Completed with the help of the San Diego Union-Tribune and their expansive archive of Tony Gwynn photos, this book is as beautifully packaged and written. Tony Gwynn had a Hall of Fame career with the San Diego Padres, went on to coach San Diego State baseball squad, and was probably the most popular citizen to call San Diego home. The book is packed with wonderful stories from Tony Gwynn's friends, teammates, and colleagues celebrating an amazing life. The dust jacket converts into a colorful 28 x 22 poster.
A collection of memories of Tony Gwynn by /from people who knew him best: family, friends, teammates, etc. It was heartwarming to read the many testaments to the greatness and down to earthness of this legendary San Diego Padre who left this world way too early.
I'm thankful that my teammate Vero gave me this. Interviews about Tony that were accumulated after his passing and a few direct ones he gave over the years. Rich Wolfe did a tremendous job. I still miss Tony.
Nice, wholesome book on Mr. Padre but not what I expected. I thought this was going to be written more like a biography but it ended up being a collection of memories from people who interacted with Tony Gwynn- childhood friends, players, coaches, staff members, fans, etc.
I imagine this book as all of Tony’s friends and family members sitting around a campfire sharing stories and reminiscing about him. Needless to say, Tony had a great impact on people, the city of San Diego, and the game of baseball. Many of the stories in this book served as a great way for me to reminisce about Tony’s impact on my childhood, as I grew up watching the Padres. The book also added other unique perspectives on Tony’s life, many of which I wasn’t aware of prior to reading this.
There is a lot of repetition in this book but in this case, it wasn’t a bad thing. Whether it was his work ethic or infectious laugh, the consistency to which many people describe Mr. Padre is a true testimony to how he treated everyone the same regardless of what their background was.
RIP Tony Gwynn. Thank you for the childhood memories, you will always be missed.
This rating is all for Tony Gwynn. The stories are phenomenal. As a youngster, I became a Padres fan in 1984 when SD faced the Cubs for the NL title and we all wore "Cub-buster" T-shirts as a spinoff of the Ghostbusters movie. Tony Gwynn was a freaking hero - that year and for years to come. Often underappreciated, the stories in this book reveal a hard-working, talented, honorable man. The hero we all want.
Teammates, coaches, friends, and fans reminisce about the late, great Tony Gwynn. Some of the stories will be familiar to readers; others not heard before. Unfortunately, for a man like Tony who stressed hard work and achieved greatness, this book seemed to be sloppily thrown together simply to profit from his recent passing.
Poorly written, and at times, rambling and repetitive. The text is peppered with numerous, bizarre, random factoids (many of which have absolutely NOTHING to do with Gwynn!). Not only were they distracting, but they seemed like someone was rudely interrupting a conversation between two people.
Fans of Tony Gwynn will enjoy reading these stories about him. I just wish this project had been better thought out, and left in more capable hands. Tony deserved better.
Good collection of TGwynn's remembrances from teammates, fans, sports writers and others. Mostly recaps of what I already knew (being a big Tony fan) but does have some new stories and tales, some of which brought a tear to my eyes as Tony left us way too early and he had an impact on so many people.
