I received this book as part of arc goodreads. I did not grow up playing tennis, and when I finally a tennis unit in high school what I could do was based on what I had watched on TV,how the pros did it. I wish there had been manuals like this one. I find this manual very readible, and he really breaks down the game piece by piece, including stance, practice, drill. I viewed some videos online and he shows you what he is talking about. As he mentions, tennis is hard work, and it is not easy.

I highly recommend this title.

Super comprehensive.

Very comprehensive. Full of good info. It should be read in full as it could be slightly better organized, but if you read it all, you will get full exposure to Nick's expertise. It definitively changed my game for the better, as well as my kids' games.

I received this book from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review....

In all honesty, I don't know how this book would apply to me. I don't play tennis (or any sport for that matter). I've never played tennis. No one in my family plays tennis. In fact, no one in my family plays sports at all. We are a computer-science and reading-nerd type of family, where we grew up spending our days with our noses buried into pages instead of getting exercise. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved it growing up. We are just not an athletic family (and I still don't get why we were all not obese for it either).

Anyway, I did attempt to read this. It's a lengthy book full of all-things-tennis. Would be great for someone who actually has an interest or desire to play tennis, or to get better at their game. Which isn't me in the least bit. When I find that person who enjoys tennis, I shall pass this along to them. In the meantime, I'll give it an "average" rating and move on with my life.

I'm a fan of Human Kinetics sports books, and this one lives up to my past experiences. In fact, it's now my favorite tennis handbook, taking lead position on a full shelf about the sport. Nick clearly has the experience about teaching tennis, having coached multiple top-ranked players. What convinces me of the value of his advice here is that he distills it down so that anyone can understand the concepts. A ten--year old would get it, and he often comments about teaching the tips to famous players when they were still in the juniors or younger. Likewise, he seems to have gleaned a lot of his insights by watching early players to see what they did naturally and then translating that into what works.
