Soon to be a feature film on streaming!

Readers who love slow-burn, angsty new adult romance by Anna Todd and Jamie McGuire and steamy, push-pull romances like Euphoria, Outer Banks and Chemical Hearts.

After her mother, an artist who can't stay in one place for too long, moves again, June White finds herself in Laguna Beach, California, where she is forced to face yet another new beginning.

For June, who prefers to hole up in her room at parties and watch true crime documentaries on Netflix, making friends is not easy. Especially in her senior year of high school. And yet, unexpectedly, her classmates seem to take an immediate liking to her—that is, everyone except James Hunter.

Handsome, but with a notorious reputation, the dark-haired James has a dark and tormented past that only fuels his legend. He's reckless, rude, lives on the edge, and embodies the very things June should stay away from. However, something about him pulls her towards him . . .

Read bc of the movie anddddd yeah as you can tell 2 stars. I really wish I could erase what I just read so I could be blissfully ignorant. Bc I enjoyed the movie, it was so good in a bad way. But the book just made me sad. For context, I was going into this book expecting to be reading something SORT of similar to the movie, but soon realized that was not the case.

I don’t know if the translation was off or if they just copy and pasted what this author wrote on wattpad directly into a book with absolutely NO editing. But the writing was very messy. Dialogue was very poor. Couldn’t tell who was talking or what was happening in a scene. No plots points at all. 2/3 of the book was confusing and unnecessary. So many characters were introduced but added nothing to the story. So many side characters had POV chapters which added nothing and just filled space.

June was insufferable at points (very pick-me, I wear t-shirts and sneakers, I have curves and big thighs unlike these skinny model peers of mine, I’m not like other girls type vibes). ALSO it’s not weird to be named after a month, idk why that was a focus of her character.
*she thought it was groundbreaking that Will didn’t laugh at her name when she introduced herself?!?!? Like girl lock in*.
!TW! she also self-harms in one chapter then it was never brought up again?!?!??

I don’t understand her relationship with Will. There was no real basis for a relationship in the first place. They never spoke to each other or had chemistry, but were with each other the whole book?!?!? I’m not shiting you, their only dialogue was why they weren’t talking or seeing each other and if they were going to start talking and seeing each other.

Her and James were also weird and I didn’t understand what was happening with them the whole time. Their dialogue with each other was so aggressive for absolutely no reason and I was genuinely so confused as to why. The way they were acting towards each other was not justified in my opinion it was just strange, crazy, and toxic.

James is also insufferable. He was a druggy, ‘bad’ boy who slept with EVERYONE and I mean everyone (he is bi in the book). The way he was described was not likable or redeemable to me. Andddd this author really has to tell you EVERY TIME that this man has a vape and is hitting it. Which started to piss me off around the 5th time she mentioned it.

I really wanted to enjoy some part of this book but I couldn’t, I honestly forced myself to finish it. I wasss kinda interested in the Jax and Blaze plot line but even that got old by the second chapter of it. It also never got written about after the halfway mark lol.

I feel like the author was trying to test the waters with characters and plots to see how people reacted on wattpad. Because of this, the book is so messy and all over the place - making me feel like reading it was a chore. All this book needed was good editors and rewriting staff to make a solid group of characters and dialogue ,better chemistry between said characters , and actual plot points. So basically rewriting the whole book…

All in all this book was not good, and clearly is not meant for me. I will not continue reading but will continue watching the movies if another one comes out.

Bully Romance • Multi-POV • Mental Health Rep

Let me start by saying this book was a huge let down. *****If you’re reading this because you watched the movie, it is NOTHING like the movie. AT ALL.*****

Examples:
James races cars, instead of focusing on fighting rings.
James is bisexual in this so there are some MM scenes.
June does not lose her brother to steroids, but to cancer.
James step dad doesn’t exist in this book.
June doesn’t babysit Jasper, she tutors him and he is nonverbal.
James is [always] hooked on sex, drugs, or alcohol. And I do mean always. I’m not exaggerating.
James is always hanging out in a strip club, and something about a gun that we STILL don’t know anything about even after reading this book.

Now, I normally love bully romances and enemies to lovers, but this book was so bad. I know it’s interpreted to English, so I’m not sure if it’s a language barrier of mistakes or what. But the wording of this book was awful to read. It would skip around so much that some parts didn’t make sense. A lot of words were misspelled but obviously I figured them out. Text messages in this book are read in italics. Overall though, the way this was written or maybe interpreted just didn’t make sense.

The other issue I had was the plot. The entire book is held on everyone having secrets, which is fine. However, at some point you have to start giving the reader clues to start figuring out where it’s headed. I was completely lost the first 70% in because most of the conversations made no sense since I didn’t know what they were even talking about due to their “secret”. It’s not even explained in their thought process.

Last notes, there’s MM included in this. I didn’t mind some other POVs but I also don’t care for the side characters much. I wanted to skip some of their chapters. Plus I once again had no idea what everyone was going on about when no one knows anything about each other’s secrets. 🤷‍♀️ I was getting annoyed by the vape thing. We don’t need to know how many times he turns it on and off or takes a hit. lastly, I was hoping for a big plot twist at the end or something. NOPE. I was bored. 🥱 I was disappointed ☹️ and I’m over it.

I wanted more James & June’s story but I don’t like this book enough to be continuing.

great story, difficult to read

I really want to love this book. I did have trouble putting it down because the story gripped me. The problem is it is very difficult to read. It is hard to follow. I don’t know if this is due to the translation or what. But it’s sometimes hard to figure out who is saying what and the transitions leave me confused as to what exactly is happening.

I read this because the movie was horribly entertaining. Honestly, I should have DNFed this. This book is terrible. It clearly needed further editing before it hit the Kindle as there are a tone of spelling and other errors. The characters are insufferable. Im glad the movie went away from the book a bit. Highly doubt I'll bother with the next book.

The storyline itself was fine, but the multiple points of view didn’t work for me. I tend to get confused when a book switches between too many POVs, so this one was more a personal reading challenge than an issue with the writing. Unfortunately, I ended up DNFing it.
