Surprisingly interesting if not precisely what I expected. I like the story and my only real problem with the book was that I find the MC's name strange. I'll be definitely picking up the rest of the series because it did a wonderful job of catching my attention.

Small town life…..it’s something Prentiss Pucket knows very well. With graduation upon her, Prentiss is planning to spend the rest of her life with Jackson. The plan is to take over Jackson’s parents farm. A plan that Prentiss has dreamed of for many years. Then the unexpected happens and changes her life in a drastic way.

What would you do if you woke up to discover you had been kidnapped? To make things worse, you are taken to a camp to work for your abductors. When Prentiss discovers that her brother and other people in town are also in the camp, she begins to worry about Jackson. Despite looking and worrying for Jackson, Prentiss has not found him anywhere. Did they capture him? Is he still at the farm? Where has everyone been taken? What does it all mean??

Captive is a new serial by Leigh Talbert Moore. It is completely unlike anything she has written. The subject matter pulls you into the pages. The circumstances of Prentiss’ abduction remain a mystery. Flashbacks reveal the life that Prentiss once led. Pulling you into her life and the future she know leads. What an interesting beginning to a serial unlike any others I have read. Now ….off to the next installment.

Leigh Talbert Moore’s Behind the Stars series is described as “Red Dawn meets Lost” and despite the short length of Captive the author manages to intrigue, excites and absorb her reader.
Captive begins with a sense of hope; Prentiss is in love and on her way to her last day working as a veterinary assistant. We certainly do not expect her to be kidnapped, drugged and awaken in a labour camp.
Prentiss recognises many of her fellow prisoners from her hometown of Dabb Creek, including her brother Braxton, but this does not comfort her. She is unsure where they are and why.
Prentiss’ story alternates between flashbacks, which upset her but keep her fighting and her recount of daily life working on the farm.
Leigh Talbert Moore ensures that Prentiss’ fear becomes tangible to the reader and we understand her confusion at the behaviour of her friends and the conversations amongst her captors.
As Captive ends we see more of Prentiss’ bravery, even as she discovers that long boxes, shaped like coffins, are being buried on the grounds of the camp.

As I finish this review, Learning to Spy is open on my Kindle.

*I received an eBook copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review.*

‘Captive’ is the first episode of the novel ‘Behind the Stars’. It’s about a farm girl, Prentiss Pucket. After her graduation in two weeks, she and her boyfriend, Jackson, are going to get married and live a happy life on Jackson’s father’s farm. But suddenly, Prentiss is kidnapped. She wakes up in a sort of a camp with some people she recognises, inter alia, her brother. Jackson is nowhere to be seen. The people in the camp have to fulfil tasks in groups. Prentiss wants to escape badly.

I give this novella 4 stars. This book is very unique, so different from other books. I was confused throughout the whole book. The flashbacks about her life before the kidnapping are interesting. They show us how normal her life used to be. The book is very mysterious, I really want to know what happens next in Learning to Spy. It’s a great concept.

Prentiss works for a veterinarian and has a boyfriend named Jackson. On her last day of work, she is kidnapped. The story then alternates between what is currently happening to her and flashbacks of her past where we get to know her a little better.

There are other kids that have been kidnapped, too. She knows some of them, like D’Lo, Jackson’s best friend, and she goes to him to get answers, specifically about where Jackson is, but he’s different and acts like he doesn’t know her. The other kids are acting strange, too. I like how Prentiss has a plan and isn't willing to give up yet.

There are lots of questions to be answered and we get a few answers but then more questions. The most burning question, though, is who are the people who kidnapped them and what do they want? I think this is an intriguing beginning and am looking forward to reading more installments!

I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

***Prolific Spoilers Ahead***

I can pinpoint the exact point at which I decided Captive was going to be a disaster. I'd already put up with a high schooler talking seriously about getting married and settling down and the truly bizarre notion of numerous teen and young adult inhabitants of a tiny town being kidnapped, drugged and... umm, forced to eat steak? And then the heroine Prentiss tells us that she reckons Communists are to blame. That the Russians have teamed up with the Chinese, to kidnap Americans and make them work on their farm. I mean, seriously

1) Why would any nation start a global war just to get a few farmhands, many of whom aren't even trained? Especially when Russia has a hell of a lot of land and really doesn't need American farmland and China has, what, around a billion more citizens than the US and really wouldn't need their manpower.
2) This book is not set during the Cold War, so why the fixation on Communists? McCarthyism ended more than sixty years ago for crying out loud.
3) This makes the heroine seem like one of those morons that throw around the word 'commie' to describe anyone or anything left of the far right. An idiot ranting on a message board in some dismal corner of the internet.

Sadly, this was in Chapter One. Still, I decided to persevere. I thought Captive might get better. It got worse. The heroine decides she'd like to be a doctor on a whim, because she "likes giving shots". No mention of the fact that she could clearly never afford med school and doesn't have much in the way of intellect.* She is obsessed with her white tank top. She never corrects her boyfriend for flirting with other people, but slutshames away. She makes the weirdest assumptions: for example, that her friend might have been castrated because he seems calm and a bit spaced out. She gives us this American rah rah rah must be a good patriot and fight the evil Communists. Evil Communists, who, apparently, as well as wanting to "work for the common good"**, want to trick their farmhands into going on tv shows and claiming to have been probed by aliens. I wish I was kidding.

Nothing to worry about, though because Prentiss has it all figured out: the kidnappers can't be aliens because aliens have "skinny little bodies and big bald heads with giant black eyes" and don't show their families affection. And she's decided that there's another farm, which can join forces with hers and fight back against the Communists/aliens. Who cares that there's no evidence of another farm or that she'd have to be able to escape in the first place to try and find one? Nothing is insurmountable when the sleazy boyfriend, pressuring her into having sex in just about every flashback, could be out there waiting to be manly, and save her AND the free world.

Uh huh. Sure.

*Or at least not until later.
** How horrific.

I was hooked from the first sentence. Her descriptions paint the scenes and characters beautifully - Prentiss leapt to life before me, and I loved her instantly. Spunky, young, full of life, sure of her future: like we all are as seniors in high school.

The story took me along, and I did not struggle to keep up. I loved the abruptness of her life changing when she was abducted. It surprised me, even though I knew it was coming. The little glimmers about her captors entice in a beautifully frustrating sort of way - the way that makes you discover what's happening along with her.

The pages turned themselves, and my only complaint was when I came abruptly to the end. I can't even call this a cliff-hanger: it didn't stop at the end of the story; it literally stopped in the middle of a scene. This was it? I was almost angry - I'd been so taken in by the story, so wrapped up in discovering with Prentiss what happened, who these people were, where they'd come from, what was going on in the world - and then felt like the car in which I was driving slammed into a brick wall. My advice: don't read this until you can read all of them in sequence, so as to not experience this unpleasant and unfinished "ending".

I hadn't realized this was a teaser, and I wish she'd have finished this installment of the story, brought it to a true cliff-hanger where the scene ended and left me wondering what happened next in sequence. I wasn't wondering what happened *next*; I was wondering "how does this scene end?" It obviously hadn't ended in Prentiss's world, and it jarred me back to reality. Even a cliff-hanger ending has some semblance of closure, the finishing of one story, with an opening for one part of the story to continue.

Wonderful writer; excellent story. I loved that I really did not know where the story would go next. Beyond the fact that we know she'll try to escape, that she'll rise to be more than she ever knew she could be. Prentiss inspired me, reminded me of my capability, my innate fight to live and live free. I love her spunkiness and ingenuity, love that she's going to grow as a person through her journey.

This is the first I've read by her, and I'm excited to read more. Preordered the rest of the series; can't wait until it automatically downloads on Dec 31. Still upset at the way this one ended.

Well.. Captive is a phenomenal start to a great series. The cover seemes catchy enough, and the premise was why I was interested in this book. At first, I was expecting Shocklym Syndrome, but the story completely blew me away. It has it's itty bit of SS, but it's not as extreme as it should sound. It sounded more of a love story that is actually romantic and different. This is quite unique from a lot of Young Adult novels I have read.

The protagonist Prentiss is from the south, Mississippi to be exact - she might seem like a typical country girl but she has big dreams. She wants to have a good future for herself and her family. She is intelligent, caring, and kind. I liked her personality, she had spunk and spark. I like courageous heroines, more than the ones who require a hero to the rescue. One day, Prentiss get's kidnapped. She is told to believe that the military has invaded her town, and has kidnapped everyone. Of course, that is not the truth though.

This book is Prentiss' journey, and as the reader we travel along with her. She has flashbacks, so the story does switch from past to the present. Her abduction is a mystery, even the reader isn't aware what actually happened and why. Prentiss decides to escape, but no one is willing to help her out. I'm glad this wasn't a predictable novel, although when I did get the hint - I figured out the truth.

I did like - no I loved the paranormal aspect of the novel. I was easily hooked on reading the novel from the first chapter, the author has written it such a precise and a light way. I did like the gradual build up between the two main characters as well - their chemistry was amazing! Captive does have a love triangle, but it's different which is why I liked it.

Captive is a fascinating read, I enjoyed reading it beginning to the end. The story is simple, and not as complex. It has a great concept, and I look forward to reading more of the author's books. This is part of a series with 6 books. Captive does end on a cliffhanger which depresses me, however, I cannot wait to read the next installment of the series! It is easily one of my new favorite novels, I would have liked a longer book though - however, this is only just the teaser to the series. I would rate it 4 stars.

Prentiss Puckett is the main character. Growing up in a small town in south Mississippi, raised by her father who happens to be a drunk and brother who looks to God for guidance.
She isn’t your typical young woman. She doesn’t fuss over her looks, her clothes or boys. The only man she cares about is her fiancé Jackson. She knows she isn’t leaving her small town and she is good with that. She makes the best of what she has and plans to become a veterinarian.
Her life is changed while she walks to work one day. She is kidnapped and finds herself and others from town being held at a camp of sorts. Her captures keep them cleaned, clothed and fed but she is determined to escape and find her fiancé. Setting a plan in motion to befriend the capture she is forced to teach and work with, she never expected the feelings she starts to have for him. When secrets are revealed and the people she thought she knew show their true colors, she never expected to take on the role of becoming a Hero.
This book reminded me of Roswell with a little bit of Red Dawn. It different from anything I have ever read. Nothing is what is appears to be and then you have the Star-crossed lovers. Leigh did a great job of having angst, fear, happiness, triumph and of course romance. The chemistry between the characters is wonderful. There is a bit of a love triangle but it isn’t out of control.
There are six books in this series and I can’t wait to see what happens! If you love a little bit of Science fiction mixed with survival and romance, then look no further.

I was given an ARC for an honest review

"You’re my only cheerleader.” He looped his arm around my neck and pulled my head to his lips, pressing them against my temple. The warmth of his kiss eased the fist in my chest, and I inhaled his smell of cut grass mixed with sweat.

This book is the first I have read by this author and I have to say that this book literally blew me away. It is so different from anything I have ever read. I love the fact that from page one I was confused as to what was going on, but for the first time I loved that about a book. If that makes since. It kept me intrigued and excited to see what was going to happen next.

The character Prentiss may be a simple country girl, but she is compassionate, smart with a good head on her shoulders, and just wants the people she loves and cares for to be safe and out of danger. She takes it upon herself to find her way out of a situation that is a far cry from easy. I loved how even though Jackson isn't in the picture, we still get to meet him through dreams and flashbacks that has me swooning big time for him. But I feel things are not as they seem. A relationship that perfect can't last, or can it?!

Thank Leigh Talbert Moore for this opportunity to read your book. I loved every minute of it. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Captive is the first installment of a serial, Behind the Stars. I didn't know too much about it going in, which was probably a good thing, because that's really helped the suspense!

In this first part, Captive, Prentiss is a fairly ordinary hick type girl. She has a boyfriend, Jackson, knows all about farming (Jackson's supposed to inherit his Dad's farm eventually, so all their plans include that) and also works part time with the town vet. Its these skills that become very important later on.

On a normal routine day, Prentiss is kidnapped and wakes up to a "farming concentration camp" is the best way to describe it. Its full of kids from her town, including her brother and some other friends, but Jackson is not there. No one knows what's going on, but they are assigned work shifts in the dairy barn, potato fields, and corn fields. They also appear to have been drugged as most kids seem almost zombie like.

Prentiss is not one of these kids. She spends most of this installment trying to figure out how to bust out of the camp. But what she learns just creates more questions...

So far I'm liking this story. The mystery element really has me hooked, and I really like Prentiss as a character. We also get flashbacks of her and Jackson, whom I like as well. I have a few theories as to what's going to happen next, but nothing concrete. I can't wait to find out!

WOW, where do I begin.... Leigh has done it again. This time she has written something that I can't even imagine what is going to happen. I am completely enthralled with this book. Prentiss (love this name) and Jackson have been together since forever. They know they are going to get married and they will get the farm that Jackson's dad has promised him. On her way to her internship with the Vet, something happens. She gets taken. She doesn't know by whom, and she doesn't know why. Is this the apocolypse? Is this WWIII and the Russians have teamed up with North Korea and China and invaded the United States Eastern seaboard?

Dear lord there are so many questions that I have, and I am dying to know what is going on. The mystery that Leigh has written in this book as left me itching for more. I can't even think about what is going to happen next. All I know is they are working on a farm and the people that are holding them there are scary. They have guns and they mean business. You NEED to read this book, and then the next several that are after this! I loved Leigh's work in the past but this just blew her other works out of the water!! I can't wait to read what she writes next!!

Prentiss Puckett is a small farm girl from Dabb Creek, Mississippi. She has everything planned. As soon as she gets out of school, her and Jackson, her boyfriend are going to get his father’s farm, get married, and create a life for themselves. But on the way to the last meeting with Dr. Green, the local veterinarian she is kidnapped.

She wakes up at an odd complex and sees others from Dabb Creek. A couple are friends and others are associates from school. Jackson is not there, there are no adults, but Prentiss recognizes her brother.

The kids are going to be a type of slave labor. They are fed steaks and eggs for breakfast and then split up to farm, take care of the cows, or other tasks like burying coffin like boxes. Everyone seems to be drugged or they have given up hope. But Prentiss can’t just give up. She knows she has to get out. As long as she can get to Jackson everything will be ok.

I like Prentiss and her spunk. She is not going to let being trapped stop her from trying to escape. Although all she can think of is having Jackson save her and everyone, when you find out about her past you can understand why she does that. I can’t wait to see what happens in Learning to Spy.

This book is summarized as Episode 1 because it begins with a story about a girl who gets captured by some type of organization and then ends on chapter five leaving you with a lot of questions. What kind of organization is this? If we rebel, what are they capable of? Prentiss is forced to believe that it is the military invading her town and kidnapping everyone, but then there are speculations about non-human activity.

Overall, I will say that Leigh Talbert Moore did an outstanding job with this first book of the series. She allows the story to be simple and not too complicating but at the same time, it slowly builds up complexity. I recommend this book to all of my club members. It is a little more feminine in my opinion so guys, you may not want to read unless you are interested in broadening your horizons and taking the leap. I say this only because the book is from Prentiss's point of view. You are constantly reading about her thoughts and her actions as opposed to another person's standpoint.

This author does a spectacular job of incorporating a southern girl with big dreams living in a small town in Mississippi. She has CAPTURED my attention and I can't wait to read the second episode called Learning to Spy.

Leigh Moore once again has captured our hearts with a new series Behind the Stars. It is light and suspenseful keeping the reader unsure of what is real.

I have read nearly every single book that Leigh has written, and I have loved them all. Though nothing could have prepared me for her newest story. Up until this point, they've all been contemp romance. Now? Leigh shows off her versatility by tackling paranormal. This is completely different from anything she's written to date, and I am so excited for this new endeavor!

Within mere pages I had a good grasp of who Prentiss Puckett is, and what life was like in Dabb Creek. That is... before she was taken. Then the pace took off, and Prentiss was thrown into a whole world of trouble. She's kidnapped and drugged, but she isn't the only who went missing from Dabb Creek that day. Each chapter begins with a brief glimpse into the past, reliving memories. Though the scenes are brief, I feel like it's such an important aspect of the story, to keep Prentiss rooted, to remind her of what she's fighting for.

The first in a six-part serial novel.

Captive managed to grab me and hold on until the end. It was enough that I wanted to not only read part two immediately (I'm thankful I was sent both parts at once), but I wanted to finish the entire novel.

I found myself invested in Prentiss, her predicament, and her stubborn determination to find her way out at all costs. It was, however, a little concerning that Prentiss seems to have little to no sense of self-preservation. She seems to hang on to the past, and never considers that what was there for her before (family, friends) may not exist any more for her to escape to.

I am, however, glad that Prentiss has a decent head on her shoulders. Paranoia about their captors and their situation spreads through the captured group, but Prentiss manages to keep her skepticism, despite being told outlandish things by people that she trusts. She seems to have a nice balance between being hopeful (her grasp on the past) and being rooted in reality.

This is a strong beginning to a novel with a lot of potential.

Prentiss knows what she wants in life. She has been dating Jackson since 7th grade, and they have plans for their future. Being kidnapped on her way to work was not in any of her plans. So now she has a new plan: to escape, help everyone else escape, find Jackson, and get back to her real plans. There is talk of aliens and World War 3, but nobody knows why they have been kidnapped to work on this farm, or if life outside the farm even still exists.

While Prentiss is trying to figure out what is happening on the farm, she has flashbacks to life before the kidnapping and we learn more about her back story with Jackson.

This is the first part of a 6-part series that will be released between now and the end of the year. It's hard to review a partial book - I think it's a strong beginning to a story. I like how tough Prentiss is and how determined she is, even though she appears to be in an impossible situation.

I definitely want to get started on Part 2….

This is my first time diving into serial novels. As a fan of everything that Leigh Talbert Moore has written in the past I knew that I needed to give this a go. It helps that I was provided with a review copy ahead of time, but that's just in the details.

Reading the first two installments (both Captive and Learning to Spy) was a bit like reading a well written manga story. Without pictures, of course.

Captive pulls you into Prentiss's world and then shatters it seconds later. There is a feeling of unrest and as a reader, you're not sure what is happening. You're just as lost as Prentiss as she is herded around an old summer camp by people who might not be people at all.

There are flashbacks to before her captivity that show you just how normal her life was before she got kidnapped on the way to work. I like these bits, but the parts that shine brightest are the parts that take place in captivity. If you're looking for a read that will keep you on your toes and makes you wish that all the volumes were available to read right now, this is it!

Prentiss Puckett has her life planned out. She is getting ready to graduate, finish her job with Dr. Green, and marry her high school sweetheart. One day changes all of that. She is kidnapped and wakes up in an odd complex, Her brother, Jackson's best friend, her best friend and others from school are there. They are given jobs and go through life day by day as they try to figure out the people that have kidnapped them. Prentiss wants to figure out an escape but no one wants to help her. Everyone is convinced that they will kill them if they try to escape but Prentiss is determined to find a way.

This is a short novella but the characters are well developed. The story does switch between present and past. This helps you get to know Prentiss. The story line is great in that it keeps you guessing of who the people that have kidnapped everyone are. What do they want with Prentiss and her friends? Why were they kidnapped?

This is a great start to an awesome series. I can't wait to see what happens next.

** I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review**

Behind the Stars was definitely a book that kept me hooked. It started off slow but soon picked up.

Prentiss Puckett is certain of three things:
-Graduation is two weeks away.
-Summer only gets hotter in south Mississippi.
-She’s getting a job with air-conditioning.

She did not expect to be kidnapped walking to work.
And she never expected to become a hero.

First off let me say I loved Prentiss . .I love strong female characters and that describes Prentiss.

I love the love/hate conflict between Prentiss & Gallatin.. it definitely had me going back and forth which she should be with Gallatin or Jackson.

I wouldn't say Behind the Stars is full of action.. it was full of .. it had lots of going on! It took me a little bit to get used to all the flashbacks but it was quick to get the hang of.

Overall Behind the Stars was a good book! This is my first book from Leigh Moore and I'll definitely keep an eye out for her books :)

Captive book 1

Well to say that I was confused from the get go is an understatement. But it was confusing in such a way that made me want to keep reading. Whilst this a really really short read it gave the right amount of intrigue to peak my interest.

I enjoyed the format, though I ultimately don't understand why authors do this episodial format as I just want to keep reading - now! And hate waiting so long doe such a short book.

Anyway, Prentiss is kidnapped whilst walking to work and then the confusion starts. When she comes too she is with others from her town and told that they will be put to work on the farm.

There is talk of war, terrorism and even alien invasion.

I want to know more, more, more :)

The story of a town where all the young adults are kidnapped and no one knows why and where they are. This town is isolated anyway and the kids grew up in farmland and most do not have big dreams. The main character is Prentiss with Jackson- they are in love. Prentiss gets kidnapped, along with others and her goal is to survive and find Jackson, her hero. She does find her brother- a bible thumper who is turning into a zombie by the drugs the captors have given them. They eat eggs and steak for breakfast and are expected to run a farm, churn butter, etc. by groups. No one knows who the captors are and why they are there or how long they will be held. Are they aliens?? We need to read and find out in the sections to continue...this was mainly to set up the story and now the real story begins. I received this from the author via I am a reader in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was a quick read about a girl who's been kidnapped and imprisoned in a prison-farm. Not too bad, right? Sounds like something just enough to spark your curiosity.

The concept in itself is interesting, and it keeps you wondering what's happening and why it's happening. But the build up of this story is nothing short of disappointing. It's way too short and you don't even discover why what's happening is happening. And just when the reader finds something juicy out, it stops abruptly. You need to read part 2 to find out the rest (and pay for it).

Umm, no thank you. I don't have anything against paying to read a sequel, but this story should not have ended where it did. It should have been longer. At best, I'm disappointed. I won't be sticking around for more. Sorry. Go big or go home, lady. Well.... I'll be going home anyway.

This book is really interesting. In a way it makes me think of Hunger Games, but it is different.

Prentiss is walking to work when she sees a man on the side of the road with a body laying beside him. The next thing she knows is her world goes black. Every time she wakes up they make her world go black again. Finally she wakes up with several others. She has no idea what is going on. She recognizes a few people and the person she needs the most is nowhere around. Can she help save the people and get them out? Or will she get scared away from watching someone who was rebelling get killed?

Cannot wait to read book two in this six book serial. Cannot wait to figure out what is happening. Also will Jackson come and help rescue Prentiss? Or is he captured also?

4 stars!

Prentiss is a young inspiring veterinarian assistant. With a wonderful boyfriend, Jackson and great friends, her life is going just as planned. Until she is captured by a clan of people that she questions their human origin.

Determined to escape the farm in southern Mississippi that she is forced to work on she finds allies in other captives. She wants to know if her boyfriend is ok but can she get past the tracking device that has been rumored to be implanted in her arm?

When one captive defies the clan and disappears she realizes that she is in more danger than she first thought.

This is a one of a six part series. Very easy read and I look forward to reading the next.

This is my experience with a Leigh Talbert Moore book but it will definitely not be my last!

I was hooked into this story by the third page! I couldn’t wait to find out what was happening to Prentiss.

I was rooting for Prentiss through the entire book, so inspired to have a young, brave girl as a role model in our strange world we live in today. If I had a daughter I would definitely recommend this novel to her.

I love mystery, intrigue and action, so this book definitely did not disappoint! I loved that I couldn’t download the second book quick enough to continue with the excitement.

This book made me try to read faster and I even caught myself skipping a few sentences ahead to see if I could figure out what was going on a little quicker.

This is an interesting story that begins what I believe is a three or four book series. Why they aren't one novel, I'm not sure. The ending is more like the end of a chapter or section of a longer work than an entire story on its own.

Prentiss is an interesting enough character and I felt bad for her because she was the only one in the camp who seemed to want to change things. I also felt that she was put down too much by her family and boyfriend. She tries to make Jackson sound amazing, but I'm not even sure she's fooling herself. He was selfish and needy, it seemed. I did enjoy the writing and thought that Prentiss was consistent from thought to speech, no drastic changes in her language or anything.
