«Sou a Mary», diz, olhando para mim como se eu devesse saber exatamente quem é.

Whew! Talk about being kept on your toes and fully invested!!! Her Housekeeper was gripping, shocking, tense, and twist filled. Samantha Hayes takes readers on a wild ride in this riveting psychological thriller! I thought I had things figured out in this book, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong! Samantha Hayes carefully and expertly crafted a twisted tale that I did not want to put down!
Gina, Matt, and their two young children find themselves in need of a place to stay after a fire at their home. When Gina's friend, Annie, offers them the use of her home, they can't refuse. When a woman shows up saying she is the housekeeper. Annie who is out of town, confirms that Mary, the woman at the door is her housekeeper, they let her in.....
I loved the tension in this book. I thought Samantha Hayes did a great job depicting Gina's sense of unease and doubt that arose during her interactions with Mary. I could almost see the hairs on the back of her neck standing up as she questioned Mary's intentions and motives. I also enjoyed the POV of both Mary and Gina. What a nice touch!
As I mentioned, this book has a nice number of secrets, suspense, tension, and twists. I love books which keep me guessing and Her Housekeeper did that and then some! I look forward to reading what Samantha Hayes writes next!

I’m pretty certain that the author would not anticipate my burst of laughter as the climax of the novel is reached. I pick myself up of the floor, dry my eyes and reflect on the concept of fiction and far fetched. Then there’s this. Seriously??? In addition cardboard cutout characters and dialogue that makes me wince. I’ll shut up now as I know others loved this and I’m genuinely glad but I’m joining my GR pal on outlier island where we’re going to have a party of two. 🏝️🥳👯😂

Se é para conviver literariamente com subalternos, ao menos que tenham uniforme engomado e um ar de autoridade. Criadas não, governantas sim. Afinal, a minha costela aristocrática tem padrões, o bom gosto ainda não me abandonou, e a minha veia burguesa agradece.
Ah! E tal, isso é snobismo!! Migas, entre uma criada com sonhos e uma governanta com segredos, eu escolho a que sabe onde estão os corpos enterrados — e, de preferência, quem os pôs lá.
Infelizmente, A Governanta, de Samantha Hayes, não é essa escolha. O mote até podia ter dado pano para mangas: uma governanta envolta em mistério, uma casa cheia de silêncios e um passado que ameaça vir ao de cima. Mas o que prometia ser um thriller elegante e retorcido transformou-se rapidamente numa história fraca, sem interesse, com personagens planas como uma tábua de engomar e comportamentos no mínimo estapafúrdios. Há várias tentativas de gerar suspense psicológico, todas elas falhadas; há uma intenção de mostrar solidariedade feminina, mas o tiro sai pela culatra; há reviravoltas inverosímeis a rodos e um final digno de novela mexicana de fraca qualidade.
Li até ao fim, é verdade!! O mesmo instinto que nos faz abrandar ao passar por um acidente na estrada levou-me até à última página: aquela curiosidade mórbida de perceber até onde poderia ir o disparate. O último plot twist? Só ridículo.

Gostei bastante e acabei a ser surpreendida!
Acho que houve algumas coisas que poderiam ser melhores, achei que o início foi muito lento e a situação acabou por ser previsível mas depois do meio do livro os plots começaram e foram surpreendentes! Aconteceu imensa coisa e, sem dúvida, que foi uma leitura viciante.

Gina and her family have a problem - after her husband Matt’s cheap installation of a light fixture, their house burned down, luckily while they were away for the evening. Matt, Gina and their children, toddler Tommy and newborn Gracie, were staying in hotels until Gina’s actress friend told them she was going to be out of the country for a few weeks. Being able to stay in a fancy house while theirs was being rebuilt was a dream come true…until it became a nightmare.
They’re just getting settled when someone is at the door, acting as if they were expecting her arrival. She’s the housekeeper, Mary, and after Gina texts Annie to verify she’s legit, she is there *almost* every day…until the time she shows up with a suitcase and a son, saying she left her abusive boyfriend and didn’t know where else to go. Again, Annie reassures Gina that it’s fine; there is plenty of room for Mary and Travis, and now Grace will have help with the kids. Unfortunately, it’s not fine…
There were tiny things in this that I didn’t care for, like slight medical inaccuracy and the dropping of a couple minor plot lines. I also thought the author was planting too many red herrings, as some things were obvious from the beginning. Oooor…maybe that was on purpose, to make the reader think they have the ending pegged, then twisting everything around with several shocking revelations! This was a really fun read, with a past/present format, many surprises and an ending I never saw coming. Definitely a page turner, I give this one 3.5 stars, rounded up!

"Her Housekeeper" was a mess and a miss.
TWO (2) stars for TOO many reasons:
* TOO long.
I listened to the 10-hour audiobook that easily could have been 6 hours.
* TOO many eye-rolling moments.
The book required a huge suspension of disbelief.
* TOO much objectionable content.
Not a fan of books about child rape and child abuse.
It was Karen Cass and Harrie Dobby's outstanding narration that helped me reach the finish line.

I’ve said before I love a cuckoo in a book and there is a mighty one here in this latest thriller by Samantha Hayes
And she has a reason to be….more than one tbh and very soon Matt and Gina who are staying at their friend Annie’s house will find out why ( the housekeeper comes with the house as part of the deal )
Books on themes well worn now have to have ( well for me ) that added ‘out the norm’ to impress and this really did, with genuine surprises right up until the end
Living with Diabetes and also suffering from claustrophobia and panic attacks are part of the story as incidentals but fit in well to what is happening
Enjoyable, well written and thrilling as a thriller should be, one of the most memorable psychological reads this year

foi o meu primeiro livro da autora e gostei muito da escrita.
o início foi um bocado lento (mas também não ajudou eu estar numa reading slump) mas depois a partir de meio foram plots atrás de plots.

"Ik vertelde haar dat ik de huishoudster was, en waarom zou ze me niet geloven? Wat ik tekortkom in ervaring, maak ik weer goed door hard te werken om dit gigantische huis schoon te houden. Ik bekommer me om haar kinderen, en neem haar alle zorgen uit handen wanneer ze uitgeput is.
Daarom biedt ze me gelijk een kamer aan wanneer ze ziet dat al mijn tassen in de gang staan en ik haar vertel dat ik nergens naartoe kan. Ze is zo goed van vertrouwen. Dat was ze altijd al."
'Haar huishoudster' wordt vanuit verschillende personages verteld. Zo is er Gina. Ze heeft een man en een jong zoontje en doordat hun huis door een brand is verwoest, hebben ze tijdelijk geen huis. Gelukkig mogen ze van Annie, een hele goede vriendin van Gina, tijdelijk in haar huis wonen. Annie is namelijk op reis in Afrika, dus dat is geen enkel probleem.
Maar dan is daar de huishoudster van Annie. Ze blijft toch haar werkzaamheden uitvoeren, ondanks dat Annie niet thuis is. En Gina weet niet zo goed wat ze van haar moet denken...
Je leest ook hoofdstukken vanuit de huishoudster en eigenlijk weet je dan al meteen of ze een goed of slecht personage is. Ook maak je sprongen naar het verleden en vooral deze momenten vond ik erg interessant. Er is namelijk iets vreselijks gebeurd en Gina en haar oude vriendengroep blijken er een grote rol in te spelen.
Het verhaal vond ik niet heel erg spannend worden en misschien vond ik het ook allemaal wel een beetje voorspelbaar.
Misschien dat ik dus iets minder enthousiast ben dan het merendeel van de lezers, maar ik vond het een redelijke thriller. Helaas zat er geen "wow" moment in voor mij, maar het was ook niet heel erg slecht. Prima om eens gelezen te hebben, dus.

O início deste livro foi um pouco “calmo”, mas depois fui ficando cada vez mais viciada e entranhada na história!
Alguns plot twists foram previsíveis, mas outros não, especialmente os do final! A segunda metade do livro é super cativante e não conseguia parar de ler! 🙆🏽♀️
Contudo, o epílogo deixou muito a desejar porque tinha tudo para ser incrível, mas só me deixou confusa 🥴

A Governanta podia muito bem ter sido escrita pela Freida McFadden (A Criada), porque tem todos os ingredientes de um thriller de domingo à tarde: personagens duvidosas, situações pouco ortodoxas e, claro… homens em quem nunca se deve confiar.
Como bom detetive amador, desconfiei de meio mundo. Não acertei totalmente nas minhas previsões, mas andei perto e não sei se isso é mérito meu, se a história não arriscou o suficiente, ou se simplesmente a minha carreira de Sherlock de sofá está mesmo condenada.
Ainda assim, a escrita é leve, prende facilmente e lê-se sem esforço. É daquelas histórias que nos fazem pensar “só mais um capítulo” até percebermos que já chegámos ao fim.
Os plot twists estão lá, mudam as peças do tabuleiro, mas as pistas são tão óbvias que quase davam para fazer um bingo de mistério. Ainda assim, quem adorou A Criada vai sentir-se em casa, porque, convenhamos, governantas e criadas nunca vêm só para limpar.

“A Governanta” de Samantha Hayes é um thriller psicológico e foi uma leitura conjunta, com a Carla.
O que dizer sobre a história?
Imaginem um casal, Gina e Matt, com dois filhos pequenos, que ficam sem casa após um incêndio, que felizmente ocorreu na sua ausência.
Annie, uma das melhores amigas de Gina, está em viagem, mas tem uma mansão vazio e empresta a casa à amiga.
Até agora a história não tem nada de creepy...
Pois... existe Mary... é jovem, é a governanta da casa... parece eficiente... mas é estranha... muito estranha... ou será imaginação da Gina?

Adorei este livro, foi uma leitura rápida e fluída. Gostei da forma como o livro está escrito, muito equilibrado na forma como os factos vão sendo desvendados. Um final inesperado à altura da história.

" Apesar do medo a apoderar-se de mim,do terror de ter feito asneira,de ter percebido tudo mal,de ter tornado tudo pior para o Tyler,tenho de manter a calma.
Estou na cozinha da Annie,com os dedos entrelaçados, a olhar lá para fora pelas portas de vidro enquanto tento descortinar o que fazer a seguir".
📍Este é daqueles livros inesquecíveis, cheio de reviravoltas, num ambiente que nos corta a respiração e nos faz criar montes de teorias.
É um livro misterioso do início ao fim e mexe com a nossa intuição.
Quem disse que as vidas e neste caso a casa perfeita não escondem segredos? Mais interessante ainda, a capacidade do ser humano de enganar todos a sua volta e a sua capacidade de esconder sentimentos e acções sem que ninguém perceba.
🧐 É um livro escrito de forma muito inteligente, as personagens muito bem construídas e uma escrita muito viciante e o ambiente do início ao fim sempre dentro da mesma atmosfera, claustrofóbica e tensa.
Foi um livro misterioso e que tem um final surpreendente, embora confesse que durante a leitura acertei em dois pormenores mas que em nada me estragaram a leitura.
📍Contado a duas vozes a da Mary a Governanta da casa que também têm um papel fundamental nesta história e da Gina uma das personagens principais desta história, uma dança entre o passado e o futuro num ritmo impressionante de suspense até ao fim!
🔎Não posso contar muito e ir às escuras para esta obra é a meu ver uma óptima decisão 🫣
Será que a Mary é quem diz ser? Pelo menos é uma personagem intrigante,enigmática e que causa arrepios, gostam desse género de protagonistas?
Só me resta aconselhar esta leitura, principalmente se são fãs da @fmcfaddenauthor

É um livro misterioso do início ao fim e mexe com a nossa intuição.
Quem disse que as vidas e neste caso a casa perfeita não escondem segredos? Mais interessante ainda, a capacidade do ser humano de enganar todos a sua volta e a sua capacidade de esconder sentimentos e acções sem que ninguém perceba.
🧐 É um livro escrito de forma muito inteligente, as personagens muito bem construídas e uma escrita muito viciante e o ambiente do início ao fim sempre dentro da mesma atmosfera, claustrofóbica e tensa.
Foi um livro misterioso e que tem um final surpreendente, embora confesse que durante a leitura acertei em dois pormenores mas que em nada me estragaram a leitura.
📍Contado a duas vozes a da Mary a Governanta da casa que também têm um papel fundamental nesta história e da Gina uma das personagens principais desta história, uma dança entre o passado e o futuro num ritmo impressionante de suspense até ao fim!
🔎Não posso contar muito e ir às escuras para esta obra é a meu ver uma óptima decisão 🫣
Será que a Mary é quem diz ser? Pelo menos é uma personagem intrigante,enigmática e que causa arrepios, gostam desse género de protagonistas?

Adoro quando um livro me provoca. E esta “Governanta” conseguiu fazer-me quase gritar com as personagens. Acompanhar a derrocada, assistir às atitudes erradas de quem não detém toda a informação, provocou-me nervos, confesso. Mas nervos bons, daqueles que empolgam! E não é isto que se procura num thriller?
Gina e Adam estão a viver na casa da grande amiga de Gina, Annie. Ela é agora uma artista famosa que decidiu fazer um retiro. Na mesma altura ocorre um incêndio na casa do casal e, enquanto as obras decorrem, precisam de um lugar para habitar com os seus dois filhos. O timing acabou por ser útil a ambas.
Ainda nem 24 horas passaram na casa e alguém bate à porta. É Mary e intitula-se a governanta de Annie. Não querendo chatear a amiga no seu retiro, Gina acaba por ceder e rapidamente percebe que esta governanta tem o poder de ocupar muito espaço…
Iremos fazer algumas viagens ao passado de Gina e Annie, juntamente com outras duas amigas, porque obviamente, as peças irão encaixar até ao final do livro, resta saber de que forma!
Consegui identificar parte da situação e, quando me sentia vitoriosa por tal feito, levei uma rasteira, já que surgiu algo que não antevi e me surpreendeu! E eu gosto disso!
Em suma, gostei muito deste thriller. De escrita fácil, bem desenvolvido, teve esta capacidade de mexer comigo e ainda me reservou a surpresa no final, pelo que só posso recomendar a sua leitura!

You let her in...she wants you out...
WOW! Just wow! I love a good psychological thriller and this one hits all the marks and that ending just blew me away. While there was nothing overtly standout about it, it packed a powerful punch at the end. One that leaves you thinking about it long after you've closed the book. I admit, the climax was a tad OTT and requires some suspension of belief but overall it was still a fantastic read and worth every one of its stars.
The opening prologue leaves you wondering where this tale is going to take you while you flip the page and it's an about face as you look at the scrambled pieces of a twenty five year jigsaw and ponder just what is going on. Especially when the housekeeper comes knocking.
Gina and Matt, along with their two children - 3 year old tearaway toddler Tommy and newborn Gracie - find themselves temporarily homeless after Matt's inexpensive installation of a light fixture shorts and burns their house down. Thankfully, they were away with friend Laura for the evening. Not so good for their house or the problem with where they're going to live in the meantime. Their insurance covered a short hotel stay and would also cover a short term rental but they have been unable to find one.
And then they receive a lifeline. In the form of Gina's childhood friend Annie, now a successful singer and actress, who kindly offers them the use of her luxurious renovated home in Hastings while she is out of the country. Annie's kindness and generosity is a dream come true...until it became a nightmare.
No sooner have they arrived and have barely unpacked their bags when they receive an unexpected arrival. Enter Mary, Annie's housekeeper - "just pretend I'm not here". Gina is uncomfortable with having someone unfamiliar in the house with her and her two young children so she texts Annie to verify Mary is indeed who she says she is. She's relieved when Annie confirms this and that she is a godsend, having been with her for over a year. Gina is still a little unsettled, especially as Mary is there almost every day. Until one day Mary turns up with a suitcase and a teenager in tow, having escaped her abusive husband and had nowhere else to go. Knowing Annie wouldn't turn her away, Gina assures her that she's welcome to stay as there is plenty of room. Besides, she's in constant contact with Annie via text for confirmation on anything she is unsure of. Still, she can't escape the unsettling feeling she has around Mary. And her son Tyler just gives her the creeps.
If that wasn't all, Gina is having difficulty being back in Hastings and can't imagine why Annie would return to the place they grew up and escaped some twenty five years before when everything changed. When they were just fifteen and there were four of them. Gina, Annie, Laura and Sara - the GALS, as they called themselves. They all knew Matt from a distance; he was older by a year and was devilishly good-looking. Gina, Annie and even Sara all secretly were crushing for him. But being back here was playing on Gina's mind and she was reminded of what happened twenty five years ago and the missing member of their friendship circle.
But as the days turn into weeks, suspicions around Annie's seemingly competent housekeeper grow and Gina soon discovers some unsettling secrets about the woman, the house and the past...leading to the unsettling realisation of the danger she has unwittingly put herself and her family in.
Unfolding through Gina's, Mary's and "the past" narratives providing a deeper understanding of the characters and the layers of complexity to their stories. The author has peppered a lot of red herrings throughout and it is up to the reader to sift through them all as you begin to piece together the remaining jigsaw pieces for the bigger, clearer picture...leaving you shocked at the final twist, which is truly unexpected.
A fast paced read from start to finish, this is one of the author's best tales to date, despite the OTT climax leading up to the big reveal at the end. I was able to piece together pretty much all of it, even the unexpected twist we are given, but it was the epilogue that will leave you shocked and breathless. For me, that was a genius touch, leaving the reader with so many emotions about it all. It was the twist in THAT that I didn't see coming. The rest I had already figured out. Well done, Ms Hayes.
Overall, a fast paced suspenseful read that can easily be devoured in a day. But be prepared for the powerful mix of tragedy and happiness...and that jaw-dropping end.

Um livro de leitura fácil, fluida, alternância de personagens entre capitulos. Estes vão saltando entre a Gina, a Mary, o passado e o presente, enquadrando assim de forma perfeita o enredo.
✨ O que mais me tirou o fôlego neste livro foi que as bombas, de ficar com os nervos em franja, foram sendo lançadas ao longo dos capítulos, e não só no final , o que fez dele uma leitura viciante e constantemente termos momentos de What????
✨ Uma história onde retrata a força motriz que uma vingança pode ter, mas também nos fala de resiliência, amor, amizade e segredos.

Lê-se bem, mas bastante previsível. Antes de chegar a meio já tinha adivinhado todo o plot.
Ainda assim, tem um bom ritmo e prende bastante.

Este livro, para mim, veio mesmo na altura certa. É ideal para quem está numa "ressaca literária". Entretém, envolvemo-nos na história e parece que só queremos chegar ao próximo capítulo.
Posso não concordar com todos os "twists and turns" do livro, mas há uma coisa que a Samantha Hayes sabe fazer bem, e essa coisa é escrever!!!
É daquelas autoras que vou querer ler sempre.

Ici, on suit Gina, qui vient de voir sa maison brûlée et qui est donc hébergée chez Annie, son amie de longue date. Annie est en vacances, donc elle laisse la maison à Gina et sa famille. Mais, Annie a une employée de maison un peu envahissante et qui semble avoir des secrets…
J’ai tellement adoré ! J’ai passé un trop bon moment, j’ai dévoré cette histoire! C’est stressant, on a envie d’en savoir plus, on a envie de tout comprendre..
Je me suis doutée de certaines choses, mais j’ai quand même été de surprises en surprises. J’ai adoré la tournure des choses et la manière dont c’est raconté. C’est prenant, c’est bouleversant, c’est révoltant et c’est wow.
Chaque personnage est bien construit, avec ses peurs, ses traumatismes, ses attentes. Et la double temporalité ajoute vraiment quelque chose d’intéressant.
La fin est géniale. Même si on se doute de certaines choses, on ne se doute pas de tout. Et c’est wow.
Si vous avez aimé La femme de ménage, Toutes ses fautes ou Dans mon Ombre, celui-ci saura vous plaire ! C’est un très bon thriller, qui coche toutes les cases ! Foncez 😍

Een psychologische thriller die past in het rijtje van de boeken van Freida McFadden, Nelle Lamarr en BA Paris.
Gina en Matt komen met hun kinderen op straat te staan als hun huis afbrandt. Gelukkig kunnen ze tijdens de renovatie terecht in het huis van Ginas beste vriendin Annie, die op reis is. Nadat ze zich maar net gesetteld hebben, verschijnt er ene Mary in het huis, de huishoudster van Annie. Ze dringt zichzelf op bij het gezin. Eerst gewoon om het huishouden te doe maar later slaagt ze er ook in om in het huis in te trekken nadat ze problemen kreeg met haar man. Annie vindt alles OK dus Gina kan er niet veel over zeggen. Mary laat Gina overal aan twijfelen. Als de zoon van Mary dan ook nog eens opduikt en zeer vreemd gedrag vertoont, vertrouwt Gina niemand meer. Samen met haar andere vriendin Laura gaat ze op zoe naar antwoorden.
Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit verschillende perspectieven. In het heden hebben we Gina en Mary en dan is er nog een perspectief die een kijkje biedt in het verleden van Gina en haar vriendinnen. Ze had een vriendinnengroepje van 4 meisjes maar er bleken ook heel wat geheimen te zijn, die de personages nu nog steeds met zich meedragen.
Het boek heeft een eenvoudige, vlotte schrijfstijl. De spanning is in het begin van het boek wat aan de lage kant hoewel het verhaal zeker de nieuwsgierigheid wekt. Dat Gina geen naïef personage is, is positief maar eerlijk gezegd waren de personages in het algemeen niet zo sterk uitgewerkt en bleven ze redelijk aan de oppervlakte.
Door het aantal gelijkaardige psychologische thrillers die tegenwoordig verschijnen, wordt het al moeilijker om mij nog te verrassen. Het was bijgevolg een beetje voorspelbaar. Er zijn ook niet zoveel personages dus ik had al snel in het oog wat er aan de hand was. De wendingen waren dus niet helemaal onverwacht. Al volgde er gelukkig nog een epiloog waarin alle losse eindjes helemaal aan elkaar geknoopt werden.
Voor wie nog niet helemaal thuis is in dit soort thrillers, zal dit best wel een verrassende ervaring kunnen zijn.
