Step into Veil Haven—a strange Appalachian town at the edge of our dimension where everyone has powers, ancient gods hover just out of sight, and cryptids roam the streets. Whether you’re returning or visiting this world for the first time, Veil Haven’s mysteries await.
Sixteen-year-old Ash possesses the rare gift of omniscience, allowing her to see every moment unfolding across Veil Haven—from quiet daily routines to terrifying cryptid encounters. As Ash navigates her own challenges, like the strained relationship of her adoptive family, the townspeople expect her to protect them from the ravenous cryptids and bizarre dangers that haunt their streets. But Ash knows, deep in her bones, there is nothing she can do to save them.
She Will Never Save Us offers a vivid, intimate glimpse into Ash’s life and the complex, intertwined stories of Veil Haven’s residents. Taking place about a year before the events of the novel Veil Haven, it serves as the perfect entry point for new readers or a heartfelt return for longtime fans. Come home to a world where the extraordinary and the everyday collide—and where seeing everything doesn’t mean you have the power to control it.
Stream of consciousness stories are very hit or miss, in the case of She Will Never Save Us it was a hit. I enjoyed the small-town weirdness/horror and the balance, or maybe tension, between the mundane and the weird (think WTNV or Tales from the Gas Station but with a more YA vibe). Kelley knows how to set the scene and how to make it very palpable without taking up too many pages.
I read this novella to see if I was willing to commit to the nearly 400 pages of Veil Haven and I'm positively sold!
A must if you read veil haven before, short stories that help you gives some insight about the town and ash, filled with fun/creepy short drabbles! Really loved the last story in the book!!
