This was a brillant debut book. Although it started off slow and had me struggling to connect, the last few chapters made up for all of that.
Had to scale up my rating just for that reason.
Looking forward to the conclusion of their story and hope to see some vengeance.

Harper Ray first released Behind The Mask in April 2020; it’s since been reworked and given a swanky new cover. I never got around to reading the original, so this review is based entirely on the revised 2022 edition of the book.
Olivia’s story is both heartbreaking and tragic, but I couldn’t relate to Axel at all. When Olivia first left him, back when they were still teenagers, Axel’s reaction probably wasn’t the most constructive course he could’ve taken. In the five years since, he’s supposedly grown up and gotten over Olivia, falling in love with a fiancé who has helped him to learn to love again. Except that when he and Olivia reconnect and things become challenging, he reverts to the angry teenager he once was. He hasn’t grown up at all and his behaviour is a stark contrast to all that Olivia has had to learn to deal with.
Reading Olivia’s flashbacks and her current struggles, I felt every moment of her pain. In romance novels, there’s a tendency to rush past the after-effects of sexual assault and gloss over the consequences of events. Ray doesn’t do that and she doesn’t hold back explaining just how damaging Olivia’s experiences have been. It’s by no means easy reading; it’s raw and honest but thoroughly agonising.
The first 3/4 of the book is slow-paced, focusing more on retelling the past than moving the story forward. It’s necessary though. Without this part of the story, the final quarter would be near-meaningless and considering so much is crammed into those final chapters it’s worth waiting to get to that point.
It’s rare that I comment on an author’s choice to spread a story across multiple books but this time I have to speak up. I can see why Ray has decided to split this story (and it splits in the perfect place) but at only 157 pages long, it feels like it could easily have been a single book written in two parts. In any event, you won’t have long to wait until book two, Behind The Lies releases on 5 February. In fact, that’s just enough time to read this book.

Whew! I did not even know where this book was going but it will definitely take you for a ride. Olivia Banks in back in her hometown. The hometown she was forced to run away from. This story is crazy from the beginning until the end. Olivia ended it with her long-time boyfriend, Axle Kade, so he could pursue his dreams. Axle could not possibly be sitting in her parent’s house with his fiancé. Life could not possibly get much worse, right? That's what Olivia thought until she opened the door to her worse nightmare. He was still there taunting her. She was never supposed to come back. This was her life and she refused to run from it anymore.
Axle was home to plan his wedding. He had a successful career as a baseball player for the Rangers and a beautiful fiancé. Everything was going good until her saw her. Olivia has always been the love of his life. The one he compared every woman he has ever dated. He needs closure. He has to know why she broke up with him. The pull is strong. Just one look, one touch, and both are back to when they were together. Axle is ready to blow up his life for Liv but he needs to know it all. Is Axle willing to tell her everything in return?
The masks these people have on are unbelievable. The things people do for love. I fell in love with this couple and I am anxiously waiting for part two. I know it is going to be brutal but I have to know if they will survive everything that has happened. Another great one Ms. Ray.

At only 157 pages, this one packs a punch. I am a bit conflicted here, so let me explain why.
Firstly, this is a super quick and easy read. There's a lot happening, but there was never a moment where I was confused about the story or what was happening. That said, there is A LOT happening here. Axel is a man of many talents. He's apparently a baseball star, ruthless fighter, and absolute heartthrob (he's also one other thing by the end of the book, but no spoilers). Olivia on the other hand was only defined by her assault and a brief mention of liking to dance.
I genuinely feel that if this would've been a bit longer, we could've further explored our MC's backgrounds and made the story a bit more cohesive and enjoyable. That's not to say I did not enjoy the overall story. The last chapter and epilogue? I am on the edge of my seat! I just wish this had a little something more to put it over the top for me.

I love a good second chance, Axel and Olivia were meant to be! Axel and Olivia were your typical high school sweetheart when tragedy tore them apart. There love lasted through heartbreak, tragedy, and horror. They totally deserved the ended they had, cant wait to read more of there story and see what is in store for them. Harper Ray started off with a bang, cant wait to see where all the rubble falls!

Axel and Olivia have an engrossing second chance romance that is entertaining and difficult to put down. This is a story filled with pain and heartaches with so many emotions. This is well written and an incredible story. I cannot wait to read the next story in this duet!

Beautifully heart-wrenching
We all hide a part of ourselves, hurt or pain, and for some, it goes a lot deeper than that. Author Harper Ray peels back the layers on two young lovers who have been friends since forever, and whose lives together seemed set in stone, until secrets and threats blew their plans out of the water, and the consequences had far reaching affects.
At the Prologue when I couldn’t even imagine the secret that Olivia was keeping, but my heart was broken for both her and Axel, and I could barely keep my emotions in check. From there on in, it was an amazing read and I don’t know if I can even tell anyone in words adequately enough just how much of a beautifully heart-wrenching story this truly was.
For a start, it’s a second-chance romance written in my favourite dual POV and Axel had not only grown into a gorgeously handsome alpha-male, but he’s a famous baller and infamous MMA fighter due to the heavy baggage Olivia left him with when she left him with no explanation. Check, check and check.
I believe that Ms Ray has written Olivia beautifully and sensitively. Her choices right or wrong were nothing short of heart-breaking and the written ‘gut-wrenching heartbreak’ when they see each other for the first time in five years had my own heart dropping like a heavy stone in my chest. I hit this book in one sitting, and I knew going in that there’s another book. So many hooks have been left and the veneer of those who affected Olivia and Axel’s future has only just started to be lifted. Those 5-year-old threats to Olivia, Axel and her family are going to be carried out it seems...
I tell you; it is absolutely hard to believe that this is Harper Ray’s book baby, her debut release. It was my lucky day to have been introduced to this author’s book through a book friend, and I am desperate for more. Off I stalk! Absolutely 5 Stars for this book 💔

NOOO!!! I did not even see a cliffhanger coming when I started this. I somehow missed that is was book 1 of a duet until halfway through and then I went “oh no...I bet...” yep. I was right. Now I’m left on the edge of my seat pulling my hair and screaming. Haha
I very much enjoyed this book and devoured it in mere hours. It is full of angst, sympathy, mystery, and thrills (both in the sexy way and the nail biting way). I was initially annoyed with Olivia because of her approach to things, I wanted to scream at her to just stop being so...ARGH!!!! Same with Axel at some points, to be honest. HOWEVER, i just couldn’t put this book down. I had to see what would happened next! Of course, now I’m still left with questions but that’s how you know you have a solid story on your hand, right? It leaves your readers wanting more. ;)
Needless to say, I cannot wait for book 2!!!

Olivia and Axel grew up together and have always loved each other. No matter how much Olivia loved him she knew she had to leave him to protect him and her family. After five long years she’s coming home and little does she know Axel is home too. There are so many secrets between them but Olivia knows she has to tell him the truth of why she left if she ever wants to make things right between them. The question is will they get their happy ever after or will there be too many obstacles to overcome.
I just have to say WOW! This book was just everything! Every emotion you can think of is in this book. I was completely hooked from the very beginning and absolutely couldn’t put it down until I was finished. I loved Olivia and Axel so much. Olivia is such a sweetheart and has been through pure hell. Axel is the sexy alpha and together they just make the most perfect couple ever. Their story is a story of such heartache and pain. I really truly loved this story and I can’t wait to see where book two goes.

Behind the Mask held my attention from the very first page. There was something about Olivia and Axel’s story that was so dark, captivating, and suspenseful.
Behind the Mask is a second chance, dark, contemporary, romantic suspense and it was brilliant. The use of the past via flashbacks dispersed between moments of the present when Olivia and Axel meet again after five years was excellent. There were some details that were slightly repetitive and confusing, but other than that the way the mystery and secrets unraveled was fabulous.
The characters are beautifully written.They’re multidimensional, broken characters. Harper Ray has conveyed their underlying darkness in a heart wrenchingly, haunting way. Olivia and Axel are soulmates, but their path is one that’s full of pain, darkness, and secrets. The Masked Duet has started off with a bang and I can’t wait to see what happens with Olivia and Axel’s story.

So this book had me a little confused a lot. I was in and off in the book because I couldn’t get into it at all. Have no idea why. I was on and off with why did this happen, like really that is stupid, and what not. But I finally did finish it and well can’t say I’m disappointed. I was disconnected with it at first but the last few chapters made a whole of a lot of difference with what I was thinking of the book. I was finally able to get into it and all the juicy details as to what had happened to Olivia. I kind of knew a little of what had happened because it was a bit obvious, but I didn’t know half of the stuff she was hiding nor did I know that Axel was hiding anything at all. He just seemed so sweet and nice and everything the good guy besides his temper. I just didn’t know how dumb I was really. Regardless of everything. It was a pretty good book and I’m just wondering what is going to happen in the next one.

More than just a second chance, Olivia and Axel's story is about over coming something that tore their lives apart, that drove her to leave her family and Axel, to lie and protect, to try and move on while still fighting the demons that drove her away. Olivia is strong and shattered all at the same time, trying to keep her head above water while she moves on with her life. Axel tries to move on but with Olivia showing back up it brings everything he felt for her back to the surface, plus Axel is keeping some secrets of his own that will come to light. This story is filled with love and hate, anger and fear, deception and mystery, this book took me all over the place and left me wanting more. I cannot wait for book 2!

Please read trigger warnings before starting. Wow this book had me in my feelings from page 1! Olivia broke up and ran from Axel and her parents when she was 18. Now she's returning home, broken and fragile, where she runs Axel. They both have secrets and demons they are fighting, plus hiding secrets and truths which come to the surface. This book ends on a cliffhanger and need to know what happens next!

Wow, this was an absolutely amazing read and I can't wait to read the rest of the story! Olivia goes through her own trauma and leaves the love of her life, Axel, and her family to protect them. After coming back home and seeing Axel again the chemistry between them is off the charts. This was an emotional and steamy read with plenty of twists and surprises. I absolutely loved the characters and how real they were with their emotions and reactions. The author did a fantastic job handling some very sensitive topics and I can't wait to read more!

Do you ever want to throw your kindle across the room after finishing a book? I’ve honestly never wanted to more, in one of the best, most frustrating ways because cliffhangers are the bane of my existence. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED this story from Harper and I’m going to be impatiently waiting for the second book to this duet. This book had twists and turns like you wouldn’t believe and has themes that are darker, so please read the trigger warnings before continuing. Olivia and Axel have a tumultuous relationship and history with each other but they truly love one other, even if they don’t show it. Im ready to see the growth both of them go through in the next book and where the story will take us. I’m ready for book 2!

The book does come with a warning: "While this book is a second chance love story, it has vulgar language, vivid sex scenes and mention or rape with flashbacks."
This is the first book of Harper's that I have read and it definitely won't be my last. I was pulled in from the very first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. Axel and Olivia are both broken but you can't help but root for them to be together so they can help heal each other.
The cliffhanger left me begging for more. I can't wait for the next book in the series Behind The Lies to be released so I can get the rest of Axel and Olivia's story.
I would recommend this book if you like second chance romances or romantic suspense.

I don’t think I have read a book in so long with absolute raw emotions like Behind the Mask. I highly recommend reading the trigger warnings before going into this book.
From everything from pain, loss, broken hearts. You could still see how much love Olivia and Axel had for each other through the pages! Everything they felt from years ago came back in a full on wind storm. Axel was very understanding and supportive with Olivia, she definitely needed her true love to finally find the last step to her healing. I think it will take a while to heal myself from that cliffhanger.
I would give so many more stars if possible!! This is my first read from Harper Ray and she did not disappoint! I can’t wait for the next one. Then all of the rest to come after that!

The book from the very start will keep you tuned in. You will not be able to keep the book down until you finish it. It is full of steamy romance and unforeseen turn of events that will make run home. LOL!
At one point you will have roller coaster ride of emotions and you will..... I'm not gonna say anything - my lips are sealed. Although, my tongue is itching to reveal the part but nooo not gonna do that. and what spoil the thrill for you - N O FREAKING WAY.
Instead, I will just let you buy this sexy book and read it for yourself.
I have already read the online version and waiting for the Paperback.
There is another thing I like about the author is all her covers are so sexy. Now, come on who wouldn't want such sexy looking guys on their shelves. LOL!!

This book was heartbreaking and amazing ♥️ I absolutely fell in love with Olivia and Axel’s story!!! They were both amazing characters. I loved the storyline, also. I found myself rooting for Olivia and Axel!! This is the type of story that really sticks with you 😢♥️ I’m so glad this was written in dual POV, so you get a real understanding of what each character is going through, and how they feel ♥️

Wow. Great book. So much happened to Olivia. She was all the much stronger for all she went through. Axel was the love of her life and she had to let him go. You didn’t find out until much later in the book as to why. This is a must read. I can’t wait for the next book to find out what happens. Axel went through a lot as well and he was super confused as to why Olivia left. Once she told him he stuck by her side.

She needed to move on from her past, she was grabbing her life back, taking control and ensuring she was living for herself, she wasn't going to let other people control what she did, where she lived, she wasn't going to be controlled any longer. Olivia's life was hers and hers alone, scars and all. It didn't matter. She knew that moving on wasn't easy, especially when the man who stole your heart as a child showed up at your parents' house, a pretty new fiancee hanging on his arm. Shocking, there isn't a pretty new bow on her.
In between balancing all the skeletons that Olivia has shoved in her closet and the feelings that linger for Axel, feelings she knows she can't have, feelings that she has to shove into her closet with all her other skeletons. Olivia just hopes that her life doesn't get any more overwhelming.
Olivia thought that she had finally found peace. That her life was finally hers again. That is, till the threats start to pour in again. But, this time, there is something different in them. This time, the threats come with a deadly promise attached to them.
This is the first Harper Ray book that I've read. I just learned that Behind the Mask was first published in 2020 and has since been rewritten and reworked and given this beautiful new cover, one that I just love and think is so perfect and just fitting. Having read this version, I kinda wish that I had read the original so I could compare the two, but I am so thrilled that I got to read this copy, and I just love it.
Olivia's story, it broke my heart over and over again. It was just tragic at times, and Axel just pissed me off so many times. When Olivia first left him as a teenager, Axel behaved as expected, but it wasn't constructive. Over the following five years, apparently he's grown up, or so he says, claiming he's gotten over Olivia, and apparently he's in love with his fiancee, a women who helped him learn to love again and get over Olivia.
Here's the problem I have with that, when he reconnects with Olivia, things become challenging, and he becomes this angry teenager again, proving that he hasn't really grown up like he claims.
In reading Olivia's flashbacks and then coming back to her current struggles, I could feel. Every. Single. Moment of her pain. I have found, and this is a personal opinion, that in romance novels, there is this tendency that authors have, to rush past all the side-effects of sexual assault and authors tend to gloss over all the consequences of those events.
I love Ray because Ray doesn't do that. She holds nothing back, and she explains just how damaging Olivia's experiences have been. It's not easy to read. It's so raw and honest, and it can be triggering to some people, but it's honest and thoroughly agonizing.
I can be honest and say that maybe 3/4 of this book is slow-paced. But, I appreciate this. This is so that you can focus on retelling the past, and the reader can understand the past and how everything came to be. At this point, the story is only slowly moving forward. Understanding the past is necessary. Without knowing the past, the final 1/4 of the book would mean absolutely nothing. It wouldn't make any sense. And there is so much crammed into those final chapters that having the patience to get through the slow parts to get to that, it's just so worth it.
I love this story line, I love these characters, the character arcs, I love their story arcs, I love the plots, and the sub-plots. I love how thoughtful this duet was thought out. I can understand why it was broken up. Yes, at 157 pages, it could have been kept as 1 book. But, there is so much information packed into this book that having the books split gives us a chance to breathe before the next book comes out. Behind the Lies releases February 5, 2025.
