She came with a baby and baggage. He showed up with his heart.
Phileigh Read has spent her entire life playing it safe, until one slip up with a client leaves her pregnant and staring down single motherhood. Phileigh’s focus should be on protecting her peace, building her brand, and preparing for the arrival of her child. But one last night out leads her into the arms of Super Bowl MVP Kellon “KB” Barnes, and the rest is history.
Kellon Barnes has spent years trying to outrun the guilt of his past. But something about Phileigh makes him want to stand still. She’s not part of his playbook, but she might be the peace he didn’t know he needed.
Love, like football, is all about timing, but sometimes, the best things in life just may come from an Unexpected Pass.

Started off great, had my attention until about 60% and then I lost interest. Felt like the story was trying too many different plots in less than 300 pages.
So the quick fixes of complicated family drama, made the resolution too fictional. Which really undermined all that good writing in the beginning.
Also- saying the baby had the dimples of a man, who is not his biological father is a choice. Like the FMC stresses the paternity of this child throughout the book. So reading that line took me out… like ma’am… how?! Why?
That’s when I knew this story had gone off the deep end.
🎧 Unexpected Pass by A. Blossom — He Fell First, He Fell Hard, and I Fell Right Along With Him 💥
📖 Read it. Listened to it. Lived it. I devoured Unexpected Pass by A. Blossom on Kindle Unlimited while listening to the audiobook.....and let me tell you, the experience was next-level immersive
Tropes You Need to Know: - 💘 He Falls First — and he falls loud, proud, and without hesitation - 👩🔧 Plus-Size FMC — Phileigh (yes, spelled P-H-I-L-E-I-G-H) is a barber with grit, grace, and a guarded heart - 🤰 Pregnant and Still Desired — because love doesn’t wait for perfect timing - 🧠 Emotional Healing — both leads are a little broken, but together they find peace - 🏈 Sports Romance Vibes — he’s a Super Bowl MVP, but she’s the real win
What Hit Me Right in the Feels: Phileigh’s story is raw, real, and beautifully messy. She’s pregnant by someone who ghosts her, but instead of spiraling, she meets Kellon Barnes a man who sees her, chooses her, and loves her out loud. He doesn’t care about her past. He cares that she’s his peace. And that? That’s the kind of love we deserve to see more of.
Narration & Pacing: Narrated by Elyce Anthony and Winston James, this audiobook clocks in at just over 6 hours and I swear it felt like 30 minutes. The pacing is chef’s kiss, and I was genuinely sad when it ended. It’s short, but it packs a punch.
Trigger Warnings: There’s trauma woven into the story, so protect your mental health and check the warnings. But if you’re in a place to receive it, this book will give.
Final Verdict: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This one’s going on the top shelf the sacred spot where only the most emotionally earned, beautifully written stories live. And yes, I’m buying the physical copy even though I already devoured the audiobook.
I received an advanced copy of the audiobook through netgalley and I'm leaving this review voluntarily
Kellon was everything I didn’t know I needed! From the absolute beginning I was engulfed in Kellon & Phileigh’s story. This sports romance brought all the feels with the drama that unfolded. Extremely lovable main characters that you will ride hard for & truly want to win! Seeing a plus sized woman loved right and getting everything she deserved was a breath of fresh air.
I loved how Phileigh was working toward her own success prior to meeting Kellon! Although his connections sped things along, I have no doubt that she would have been successful with or without him.
And KELLON! This man was simply perfect in every way. I literally cannot think of a single thing to critique him on, A. Blossom did a phenomenal job creating the ultimate book boyfriend!
The audiobook narration was superb! Elyce Anthony & Winston James absolutely ate down with these characters. They brought magic to Kellon & Phileigh’s stories! Overall a great read & definitely recommend the audiobook. Thank you Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for an advanced listening copy. All opinions are my own.
honestly… it was okay. I gave it three stars. The premise hooked me, I really wanted to see how this man was going to navigate dating a pregnant woman. It’s not something you see often in romance, so I was like “okay, let’s see where this goes.”
But the way it played out? He brushed it off so fast it almost felt unrealistic. He was too calm, too perfect, and at some point he started giving “saviour complex” energy. I like flawed characters because they feel human, and after he kept acting like the most patient, understanding man on earth, it just got a bit boring.
The story wasn’t terrible, it kept me reading but the lack of depth made it feel flat after a while.
Soooo good! Kellon did not play about Phileigh. He knew what he wanted from the beginning and applied that pressure!! I was so happy for Phileigh. My girl got everything she deserved and then some. Everybody that played in her face got what they deserved too lol. Highly recommend this one. A.Blossom don’t miss.
tropes you’ll find in this book: - sports romance - bbw / plus size representation - football player mmc / barber fmc - secret babies - found family / chosen family - surprise love - viral drama - he falls first - step daddy - second chance at love
Going into this book, I had so many thoughts at how this book was going to go. i’ve seen so many recommendations on my tik tok and instagram about this book being a swoon-worthy, jaw-dropping, steamy book with lots of fluff and warmth. i was sold immediately!
Phileigh Read is a woman with child that not only came from a football player but an ENGAGED football player (who’s a two-timing piece of shit). She’s wrecking herself over what to do for the next nine months as a single mother—a night out would do the trick right? WRONG. Ditched and lost, she sat at the bottom at the stairwell trying to avoid the crowd. Then, in walks football mvp super bowl champion, Kellon Barnes to the rescue!
KELLON BARNES IS THE FOOTBALL MVP AND FATHER MVP. He is the type of man that would love and protect you until the end of time! the way he gravitated towards Phileigh and took her on a whirlwind romantic day out to Disney World was too cute. Despite a few bumps along the road, he’s not giving up without a fight to prove to her he’s just what she needs in her life to prevail.
Their relationship journey is one of the books—he takes her baby as his own and shows her the true meaning of partnership when times get hard. Even when the masses tries to rip them apart (said baby daddy and resentful ex), they only focus on their bulging love thats hot and steamy! She may be pregnant but that thang still works hunny 😉
From whirlwind romance to chasing down the girl of his dreams, unexpected pass is the book for the lovers out there who believes that anything is possible and love never stops even with child.
One time for the thick chics 🙌🏾💖 Phileigh was literally having the worst, what she thought was- week of her life… and her forever was sat right beside her, ready to claim what’s his. I love that for her. 🥹
Such a great story—sweet, bold, and exactly the energy we all deserve. 4.5 ⭐️ but we round up round here!
Ok I’d been putting this one off until closer to football season and it was worth the wait. This was Instalove done right because Kellon saw Phileigh and knew immediately. Now it took my girl a little longer to get on board, and while I was looking at her crazy, I understood her hesitation. I do wish we leaned a little more into the Reggie of it all, I just wanted a little more build up to that beat down but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment. Definitely check this one out!
I rolled my eyes through this entire book and flat out skimmed the ending. It just felt like pure fantasy, without any kind of realism. Everything was just so perfect that there was zero tension which made the story feel like I was fighting my way through glitter. From the very first page, Phileigh (don't even get me started on the whole Philly cheese nonsense) says 'Reggie wasn't my boyfriend'...three lines later...'We'd made a baby together in a serious relationship.' Huh?? How do those two things go together? Phileigh was cool. At least she tried to make Kellon question whether the relationship was what he really wanted and he absolutely did. Met her, and was willing to fully commit, baby and all in a couple weeks. His overprotective mother went from 'Harpo, who dis woman?' to 'Girl, I got his black card, you better spend this money' faster than you can say 'What the hell, what the helly??' With a little more grit, and everyone not just floating on sunshine and unicorn rainbows, this would have been a good story. But it's so cheesy that it goes past a feel-good story to being hokey and unrealistic. Why would having sex harm the baby at 3mths pregnant that we needed a whole production for a doctor's visit for clearance? 20K for a haircut to a woman he just met. Ummmkk. By the time we got to them having a 6mth old baby crawl around on a red carpet at a Super Bowl event (who does that???) and the baby having 'Kellon's dimples', despite not being his biological child I was extremely happy to see the end of this book.
To be clear, I love warm, 'curl up with a mug of hot chocolate' feel good stories. I love black love. I love seeing black women loved well. I love seeing plus sized women win. I love black women living a soft life, but goodness. Yes, some men fall in love and know what they want very quickly. Yes, men get with women who are pregnant with another man's child, yes, men drop lots of money on women. It's the combination of throwing everything but the kitchen sink into this story that didn't work for me.
I think the author is talented but, truly, the only time I wasn't groaning and rolling my eyes was when Kellon told Reggie off. Then the author ruined the moment by having him and Lolo do what they did. It just felt like we went back to the story feeling immature. Be for real, please. And I'm all about the 'get back' but it didn't fit here. Or it didn't fit the way it was written because the rest of the story is all cinnabuns and powdered sugar.
Anyhoo, two stars because I did force myself to finish. It took me 5 days to finish what should have been a one-sitting read. I was torn between being annoyed and intrigued lol.
A+ on the cover though. I stay getting hoodwinked by these covers!
7/25/25- First read 3.5 ⭐️ Cute enough sports romance with very lovable MMC.
9/19/25- Audiobook ARC
While attending a Super Bowl afterparty with one dude and pregnant by another, Phileigh meets Super Bowl MVP Kellon Barnes. He later decides that not only is she his woman but he’s also her baby’s dad. This is not up for discussion! She tried to leave him but he did break into her house to talk some sense into you. 🤣 Kellon was not playing about his Phileigh Cheese!
We love a protective, slightly unhinged MMC that chooses to be the dad that stepped up! Unexpected Pass gives you all the cute you want in a sports romance but also sprinkles in a little spice, some BD drama, and 2 cute introverts finding love and making a family.
Unfortunately, the female narrator sounds like your great aunt. She is not believable as the young sexy barber attracting NFL Players.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this audiobook ARC.
Talk about RICH IN LOVE !!!! Phileigh deserved ever that came her way, being a genuine soul got to the love of her life , ion know it really gave me love at first vibes 🥰. Kellon stepping to be the real dad is real tea ok ,I love how he allowed Phileigh an their son to heal his pain. I literally giggled and rubbed my feet together while read this book ! So yea READ IT Bookies !!!!
This was an incredibly sweet love story. I'm so glad everything worked out the way it did. I was worried about those parents for a hot minute, but overall, they added a great element to the story.
I liked that Kellon stepped up and didn’t play about Phileigh (ugly name, btw), but overall, this was just okay. The parental drama on both sides felt like filler if it wasn’t going to be explored with real depth, it should’ve been cut. Phil’s issues with her parents were tossed in like parsley there for garnish, but not doing much.
The villains got what they deserved, sure, but the jump from “abort the baby” to “I’ma kill you” was wild and didn’t flow naturally at all. It felt like a plot twist just for shock value. Reggie being so pressed because Kellon “got the girl” didn’t really land either, especially since he and his fiancée were the ones who dragged the whole mess on the internet in first place. Like… how did we even get here? No one would know if twitter fingers one and two would just be quiet.
This was such a cute, sweet read!!! I was literally smiling from ear to ear from the very beginning 🥰!!
Kellon was such a sweetheart & the perfect gentleman!!! The way treated Phileigh from the very first time they met was everything!!!! He was loving, reassured her when she got in her own head & was everything you could possible want in a man!! He saw what he wanted & went after it & he didn’t care what baggage came with her he was locked in!!! HE’S A GOOD MAN SAVANNAH 😂🥰!!!
This was a super light read that gave me all the feels 🥺
sports romances are quickly becoming one of my favs!!
The MMC didn't play when it came to the FMC. Kellon fell in love with Phileigh instantly. She need just a tad bit more convincing due to her doubting that he could actually love her. Read this book if you want tofind out what happens when the girl finally gets a good one.
3.5⭐️🌶️🌶️ All I can say is KELLON is one hell of a man. Not only did he step up and take care of somebody else’s responsibilities, but he made it known to PHILEIGH and the world. One man’s trash is obviously his treasure. I felt like the plot was OK because it went with the storyline. I personally don’t get the Insta love trope, but it was written very well.
Thank you NetGalley, Dreamscape Media and author A. Blossom for my ALC of Unexpected Pass. Narrated by: Elyce Anthony and Winston James. Both narrators did an amazing job. Think this was my first time hearing Elyce Anthony. Will have to see what else she has done and Winston always knocks it out the park.
The story takes off right away and i love when authors hit us with a big bang to grab our attention. Throughout the entire story i was definitely entertained and was talking ish. The author let it be known what healing, true love, your body your choice, and having a tribe truly means.
Loved that Phileigh is a barber and a woman that is reaching and achieving goals. Also being a woman with some extra beautiful curves that heads still turn her way. That lame man thought he was doing something talking bad about Phileigh and trying to hurt her. However, karma always wins and i love the author showed a “man” like him. Disgusting. Kellon came in as man knowing what he wanted and never letting up. Also giving the vulnerable side of him and how grieving is affecting his life. The moment with his mom was much needed. Children at any age should be able to tell their parents how they feel. The steps they took to fix it were beautiful.
Honorable mention: the best friend Lola is that girl and the cut nickname Phileigh Cheese.
I was approved to listen to an early copy of *Unexpected Pass* by @author_blossom thanks to @Dreamscape_Media and @NetGalley
This story pulled me in right away Phileigh, a woman preparing for single motherhood while chasing her dreams, collides with Super Bowl MVP Kellon “KB” Barnes, who’s running from his past. Their connection is tender, emotional, and so full of heart. 🏈❤️
I loved how this book explores love, timing, healing, and the unexpected ways life can surprise you. The narration made the story come alive, and I couldn’t stop listening.
This was such a nice palette cleansing audiobook! The drama was just enough for me to be like OOP!!! But I really enjoyed this. Insta-love isn't my favoriteeee trope, but I think for this it did work and kept me hooked. Kellens mama almost got a SHARPPPPP right hook from me, but she got it together. Reggie? He should've been taken out FO SHO cause he deserved the WORSTT. Also the nickname Philly Cheese??? SO CUTEEEEE stopppppppp lmaoooo. WAIT AND I LOVE HOW THE TITLE WAS MENTIONEDDDDDDDD! Tewwww cute
However, I wont lie the jump from get rid of the baby to attempted m*rder was KINDA sharp I can't lie. Also she got to be a Vogue?? Like there were just some sharp turns randomly taken and it was kind of wild. So get rid of all the realism you know for this one lmao.
Overall I really enjoyed this and the narrators did so great too.
This was cute!! We are following Phileigh who is pregnant and not only has the father of her child abandoned her, she then found out he was with someone else the entire time. She goes on this blind date that her mom set up.. little did she know she would meet a man who would literally sweep her off her feet.
This was a bit too fluffy for my tastes, but I love seeing a woman get loved on and treated how she should. She is also a plus size baddie which I was eating up!
I was so angry at her POS sperm donor so I was happy to see he got what he deserved!
Dual narration!
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC!
