am purely so I could finish it in one sitting. All I can say about the ending is that I NEED to know what happens next, I was left hanging in the best way possible.

Even if you are not an avid Sci-Fi reader, I would encourage you to give it a go as its not that Sci-Fi heavy if that even makes sense. I found it to be more story driven, more gripping and more enjoyable than I thought it would be when I opened the first page. Looking forward to seeing what Dan writes next, another 5/5 read for me!

Thank you so much to Dan, and to Becca from @cranthorpemillner for sending me a digital ARC of this debut. I have recently fallen down a dystopian/AI/ Sci-Fi hole recently and this one was a brilliant addition to my repertoire.

This story follows our MMC, Jack, a young schoolboy who, whilst in school, is taken into an emergency assembly to be told that NASA have made contact with another life form, who call themselves The Elders.

In the upcoming weeks more contact is made and then finally the Alien species visit Earth and hold a live worldwide television broadcast to introduce themselves.
Following events that take place on that night, the alien species have no choice but to invade Earth and take control of the human population. Overnight homes are destroyed, money becomes obselete and there is no higher governing power or army, the humans are slave to the Elders. Is there any way to take back their old life?

This YA sci-fi was brilliantly told from Jack's POV and showed us just how quickly his life went from normal - just a kid going to school and hanging with friends and family, to turned upsidedown within seconds.

Dan did a great job of creating suspence between first contact and first visit and I found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to find out just who The Elder's were and waiting for everything to kick off!

The way in which this story was told was not unlike watching a movie, i could see this play out so prescisley and just didnt want it to end.

This story was suspensful, exciting, the plot twists were so unexpected, I even shed a tear toward the end.

This is a fantastic start to what I am sure will be a great series of books and a perfect gateway to the sci-fi genre for those who havent explored yet!! A must read.

4.5⭐️ (i only wish it had been longer!!)

A New Order, a fantastic start to an exciting Sci-fi series!

In an emergency assembly at school, Jack Palmer and his classmates are told that NASA has made contact with a new alien species—The Elders. No one quite knows what to think at first. It all sounds a little too wild to be real. Then aliens arrive, promising peace, but things quickly spiral. Society as Jack knows it is turned upside down overnight—suddenly money means nothing, governments collapse, and life under alien control begins.

This book hooked me so fast. This author did a great job moving from scene to scene, I could picture everything so vividly and found myself flying through the chapters needing to know what would happen next. The suspense builds in such a smart way, and once things kick off, the twists keep coming. I loved how funny and sharp the dialogue was throughout; it balanced the darker moments really well and kept me totally engaged. Plus, the writing style is super accessible—perfect for any reader looking to dip into sci-fi without getting bogged down in heavy detail.

A fantastic start this series and I look forward to the next ones! Definitely recommend if you’re looking for an edge-of-your-seat YA sci-fi that’s easy to devour.

Thanks to the author for an advanced copy of this one!

This is a great quick and easy sci fi read that both adults and young adults can enjoy. The story follows Jack Palmer at first a 15 year old boy when his whole world (and everyone else’s!) on Earth changes, it hops through the years as Jack and those around him try to survive in this new world, this new order of life. But if given the chance to change it all back and take a risk to do so will Jack take that step?

A really nice flowing read that moves so effortlessly. You warm to the characters you are meant and not to the ones you aren’t! I really liked Jack’s mum, as I really relate to her as a mum myself. She is so grounded and wise, the bond Jack and his mum have is lovely. Quiet but strong.
It’s very clever and also slightly scary to life of Covid times it reminds me of all the restrictions and life in the new order is similar but worse!

Having read it I would also be happy for my 10,12 and 13 year olds to read them as nothing really inappropriate (the ‘worst’ I remember reading was the word a*%hole 🤣, and no hanky panky!)

It left on a real cliff hanger, although I predicted it, the ending was brilliant and I would guess leads brilliantly to a book 2?

I am looking forward to seeing how things work out for Jack and the others in future books.

It was my first ever book with Aliens in, and I was surprised how much I really enjoyed it. So much so I dropped the author a message on the ole IG insisting to know that he's at least writing the second one 😅

It starts off slow as we get to know some of the characters, but then bam, before you know it, you're in the midst of the unknown. Did I say this book was seriously good??

I loved Jack and his friendship group. They were all so different in personalities, but this meant they really complimented each other, especially when ya know the thing happens [ can't tell you its a secret ]. Also, there's a part where Jack is with his sister, and although he has no clue what's going to happen, he's super sweet and reassuring. Cute!!

Cliffhanger!!!! Yes, that's the ending like the biggest cliffhanger I've read in a long time, so to say im eager to read book 2 is an understatement. I'll be keeping these beady eyes peeled for updates.

Anyways, alien and fantasy lovers.. go get yourself a copy of this book. I promise you won't regret it.

Thank you to the author for reaching out and to Cranthropemillner for sending me a digital ARC.

When the author first approached me to ask whether I would read his debut book I actually declined. I didn’t think reading about aliens was for me and I don’t normally read sci-fi. However, I have been more than pleasantly surprised by this book

Jack Palmer: A New Order is a great teenage/new adult novel that is about aliens, but otherwise very believable. I was actually stunned at how plausible it all sounded! We follow 15-year old Jack through his very normal life that suddenly my gets disrupted by the message that an alternative life form has contacted NASA, and from then on normal life forw

The main character could have been a bit more multilayered and some parts I would have liked to know a bit more about. But there was a lot of kindness about the main character and it had some lovely messages in there. It’s quite a gentle read and very accessible whilst also dealing with a few serious issues such as conflict, grief, violence, humanity’s impact on the planet.

There is a big cliffhanger at the end, so some more installations are expected!
I enjoyed reading the acknowledgments section at the end.

Can you imagine being 15 years old, sitting in an emergency school assembly, and being told that aliens have contacted Earth 🌍 — then being told to just carry on with your day as normal?

The date was the 6th of March, a day that would forever be known as Alien Day.

Planet Earth has existed for 4.5 billion years.
Humans have only been the apex species for 200,000 of those years…
And that is all about to change.

Jack Palmer has seen the movies. When aliens arrive, humans are supposed to unite and save the world. But when an alien species delivers a message saying humanity is worthy of knowing the secrets beyond their own star, an event meant to make history only changes it forever.

Questions are raised instead of answered, and one question won’t leave Jack’s mind: why did this happen?

This is a young adult sci-fi book, coming in at 211 pages, and it absolutely delivers. Friendship, family, mystery, and aliens — it has it all.
The writing style is clear, engaging, and easy to follow, making it a fast-paced read while still giving you plenty to think about. The pacing works perfectly for a YA audience and keeps the story moving without feeling rushed.

Jack Palmer: A New Order — Dan Batchelor

This was such an easy, engaging sci-fi read that I flew through it far quicker than I expected. Written for a young adult audience, the story has a really accessible style that makes it perfect if you enjoy fast-paced plots without lots of heavy science jargon.

The premise — aliens making contact with Earth and humanity being forced to confront the unknown — immediately pulled me in. There’s a strong sense of mystery running throughout the book, particularly around what is really happening and why, which kept me turning the pages. I also liked that the story balances action with bigger questions about humanity, trust, and our place in the universe.

Jack is a relatable main character, and the pacing makes this a great choice for readers who want something gripping but not overly complicated. It has that cinematic feel that would translate brilliantly to screen.

Overall, this is a fun, accessible YA sci-fi adventure that would be perfect for teens or adults looking for a quick, entertaining escape into a world of aliens and interstellar secrets.

Jack Palmer: A New Order is a young adult ( or I'd say even adults looking for something on the lighter side of Sci-fi ) / Dystopian novel, told from the perspective of teenage Jack, in which Earth receives an Alien message, advising that they intend to share their secrets with humanity, which will bring the Aliens and Humans closer together.

But on the day that the secrets are due to be televised to the world, not all goes to plan, and everything changes.

Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up to find out.

So all in all, this was a fresh, entertaining read with a well balanced storyline and believable characters that feel real.

Our main character, Jack, is likeable, bright and kind.

At it's heart, the story covers some important and relevant issues, such as humanities impact on the planet, conflict and anguish, among others. But it's also a tale of hope and redemption.

At the end is quite the cliffhanger, which hopefully sets up great for a second installment.

5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

Jack Palmer: A New Order by Dan Batchelor is a gripping, imaginative read that had me hooked from start to finish. The protagonist, Jack, is incredibly likeable — relatable, funny, and easy to root for — which made the emotional highs and lows of the story hit even harder.
The world-building is top-notch. Batchelor crafts a scenario that really gets you thinking: what would life be like if aliens invaded? It’s not just action and spectacle — there’s real depth here, especially in the emotional scenes, like the powerful moment between Jack and his mum, which was written with sensitivity and care.
The plot is well-paced and full of twists that feel earned rather than forced, helping to keep the narrative moving while deepening the stakes. It’s clear this book lays strong foundations for a sequel (or more), and I’m genuinely excited to see where the story goes next.
Highly recommended for fans of sci-fi with heart, or as a great introduction to the genre for newer readers.

This was a creative young adult sci-fi exploring a teens perspective on the discovery of aliens and what it means for planet earth.
It follows Jack's pov in a believable way as his normal life changes instantly with news of aliens making contact, and he discusses it with his friends and family as they wait for the unveiling of the alien visitors and their intentions.
As events escalate the story tackles conflict, grief, hostility, survival, and adapting to life changing events. There is a good balance of suspense, intrigue and danger, and seeing Jack question things.
I enjoyed Jack's brotherly bond with Michael, and his desire to help others.
It's a contemplative read on alien invasions, hostile intentions, secrecy, resistance, and humanity, and the ending leaves it open for more to come.

So first I want to congratulate Dan Batchelor on his debut novel and thank him for reaching out and giving me an ARC.

I will say this was not my favorite genre to begin with but I did enjoy the book in the end and want to know what happens next & will read the next one so I think that says a lot.

As for the story, it starts with jack at 15 years old and there’s an alien invasion. He loses family members, doesn’t know where his friends are..It’s very hard for him at first. But then he got accustomed to the new order and just continued to do life. Not live. It was pretty fast paced but I wish the book was longer. I wish there wouldve been more character development as well as plot twists.

It was not my favorite read, but again it’s not my favorite genre. I still gave it a 2.5 ⭐️

ARC: Now Available
Thank you to Dan for reaching out with a copy for his debut

The book follows Jack Palmer, a 15 year old schoolboy who is fascinated with the rest of the world by the announcement by NASA that an alien species has made contact with Earth. What begins as a peaceful interaction soon turns on itself.

The first third or so was a little slow build but after that the plot picked up the pace. I found it to be a quick and enjoyable read.

Marketed as YA and reada little younger for me. It was light on world-building and explanation on the speciesso suited for younger readers and a good introduction to sci-fi, which leads you onto the next book in the series nicely.

Thank you to Dan Batchelor and Cranthorpe Millner publishers for a digital ARC of this book.

4 stars.

As a fan of sci-fi, I actually haven’t stepped into the sub-genre of aliens before so I wasn’t really sure what to expect of this novel, but this was very enjoyable!

It took me a while to really get into the story, but by chapter 10 I was hooked! With unexpected plot twists and new developments, I found it difficult to put the book down and read it across one day.

The language felt a little simplified but I think it’s perfect for a young adult audience. A strong start to what I think will be an interesting and exciting series.

Congratulations to Dan on his debut novel!

What a great little storyline! I enjoyed following Jack on the start of this crazy live changing experience, it even got me thinking what I would do if earth was visited by other beings.. or invaded.. would I fight back, accept being taken over or run and hide? I genuinely don't think I would know unless I was in that situation..

I love (and hate) the way it ended as its made me crave for more! what happens next in Jack's outer worldly adventure. can he save earth and possibly other beings too?

Also I like Dr Lewis and feel he can be trusted.. would also like to know what their true form is...

I found this novel actually chilling somehow and although science fiction, I found so many parallels with human history, which made me reflect.

It’s difficult to write a review about this book without spoilers, but I’ll try. First of all, it’s full of surprises and although the action happening is not boisterous and flashing, its subtle delivery is what makes it effective. The events unfolding in this novel are literally out of this world (pun intended lol), but for different reasons that you might expect.

I found this story to be partly a character study of humanity and our reactions towards forced change, and how these differ depending on the situation we are in at that moment. The plot allows the author to explore how humans are just really driven by their basic instincts and comforts, when stripped by all the infrastructure be it sociological, political, historical and actual.

But as always, all living beings can surprise us both positively and negatively, and Jack Palmer is at the centre of it all! I’m so eager to continue this story as not only we’re left with a cliffhanger, but the epilogue revealed such a twist!!

Thank you to the author and Cranthorpe Millner Publishers for a copy and this is my honest opinion.

What an intriguing book!

The story follows Jack, a young boy whose life totally changes when Aliens make contact...

This is a great debut and is a great Young Adult and I think it is perfect for the younger end of the target audience as I think those in that bracket would find it highly relatable!

The characters are great and believable and because of this, I feel like this is they type of a book a teen who isn't really into books, would be encouraged to read!

The story is intriguing, if a little creepy at times with the Aliens and given how the story ends... I really hope that there is a Book 2 in the making 👀.

A great YA book and debut novel!

Not really into Sci fi but Jack Palmer really has something special about it- I loved it- with first person perspective you really feel the emotions of the characters all rooted with the deep themes of control and the reactions of humanity. It felt realistic, relatable, and somewhat eerie. It has reignited my love of reading.

The more I read, the more I was hooked. With a twists that will shock you, I am anticipantly waited for the next installment (hopefully it won't be too long away). If you think you're not normally into Sci fi I would really give this book a read, I am definitely a Sci Fi convert and would highly recommend.

The best book I've read in a long time!

Picked up this gem after noticing a bit of hype surrounding it from a few book reviewers online. Very glad I did. Such a thoughtful and refreshing take on a classic sci-fi tale of alien contact.

The characters are well rounded and suited to what I would consider a teen fiction audience. However, that is not to say a well read 9 year or adult won't enjoy.

Each chapter is crafted so that bread crumbs of knowledge are carefully scattered for the audience to make well informed exciting predictions throughout the novel.

I certainly will be reading this to my year 5 class in September! A fantastic page turner that won't disappoint!

A quick and easy read. Read it in a matter of hours. I was engaged and kept guessing what would happen next throughout the book. I liked the characters, especially Jack and Dave. Jack was quite a strong and resilient character. He adapted quickly even though he didn't like it and made a decision that was best for him and his kind without doubt. The plot was different from most scifi novels in regards to aliens and the twist that Dr. Lewis reveals was quite a shock. I can't believe it ended like that, though. I need to know what happens next.

I haven’t read YA science fiction in a while and this story was a perfect way to get back into the genre. The pacing and the world building was very well done and I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters. This was a very fun and interesting alien invasion story and I really loved the twist and am very excited for the next story in this series. Would highly recommend if you enjoy science fiction adventure stories with relatable heroes. Thank you to Dan Batchelor for the ARC of this story.

This is not my usual kind of book but I really enjoyed it. It’s quick paced and grips you from the start.
A New Order is a great debut YA novel.

The book follows 15year old Jack and his POV when news of alien life is announced. Something that starts off as exciting as the world prepares to see the first alien known to humankind. But things quickly take a turn and life as they know it is changed forever.

I can’t really say more than that because of spoilers, but the twist?? I’m excited for the next book, Jack has a lot to deal with!
