Echoes of Death by Marlene Mitchell and Gary Yeagle

Grant Denlinger is back in this mystery set in the Great Smokey Mountains. Grant is a young man pondering his future in law enforcement while faced with the antagonism of his red necked Chief. Grant is thrust into a series of grisly murders that are totally out of character for his small town. In the previous book, Grant faced a major ethical decision. This book picks up where the last book left off.

I would recommend reading these books in order. I think they will make more sense. Once again the community has mixed emotions about the victims of the latest murders. None of the victims generate any empathy.

The authors do not tar the villain with a broad brush. They show the motivation and the provocation of the villain’s behavior. Instead of loathing the bad guy, you tend to feel sorry for them while knowing that justice needs to prevail.

Chief Blue is also back and together with Grant they tackle the knotty ethical problem that has plaqued Grant throughout the first book and this book as well.

Finally there does seem to be the potential for a follow up on this story. There is a revelation at the very end that clearly sets up a sequel.

I am really enjoying this series of books.
I like the writing style. The authors give details that allow me to actually be right there with the characters.
This book, book #2, is a tad bit long-winded. Not so long-winded that I lost interest.
The authors have created characters with diverse personalities. Some I like, some I hate and two I am struggling with my final opinions.
I just wonder about living with the decisions made. Right and wrong are not situaltional.
No spoiler alerts from me.

The story continues and Grant is right in the middle of it. Is the mystery really solved or is the killer still out there. There is more to come. Will now start to 3rd of this Smokey Mountains Murders saga.

Great 2nd book in the series

The Smokey Mountain Murders series definitely needs to be read in order so start at book 1 but each book is a complete story. This series is like a mixture of a cozy mystery and a dark thriller. The story is mostly told from the point of view of Grant, a Townsend deputy, that finds himself in the middle of soving murders that have happened over the last year. Lots of clues throughout but many unexpected twist that make the book unpredictable. Several times I thought I knew what was happening only for something unexpected occur that changes the story. The only negative was that there are no strong women characters. All the women are written as the good little wife character that just can't handle difficult situations. It's almost like this series was written years ago then updated by adding cell phones and modern technology.

The book is the second in the series of three. The author has done a great job in all three books in picking up exactly where the previous one left off. I loved the fact that the hero has difficult decisions to make and the twist that surprised me as it was unpredictable.

I highly recommend reading all three of these.Shadows of Deathand Seasons of Death

Still believe it's a great series!

My only concern was the amount of time and pages involved in refreshing some new readers about the first book. Very tedious. But glad I stuck with it and binged till the last page. Interesting storyline and colorful characters. Saving my big opinion for this series when I finish #3. Everyone should enjoy The Smoky Mountain Murders!!!!
