Harriet and Fletcher Tuke have worked hard to raise their children well. Daniel, the eldest son, has always accepted that his birth father died soon after he was born, and Fletcher has raised Daniel as his own.
But as Daniel comes of age and begins to fall in love with childhood friend Beatrice Hart, he can’t help but wonder about his heritage – his olive skin and dark eyes reminding him daily of the difference between him and his siblings, and between his and Beatrice’s families. Meanwhile, shocking truths about Fletcher’s own family line are suddenly brought to the surface, revealing a connection between the two families.
Daniel’s wish to learn about his bloodline takes him to Europe, where decisions about his future take shape. But will it be one he can share with Beatrice? And as Harriet hopefully awaits his return back home on the farm, she could never imagine that answers to questions about her own family are also just on the horizon.

By the end I loved the book. Especially how the author tells us what happens to all the characters not just the main ones. It was a little tricky getting your head around so many characters at the beginning but well worth sticking it out and finding how they are connected.
Val Wood is one of the great saga authors. I’ve read a few of her books and this one doesn’t disappoint. Great story lines which don’t wain in the middle of the book. Val always develops great characters and doesn’t leave you hanging at the end of the book. A great escapism book.
I so enjoyed this story ..... I fell in love with the characters; nice not to have too many baddies, as historical fiction often does! But I must say that had no idea what was going on for the first few chapters as there were so many characters and so many ‘back-stories’ to everyone’s lives! I got so confused :) And so, in the first 1/3rd of the book I stopped reading, got a pen, and wrote out a family tree! Haha! THEN it all made sense! Loved it thereafter - I enjoyed losing myself in the marvellous travelling around Europe that the 3 main characters did. Wonderful
I struggled to get into this book to start with as it was a long time that’s I’d read the previous book in the chapter, once I got into this book I couldn’t put it down, had me in tears at one point, happy tears I may add.
