Carry A Faerie #1

Did It Have To Be Gnomes?!

Rate this book
Am I afraid of gnomes? Maaaaaaaybe.

Did I take on a huge gnome job anyway? I sure did.

Am I about to ask my crush for help? Well, I have to ask someone, right?

I get called out to a huge mansion with the biggest number of invading gnomes I’ve ever seen, and I’m not sure who to call to help. And I definitely need some help.

So when Winter Montgomery just so happens to stop by, I know I have to ask him. I’ve been crushing on the handsome guy from afar for years, so now’s my chance to get close—and get some much needed support.

As long as I don’t let him see just how much I hate gnomes—okay, I’m actually terrified of them, but he doesn’t need to know that… right?

Did It Really Have To Be Gnomes?! (Carry A Faerie Book 1) is a MM urban fantasy and the first book in Miles and Winter’s love story. Each book will have its own supernatural problem with a HFN ending for the couple, but there will be overarching plot themes throughout the series.

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.

She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

My-My, what a lovely funny and tenderly book.
If you like your mm-romance with a ton of magic, then this series will be a must read.
Also, it’s kind of ridiculous. Gnomes … I will never ever look at garden gnomes the same. Hopefully I will not have nightmares.
One warning, this first book ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, not a bad one, but I screamed when I turned the page and suddenly noticed that there was nothing written there. The story of this first book is finished properly and the relationship is perfectly well. So, not a bad cliffy.
In the middle, the story drags a bit. There is quite a lot of dialogue and little plot development. So perhaps it's more of a 4-star book, but I can't help it, I just had too much fun with this book and was grinning the whole time, so I'm rounding up.
In addition to all the magical and extraordinary things that happen here, it is the story of a cautious reunion between Miles and Winter. As teenagers, they had a mutual crush that lasted for many years, but neither of them knew about it.
I think it's wonderful how attracted they are to each other and how they complement each other so beautifully on a magical level, yet still try to take things slowly. It made me feel all mushy and swoony. Even though there's not much to see apart from wonderful kisses and a little bit of messing around.
But there's such a beautiful spark between them, I'm sooooo excited to see how it continues.
Damn, I really should stop starting new series that are just coming out.

Gnomes.
I trembled in revulsion.
Blech.
Uggggghhh.
They were so fucking gross.
I had no clue why anyone would ever call those things cute.
🤭

The males and females both had long beards, so you couldn’t tell them apart unless you came across one that didn’t wear clothes, and you got a sight you couldn’t unsee. 🫣

Winter’s eyes met mine, and I just about melted on the spot.
Fuck, how did someone have eyes that pretty? They were ice blue, like his name implied, and filled with so much… depth. His shaggy blond hair flopped in his face, and he always did this head flip thing to move it out of his eyes, and for some reason, that just really did it for me.
🤩

He was the perfect size for me to lift him in my arms and carry around… carry him to bed and throw him on it, then cover him with my body, and— 🫠🫠🫠

Closing my eyes, I let myself sink into his arms, pushing all my fears and doubts aside, loving the warmth and comfort of a simple hug.
Simple hugs weren’t something I’d ever had in my life, and I wasn’t sure Winter knew how much I appreciated it.

Well, this was fun!
The story is told in dual pov (Miles and Winter), first person past tense, is fast paced, very entertaining and ends with a tentative hfn and a minor cliffhanger (I usually hate cliffhangers but this one didn't bother me at all).

The plot was interesting, something I hadn't yet read about:
A faerie exterminator (Miles) with magical abilities (he's an empath) gets help from his crush Winter (he's a null, he counteracts any magic), Winter's best friend Lyric (he's a sentire, can sense and identify magic) and the two teenagers Chaos and Aeson (a necromancer and his twin brother) against a curse that turns funny little gnomes in angry bloodthirsty pests.
And oh yes, there were MANY gnomes.

Thank you Drusilla for the rec! ❤️

I had so much fun reading this and I can't wait for book two!

This was my first Michele Notaro book, plus my first Gnome book, and I really enjoyed it.

Miles is a character that I can't wait to find out more about. Will he get his full training now? What happened with his old job? Will he freak out when he finds the gnome... 😂

I really liked Winter too and I'm looking forward to getting more of his back story too. The way he cares for Miles and is just a caretaker in general was so sweet.

Lyric is hilarious and I cannot wait to see what mayhem they cause, and I am so intrigued by Chaos and Ace and I want to know what their situation is - I definitely got the same mother hen urge that Miles did with them 😂

I hated when people invaded my space because their emotions were always so loud. But with Winter, he was like a peaceful lake—calm, quiet, and serene.

An empath exterminator for paranormal creatures, a sweet romance, ALL THE CUTE ANIMALS, the most adorable found family. I’m in love.

This was so much fun, minus the gnomes. (I agree with Miles, they’re creepy!)
Carry A Faerie will hopefully become an awesome and hilarious urban fantasy series, if the rest will be anything like this first installment.

Full of comforting vibes and a magical cast, a world that just makes me want to live in it, a fun lighthearted plot but still filled with emotion.
The romance was a sweet slow burn and I really can’t wait for more Miles and Winter, the friends they made along the way and, of course, their lovely animals.

Simple hugs weren’t something I’d ever had in my life, and I wasn’t sure Winter knew how much I appreciated it.

This was A LOT of fun, with a fresh spin to the whole "sups are us" topic.

I absolutely loved this world, where being a sup / witch/whatever is perfectly normal, and you need professional "exterminators" to clean up gnome infestations (gnomes being small, usually naked, wearing hats, and wreaking havoc). It's so hilarious at times, I couldn't help but laugh out loudly, so thank you, Angelika and Drusilla, for making me pick up this book.

Is it perfect? Not really, especially the romance-part between Miles (a powerful empath, working as an exterminator), and his highschool crush Winter, is all too easy. They immediately feel couple-y, there's no tension or pining worth mentioning. Bun funnily enough, it worked anyway, because the surrounding plot, the very interesting side characters/found family, and even the sort-of-cliffhanger (and the gnome in the cereal box) are too funny and wholesome to really miss the romance.

I had fun reading it, and that's what counts, right? I listened to the audio btw, and Zachery Zaba is new to me. He's no NJR or Greg B., but he's good to listen to.

All in all - solid 4 stars. I'll wait for the audio though for the next book, I hope we'll get it soon :)

It was left on the biggest cliffhanger of my life, and I’m a little upset about that, but it was a really good book. I really enjoyed it. The characters were really nice. The couple was enjoyable. It was really witty. It had great banter though out the story. I will say I didn’t expect the ending. It was a big cliffhanger the secret about his previous job was huge. Honestly, there has to be a second book. I’m pretty sure it hasn’t come out yet and that really bumps me out. But a really great read highly recommend.

I had a nice time with this book. I like the found-family trope and a bit magic is never a bad thing. The idea to add faery beings as something pest control has to care about is just the right kind of hilariousness I didn't know I like to read right now. I probably will look at gnomes differently after this book. Usually the guys would be too sweet for my taste but although it's no Holiday story, it's still the season for this adorable sweetness, so who cares. After all the author added for each of them a tragic backstory and let the romance between Miles and Winter evolve naturally from secret high-school crush to more or less accidental colleagues years later. Do I have to add that there are adorable pets and familiars included? The plot itself could need a bit more action and challenges.

Miles, who owns a magical pest company, and is known for his humane catch and release policy, gets called into remove a gnome infestation at a ginormous mansion. The kicker? Miles is terrified of gnomes!

With the aid of his former high school crush turned neighbor, Winter, who just so happens to work for a rival pest control company, the two uncover a curse on the house that has turned the normally docile gnomes into angry little psychos.

Honestly, this was seriously so cute and fun! Miles and Winter were precious, and I loved that their story was a blend of sweet romance and magical mystery.

Cannot wait for more of this series!

This was so cute and fun! Very low spice, but really I didn’t miss it. Winter and Miles are adorable together and the book ended right as their relationship was starting. I enjoyed the magic system in this book, it wasn’t too overly complicated- which was perfect for me. I loved the little found family and can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!

I was pretty excited to see this series be announced, as the last series by Michele had wrapped up and I loved it immensely. So far, it has a lot of promise. Small faeries being the magical equivalent of mice and bugs is an interesting premise, and a catch and release exterminator service a very novel business for a protagonist. I don't remember having read a book before where the protagonist was a pest exterminator, of the regular or magical kind.
I liked the plot and the characters and the magical premise and the setup we were left for an upcoming book plot. I hope we see more of the crew and I'm very interested on the romance with Winter progressing

“Win’s gonna have to hold both our hands while we’re down here.” Then they added in a fake dreamy voice, “We can pretend to be a throuple.”

4⭐️

I got the ARC of the audiobook for this, so I guess I’m going to talk about the narration a little bit in this review. Overall, I thought this was a pretty enjoyable paranormal urban fantasy book. I enjoy a bit of fantasy mixed into real-world elements—like our main character Miles being basically the bug man for little fairies around town. Well, maybe animal control is a better description.

Either way, this one’s kind of a little found-family, mystery, paranormal romance book with low spice and a lot of fluff. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a fluffy, cute story as much as the next person, but for some reason, I just can’t call this a 5-star read. I think my issue was the lingo they used. I don’t know if it was the narrator or just the writing, but neither character sounded right saying “hella” or other modern slang—it just felt kind of cringey.

That said, that was really my only complaint. The rest of it was pretty cute. I don’t personally see this as a slow burn since it’s a series and they end with a HFN, but the two-way crush turning into a real romance was adorable and made me feel a little gooey inside, which is always fun.

It was a nice change of pace for my spooky-month reading list—a little more goofy and lighthearted, which I needed. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book to see how things go with Winter and Miles and their little family of Lyric and the teenage boys they find along the way while dealing with gnomes in this one.

A new favorite for sure!!!

I had SUCH A GOOD TIME with this book! *screams*
Seriously I laughed and swooned and wanted to blush and kick my feet. This story is silly and goofy in the best way possible!!

The found family aspect was PERFECT! I love them all so much and I'm excited for the next book.

The pining and crushing hard on the other person was soooo sweet, truly lovely. I love a good pining, one that doesn't feel like the person is suffering.

Miles and Winter were both great! Their chemistry is amazing. Miles was such a sweet dude with a huge heart, the same goes for Winter. He was goofy and protective, ugh my kind of guy! I love that he was in jail. I know that sounds awful, it's just so rare but real. He learned from his mistakes and the author shows, the injustices he still has to face.

Shoutout to Lyric, they were great and I kinda want them to be my bff too.

I loved this story so much, that I don't even know what I should read next that could compare. *sigh*

The cover looked fun, sounded fun and mostly was fun with a bit of a cliffhanger. A guy terrified of gnomes and an ex-con crush go exterminating together. Add in Chaos and his brother and it was sweet found family that felt fated. The gnomes got a bit old but the connections kept things going. Secrets all round and a plot twist that might be a deal breaker. Looking forward to the next one.

This was an adorable book! I love the glimpse into the different types of faeries and magic types. I completely empathize with Miles as I also think gnomes are creepy. I can't wait to read the sequel and continue the series.

Funny story: The original reason I read this book is because I teach kids and we were making a lot of gnome projects in the summer. The kids and I started talking about gnomes and they all thought I was crazy for thinking gnomes are creepy. After a week of going back and forth about whether gnomes were creepy or cute, I saw this book recommended. I just had to read it and I'm so glad I did. Such a cute read.

Too many things popped up only after they were convenient. Like Winter supposedly being a magic suppressor after Miles was overwhelmed with his magic, or the firebird possibly being Miles' familiar when the concept hadn't even been introduced at all. There should've been chapters or scenes hinting at these possibilities lile maybe Miles noticed that magic around Winter was always weird or we should've seen other characters interact with their familiars to get that piece of world building knowledge. Having them just show up when they were necessary without proper set up made them feel contrived. It happened again with Lyric's power suddenly being revealed and being relevant the second it was. And again with Miles apparently having the ability to generate shields which, if that was always the case, why didn't Chaos teach him to do it before they went into the cellar? The whole "he can only hold it for ten minutes" excuse still didn't justify not telling Miles about it beforehand.

There were so many plot holes (or at least poor world building). The existence of nulls being a secret (and yet also not being one since there was a term for it) was a big one. Winter goes on this big explanation that people who could nullify magic would be used for nefarious purposes, but somehow they currently weren't? If nulls were a known thing (someone had to have told Winter what he was) then why weren't there more entities looking for them a la Lyric's magic sensing abilities? I can't believe that the government or some shady organization wouldn't be involved in looking for such powerful people. I get that wasn't the story the author wanted to tell here, but that doesn't excuse the poor attempt at handwaving the problem away. And in the cellar after Miles had created the shield, Winter explicitly needed to not touch him for his magic to work and yet Miles didn't succumb to the anger of the curse, but Lyric and Aeson did. Why was he suddenly immune? His shield clearly wasn't repelling the effect because the others still needed to be nullified. Was it because casting the shield and maintaining it somehow made him immune? If so, then that's just yet another too convenient plot element.

Also, there were faerie control agencies but none about dark magic? Why the hell did Miles, Winter and Lyric decide to investigate the cellar themselves instead of some other magical agency meant to deal with that shit? Was there no protocol around what to do when dark magic was involved?

How did the group manage to make it to the seal without Winter nulling out the anger when Miles and Lyric alone were about to get into a fist fight earlier? I can't imagine super angry people being willing to follow in a line while fighting off gnomes then setting up fence posts. If the curse strong enough to make people want to hit each other, then why didn't it when Morty and his brother came along with them? And when they were finally dealing with the curse and everyone started fighting each other, where the hell were the gnomes then? How were they not overwhelmed as they dropped their fence posts? Why were the gnomes seemingly waiting until Winter got everyone under control before attacking?

Character-wise, Winter's history as a felon was novel though underused. There was a lot of potential there with regards to fear of being sent back, fear of trusting others because of how he got there in the first place, anger towards society for labeling him as just a convict, but none of that ever really surfaced. He recalls his suffering and hates the time he lost, but is otheriwse generally fine. You'd think spending 18 months locked away and having that follow him through his record would've had a bigger impact on him personality-wise.

What the heck were those dangling plot threads about Miles' old job? I get they were set up for some "mysterious" past that'll probably be addressed in a future story, but dropping the same one liners every few chapters without any real hint or development was not the way to do it (nor should it have been done so early if it was going to be a sequel thing). Randomly dropping the "I used to foster someone. They died" then suddenly finding out that Miles used to be a detective came so far out of left field.

There was nothing to write home about the romance. It was pretty standard fluffy, no conflict stuff there.

TL;DR: I had lots of problems with how things were written. Too many contrived conveniences and plot holes.

Nice...very nice start to the series...This was a quirky, fun and entertaining read with a sweet slow burn romance thrown in. I went into this without really reading the blurb (duh it's Michele Notaro!). I knew Gnomes were involved and I was intrigued and excited. So the ending was kind of a bummer with the minor cliff hanger but I really did enjoy this paranormal world where different magics exist along with the faerie critters. Miles and Winter dual crushes were cute...the subplot to conquer the evil curse was a page turner and I guess I'm still intrigued enough to go along with Miles and Winter on their romance journey. It will be interesting to see more secrets come to light in the next installment.

Fun Paranormal Adventure Romance

This was such a fun read!

The romance is slow burn but so so sweet. And the paranormal adventure was an absolute romp, with curses, gnomes, and a teen Necromancer

I loved all the bits of the back stories we got a glimpse at and can't wait to see what happens next.

In this, you'll find:
●MM Paranormal Adventure Romance
●HfN ending
●Magical pest control
●High school crushes
●Mention of teen homelessness
●Discussion of teens going hungry
●Mention of past kicking out by parents
●Mention of past incarceration
●Rejection by family
●Job struggles with a criminal

Review for (Carry A Faerie-1) Did it Have to Be Gnomes by Michele Notaro Audiobook

This story is the first book in Miles & Winter's story. I love that this is a paranormal romance, my type. It was a fantastic story narrated by Zachary Zaba. I felt his voice did this story justice. When I read the title of this book, I laughed, then said, "Why not? Let's see what it's all about. I got sucked in really fast, thanks to Zachary Zabra's voice acting, which was perfect. I haven't read Michele Notaro but I know I will be looking for more of their work. I want more, that's for sure. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

Loved this book. Read most of it with a smile on my face.
Miles has a paranormal extermination service where he resituates those creatures rather than killing them.
He take a job with a gnome infestation but it turns out something is affecting the gnomes' behavior.
Miles has to take on additional help in the shape of Winter who is Miles' love interest.
There is also a selection of secondary characters who are fun.
I am looking forward to more in this series.

This was a sweet and easy read.

Miles takes out pest of the supernatural variant, and he's the only one close by willing to capture the fae creatures alive and bring them to a sanctuary, instead of killing them. When he gets a job that's a bit too much to handle on his own, he asks Winter for help. Will they be able to work together, considering Miles has had a crush on Winter since high school? Throw in more gnomes than you ever want to see, behaving way out of character, and Miles and Winter are in over their head.

I would say it's a bit of a slow burn between Miles and Winter, but that's more to do with them taking the time to get to know each other properly. We already get some pretty sweet moments, and Winter wants to protect Miles against everything, while Miles needs to learn he can trust Winter.

Like almost all of Michele's book, found family is one of the main themes. There are some pretty awesome side characters which I'm hoping we will see more of in the next book. Rescued animals and bonded familiars that steal the show, rare magic, and more. There are also still plenty of secrets still left to be uncovered and although the story doesn't end on a cliffhanger, it's clear there will be more books to follow.

If you're looking for a lighter read, within a new world, sweet characters and magic, I would say this is the book for you!

Did It Have To Be Gnomes?! is the first book in Michele Notaro’s Carry A Faerie series, and it’s a fun and charming paranormal romance with a little bit of magical chaos.
Set in a new universe, the story follows Miles who is a rare empath who can feel emotions (and even thoughts). That makes relationships tricky for Miles, so he’s spent most of his life pretty isolated and touch-starved. He now runs a magical pest control business that’s known for being humane, catching and releasing faeries rather than harming them.

The real trouble begins when Miles gets called to handle a massive gnome infestation at a huge mansion. Gnomes already freak him out, but this situation is worse than anything he’s dealt with before. Enter Winter, Miles’s high school crush who just so happens to work for a rival pest control company. Winter is a null (also rare), which means he cancels out other people’s magics, and that includes Miles’s empath abilities. He’s also kind-hearted and quietly harbouring a crush of his own. When Miles asks for help, Winter jumps at the chance, and the two team up to figure out what’s going on with the gnomes.

There’s a sweet slow burn between them that develops naturally as they spend more time together, which really suited them. You can feel they’ve both been into each other for a while, and their awkward, but also endearing, chemistry makes their growing relationship feel genuine. The forced proximity trope really works here for me, especially since Winter is the only person Miles can be around without being overwhelmed.

Outside the romance, there is a group of really great supporting characters. We have Lyric, Winter’s best friend, who brings a lot of personality and humour. And then there are the teenage twins Chaos and Ace who are both intriguing and completely lovable. Add to that a one-eyed cat, a giant dog, and a magical firebird familiar, and the story builds a found family vibe that I hope we see in future books.

The plot is paranormal, but it mixes in a light mystery with moments of danger. There’s more going on with the gnomes than meets the eye, and the hints about both Miles and Winter’s pasts are setting up some exciting possibilities that will hopefully be explored throughout the series. I have to say, there were times were the magic felt a little inconsistent. It didn’t take away too much from the fun of the story, but it was noticeable...at least for me.

I did have a bit of an issue at times, because the characters felt (behaved) younger than their actual ages, which does tend to happen in Michele’s books. Also, I usually find the nicknames in Michele’s books a bit too much, but here they were much more subtle and kinda cute, unlike in, for example, Nikolai, where they didn’t quite work for me. Hopefully it stays that way going forward.
But overall, the book is sweet and charming, and I really loved the unique idea of magical beings treated like magical vermin.

All in all, Did It Have To Be Gnomes?! is delightful, and it’s an easy read with a lovable cast, unique premise, and a romance that feels natural.

I received a copy of this book from the author, and this is my unbiased review.

audio fun! Zachary Zaba is so dang brillant! loved him for this book! He made these already brillant characters even more brilliant. Such a fun listen!!

Team Miles all the way! Gnomes are creepy little thieves. No one can prove me otherwise.

absolutely adored this beautiful wild ride of a book you have an empath, Miles, who has been against the other extermination where his opd high school crush is employed. When Miles gets a job that is way too much for one man, he employs Winter. What should be a two man job becomes so much more affordable that we get to meet the rest of this beautifully dysfunctional group.

each of these members has their fair share of secrets that in time will come to head, crossing fingers that other people can handle their truths. A welll done start to an exciting new world that I look forward to devouring. and please, Miles, adopt these quirky twins to show they can be loved and supported.

Nonbinary side character
Ridiculous nicknames
Found family vibes
Sneaky, sneaky gnome
A little mystery surrounding our two MCs pasts and a so called Sanctuary.

In this universe, creatures like gnomes, pixies, and other mythical creatures are referred to as Faeries and can be seen as pest. Miles and Winter work as “exterminators” helping to remove said pests from people’s homes. Miles is of the belief that faeries can be removed without 💀-ing them. His business operates by removing the creatures and taking them to sanctuaries. Winter initially works for a rival company that has no problem 💀-ing the faeries, though he doesn’t like that. Myles asks for Winter’s help on a big job and that is where our story really begins.

This story centers around Miles and Winter working together to rid a mansion of an outrageous gnome invasion. Along the way they get some help from a friend, some teenagers and a couple familiars. The magic in the universe felt really unique, and I can’t wait to see what happens as Miles, and we the readers, learn more about it.

I will say two things stood out the most. Our two MCs (and presumably Lyric) are in their early thirties, but read more like early twenties. Also, the romance was probably my least favorite part of the story. It was very much an instalove situation. The MCs hardly learn anything about each other, which felt like a missed opportunity to really develop and build an amazing relationship between two deserving characters. Honestly though, all the “relationships” that were developed in this book felt very instant. Lyric and Miles’s budding friendship. The adults towards Chaos and Aesen. THAT SAID… this is an ongoing series. My hope is that maybe the author is presenting these relationships in the way we tend to experience real relationships (ie: this book is the honeymoon phase where everything is new and exciting and perfect, and future books will be where they really get to learn each other before deepening and solidifying the their bond). If that’s the case I’ll come back to update my rating.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! And I look forward to the rest of the series.

This was a delightful romp with exterminator Miles and his crush and competitor Winter, as they battle an infestation of gnomes. Miles has gotten the job of removing a large number of gnomes who have moved into a mansion that was empty for a time. The new owner called him because he removes magical creatures, but instead of killing them like most pest exterminators, he takes them to a gnome sanctuary. Realizing the size of the job, Miles calls on an old high school classmate working for a competing company to help him (the fact he is attracted to Winter and had a crush on him years ago is irrelevant — right!). Miles is empathetic and can read thoughts and emotions of others, always hearing things in the back of his mind even when home alone and relaxed. It turns out Winter is a null, meaning he can nullify the emotions of others. This is especially welcome to Miles, because when Winter touches him, he has such a sense of peace and silence from the emotions of others, it is something he has never had before. Winter’s magic comes in handy when the mansion job becomes overwhelming with the largest infestation of gnomes he has ever seen, and magic that makes gnomes and humans angry and violent. Along with Winter, his friend Lyric, and the necromancer Chaos and his brother Aeson, plus Miles’s firebird familiar, the group has its hands full breaking a curse and defeating an army of angry gnomes.
There’s lots of action between this found family group and the angry gnomes, magic of one kind or another being used by each character in some way, growing feelings between Winter and Miles as they follow up on the attraction from years ago, a successful job completed, and hints of things from Miles’s past that will undoubtedly play into future books. It’s a mystery, an action adventure, and a developing love story all wrapped up in magic and friendship which held my attention as it unfolded. I want to know more about Miles’s past, and also that of Chaos and Aeson, as I have a feeling their story will be unusual too. I look forward to book 2, and would recommend this quirky book for a light-heated, smile producing, read.
I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review.
