If there were a hierarchy for desperation and regrettable decisions, Winnie Rowan would sit comfortably at the top. Sandwiched between drunk-texting your ex and making eye contact with the mall kiosk salesman, to be exact.
First, she hired her ex best friend Connor—the guy who broke her heart and humiliated her in front of their entire senior class—to be her temporary assistant. Then, Winnie finds herself scrambling to hire a fake boyfriend to fulfill her grandmother’s dying wish.
Unfortunately, the best candidate for her charade is none other than Connor Wolf. With the history between them, he’s the only one who could possibly fool her grandmother.
As the list of regrets grows longer, Winnie is determined not to add to it by falling for Connor again. Even if he continues the ruse when no one is around, or looks at her like she hung the moon.
He may be charming, irritatingly handsome, and eager to please her, but her heart knows better than anyone else that he’s another thing, too.
Dangerous.
Little Red Riding Hood meets The Proposal in this dual POV, closed door novella that will bring all the feels without any of the spice. It is an installment in the Fairytale Kind of Love series of interconnected standalone romantic comedies and has been extended from its initial publication in the What Happened in the Woods anthology from Moondust Productions.
Having this as my first ever ARC, I am so glad I enjoyed this book! 4.5 stars.
Red and Connor were such great characters; I loved the double point-of-view. I wanted to just keep reading because it was my favorite trope (fake dating) and I was eager to see how it turned out. I devoured it.
Red was loveable and funny! I remember laughing out loud at some parts, which is hard to get me to do when I'm reading. Connor was the perfect golden retriever main male character, and I could feel his charm through the pages while I was reading.
This was a short novel, making the pace feel normal and not rushed. I do wish I could have learned more about Red's job, I feel like I only really got a look into what she does towards the end of the book but maybe I just didn't catch it in the beginning.
I love that the epilogue wrapped everything into a little bow. Normally I don't like epilogues with a time jump but since it's a shorter book, it definitely made sense to have. I also enjoyed the other time jumps throughout the book, I thought it was easy to follow and gave a good background as the story went on.
Besides the names of the two characters, the short scene towards the end and the grandma, I found it hard to draw a connection to the original little red riding hood story. But I still enjoyed it anyway.
I felt it was pretty realistic too, but I think I'm still slightly mad at Connor for Red. I'm not sure I would have forgiven him, but I understand their history.
This is a rom-com book with little to no spice, for those who prefer that!
I've been along for the ride since the early stages of this story. Back when it was created for the anthology. This story is so funny, creative, and just all around a fantastic read! I loved the new bonus scenes! It's like icing on a cake! Can't wait for this series of fairytale romcoms! With talent like Brianne's, you know they're going to be good!!
What a fun story!! I absolutely ate this up. The writing was hilarious and easy to follow, the characters felt real, and the plot was so compelling. I loved learning about Red and Connor's childhood friendship slowly over the course of several flashback chapters, and their romance was so sweet and wholesome! I could have easily read another 100 pages about these characters, but the story fit comfortably within its limited word count without feeling rushed or stilted.
I might have to change my opinion on both fairytale retellings and contemporary rom-coms because I've never been a huge fan of either, but this one was just so delightful. 😍 Here's what you can expect to find...
🎀 Fake Dating 🎀 Second Chance romance 🎀 Best friends to enemies to lovers 🎀 Modern fairytale retelling 🎀 FMC with Gluten allergy 🎀 Tiny demon dog (Chihuahua)
💋 This is a no-spice romance with lots of longing, a little angst, and a few very sweet, slightly steamy kisses.
The Redo by Brianne Ritchie Cordova was an absolute delight! From the very first chapter, I was hooked by the sparkling humour and the crackling chemistry between Red and Connor. Their banter kept me smiling, and the way the backstory was woven in made me eager to see how they would overcome the obstacles standing between them.
There were so many standout moments (the Chihuahua bath scene was hilarious!), and I especially enjoyed the clever nods to the Red Riding Hood theme—it gave the romance a playful twist that made it extra memorable.
If you enjoy witty romcoms with heart, humour, and swoony romance, this one is a must-read!
Positives: From the first page of this book, I was hooked. This book has such a unique and refreshing sense of humor that will absolutely knock your socks off! I can’t even find the words to describe how truly incredible it is. Jeeves (the chihuahua) was such a character! I loved him so much. And Grandma Ro is phenomenal, I need her to be real in real life. She is so funny and wise and just amazing! I LOVE the banter between Red and Conner! It was so good. And he remembers how she likes her coffee even though they haven’t met in years! (So sweet) I was also surprised to realize that you can actually have bad side effects from eating gluten, that just never registered in my mind for some reason. (Not that it was a positive time for the character, but this sentiment doesn’t belong in the negatives at all.) I seriously loved reading this book! And now I need to devour all of Brienne’s other books!!!!!
Negatives: Some of the kissing got uncomfortably heated for my taste. And I’m not sure how I feel about the cross dressing, even though it was slightly funny and only one scene.
Content: Romance: Yes. Heated Kisses. Cussing: None Gore: None Violence: Jeeves. IYKYK. Nothing graphic or disturbing in the least.
This is one of the best books I've read this year, but I would posit that it isn't a retelling. It nods towards Little Red Riding Hood a few times, but thematically the book has very little in common with the folktale.
It's a La Croix of retellings: the girl is named Red (there is logic to it, though! her full name is Winnifred, and she also goes by Winnie), the boy is surnamed Wolf, visiting the girl's grandmother is the motivation for them to fake date, and there is a scene where he has to dress up in the grandmother's clothes as a disguise. (I suppose you could also argue that the grandmother's vicious chihuahua stands in for the wolf in the original story, and Connor is in fact the woodsman, not the wolf, since he does help Winnie wrangle the dog. But I still feel like those are a few superficial resemblances rather than a plot-relevant story retelling.) In its own right, however, this is an engaging, truly adorable rom-com, and I think it stands far better on its own feet than it does as a reference to the folktale.
The enemies-to-lovers plot made actual sense here, since they had been best friends until he had deeply hurt her, and she had good reason to resent him and distrust him. But it's not just a random miscommunication, either: he knows what he did, and he wants to make things right. There's communication and character growth for both of them, and the emotional arc of the story is very satisfying. There's banter and comedy, too, and I laughed out loud several times.
I also enjoyed the representation of Celiac disease. As someone with food sensitivities myself, I know all too well how careful one must be about food and cross-contamination, as well as what a hell eating the wrong thing can unleash. The lifestyle decisions and post-exposure consequences are well portrayed here, and they feel fully integrated into the story, serving to further the plot and flesh out the characters' dynamics and history in addition to giving us a cozy "sick day episode." (Plus, the outcome of the sick day is adorbs.)
I highly recommend the book if you're in the mood for a short but sweet and satisfying rom-com with all the development of a book twice its size. I've already got my hands on the other two rom-coms by this author, and I'm looking forward to reading them in the coming months.
I loved this! It was everything I hoped for after reading the synopsis. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. Super cute and the perfect length.
If you like Friends to Enemies to More, this is perfect. Connor and Red (Winnifred) were childhood friends until he completely humiliated her, broke her heart, and ruined their friendship. When an opening comes up at her company and she has to hire the one applicant she never expected… well, what better way to get a little revenge than becoming his boss?
That was the plan, but it’s hard to keep that energy when he’s still so attractive, so sweet, so flirty… and then he apologizes?! As if that’s not confusing enough, she wants to bring a date home to make her sick Grandma happy, but can’t find anyone last minute. So who better to be her stand in date than Connor? He knows her best, and they’ve worked through the past… mostly. But she’s not ready to get her heart broken again, so she tries to stay cautious as the two of them reconnect. But this time feels different. The gazes linger a little longer, and Connor seems to be flirting… unless he’s just playing his part really well. Or is he?
Connor falling for Red...oh my goodness, so sweet. It’s almost like you get to experience it happening in real time. And I loved the flashbacks to when they were in school and when they were younger, getting to see everything they’ve already been through together. Their friendship is adorable, and that first kiss? Wow.
Gosh, I loved it. So cute. The Red/Wolf/Grandma vibes were adorable, and Jeeves kept things interesting!
I gave this 4.5 rounded to 5 stars!
Quotes: “I looked for her in everyone else because I was too afraid of losing her to see what we could be together,”
“If you have to pretend to be less than what you are in order to keep him, he’s not the one.”
The Re-Do is a sweet, heartfelt friends-to-lovers romance with a clever Red Riding Hood nod woven through the story. Red (Winnie Rowan) and Connor Wolf were best friends from kindergarten through high school until graduation night when Connor’s hurtful and careless words broke Red’s heart. Nine years later, fate throws them back together when Connor walks into her office to interview as her temporary assistant.
Connor and Red have incredible chemistry. Their playful teasing and witty banter pull you in and keep you grinning. I loved the dual POV and how memories from the past are woven throughout the story. My heart aches for the way Connor hurt Red on graduation night. The betrayal and humiliation are easy to imagine. I was initially disappointed by how much time passed before he tried to make things right, but it worked well for the plot. If I had my way, everyone would make up immediately and not waste time apart but that doesn’t make for interesting fiction. Haha
The fake-dating situation pushes them to address their history head-on. The maturity, vulnerability, and emotional depth they bring to those conversations really highlight how much they’ve grown. When given a second chance, Connor is incredibly sweet, thoughtful, and totally invested. He let Red go once and he doesn’t plan to make the same mistake again.
If you’re drawn to swoony chemistry, second chances, emotional growth, and that irresistible friends-to-more spark, don’t miss adding this to your TBR.
✨Tropes: Friends to enemies to friends to more, fake dating, workplace romance, reverse boss assistant, second chance, food allergy rep
Favorites: 💙Connor’s protectiveness 💙The apology 💙Caffeine-ease 💙Honest adult conversations 💙He takes care of her 💙Red talking to Connor’s mom 💙Conner’s flirting 💙Their first kiss 💙Rome-Muumuu 💙Connie the European cousin 💙”Always have been. Always will be.”
Thank you Brianne Ritchie Cordova for the ARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A new book from Brianne always makes me smile, expecting a well-written, cosy clean romance with interesting characters and smart dialogue.
This book doesn’t disappoint.
Labelled as a Red Riding Hood reimagining, it tells the story of Winnie (nicknamed Red) and Connor Wolf, childhood besties who fell out when Connor hid his feelings for her and embarrassed her in front of their high school classmates.
Ten years later he is in desperate need for a job to avoid becoming homeless and applies for a job as a PA for a smart businesswoman. Aka as Winnie.
He gets hired, as Winnie would love to humiliate him back. When family circumstances require her to hire a date, he offers himself. They both know Winnie hasn’t got a lot of options, so he bags himself the gig as fake boyfriend too.
But for him, it’s not fake. This is a re-do and this time he won’t blow his chance to show her his true feelings.
It was a really nice read. Great chemistry, nice family dynamics and although slightly predictable, it had enough to keep me engaged and wanting to find out how it would end. I also loved the gender reversal, with Winnie being the boss and Connor being the PA.
I did struggle to find the red riding hood retelling. Yes, Winnie is nicknamed red due to the raincoat she wore as a child, and Connor’s last name is Wolf, and there is a grandma, but that’s where the references end.
Had Connor been the hunter, and had there been another (baddie) love interest worming his way in to Winnie and grandma’s life, it would have been more in line with the fairytale. But still a good read.
I'm obsessed. I need whatever this magical potion that is Brianne Ritchie Córdova's writing in an IV drip, please. Or in a coffee cup. Double pump. No. Make it a triple. I'll be bouncing off the walls from the high of this book for at least three days.
*ahem* I loved everything about this rom-com. The chapter titles made me giggle. The humor was so delightfully unhinged and perfectly timed. And the romance ... AGGGGHHHH!!! Chef's kiss. This best friends-to enemies-to fake dating trope was SO. WELL. DONE. And it brought in one of my favorite things I like to see in a romance: the involvement of family. Listen, I enjoy a couple gazing into each other's eyes as much as the next girl, but I also LOVE it when there are other people involved, particularly family, or even found family. It gives a healthy reprieve to the gazing and provides a sort of checks and balances.
I read this in two sittings. I would have read the whole thing in one night, but there's this pesky thing called sleep that was nagging at me, so I had to pause in my reading and pick it back up today. I haven't binged a book in a while, but this one had me glued to the screen of my kindle. Thankfully I am unglued now. Walking around with a kindle attached to my face would get awkward. All that to say, I HIGHLY recommend this story for all who love a good love story!
Internal thoughts while reading ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Loving the internal thoughts of Winnie aka “Red” 😂 “Bane of my existence” is killing me😂😂😂 Conner you really are the worst! I’m liking you more Conner😊 ‘Connie’ shall forever be remembered😂😂 Such a sweet rehearsal, officially swooning full time! Love a good HEA😍
🐺Little Red Riding Hood Romcom Retelling 💋Enemies to Lovers 🐺He Takes Care Of Her 💋Workplace Romance 🐺Second Chances
🌶️: Kisses Only 🤬: None
Quotes: Whatever drug kissing her was, I would chase the high again and again. I’d never develop a tolerance for it. Ever! I never understood the phrase knock your socks off until I kissed him. “— I feel completely, irreversibly in love with you, Red.” “Trust me, there are some things I want to take my sweet time with, but this won’t be one of them. When I know what I want, I’m relentless. And what I want, Red, is you. Forever.” “Marriage is work, but it’s the type of work artists put into their paintings.”
Content Warnings: mentions of divorce, domestic conflict, childhood neglect, bullying, death, terminal illness, and cancer; depictions of: emotional manipulation and gluten sensitivity
I stumbled onto The Re-Do on Bookstagram, and when I saw it had fake dating and best friends-to-more—I had to sign up for the ARC team. I was excited when I got accepted, and I ended up finishing the book in just three days because I couldn’t put it down!
This Red Riding Hood–inspired rom-com alternates between past and present, giving readers a glimpse into how Winnie and Connor’s friendship evolved over the years. After teenage hurts and misunderstandings, life gives them another chance to reconnect, and with a little help from family, romance follows naturally.
Clean, wholesome, and laugh-out-loud funny (especially with Grandma Rowan’s rules 🤣). It’s got heart, humor, and just the right amount of romance. I loved it and highly recommend!
I received an ARC from the author, but all opinions are my own.
The Re-Do was such a cute and heartfelt read! I loved the mix of humor, vulnerability, and second chances woven through Connor and Winnie’s story. Watching them go from awkward coworkers to fake dating for the sake of her grandmother’s wish—and then slowly rediscovering what they once had—was such a joy. The banter was sharp, the late-night moments were swoony, and the emotional honesty gave it real depth. Connor’s growth and Winnie’s guarded but hopeful heart made me root for them every step of the way. This book left me smiling, laughing, and a little misty-eyed by the end—a perfectly cozy, feel-good romance about forgiveness, timing, and the kind of love worth redoing.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A short, sweet fairy-tale retelling by an author who is fast becoming one of my favourites. Red, an independent business owner, hires Connor Wolf, her childhood best friend who she hasn’t spoken to in over 9 years. Things ended badly between them, but they need to get past that to work together effectively.
I was lucky enough to be on the ARC team for this book and I highly recommend it. A well-written closed-door romance.
Such a lovely take on the Classic Little Red Riding Hood. The creativity of the story through present and past flashbacks, sharing the story of these characters and how much they have grown through the years. Such a special story of forgiveness and rebuilding old friendships that developed into something new.
This was a cute and sweet short romance. It had second-chance elements and good banter. I was wanting more from the characters though. The overall character development felt a little flat, even with the shorter length. Overall a very cute book that hits the spot for a quick read closed-door sweet romance!
I first read this when it was released in an anthology and loved it then. After a second read through, I can say with confidence this is my comfort read. All the feels, warm and relatable characters, lots of humor, and sweet, clean heat galore. Brianne is one of my favorite authors and I look forward to everything she's written. 100/10
I love Brianne's writing style, and always enjoy the romance in her books. I'm not generally a big fan of second chance or friends to lovers, but Brianne made it work!! The only reason I couldn't give this book 5⭐, is because it was way too short 🤣😅
4.5 🌟 my second time reading this and its just so sweet! Its exactly what you want for a quick romcom, hilarious one liners that Brianne is so good at and the sweet moments between the characters are perfect. Thank you so much To the author for my ARC copy ♡ clean, no swearing or spice.
To anybody who is tired of morally grey conflict and looking for a green flag, cinnamon roll book boyfriend, I present to you: Connor Wolf.
There were so many times in this book that I was squealing!!! (Or wanting to squeal, but couldn’t wake the house.)
The flirting! The banter! The HILARIOUS sense of humour! (From the very first chapter title, I knew I was going to laugh out loud in this book—and I did, I definitely did.)
If you’re ready to curl up with a cute, fluffy romance that’ll make you laugh and swoon and possibly cry, then I definitely suggest this book!
I love a book that makes me laugh out loud, and this one did that more than once! There were so many hilarious moments between these former best friends (and then reluctant boss/assistant). I also found Jeeves, the grumpy chihuahua, and the meddling grandmother to be fun characters as well. Winnie (or Red as Connor calls her) is such a spunky gal- I enjoyed her POV just for her inner dialogue alone. And Connor’s yearning for Winnie was pretty dang swoon-worthy. I liked how both MCs had their own growth and healing arcs. This is a shorter read, but I felt like everything was tied up nicely. Highly recommend for the laughs and the sweet moments equally.
LOVED this one! It is super fun and cute! I love the characters and the storyline! I felt that the link to Red Riding Hood wasn't super strong, but enjoyed the story so much that it wasn't a drawback for me.
Hilarious retelling of little red riding hood. Between the crazy chihuahua, flirty banter, and slightly eccentric grandma there is plenty to have you grinning that’s also balanced really well with sweet moments.
I loved this book! It was a new author I was excited to read it from an indie sale. It was so fun! I loved the ‘red riding hood’ aspect, but it wasn’t tacky at all! I’m excited to read more from Brianne.
I absolutely loved this book! I laughed out loud and stayed up late reading cause I never wanted to put it down. It was so enjoyable getting to read it. I highly recommend this book if you want a feel good book that leaves you feeling happier than before you started reading.
