Magnolia Hawthorne wonders about her place in this world. Does wanting to find love and settle down make her any less?
Enter Nash Whitlock, who asks her to pretend to be his fiancée in front of his dying grandfather. It doesn’t seem like a big deal until the old man has a miraculous recovery and the charade that was supposed to be only for a few minutes extends to days and weeks.
Moreover, Magnolia has to handle Nash’s inheritance-hungry family while realizing that their fake relationship could become real.
The story comes in Magnolia and Nash’s first-person POVs.
My Thoughts
I don’t remember how or when, but I am subscribed to the author’s newsletter (it happens a lot) and get some interesting updates. I’ve been meaning to read one of her books, and this seemed like a good choice. It’s a new release, and I found an ARC on Book Sirens.
The beginning note about em dashes and the non-use of AI was funny and sad. Imagine authors having to add such disclaimers for hyper enthusiastic readers. :/
The story is lighthearted despite the drama and super fun. Does it feel childish at times? Yes. Does it matter? Not really! It’s good clean fun, and I’m not going to say no to it.
The FMC is quirky, sassy, and cute. Kind-hearted and sweet, too. Pretty much like a person who spreads happy vibes wherever they go. Makes sense that people love her (and it is much more believable than everyone loving a rude 'hot mess' ).
The MMC is sweet, too, but a bit too stressed out and is still working (a slooow work-in-progress) on his communication skills in important matters. But he is loyal and dependable. The dual POV was a great idea. Not knowing his conflicting emotions would have made it really hard to root for him.
The romance is lighthearted, too, and clean with only a few kisses (in the second half). They do make a cute couple, though they would need to have some long and deep conversations. We could have gotten one of those, I guess.
Though there are some heavy themes like illness, toxic family, etc., the overall tone continues to be light and hopeful. Like you are reading a nice, happy book with a touch of sadness. I think I needed this now.
I did wonder if the FMC can bake anything other than cinnamon rolls. She makes enough of those to feed two armies, lol. I also like that she is not a (wannabe) writer. Baking is still a bit cliché, but there’s a distillery too on the list, so that’s cool.
The epilogue surprised me. Usually, the first books in the series don’t directly reveal the pairings for the subsequent books. This one does! Can’t say I minded it. But if you don’t like such surprises, I’d say read the epilogue only half.
To summarize, Miss Magnolia's in a Mash is a fast-paced, cute, and adorable read. Don’t look for anything intense; just enjoy what it offers. I love the details on the cover, especially those purple heels!
Thank you, Book Sirens and the author, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
I remember reading Play Me Once by Carina Taylor and literally laughing out loud at one scene. Like, couldn’t breathe, tears in my eyes kind of laughing. And once again, this book proves that Carina Taylor is the queen of banter and sass.
From their very first awkward meet-cute, Magnolia and Nash had me hooked. The back-and-forth between them was sooo good. I was smiling, giggling, kicking my feet… all of it. And then it spirals into a fake engagement… all to please a dying grandfather… who then magically recovers 🤣
Also, I’m a fake relationship trope girly through and through, so this was right up my alley. Watching them pretend while catching real feelings? Yeah… I ate that up. The tension, the chemistry, the little moments... it just worked.
And I have to talk about Nash’s grandpa because he was an absolute icon. Meddling grandparents will always have a special place in my heart, and he completely stole the show. His relationship with both Nash and Magnolia was just so wholesome, and I loved every second of it.
Also, fun fact: this is technically the first book in the series, even though it comes out after book two… which works perfectly for me because now I can jump straight into Charlie’s book with zero waiting. BRB, I’m already on it 🏃♀️
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT: ❤️🔥 Fake Relationship ❤️🔥 Forced Proximity ❤️🔥 Small Town ❤️🔥 Found Family ❤️🔥 Meddling Grandpa ❤️🔥 Family Drama
Miss Magnolia’s in a Mash was everything I want in a small-town romance and more. Magnolia is so relatable, soft, hopeful, and just trying to find where she belongs, and watching her get swept into Nash’s world through a fake engagement was equal parts hilarious, emotional, and completely irresistible. The fake-fiancé trope is executed perfectly here. What starts as a sweet lie quickly turns into real feelings, and the chemistry between Magnolia and Nash builds in the most natural, heart-melting way. I loved how Nash never makes Magnolia feel like her dreams are “too small”—instead, he encourages them, supports them, and makes you root for their happily-ever-after from the very beginning. The family drama, inheritance tension, and the “one lie that gets bigger and bigger” storyline added just the right amount of stakes and humor. It balanced heartfelt moments with cozy romance so beautifully that I couldn’t put it down. If you love fake dating, found family vibes, swoony heroes, and small-town charm, this book is an absolute must-read. A warm, romantic, happily-ever-after that left me smiling long after the last page. 💕
When crashing into each other literally changed the course of their lives…This closed-door, fake relationship romance was sweet, lighthearted, and so much fun to read! Magnolia has been struggling in life and love. She crashes into a stranger at work—resulting in the loss of her job but an opportunity to find love when he suddenly asks her to be his fake fiancé. Nash needed someone, anyone, to be “the one” but didn’t count on the special person that Magnolia was. The way they got to know each other, moved from a deception to true feelings, created a friendship that became a romance, supported each other when they needed it, was enduring and special. A quick heartfelt read! Thanks to the author and Booked With the Emily’s for the eARC.
This is Book 1 in the Pine Ridge Ranch series by Carina Taylor, but it was released after Book 2. That said, they are the types of books that can definitely stand alone.
Magnolia and Nash have a wacky meet cute which ultimately results in her becoming his fake fiance to fulfill his dying grandfather’s wishes. The mash-up of these two characters is a hilarious, silly, tender, and sweet concoction of all the things to love in a darling romcom.
While there are some snaps of attraction, it’s the personalities of this duo, especially the eccentric and quirky Magnolia, that deliver a sparkle to the story. I laughed and swooned my way through this entrancing tale and particularly adored the side characters–especially grandpa and the roommates.
This whimsical gift to readers is an excessively sweet and entertaining romantic comedy. I can’t wait for more of this series!
Content: mild language; mild romance
*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
“We’re kissing,” Nash says firmly as he leans down to press his lips against mine again. I sigh and lean into him again. “This time, he lifts me off the ground, and I’m reminded that this man is strong-strong. Those muscles are not just for looks—this guy can do things. He’s not even shaking, holding me while he kisses me.”
I adored Carina Taylor’s latest release Miss Magnolia’s in a Mash. From the first page to the last, I was engaged in the story and rooting for Magnolia and Nash.
Magnolia was sassy and kind and so honest. I loved how she was so comfortable in her own skin and knew what she wanted out of life. I also loved how even though she knew these things about herself, she still doubted and questioned herself. She was so real and relatable.
Nash was so kind and selfless. I loved seeing Nash interact with Magnolia, his grandpa, extended family, and friends. Each interaction gave you a bigger glimpse into his heart and what truly made him happy. I loved watching him fall for Magnolia, all the while he was trying to protect her. It was so funny at times and so frustrating at times.
Things to love: -the meet cute -fake engagement -Magnolia winning over Nash’s grandpa -Magnolia’s roommates -“protection cinnamon rolls” -small town -major family drama -friends who become family -Nash’s grandpa -Magnolia and Nash -the ending
This book was such a joy to read. I laughed and sighed and swooned throughout. The banter and chemistry between Magnolia and Nash was on point from the meet cute to the end. It was so well done. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Miss Magnolia’s in a Mash is the first book in Carina Taylor’s Pine Ridge Ranch series. It can be read as a standalone.
This was a cute fake dating romance, with a touch of quirky humour and a whole lot of heart.
When Magnolia bumps into a handsome someone on the stairs while exiting a building, she doesn't expect it to result in the loss of her job, or for the handsome stranger to ask her to be his fake fiancée and fulfill his dying grandfather's wish. When her visit causes a miraculous recovery for Nash's grandfather, he and Magnolia are forced to continue their charade, all while questioning growing feelings for each other.
I loved these characters, from Magnolia's quirky humour and sharp wit, to Nash's protectiveness and cheek. The slow-burn of them falling for each other was swoony, though there were times when I wanted them to just hurry up and admit their feelings. Grandpa Alexander was an entertaining character, and I loved Magnolia's relationship with her roommates.
Though I received an ARC of this book, I didn't start reading it until after it was published, so I read the published version on kindle unlimited. I wouldn't mention this if I were reading the unpublished ARC, but unfortunately, my reading experience was diminished by several typos and other errors that an editor and proofreader should have caught. So if this is something that matters to your reading experience, consider this fair warning.
What you'll find in this book: *fake engaged *found family *small town *family drama *meddling grandfather *slowburn *protective MMC *banter
Content warning: ill elderly relative who recovers, death of father (15 years ago) Romance level: 3/7 (kisses only)
Thanks to the author and Booked With the Emilys for the eARC.
I've had a slow reading month in April for reasons..all of which to say Carina Taylor is always a good go-to for a quick fun read. And this was quick and fun, hence the 3 stars (which is not a negative rating).
Magnolia and Nash's meet-cute happens in a stairwell following a fire evacuation at their shared office building. They share banter and mutual attraction which quickly devolves/evolves into a convenient friendship once Nash begs/hires Magnolia to be his stand-on fiancee to soothe his dying grandfather.
I felt like the book was successful in being easy to delve into (the writing was nice and easy) and light-hearted with dashes of humour.
This certainly isn't my favourite from Taylor (if you're curious I would recommend Neighbours Like That, or Rook to King). I felt like the humour didn't always land for me (subjective) and that the story felt a little choppy in sections, which undercut the romance/character development a little. For instance Nash and Magnolia are in a pseudo friendship as they continue with their fake engagement, and it felt sudden when at the halfway mark Nash wants to end the lies and arrangement, and gets genuinely frustrated when Magnolia misunderstands. That whole middle section of the book lost a bit of fluidity which took me out of the story. I'm not sure if it was a pacing or editing issue but it felt like I was missing something.
Another example would be how the book/Nash deals with his good-for-nothing relatives. They're somehow simultaneously big drivers within the story while at the same time not adding much to the story. Case in point is the loitering uncle who's around enough to cause mischief, but not enough to actually confront or have a storyline that is thoroughly resolved.
All this to say, I do feel like there could have been a stronger story here, but this was definitely not a bad way to spend a few hours.

I am currently reading and loving this sweet meet cute love story. It's also an unexpected to meet cute grandpa. I love how sweet, caring and loving both Magnolia and Nash are. I love how Nash just started caring about Magnolia the moment they met each other and what a big heart Magnolia has in general. It's like she always finds goodness in people or any given situation, no matter how nasty the people get. I enjoy the side characters, like Magnolia's housemates and, of course, Grandpa Alexander. I'm nervous about what lies ahead in regard to the rest of Nash's family and excited about how this story will wrap up.
🧁 Update Added Review 🧁 I really enjoyed reading this book. There was a part Nash hesitancy was annoying but Magnolia was so patient and all she wanted was for him to be happy. I feel like the real star here is Alexander. His banters and chemistry with Magnolia was so adorable. I'm glad the ending wasn't to crazy as I feared and everyone had a HEA.
This was okayish? I liked the plot and I love me some fake dating, but this didn't work for me. I don't think I vibed with the author's writing style. The two MCs seemed awkward around each other throughout the book and felt very young. It felt more like how teenagers would be, the maturity level was not there and it kept pulling me out of the story. There is some banter that is good, but again a large portion of the feels and conversations felt much younger that the characters are supposed to be. Thank you to the author and BookedWithTheEmilys for my ARC.
This is the first book in the Pine Ridge Ranch series, although book 2 was released before this one. It can be read as a standalone and obviously out of order. It is a kisses only contemporary romcom.
This has an adorable meet cute. Magnolia and Nash do have some endearing moments together. The plot is a bit far fetched and for some reason it seems familiar to me. I'm not sure what book it reminds me of though.
There's an ensemble of side characters that help move the story along.
I was given the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This book has such a fun and witty meet-cute between Magnolia and Nash! Loved it! Held my breath for a minute! Was laughing for many more minutes! And had butterflies for a touch! They are adorable! And the chemistry between them was wonderful! Cute and clean and full of sass and great banter!
I loved seeing more about both of these characters and their goodness and personalities! They've both been through some stuff and are trying to do good things and succeed in their career paths. But they both find themselves in a bind-or rather in a "mash"-and decide they can work together to help each other out. Unfortunately, it leads to a fake relationship and then that becomes a very tangled web! But fortunately, they get to know each other more and realize that they are both good and genuine and start to truly fall for each other!
I loved all of the ups and downs of the family dynamics! Nash's grandpa was one of my favorite characters! He had me laughing and smiling, especially with his straightforward approach towards the family members who are scheming and conniving! Oh this seriously is quite the tangled web happening! And I was all in for watching it unfold!!! Hahaha! *Smirks and rubs hands together gleefully*
If you haven't read a book by Carina Taylor, and you enjoy witty banter that will have you laughing out loud, and characters that you can connect with, I highly recommend you read her books! I've only read a few but have really loved them that I keep coming back to them!
Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses. Family feuding and drama.
I received a copy from Victory Editing NetGalley co-op, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
This storyline had potential, but main character Magnolia kept going back to her roommate to re-tell the events of the previous chapter. I quickly lost interest for that reason and others. Decided to move on. DNF
*Series or Connected Books?* part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
*Point Of View:* Magnolia & Nash

–in the beginning of the story a character’s relative is practically on their deathbed (they get better though!)
-it’s mentioned that a character’s parent passed (15 years prior)

Review:
This book was so much fun! I loved Magnolia & Nash’s meet cute and the situation they find themselves in soon after! It was great seeing them both attracted to each other but knowing next to nothing about each other while trying to fake a relationship. I loved getting to know Nash’s grandfather and how lively he was! I loved that he and Magnolia hit it off right off the bat and that she didn’t mince words when talking to him. I loved seeing Nash want to protect Magnolia from anything that could harm her, no matter if it was his family members or the rough looking guys she befriended that hung around outside her apartment building. And I loved that Magnolia didn’t really want anything from Nash, she just honestly loved providing his grandfather with the hope she would be pretending to represent. One of my favorite scenes (besides the ending) was when Magnolia’s mom got to meet Nash over the phone and he wouldn’t let Magnolia end the call!
I can’t wait to find out what will happen between Bliss & Zeke!
Summary:
Magnolia has a big heart and when she’s asked by a distraught man to pretend to be his fiance for his dying grandfather, she doesn’t think twice about accepting. She didn’t think it would last more than the day with how the old man was declining, but surprisingly he begins recovering and attributes his good health to Magnolia. Prolonging her ruse as Nash’s fiance seems like the best idea in order to keep the man on the mend and brings Magnolia into a whole new world of family drama. Not to mention she’s been slowly growing feelings for Nash despite their relationship being fake. But does he want something real with her too or will he just be letting go of her once his grandfather fully recovers?
Nash grew up outside of his money-grubbing extended family’s reach as a kid and now having to deal with them as an adult is akin to torture. He’d much rather be back home on the ranch. But with his grandfather’s declining health and Nash’s love for his grandfather at the forefront of his mind, he can’t just stand by and see him waste away around those who’d love to see his grandfather’s passing for the inheritance it’d gain them. And when his grandfather’s dying wish is to meet the fiance Nash forgot to inform him had left him, Nash can’t let him go without fulfilling it. So Nash does the unthinkable and asks a woman he just met if she’d play the part for him. And oddly enough she accepts. But when real feelings interact with their fake relationship as they extend their agreement when his grandfather miraculously starts getting better, Nash wonders if he could have found someone that truly loves him…
“His eyes are locked onto mine, and something in his eyes gives me butterflies. This is not good. Someone’s microexpressions shouldn’t have the power to make your heart skip a beat.”
When finished reading Charlie Takes a Chance, I scoured the internet to find Nash and Magnolia’s story, because I knew I NEEDED it in my life. I was so sad to find out it hadn’t been written yet. So, as you can imagine, I was beyond excited to get the chance to read it and it did not disappoint!!
Nash literally runs into Magnolia while trying to escape their office bulling when the fire alarm goes off. Layer, when Nash needs to produce his fiancée to his dying grandpa, Magnolia steps in. Little do they know she will be just what the doctor ordered and when Grandpa makes a miraculous recovery, Nash and Magnolia find their lives more intertwined than either of them planned on!
Ahhh!! I loved these two!! They had such great chemistry and fun banter! I loved Grandpa Alexander and his meddling! 😏 I loved how he called her Miss Magnolia. I loved her stress baking (since I often do the same thing!). I loved how Magnolia was down to earth and not phased by the Whitlock’s money or family drama. I loved how protective Nash was and his heart of gold. I loved their trip to Pine Ridge and the way it fit into their future. And, of course, I loved watching them fall in love and realize their feelings for each other.
Favorite quotes:
“She already means so much to me. How is that possible? We’re practically strangers. I don’t have the right to give input into her life. But I’d love nothing more than to take care of her and make her life easier for her. Especially when I’ve put her in this impossible position.”
“There’s no way I can walk away from the fake engagement without some feelings for him.”
“Your dreams are your own. And they’re all good things. If it makes you happy, then that’s good enough. If people have enough time to talk down about your life’s dreams… then it means they're not busy chasing their own.”
It all starts with a fire drill… 🚨 Magnolia and Nash literally collide on an office building fire escape and almost tumble down eight stories 😳 Instead, he steadies her, holds her hand, and she cracks jokes all the way down—an unforgettable meet-cute that sets the tone for everything that follows.
When their paperwork gets mixed up and Magnolia loses her boss’s important documents, she’s fired on the spot. Enter Nash… who conveniently forgets to mention he owns the building 👀 and comes from a very wealthy family. After a messy breakup with his gold-digging ex, he needs a favor: his grandfather is in his final days and wants to meet Nash’s fiancée.
So… fake dating it is 💍
Magnolia agrees to play the part for two weeks, but what starts as a business arrangement quickly turns into something more. And honestly? The grandpa storyline 🥹💛 absolutely stole my heart. His connection with Magnolia was one of the sweetest parts of the book.
Now, I’ll be honest—I am burned out on fake dating. There have been SO many lately, and the trope can feel repetitive and overly convenient. I almost skipped this one… but Carina Taylor is an auto-read author for me, so I gave it a shot.
And I’m glad I did.
✨ Magnolia is hilarious, genuine, and refreshingly not motivated by money ✨ Nash is peak swoony hero energy ✨ The banter and friendships (especially with Piper!) add so much charm
This is a clean romance (no spice beyond kissing, no swearing), making it perfect if you’re in the mood for something light, wholesome, and feel-good 💕
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5) A sweet, cozy read on Kindle Unlimited—especially if you still have room in your heart for one more fake dating story 😉
💬 Favorite Carina Taylor book? Mine is Clean Out of Luck!
This rom-com was such a joy from start to finish. It hooked me right away with a memorable (and slightly chaotic) first meeting between Nash and Magnolia during a fire in their building—definitely not your typical meet-cute, and all the better for it.
One of my favourite things about this story was the contrast in settings. From Nash’s grandfather’s opulent house to the cosy charm of the ranch in Pine Ridge, the atmosphere felt rich and immersive throughout. It gave the story both a glamorous edge and those comforting, small-town vibes I love.
The fake engagement trope was done so well here. What starts as a practical arrangement for the sake of Nash’s grandfather naturally shifts into something deeper, with plenty of forced proximity moments that let their relationship grow in a believable way. I especially appreciated that Nash didn’t rush into his feelings—his hesitancy, shaped by past experiences with money, added a layer of realism and made the romance feel more grounded.
The found family element and close-knit friendships brought so much heart to the story, and the humour genuinely landed. There were so many one-liners that made me smile.
I also loved the “knives out”–style family dynamics, which added just the right amount of tension and intrigue, making the conclusion all the more satisfying.
Overall, this was a fun, cosy, and witty romance with heart, humour, and a satisfying slow-burn payoff.
wow i was immediately hooked by this book! I absolutely loved Nash and Magnolia. I loved their “meet cute”, their banter and playfulness, and I think my favorite part of their relationship was how they supported one another from the beginning.
I think fake relationship/fake engagement has quickly become one of my favorite tropes. This was written so well and it was impossible not to root for Magnolia and Nash.
You could tell from the very beginning that this “fake” relationship was doomed 😂 AND I LOVED IT.
“Yet here I am, hoping he’s flirting with me, and I don’t even know his last name.”
“I’m flirting with Magnolia…Of all the people I could have run into on that staircase, I managed to run into the funniest, most attractive woman in the building.”
Like I said, DOOMED🤣🤣 I found myself laughing out loud so many times through this book. But at the same time, I found myself swooning so much 😭
“I’ve been falling for Magnolia ever since she started cracking jokes in that stairwell. I’ve been trying to do everything I can to pump the brakes on my heart, but it’s no use. I’m head over heels for her. And now I have to figure out how to love her and protect her.”
“You have brought fun back into my life. I’ve never smiled or laughed so much with anyone, and I’m so grateful to you for that.”
this book was amazing. If you’re looking for a good fake relationship book with plenty of banter and swoon worthy moments, grab this one today!
A chance encounter (during a fire) leads Magnolia Hawthorne and Nash Whitlock into a fake engagement. Along the way the pair discover they aren’t having to fake their feelings. But when it comes time for them to let those closest in on the secret, they fear the disappointment they have created will have lasting ramifications.
I am no stranger to this book’s setting or female friend group. In fact, last year I had the pleasure of reading, Charlie Takes A Chance. I was however, a bit surprised to find that Miss Magnolia’s In A Mash, despite coming out after (Charlie Takes A Chance), is the official series starter for the Pine Ridge Ranch Series.
While the release of this book was unconventional, readers can count on Carina Taylor to deliver a conventional romcom!!!
Magnolia and Nash’s story was a unique spin on the fake engagement (dating) trope. They quickly and naturally went from strangers, to friends, to romantic partners. The ease at which they interacted with one another other and their magnetic chemistry served as a believable backdrop for their fake engagement.
Be sure to read this book for: -MMC with a Hidden Identity -FMC with Wild Aspirations (Bakery/ Brewery Owner) -Small Town Setting (Pine Ridge Ranch) -Fake Dating -Found Family
I received a complimentary copy (electronic) of Miss Magnolia In A Mash courtesy of Netgalley and Carina Taylor. This is an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was so fun! I love reading Carina Taylor’s books because they are often low stress with lots of laughs. Miss Magnolia’s in a Mash is a part of Carina Taylor’s Pine Ridge Ranch series. The story sounded interesting so I was excited to read it! Magnolia was a breath of fresh air. She was just living life to its fullest. She was trying to find her place and figure out her dreams. I love how she seemed to genuinely cared for people Although she didn’t know Nash well, she was willing to help him out. I loved her interactions with Nash’s grandpa and how she just wanted to live a quiet life. Poor Nash, he was feeling the weight of his family’s expectations and he wanted to do what was right. He kind of roped Magnolia into the fake relationship but he didn’t have any malicious intent. I loved seeing him grow and find himself as he spent time with Magnolia. Their romance was so sweet and I loved their easy relationship. They became friends but ended up falling in love as they spent time together. They were faking a relationship to help Nash’s grandpa but they ended up loving being together. The book was just the perfect pick me up. I really enjoyed this book and I would totally recommend it! Miss Magnolia’s in a Mash is a closed door romantic comedy.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Once again Carina Taylor has proven that she is, in my opinion at least, the absolute queen of banter and sass... because the back and forth between Magnolia and Nash? Oh my goodness, it was so good. I found myself smiling and laughing out loud right from their very first, rather awkward, meet-cute. Followed by a fake engagement to a basic stranger to please a dying grandfather... who then makes a miraculous recovery!? Clearly, the laughs didn't stop with their first meeting. There was so much to love about this one: the family drama (seriously, so good), the chemistry, the friendships... I was here for absolutely everything this story had to offer. And let's not forget Alexander, Nash's grandpa, who really is another star of this story. I mean, I loved the romance between Magnolia and Nash wholeheartedly, but I'm always a sucker for a quirky grandparent character and Alexander fit the role perfectly... I just loved him and his relationship with both Nash AND Magnolia... I won't give anything away, but trust me, you'll definitely want to experience this one for yourself. If you're looking for your next great laugh out loud romcom, Carina Taylor never disappoints! This one is a must read, for sure!
Miss Magnolia's in a Mash is a closed-door romance with kisses only and minor language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
This was such a funny and cute fake dating (fake engagement) story, I loved pretty much everything about it. - The meet cute, the banter and definitely the grandpa.
Sassy meddling grandparents are usually not my favorite, they are often overdone to an extent that they annoy me more than they entertain. But grandpa Alexander was such a sweetheart and found family is one of my favorite tropes, so I loved the relationship he formed with “Miss Magnolia”.
Magnolia is sweet and kind but definitely a bit sassy and just the perfect match for Nash. I especially loved how protective and caring he was. The two have immediate chemistry and are just extremely cute together.
Yes, the story is a bit over the top, but I just loved it. It’s lighthearted but with a lot of heart and it made me laugh and smile and root for the characters. It’s everything I want in a clean romantic comedy.
This is book 1 in the Pine Ridge Ranch series but book 2 Charlie takes a Chance already released in January 2025 and I loved it just as much. I have enjoyed all of Carina Taylor’s book so far but I think this is my favorite series of hers and I can’t wait for book 3, Betting on Bliss!
* Thank you to the author for letting me read an advanced copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily and the expressed opinions are my own.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I absolutely loved this book! I’m already a huge fan of Carina Taylor’s writing, and this story reminded me exactly why. Her books are always fun, engaging, and full of heart, and this one delivered all of that and more.
I’m a total sucker for a fake engagement trope honestly, anything fake relationship related gets me every time and this story did it so well. Watching the characters navigate their pretend relationship while all the real feelings start sneaking in is one of my favorite things, and this book nailed that tension and chemistry perfectly.
The characters were lovable, the story kept me hooked, and I found myself smiling so much while reading. It had that perfect mix of humor, romance, and those swoony moments that make you not want to put the book down.
The best part? This is just book one in the series! I’m so excited knowing there will be more stories coming because I definitely want to spend more time in this world.
If you love fake engagements, charming romance, and authors who know how to pull you into a story, you’ll definitely want to pick up Miss Magnolia’s in a Mess. I can’t wait for the next book! 📚💛
Thank you to Booked With The Emilys and Carina Taylor for the gifted copy of this book!
Magnolia Hawthorne runs into Nash Whitlock while evacuating the building due to a fire alarm. They both spill the contents of their folders, and make a striking connection to one another. Magnolia is subsequently fired from her job for the paperwork mix-up and abruptly hired as Nash's fake fiancée. Nash's grandfather, Alexander, has a last wish to meet Nash's fiancée. The only problem is that Nash and his fiancée broke things off because she was only in it for his money. As a result, Nash needs to find a fiancée fast, and Magnolia has found herself jobless. What was supposed to be a short deception turns into a long-term ruse when Alexander makes a miraculous recovery. Now, Nash and Magnolia are forced to continue faking their relationship, returning to Nash's small town, and much more.
I found this book to be a quick and engaging read. I loved Magnolia and Nash and wanted to continue reading to find out what was going to happen next. This book has strong friendships, family drama, a fake engagement, and forced proximity. There is a third-act breakup, but the reunion is one of the sweetest I have ever read.
I loved the concept of this story, and really liked the characters, but I wish the execution had been a bit smoother with clearer motivation and momentum throughout. The plot tended to whiplash back and forth with the characters deciding to hide their feelings one moment, then blatantly pushing for clear declaration of feelings immediately after, or choosing to actively pursue a real relationship but then breaking up almost immediately after with no real change in circumstance to precipitate the change in character motivation. (Also the inciting incident of an office actually feeling panic over a fire alarm feels unrealistic to me - but that could be a Canadian vs elsewhere thing. Here we're so used to accidentally setting off fire alarms, or going through fire alarm tests that everyone tends to be a bit desensitized and reacts slowly and essentially never thinks it's an actual emergency - which after reflecting on this book seems slightly concerning)
Anyway - overall I did enjoy reading the book because I loved the idea and characters, I just would have loved for it to have a bit more of a cohesive progression throughout the story.
Miss Magnolia's in a Mash is one of the best fake-fiancé stories I have read! I enjoyed every bit of it starting with their life and death first meeting on a stairwell. Magnolia is full of quick witted sass that doesn't faze Nash one bit as he gives it right back to her! I was hoping that they would have a chance to see each other again! Magnolia is such a kind, sparkling personality that I thought I'd would like to be friends with her! Nash, a man caught in a toxic family crisis with a critically ill grandfather, could use such a friend. His unconscious attraction leads him to impulsively ask her to pose as his fiancé to fulfill his dying grandfather's request. For me, the story progression from unspoken initial attraction, the pretending that leads to friendship and the uncertainty of feelings to the realization of their love creates an original, heartwarming, romantic comedy. This was an entertaining read and I am happy to see that Carina Taylor has published the next book in the Pine Ridge Ranch series. Can't wait to read Charlie's story! I received an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review based solely on my personal reading experience.
Thanks to @bookedwiththeemilys @carinataylorauthor for the #gifted copy of this book! It’s release week for Miss Magnolia’s in a Mash, the “prequel” to Charlie Takes a Chance! I know I’m always going to get a fantastic meet-cute from Carina Taylor and as usual this story had me smiling right from the start! The premise? Nash needs Magnolia to be his fake fiancé because she helps his grandpa’s health suddenly make a dramatic turn for the better. Magnolia is searching for the perfect place to start her distillery/bakery, and Nash’s money can help her with that. With a full cast of side characters including people we met in the last book, some evil money-hungry family members, and Magnolia’s high heels, there’s lots of fun to be had! As usual for Taylor, there are so many funny one-liners and mishaps. She is one of my favorite authors right now, and I’m loving this series set in the fictional Oregon town of Pine Ridge. Available now!

Thanks to @bookedwiththeemilys and @carinataylorauthor for this #gifted copy of this totally fun romcom story! My own thoughts to follow.
The Brief: Magnolia literally runs into Nash and consequently loses her job and becomes a fake fiancée. Life’s got to go up from that kind of day.
The Debrief: A meet on a stair well during a fire alarm going off never seemed so swoony and @carinataylorauthor immediately grabbed me and didn’t let go until my head was a Magnolia Nash Mash. Magnolia is like a ray of snarky sunshine and brought laughter and smiles to the pages even while trying to figure out how to chase her own dreams. And Nash? A business guy who is also a cowboy? Does it get any better? So much to love:
🤠grandpa interactions 🤠Max moments 🤠dreaming big 🤠the chemistry was unfakable 🤠great banter 🤠throwing down with Isabel 🤠loving unconditionally
The Rhyme: Nash will do anything to keep his grandpa alive for as long as possible, even introducing a fiancé who is fake. Does Magnolia want part of his crazy or will being with Nash be more than she can take?
Set in Bend, Oregon and a small town a few hours away in Eastern Oregon, Magnolia and Nash meet when their building's fire alarm goes off. Soon after, Nash needs someone to stand in as his fiance to his dying grandfather. Magnolia is the opposite of a gold digger, so hopeful against all the bad around her. Nash's extended family is full of drama and tension (his mom is very sweet!). I loved seeing Nash step up and get past his prior relationship to be there for Magnolia. This was such a fun, easy read. And the ending was so sweet!
This romance features: 💕 Small town 💕 Fake engagement 💕 Complicated family 💕 Forced proximity 💕 One things leads to another 💕 Meddling grandfather
