3.5 stars!!

Mending Michael was an incredibly sweet romance which touched home on love, family, finding your own path, and making your own choices.

Michael “Mick” Ross has a lot on his plate. After tragedy struck his household at a young age, he and his sister have had to fend for themselves since a young age. Now with said sister now finding herself in a pickle with the law and CPS, Mick now has to find a way to save his sister from her own path of destruction and his beloved niece from being taken away by child protective services forever.

Now enter Holiday “Holly” Buchanan. The girl with everything going for her. Or so it seems.

Holly is everything that Mick does not have. Money, a pristine family background and social standing, and a shining future.

What Holly does not have is control over her life. Everything is carefully mapped out for her by her over controlling father.

Can she break out of daddy’s thumb and succumb to her own dreams and desires?

Can Mick save his family from crumbling beneath him, or suffer an endless string of disappointments once more?

And when an ex-flame comes into the picture and tries to re-capture Mick’s heart, what will become of this unlikely couple?

Read and you will find out!

#Over all, a pretty tame romance from what I’m used to, but nevertheless, a very cute read!!

Mending Michael was a very clean read with themes of coming over loss, tragedy, scars of abandonment, infidelity, drug use, and pre-conceived misinterpretations and impressions we perceive of people.

--A great addition to this lovely series!!--

3.5 stars!

Mending Michael is the second book in the "Hunter Hill University" series but it can be read as a standalone. I haven't read the first book in this series, Calling California, but I will definitely read it!

One thing I liked about Mending Michael was that for the first time in a very long time, it might actually be the first time ever for me, I read a book without any fluff. Books I read usually have lots of fluff in them but I liked that there wasn't any of that in this book. It kind of fit in with the story somehow, I think.

I didn't like Holly AT ALL in the first chapters. I thought she was an annoying, spoiled little brat. Like these two examples from the arc version of the book;

But I did end up liking her!

She was controlled by her father. He'd made decisions for her all her life and she'd always listened to him but I'm glad that she finally told her father what she wanted. And I felt like she actually "grew up" more in the book. Example for the book;

I loved Michael. I absolutely loved him. He'd been through so much in his life and I felt so sorry for him!

I felt at times that both Michael and Holly seemed a bit immature but maybe that's just me. And Michael was sooo sweet!

Mending Michael is a sweet story and I really liked it!

To the publisher, author and NetGalley - Thanks again for the arc! :)

Right from the start…I was hooked! The story dealt with real issues that a lot of us can relate to! I got so wrapped up in Michael's story and my heart just broke for him on several occasions. J.P. Grider has an ease about her writing that allows the reader to get sucked up into the story. The "scene" when Michael explained about the pool was so full of imagery that I completed felt as though I were sitting next to him and Holly listening. I loved this story and I look forward to all of J.P. Grider's future stories!

I happened to read Mending Michael, the second book in the the Hunter Hill University series, before I read the first book in the series. Although it's a standalone and isn't dependent on reading Calling California first, I kind of wished I did because I found myself at times feeling like I missed out on something that would enlighten me about some of the preexisting relationships that surround Holly and Michael. That being said I still found it to be a good standalone read.
Michael, or Mick as he's more commonly referred to, is a bartender at his uncle's establishment with way more on his plate than the average college student. From the very beginning we can see that he has seemingly become the only responsible person left in his sister and beloved niece's life. When the only remaining love of his life is taken away from him he struggles to figure out how to get her back.
His unlikely ally comes in the form of the girl he hates. Holly Buchanan. Holly finds herself pulled into Mick's drama, yet surprisingly she wants to help though days before she wished to avoid him at all costs. It's easier to focus on helping Mick than trying to find the courage to stand up for what she really wants out of her own life.
The two of them soon find themselves entangled in a furious game of emotional tug of war. It's a bumpy ride to find out whether love or hate will win out in the end.

When I first began to read the book, one of my very first thoughts were. I really don't like this Holly character. It wasn't hard for me to empathize with Mick's dislike of her. I'm thinking that was a little bit of the author's intention because as the story develops, Holly is revealed to be really a very layered character. The way she expresses herself seems to frustrate her own self just as much as she frustrated me at times. She definitely surprised me as I felt a reversal and began to empathize with her much more than any other characters.

Mending Michael deals with some serious topics in the course of Mick and Holly's love story. I always grow wary of people falling in love when I begin to notice some red flags. But what I appreciated about the story was despite the "I want to be with you... but I won't/can't" is that the author made sure these issues were actually addressed by the characters. There was no sweeping serious problems under the rug and hoping that us readers forgot about them.
I am giving MENDING MICHAEL 3.5 Stars!

Mending Michael is the second book in the series and a standalone. Though I didn't read the first one first I almost wish I had. Though the second doesn't depend on the first, I always like to meet the secondary characters before they become main characters.

Okay so at first I wasn't really about this one. It's much more tame than I'm used to reading and it initially threw me off guard as I was expecting a lot more. After I realized it wasn't going to happen that way I stopped waiting and started enjoying this story.

It started off pretty slow for me as I wasn't really huge fan of Holly because she doesn't being as a likable character. Just wait it out. It gets better! After the first 40ish percent of the book I was completely hooked and could not put it down!

It's a perfect beach or transport read. Very sweet while maintaining serious themes. I loved how holly and mick both had different kinds of familial problems and that they were all addressed.

Overall: solid read, would recommend (but if I could go back I would read the first one first)

Part of series but can be read as a Stand alone. I did not read in order and was not confused. The main characters in the first book do not have a big impact of this story of Holly and Michael.

This was a well written story. More realistic romance than most out there. There is a lot going on with the characters and instead if jumping into a relationship to add to the drama, they try to wait. Holly and Mick were by no means ready for a relationship. His life was an utter mess. He did realize that in order to have a successful relationship, with Holly, he needed to fix his life. The author tackles a lot of things in this book. Drug and alcohol abuse, child neglect and family relationships. Even though, these are heavy subjects, we get to enjoy some lively, sometimes humorous dialogue between the characters. Overall an enjoyable read.

**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

Although this is the second book in this series, it can certainly be read as a stand-alone book.

I found this book easier to read than the first one and therefore read it much faster. The story even gripped me better and I felt it more.

Holly and Mick both have little issues, but it is ultimately Michael (Mick) that has the most growing up and changing to do before he is ready for the kind of relationship that he really wants with Holly.

The only thing that annoyed me was the constant pull-push of the duo where Michael declared he wanted her, then pushed her away saying that he was not ready yet and would Holly wait.

On the whole though, this was a much more rounded book than the first.

This book had no naughtiness in it which means it's safe for teens to read, a lot emotional stuff in the book. Mick that boy is an a***ole all the way I wanted to slap him and kick him at times he just needed to get his act together, I mean the boy does have a soft side and Holly knows how to hit on that side, "I'm sorry. I'm not big on apologies, so I suggest you accept it, before I take it back." Holly she has the patience of a damn saint I'm telling you she takes hit after hit where Mick is concerned and at times she's fun with brushing the hits off, "now buy me a cheeseburger. I'm hungry, and you owe me," I demand, pulling away from him." I liked this book, I liked that Mick needed to find his balls and do the right thing.

This was a great book! I thoroughly enjoyed Michael and Holly. Their banter was funny and edgy, and their blooming love heart-melting.

The characters grow through their love but also through external circumstances.
I particularly liked that serious issues (which I won't name because I don't want to spoil anyone's reading experience) were not glossed over, but given the proper attention.

As usual, J.P.Grider's writing flows beautifully, and it engrossed me from the first to the last page. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a story about love, courage and ultimately, mending hearts :)

*** obsessed by books arc given for an honest review * * *

I loved calling California, so I knew this one would be great too
Holly has always got what she's wanted, except what she wants for her future, she not sure what that would be, but her father already has her future mapped out.
Michael "Mick" has suffered a great loss and suffers from guilt of that loss. he is also trying to take of his niece.
These two don't like each other at all ,so when the attraction is noticeable that fight it, neither one wants to cave first.
can they let pride go and let love in.

Tiffany's Review:

Wow! What an emotional and powerful story! There were so many red flags for Holly but she never saw them, she only saw the good in Michael! Sometimes that is all it takes to save someone from their past. To say Mick, aka Michael has had a rough life is an understatement. Just when he thinks life can't get any worse is when Holly comes into his life. I thoroughly enjoyed their love story, as messed up as it was! I would highly recommend this book! I give it 4 stars.

I absolutely loved Mending Michael. It was such a quick read, I didn't want to up it down. I admit, I wasn't a fan of Holly at first, but in time, I really believed she could be very good for Michael. This book deals with some very serious issues, and little by little, michael's past unravels and your heart just aches for him. Holly really deserved more credit than I was willing to give her.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next book in the series.

Wow!!

I could not stop reading this book. It was well written and you feel as though you are apart of the characters. So many people have addiction that they are not aware they have until life throws you a curve ball and you are left picking up the pieces and trying to be strong for everyone and healing everyone of their problems. Sometimes the ones you think don't care prove to be the ones who care the most.

I loved this book. I especially loved the connection between Mick and Holly, Watching their relationship growing and them learning to trust each other. Mick has had a hard life and I'm glad he wanted to be with Holly bad enough that he got his life together. JP Grider can do no wrong in my book.

I received a review copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, let's start off with the cover. 5 freaking stars for the brilliant contrast of colours and the simplicity of the idea. This is the kind of cover that would grasp my attention in the bookstore when I'm looking for a romance novel.

With that aside, I thought Mending Michael (brilliant name, to add) was a great story that centred around a broken family and an impossible love relationship. Michael Ross and Holly are great characters to begin with, strong and independent despite being put through numerous hardships in life.

I love that Mending Michael is so family orientated that sets it apart from the rest of the romance novels (heh, don't you think the cover is deceiving? You're in for a heck of a ride!). To see how Michael fights for the better of his family was inspiring, it also reflected on how strong he is to put the weight of the world on his shoulders, and how selfless he was to push aside his needs and wants just to, quote "get his shit back together". Most men would crumble under the pressure, but he sought help, and that's what a logical person would do.

On the other hand, Holly was so very different! With her sarcasm as an impenetrable exterior to protect her inner vulnerability, I've grown to like her very quickly as she struts around confidently, even though it was just a façade. Her problems might not be as bad as Mick's, but the way she dealt with her demanding and dominating father excellently portrayed her independence and strength, besides being emphatic and soft hearted for injustice. I really adore Holly because I feel we are similar in so many ways, minus the dominating father of course :P

If you are looking for a romance novel that sweeps you off your feet, I assure you, this is not the book for you. Michael and Holly's relationship is anything but perfect, heck they spend most of the time apart! But in my opinion, it was necessary in so many ways, Mending Michael is more about finding the right life path than it is about romance. Nevertheless, it was real chemistry between those two and what I've learned? Time and distance does not keep true love apart. All the wait was worth it.

Unfortunately,

What I did not like was the fact that there was too much going on yet too little details in the plot despite it being a rather thick book. As the story was narrated from both Michael's and Holly's point of view, I was able to connect to the story more emotionally than I originally intent to, yet the switch from one POV to another sometimes happened too rapidly that it felt lacking and vague, and I often find myself wishing there was more to the chapters instead.

I also loved to see more development going on for the secondary characters. Kenna (Michael's niece), being a huge part of the story, was repetitiously mentioned throughout the book with a brief appearance here and there. She was supposedly featured as a character that induces strong emotions in Michael as he ferociously tries to fight his way in court to win his niece back, unfortunately I did not feel the family bond there, which was sort of a put off for me. I would also love to read more about Charity, Aunt Liv and Holly's best friends, which I think also plays a crucial part in the plot.

Apart from that, as much importance of Holly's character as suggested by the title, I still do not really understand the full impact of Holly's contribution towards Michael's recovery. I do appreciate that the author emphasized on self-willpower in dealing and solving with our own issues, however it was rather contradictory to the title and that small fact bothers me. I guess I was not really clear of the message the story conveyed.

Mending Michael was not flawless, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless, with a few good tears here and there!

I did not manage to read the first book in the series, but this is a perfect standalone. Looking forward to read the rest of the series! because really, one does not simply judge a series by a book!

A solid 4 stars because Michael and Holly's sizzling chemistry just had my heart in tangles!

When Holly first meets Michael, she is trying to get a drink in a bar with a fake id. It doesn't go well and their relationship only goes downhill from there. Torn between what she wants to do with her life and what her father wants, Holly starts working at the bar with Michael while trying to get her life on track. The more time they spend together, the more Holly realizes there is so much more to Michael than she knows and plenty of secrets that he is hiding but getting him to open up to her will be a long battle.

I thought this book had a great synopsis and I was excited to read it but I am sad to say I had a hard time with it. Holly rubbed me the wrong way right from the start and I had a hard time liking her for the majority of the book. Michael was like able from the beginning even though he has his supreme jerk moments. The characters themselves are well developed with good back stories that give them depth and it was well written.

Here is the biggest problem I had with it...this book is labeled as a New Adult Romance but in my opinion it wasn't really much of a romance at all. It is more a story of two people dealing with a lot of issues and how they work those issues out while supporting each other...or not supporting each other depending on the part of the story you are in. There are maybe four kisses and no sex. After the entire book, I was really disappointed to get one paragraph in the last chapter and it wasn't really even anything.

My thoughts:

POV switches between Holly and Michael
Quick hook or slow starter? 3 (I struggled with this one, it never really hooked me)
Character development: 4
Level of Romance between characters: 3
Passion/Heat level: 1 (as stated above only a handful of kisses and no sex)
Angst/Heartbreak: 4 (these two have all kinds of obstacles they are dealing with)
Cliffhanger?: Nope, this is part of a series but it is pretty much wrapped up in the end.

Overall, I was disappointed. It wasn't what I thought I was going to read...had I been expecting more of a YA read, I might have enjoyed it more.

I really did like this book in the beginning, and even throughout the middle. The end however, really just didn't do enough for me to rate it higher. I loved the sarcasm and back and forth between Mick and Holly as I was getting to know them as characters. At first I didn't really like Holly all that much, but as I got to know her home life and her personality, I started to like her a lot more. Mick grew on me slowly as well. He had a lot of demons in his past that he was still working through and because of that he carried around a lot of anger that often found itself misdirected at Holly. Even though they initially hate each other, for some reason they are drawn to one another. What made me give this book 3 stars was that there was so much push and pull between Holly and Mick, that when they FINALLY got together it just fell really flat for me. There was so much build up that I was expecting a bit more... not just ok, we're together now, the end. I also feel like there were a lot of secondary characters that were left in limbo. What happened to Rose? Her and Holly were best friends, then she goes home for the summer and we never hear from her again in the book at all. Also, the huge deal for Holly with her internship and major and dealing with her father really became a non-issue. I expected there to be a lot more drama with that part of the story. All in all, I feel like the story could have been more developed instead of it just being Mick saying he didn't deserve Holly and them both wanting to pretend to one another that they didn't miss each other or think of each other when they really did. It just got old for me.

Holly is a strong willed girl hiding her true self from everyone for fear of rejection. She has friends, who she lives dearly, but at the same time can't emotionally be their for them. She is going to college and her parents are paying for it but she's stuying for something that is only her father wants, to afraid to go against him and fear of losing her comfort she doesn't tell him. She does however start to see things in a new way when her friend rose tells her to work to for own money. So she starts working at her local hangout with Michael the bartender who's always hated her for reasons she feels is the fake id she tried to get away with three years ago.

Micheal has so much going on in his life, the last thing he can think of is a girl, but holly has always made him feeling and want things he could never have, or so he thought. With his parents out of the picture and his sister bringing an unfit parent he tries to raise his nice, but can't seem to keep her in his grasp when social services comes. So he goes into a downward spin and who's there to catch him other then holly.

As time goes on and they spend time together they start to feel for one and other like they never have for anyone else. There's a connection they can't explain but a need to keep their distance. But when Michael finally reveals how he really feels about her but tells her he's not the man she needs and he needs to fix himself first, their worlds start to turn upside down.

With drugs, alcohol, regret, love and so much more can these two find eachother , can they let love win and move on with their lives, or will they forever live in regret?

I've taken a couple days to really figure out if I enjoyed this book or not. I still can't really decide so I'm going with a 3 out of 5 stars, kind of middle of the road, meh type feeling.

I normally love the concept of two people who hate each other actually learning about the other and falling in love. One of my favorite plots. However, this novel disappointed me.

I think what I really didn't enjoy was the characters themselves. Holly rubbed me the wrong way from the very first sentence about her. She was selfish and a snob and pretty bitchy. I understand she leads a privileged life and that had something to do with the way her character acted. She did grow on me a little throughout the story as we learn more about her and why she acts the way she does but it never felt like enough for me to actually change my opinion about her. Michael wasn't as bad but still not someone I would want to associate with. Seriously the guy has some temper issues and those never really went away.

The two of them together were just explosive, and not in a good way. Why in the world would I want someone to call me a bitch and then try to kiss me. Also, they both felt immature for their age to me. The kicking sand, the name calling, etc etc. They are suppose to be adults!

I did enjoy the parts about the family and the message of overcoming addiction and guilt. That was all written well. In fact, I enjoyed the writing style as well. The plot flowed and was an easy read. If the characters had been better I would actually recommend the book. Like it is now however, I would not.

Let me just say that the promise of this story is great unfortunately the execution didn't quite turn out as good.

The struggles that these characters go through is so realistic that it really makes you feel for Mick and Holly. You really want to see them fight for themselves but also for eachother.

What didn't work for this book was there was just to many misunderstandings. Normally that wouldn't bother me but in the case of this book they don't actually get together until the very end. On top of that Holly is a virgin and everything pertaining to the actual romance is brushed under the rug since its at the very end so it spoils it.

With this author's writing style it made it hard to read. Not only for the grammatical error but also for her trying to add in words or phrases that just didn't fit in with the story line. I feel like half of the book could be cut out and this would only make the book better.

I really felt that this book wasn't a romance at all. There was a struggle for them to be together but there was too much inner dialogue and not enough of them actually overcoming their issues in order to be together. I fell as though the author dragged out issues and inner turmoil just to make the book longer. I really wanted to actually see Holly and Mick as a couple not just struggling to become a couple.

This book could have been amazing but for me it just fell flat.

Mick Ross and Holly Buchanan hate each other from the moment she walks into Donny's bar with a fake I.D. He refuses to serve her and she responds in a not-so-lady like manner. After Donny hires Holly as a waitress, their disdain for each other grows daily as they sling insults as well as drinks. But if Mick is truly honest with himself, he'll have to admit that his adverse reaction to Holly is really because she makes him feel emotions that he would rather keep buried. When Holly calls Mick on his behavior and they agree to be friends, they realize that the feelings they have for one another are more quite intense. But Mick's dealing with a lot of family drama, personal demons, and a past that comes back to haunt him. He doesn't think he deserves to be happy and although Holly agrees to wait until he gets his act together, she just might get tired of him pushing her away.

I absolutely loved this story and these characters. My heart went out to Mick and I felt so sorry for him. With all of the struggles he was facing and the trials that he had to overcome, he stayed positive and was determined to do whatever he had to do to become a better person. I didn't like Holly at first but her character evolved throughout the story and she eventually grew on me. I wouldn't consider this a NA book but it does have some mature content. Either way, it's a well written book and a good read!

Solid 3.75 stars in my book. I received this copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book in Grider's Hunter Hill series, so while reoccurance of characters are there, this book's focus is on Michael "Mick" and Holiday "Holly". Not really sure I'd call it Mending Michael as Holly has her own battle that needs conquering too and with the split povs, both characters take center stage. The book moved slowly in the middle because there was an additional plot line that was added which I don't think was necessary to the storyline. I did appreciate the fact that Grider made sure both characters addressed their personal issues before coming together because often society says we need another person to fulfill us and results in only half a person being committed to the relationship if we're broken to begin with. Also this book is not riddled with sex but a good NA plot with lots of subcharacter interaction and dialouge.
Also Mick is rough and a bartender so the cover model looks way too sweet for the picture in my head.
It was a good read, albeit a bit slow for my tastes.

Mending Michael was such a heartbreaking story for me. It was incredible. I love the plot and the characters. Everything was detailed and written amazingly well. It definitely got me hooked so fast from start to finish. I couldn't put it down!
This story follows Michael and Holly, never liked each other from the beginning but suddenly things changed between them. Walls broken down. Secrets revealed. Loving unexpectedly.
Yes! I LOVED IT. I really appreciate how Michael went through character growth throughout the book.
I AM DAMN PROUD OF HIM! (My new fictional boyfriend! Haha!)
The ending was everything. That's all I have to say.
A MUST READ!
Anyway, this book made me so emotional
I was fangirling then sobbing my heart out the next. I was a WRECK!
I look forward to reading more from this J.P. I can't wait to reread this again and definitely start reading the whole series!
I highly recommend !

One thing this book surprised me with was that there wasn't really any "fluff" or "beating around the bush". I didnt find myself skimming through pages or chapters for that matter.

Micheal, Micky, Mick, Mikey - Oh my damn does this lad have demons that haunt. Poor guy cant catch a break. First he has to deal with his dead beat parents who have more alcohol stocked in the house than milk and he has had to look after his sister since a very young age. Mikey does not realize that he has a drinking problem because he's always had to fix everybody else in his family.

Holly - My my does this young lady have some sass. although, when it comes to daddy dearest she doesnt as much as make a peep. She is Mikey's only support system. Just by being with her he feels better.

There is so much emotion, love and hatred in this book. Great read and very well written characters. Grider did a great job with this one.

Got this book in exchange for a honest review... Felt like I was watching a romantic drama movie. At every turn something was happening, I never thought that Michael and Holly were going to get together. At first I didn't know if I was going to like the book, but at the end the book had some really good messages in it. These two judged the outside before the got to know the inside, and once they started to get to know each other then more they understood that they need each other. Micheal didn't have an easy life as a kid or young adult and Holly just didn't have enough confidence in herself to stand up to her father for what she wanted. I really felt bad for Micheal and the things in went thru. I'm glad that he picked himself up and got help that he need. Only thing that I disliked about this book was that it took SO LONG for them to get together. Other then that, It was a good book, definitely would read the other book in this series.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Mick and Holly are opposites that attract. I can see them having a relationship, to me it works. Mick has a LOT of baggage, skeletons in his closet, secrets, issues, etc. Holly needs to learn to fight for what she wants even if that means going against Daddy. I loved that both characters discover themselves and overcome their issues. But, some things did fall flat for me. All the secondary characters and the different nicknames for each character got a little confusing. I liked the story but I think there was a little too much drama if that's possible. Or maybe each character just had too much drama. Not quite sure.
Don't get me wrong. The overall story was good, i enjoyed it. Mick and Holly have fun banter when they aren't trying to aggravate each other (or hell even when they aggravate each other). Give it a try, it is a HEA.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I'm a little on the fence with this one. I liked it overall as an okay to good read. I appreciate the drama, the heaviness of the situations they find themselves in but it was really hard to like the characters. I typically like hot messes because they make for great entertainment and add to the drama but they were just too emotionally draining and what I got from it was a great appreciation for my own life and family. The wishy washy bipolar like interactions gave me whiplash and I truly believe that was intentional but it was a bit much for me to really enjoy the fullness of the drama.

I was given an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Holly and Michael's character just don't fit in any other way but that's what makes them a good couple. Although, I hate the push and pull between their relationship. It is so obvious that there's a thing between them, even admitted it to themselves nut I just don't understand as to way Michael still dont like Holiday to let her in. And plus plus I am so thankful for his aunt to rescue the situation although it's so funny because Holly have to be jealous at her at first. It's a fine boon for me and maybe might recommend it to my peers.
