Nice premise but for me i just couldn't get into the story. Everything seemed too simplified in how things played out then you get to the end of the book and it just ends mid journey. I'm sure the author plans to make this more than one book but he kind of ended it with out wrapping up the arc that never really got started.
The old man was retired military but she had taken its toll. Now he worked as a janitor at a military contractors facility. That evening everything changed an alien ship had crashed with a survivor
I was kind of looking forward to this book and this series because I’d hear some good things about it. Well, I’m was totally disappointed, but I find the writing kind of stilted. The dialogue between the two main characters isn’t what I consider smooth and I’m not sure why. One is an alien and the other is a human so I guess there should be some difficulty in communicating right at the start.
Anyways, I was really, really surprised to find that Raymond “Flip” Kinnely was described as an old man of seventy-five. Well, I happen to be seventy-five and I kind of resent, no I guess I really, resemble an old man! Still, Flip as he’s usually called, seems to get himself in a lot of trouble.
He works as a janitor for the VasCorp which is somehow tied into the government. I do know they have some government contracts and the place Flip works has security guards around most of the time. Yet, he’s never really encountered much high-level secrecy around the plant that he currently works. Except for today!
He gets a frantic call from his boss to come in right now. Flip can’t understand why the hurry but he is doing his best to get to work as fast as possible. He gets to the entrance security gate only to find a new guard there, a more up-armored guard than usual. The guard checks his clip-board and says Flip is on the list so he lets him through. Flip notices other unusual activity around the plant. There’s a lot more perimeter guards roaming around and they have sharpshooters on the roof! Now he’s really confused as to what’s going on.
Once he gets to his shop office, he finds his boss sitting at a table and he’s the only one there. He asks where’s every one else, but the boss says they were told to leave and take the day off! So, why was he called in. Well, his boss said the had to have someone there besides himself and Flip’s shift was coming up so that’s why he’s there. Then Flip asked about all the extra security around. His boss says he’s not sure, but he’s been told to stay out of the hanger and he tells Flip he better do that also.
So, Flip grabs his usual stuff and heads out to do his usual routine. He does pass the hanger and has a chance to peek through the doors. What he sees is a huge rock that seems to be sitting inside the hanger but it looks too big to have gotten through the doors. He also sees a lot of the lab guys walking around the rock talking to each other. They seem to be trying to figure out his thing.
Well, Flip has seen enough to know it’s none of his business so he heads on down to clean the corporate offices. Once there he sees one of the guards that he trained a few years back. He asks him what’s he doing guarding the office doors and his friend tells him they are keeping someone inside. He also tells Flip that he’s not going in there without some kind of authorization.
Well, this really puzzles Flip. But then the guard tells him that the comms are down and he can’t get a relief so he can hit the head! He’s in bad shape and asks if Flip will take his place for just a few minutes while he does his business. Flip reluctantly agrees and the guard hands him his pistol which Flip tucks into his pants. He also receives the security key card from the guard, but is told not to use it or open the door!
But then he hears a tiny voice talking to him through the door. Who ever it is, is asking for him to let her out. Flip can’t see through the door so he asks if the person is hurt or just why is she being locked in the offices. She says she was captured along with her shuttle. Flip can’t figure that out, but he asks if she knows what that thing is in the hanger. She says she does and it is her shuttle. She needs to get back to it and go find the object she has been looking for.
Flip just doesn’t see why anyone should be held agains their will by VasCorp. They are not a police organization so don’t have the authority to just abuse anyone of their rights. And detaining someone agains their will just doesn’t set right with Flip. So Flip decides to open the door.
Well, things are going to definitely change for Raymond “Flip” Kinnely. He finds out the person being held is actually an alien woman called Sorsha. She’s kind of blue so that’s a big change from the few women Flip’s normally sees. She begins to ask for his help and one thing leads to another and Flip is going to become very closely attached to this alien female.
This is going to be an adventure for any seventy-five year old guy. Sorsha is probably in her thirties, not bad looking, but, of course, very alien. She has some kind of translation device that allows her to speak English and understand most of what Flip says. Flip’s life is certainly going to change. They will get out of the plant, but then Sorsha has to find something that is not far from where they are now. But, by then, VasCorp has brought in some high-level operatives that are going to chase Flip and Sorsha down one way or another. Flip is looking at being dead or spending the rest of his life behind bars.
A good start to an interesting series. While I don’t like the dialogue, it doesn’t distract from the book. There is some fighting and not just on Earth. Flip will be rewarded, but that’s just because of the circumstances and the chance he took. He’s going to live longer than he ever expected. More to this story will be told in book 2, “Nomads Gate”, now available on Amazon.

Raymond “Flip” Kinnely is a nearly worn out 75 year old Vietnam Veteran working a dead end job as a janitor for a tech company that not only doesn’t respect his earlier accomplishments (including training all of their security forces 15 years ago) but lacks morals too. So when an alien spaceship crashes in the California desert, the company gets the contract to attempt to analyze the ship.
Flip happens to be at work that day & discovers that the company has also taken the pilot of the ship captive. When Flip meets the alien he finds out that the pretty (blue skinned) pilot is named Sorsha. She tells Flip that the company has made no secret of their intentions to bring a trained interrogator to learn all they can, including torture or vivisection. While Flip doesn’t want to rock the boat with his superiors, his sense of honor won’t allow the torture of an innocent person. Even if they happen to be really from out of town & having blue skin.
My only concern lies with the way “Murphy’s Law” hits the two of them SO hard in so many ways. Yes, it certainly keeps the story interesting to have the pair forced to deal with problem after problem it becomes a bit much. The story also ends so abruptly that at first I thought that the e-book was missing a last page! But I do plan to read the next book to see what happens next.
Nice entertaining story. Throughout the story, as the protagonists confront various opponents, they escape primarily due to the errors of their opponents. There's lots of visuals, my favorite being the where they're trying to escape form a planet while in the midst of a hurricane because a nuclear pile is about to go critical, but they're having to avoid a band of pirates and a giant Yeti both of which are attacking each other causing a distraction which fails when the female runs into the Yeti's leg while trying to get outside a steel door. Much is borrowed such as the Egyptian sarcophagus that sounds straight from Star Gate except this one needs a battery to work. Nothing borrowed from Scalzi except the similar sounding title of the book. Nothing deep. Just fun to read.
I took a big chance on this book and it paid off. The reviews of course were mixed and the critical ones seemed to have all the same points. For me the plot and events flew along just fine without the threatened review bumps. The action was regular and mostly constant. I don't consider the dialog stilted. The characters are interesting and likeable. The events were logical and interesting, comes of having an old spaceship needing to be fixed up before interesting tech problems get the characters killed. This was fun book. I have ordered in print version the next two books of the series, then found frustrating that books four and five are Kindle only. Mr. Walker, please publish these in print also, plus future bookd in this series.
Not the best in my humble opinion. I just found that I couldn't but into the whole thing really and found !myself skipping pages as one disaster followed another. I get the technology, however, can you but into a space shop that self repairs whatever damage occurs? I think not! The last chapter ended with the villain searching for the heroes in the universe, I mean come on it's vast what are the chances? Zero! Sorry John Walker you are not a story teller or fantasy weaver. Sadly if you were then the concept is really good, just needs work. Sadly I don't have the time to wait for your polished version.
This is a science fiction story about an artifact, and two people who are involved with it. The artifact is essential at the beginning of the story, but the rest of the story is about how the alien and flip end up invading all the different dangers of the universe. The major flaw on the story is that the story is not really about the artifact and how the pair the dangers of the universe. I recommend the story for those who like a science fiction story but don’t expect too much.
It should have been a warning, I suppose, that the title contains a misspelling. Anyway, the conceit is mildly clever, but something just seems off with the writing along the way. And it seems that several of the secondary characters are stereotypes. Beyond that and word choice errors, I can't say exactly what rubbed me wrong. Oh. And it doesn't really end; rather, it's more like, "that was episode 1 in this year's series. We hope you liked the pilot." On the positive side, it's an action book without gratuitous gore or vulgarity.
Kind of a mess. First half is about escaping a facility on Earth. The primary antagonist is killed. The second half is about finding a site to send an essential communication. But an enemy ship arrives, and the final section of the book involves escaping from what seems to be the new enemy.
Having the main (elderly) character rejuvenated seems like a cop out. The alien he is traveling with does a great deal of talking. The author has no idea how a nuclear reactor works, much less melts down.
For a supposed “action” book there isn’t much.

You are not likely find an old janitor with a military record as does Raymond "Flip" Kinnely. Being 75 years old does have it's disadvantages. But even Flip could not have guessed that he would get to rescue a blue skinned alien woman and get drawn into a mind boggling intergalactic adventure. If only the jaw dropping stopped there! Author John Walker certainly hooked me with the surprising plot of Artifact : An Old Man's Comeback. Phew! Enjoy.
Unfortunately, the book reads reminds me it's simple mindedness of the new Disney Alien series. A potentially highly dangerous alien come to Earth, gets freed by some guy super easily and later she wastes the artifact that was to supposed to save her world on him..
Criticism and comments
Forced, unnecessary gender crap from the get go. There is absolutely no need to state that there is a single passenger who is then constantly referred to as they/them! Disgusting.
I really liked the story. It must be good, or I wouldn't have stayed through the horrible editing job done on it. I wonder if it was professionally edited, or if just his friends did it for him. Some of the problems were enough to stop my reading in order to figure out just what was being said. Some of the problems were really bad. Still, the story was good. Hope his editing improves in the next volume.
Interesting storyline, starting with a found alien on Earth, and a past his prime former military asset who befriends her. Throw in an Egyptian reference, a military black ops team on Earth, and a wildly adaptable alien encounter on another world and you have a decent foundation for a series.
I’ll start by saying that I liked the premise of the story. However, the writing and parts of the plot did seem a little simplistic. I did like the main characters and the antagonist that was introduced kept it interesting. As mentioned I enjoyed the premise and I will be buying the next book in the series to see where it goes.
This was a really fun book, lots of action and adventure while getting through interesting problems. I hope this is the start of a series as there is a lot more fun these characters can get into. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
The book is excellent It has action and intrigue from the very beginning and ends with a great opening for the next book. You find yourself involved the whole time and can't put it down
I read this book in one day, and I enjoyed the trip thoroughly. It was non stop action after the first few chapters. I was wondering if there will be a sequel, or maybe a few more books in this possible series. Thanks so much for an enjoyable story.
No sex 2 people on a ship she has seen him without clothes They go to medical room 2 beds come out and not even that night they were one The bad guy talks to his family about getting even and THAT was to turn the page and the book ends no next book
There is hope, real reason to hope for a bright future. Its the first time I years. If he fails the consequences is death. But he won't muss this chance tri unveil this enemy ship.
Excellent story, entertaining and a very enjoyable read, kept me interested all the way through, the main characters bounced off each other very well with amusing anecdotes through out, good conclusion look forward to the next book.
Great read. Looking forward to reading the next book. But please hire a proofreader before you publish. So tired of reading sloppy books which are otherwise fun to read.
A scanner but worth reading. If there's a next in the series I'll buy it. Otherwise I'll just wish the old guy luck when he ends up on her planet because at the moment it doesn't seem like he'll see earth again. 🙂
Great characters that you want to get to know better. Really well thought out story line that leads you into wanting to know "what happens next?" Glad to have this book in my library and recommend it to anyone who likes a good story.
Sorsha and Flip keep stumbling from one catastrophe to the next, barely escaping. So the action is constant and fun as long as the details don't matter.
I called it quits after reading about 50 to 60% of the book. Character development…. well development is probably not the correct word to use as the characters were rather two dimensional, the conversation stilted, and the action rather perfunctory.
