Hold Still crackles with tension and a brilliant plot. I really enjoyed every minute of reading this very well written novel. With it's ability to hold my interest from the first word to the last, and all the words in-between this was a pleasant surprise from an author I have not read before.

Something evil is on the streets, picking off prostitutes in the most clever of ways, torturing them, playing with them, raping them...it's the thing of nightmares, trust me. This is the ultimate game of hunt and destroy.

The plot just sizzles from the onset in this great read, the story line is interesting and a bit different from the everyday MO of violent criminals we find in a lot of crime thriller novels. I liked that a lot. It has a bit of an edge this book. I think all crime lovers will like this one. Except some torture and mutilation scenes, not terribly bad but the weaker stomached reader may find them a bit tough going. Me? Piece of cake, it takes a lot to get me with imagery in a book.

The characters are raw, gritty and tough. I loved the determination of Jocelyn to find the criminals and the way she thinks outside of the box. She is not going to stop until he/she/they are caught and escorts and prostitutes can be relatively safe again.

The twists in the plot are good, I had guessed the perpetrator by about the 60% mark but it did not detract from the enjoyment. Plenty of thrills and nerve jangling scenes in this crime thriller. It's extremely well written with a lot going for it. I was not bored for a second.

The pace is constantly up there, keeping you focuses and alert and ready for more. There is nothing I did not like really. I can't really explain why it's not quite a five star read for me as it was excellent. I just didn't have the total fireworks display with it in my readers mind, but very nearly at 4.5 stars.

I received a copy of this book thanks to the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, many thanks.

It took me a few chapters to get into the meat of this book, but the book improved quickly. I liked Jocelyn Rush and her partner, Kevin Sullivan. They had a good rapport. I was also curious about the history of her family’s hushing up the gang rape of her sister. There was lots of action and some romance, and the ending was tied up neatly.

The book did have some problems. Although Rush was younger, she called the shots most of the time. Might have been nice if Kevin got to make more of the decisions. There were times when the cops, including the main characters, were dumb as a box of rocks. Kyle “Friendly Fire” Finch should have been fired from his job long ago. I think the instant attraction between Rush and Caleb Vaughn was over the top; it was meet, touch, and escalated quickly from there. Rush’s daughter was a little too cutesy and annoying.

Three baddies were abducting women, assaulting and raping them. Unfortunately, they were given bail and attacked another woman. If you are sensitive to this situation, you should pass on this book.

In spite of the mostly minor problems, though, the book held my attention. I enjoyed it and already have others by this author to read.

Three depraved men were touring the streets of Philadelphia, kidnapping women, taking them to abandoned buildings, crucifying then raping them. They would then be delivered to the hospital. Detective Jocelyn Rush and her partner Kevin, found the first victim that they knew of, when Jocelyn was in hospital herself after a carjacking that found her three year old daughter, Olivia, in the car. Anita was a friend of Jocelyn's from way back, and the terrible injuries done to her were horrific. Jocelyn was determined that between them, they'd find the perpetrators. Working with the Special Victims Unit, Jocelyn discovered that Anita wasn't the first. But would they discover who was doing these dreadful things?

Hold Still is the 1st in the PI Jocelyn Rush series by Lisa Regan and I quite enjoyed it. Fast paced and action packed, the violence and brutality was on most pages. Olivia was a cutie, Inez & Kevin were good friends to Jocelyn. I've had this one on my kindle since 2021 and am glad to have finally read it. I love the author's Josie Quinn series, and can easily recommend this one to fans.

Detective Jocelyn Rush makes her debit in this crime fiction by this well-known author. With the help of her partner, Detective Kevin Sullivan and the Special Victims Unit, she makes it her responsibility to hunt down whoever is responsible for abducting street women, and then brutally mutilating them before turning them loose.

What they are keeping from the media is the fact that there are three men involved ...one who nails their hands and feet to the floor.

The more they investigate, the more danger they face. And when it becomes personal and the violence hits closer to home, Jocelyn makes a discovery that will have everyone reeling,

WARNING: There are some difficult topics such as rape, torture, prostitution and drug abuse so if these are topics you are not comfortable with, you may want to skip this one.

There is lots of action, fast-paced, numerous acts of depravity and violence. Rush comes with issues ... more anger than anything else. She's carried a family secret around for many years, and those memories kept her from attending her parents' funerals. Her partner tries to keep her grounded ..sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't. The characters are expertly drawn.

I look forward to reading the next book in this series ... COLDHEARTED.

Hold Still by Lisa Regan is a 2014 independent publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hold Still is a dark thriller featuring Jocelyn Rush and her family secrets that intertwine with her current case. When a former street prostitute and drug addict is found crucified and sexually assaulted it becomes a personal case for Jocelyn. Yes, I said crucified. Hands and feet nailed. Nightmare material for sure. If this case weren't stressful enough, Jocelyn is nearly carjacked and her daughter , Olivia, was in imminent danger as a result. Then her sister is arrested... again. The one bright spot in Jocelyn's life, besides Olivia is that she has met a new guy and the really, really have some chemistry. But, other than that, Jocelyn is having a very hard time on her job as she fights every day in a male dominated occupation and is dealing with a little anger issue she is in denial about.
The author did a great job of bringing together the currant sexual assault case and Jocelyn's sordid family secrets and notches the suspense up a little at a time as we become more and more unsure about who is involved and who we can nor can not trust. Good and bad will come from this case and we are left with the hope that Jocelyn and her sister will be able to move forward now and enjoy a little closure and peace.

Overall this is a decent mystery thriller with a few twist and surprises here and there as well as few red herrings. The tone is dark and for those who do not like graphic depictions of violence be aware this book does have some pretty difficult scenes. The subject matter that has haunted Jocelyn for her entire adult life also involves difficult and uncomfortable topics. If you read a lot of crime novels you will find some areas are formulaic and predictable, perhaps you will even be able to connect the dots, however, I enjoy a good gritty crime thriller and this one is pretty good. I think this author is beginning to hit her stride here in this genre.
This one gets a 3.5 rounded to 4.

I was given the book, "Hold Still" by Lisa Regan, published November 11th 2014 by Thomas & Mercer, via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. This award winning author has written a captivating thriller, which is absolutely amazing! The author delivers an intense story that engages the reader from beginning to end; a well written novel with down-to-earth characters, that is truly worth reading. The action doesn't stop.

The novel starts with a carjacking in process, and protagonist, Detective Jocelyn Rush chases after the villain that still holds her daughter in the backseat of the car. From there it's a non-stop thriller, that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Rush is tough, street-wise, smart and can handle herself well. But with Rush, we get to see two sides of her personality; a loving and caring mother, but a troubled unresolved past. You can't help but love and cheer for her.

After saving her three year old daughter, Jocelyn ends up in the ER, and runs into, Anita Grant, a former prostitute from Jocelyn's days on patrol. Anita has been brutally attacked, raped and mutilated, and refuses to talk to anyone. The case is forwarded to the Philadelphia's Special Victims Unit.(SVU) It is here that Anita is finally ready to talk and tell her story...but only to Jocelyn. Three men are stalking on local prostitutes, and brutally mutilating them, by nailing their hands and feet to the floor, and gang-raping them.

The police capture two of the suspects, but the third is still out there! This novel is not for the faint-hearted...it involves the hunt for a sadistic MONSTER!

I highly recommend this novel be read by those who love thrillers. I have read one of her previous novels, "Aberration" and was very impressed. I still plan to read "Finding Claire Fletcher." I look forward to reading more from her in the future!

Lisa Regan, author of the Josie Quinn series, introduces Jocelyn Rush in Hold Still. Jocelyn is a detective with the Philadelphia police department having worked her way up from patrol cop. She is also a single Mom. Olivia may be her niece biologically but Jocelyn is her mother. There is no doubt about that when the story opens and Jocelyn's vehicle is carjacked with Olivia in a carseat in the rear. Jocelyn chases after her car on foot and actually catches up with it. She then proceeds to beat the crap out of the would-be carjacker. The beating she inflicts on the carjacker is so bad that she herself winds in in Einstein Hospital to treat her injuries (she wil also have to attend anger management classes).

While at Einstein she encounters a former prostitute, Anita, she knew from her days as a patrol officer. Anita is now an online escort. Having answered an ad she wound up being thrown into a car, driven to an abandoned house where she was brutally assaulted. Crucified and then sexually assaulted. Jocelyn learns that Anita isn't the first victim of this type of assault. Three men. They started out targeting the street hookers on "the stroll". The notorious Kensington and Allegheny corner of the city. Then they moved to escorts who advertise on Craigslist. Jocelyn believes it is only a matter of time before they escalate and the next victim could be a housewife, a secretary, a school teacher.

A side story is Jocelyn's own past and family secrets. Her sister was the victim of a gang rape when she was fifteen. She wound up a drug addict and a prostitute. Olivia is her daughter but Jocelyn gained custody. It is easy to see how much Jocelyn loves Olivia. Her relationship with her sister is complicated and a struggle. Olivia may be three but she knows bad language when she hears it. I had to laugh when Jocelyn accidently curses in front of Olivia and she says "Mommy!" and points with her crayon to the cuss jar.

For readers who are famiiar with Philadelphia they will recognize many of the places, streets, etc. The author lives in Philadelphia. I have enjoyed most of the Josie Quinn and look forward to reading the next book in the series, Cold-Blooded

this was just an ok read for me. The author made it pretty easy to figure out who "Face" was and there were no real twists. Just another typical good guy chases bad guy bad guy, bad guy doesn't win, with a little romance..

I hope this will not be a theme with the author. Giving away who the bad guy is early on and the amnesia thing has got to stop. Two out of the three of her books have had the main character with amnesia. Still one of my new favorite authors.

This was just ok.

So I’ve wanted to try this author for a while. I love me romantic suspense.
But this author has made it to where you absolutely have to BUY her stuff.
I have Scribd, Audible, KU, Libby and Hoopla. All of which the authors get paid. 3 of which require a monthly subscription payment from me. BUT in all these I can’t get this authors work unless I outright BUY her books or audiobooks.

So I put off reading her work for a long time. Always wondering if her work is just so good she can afford to not make her work available on one of the many forms of available to the average or above average reader.

Well I got my chance to test out this one book. I listened to the audio on Scribd. But of course it’s part of a series and only this first one is available.

-Well I can say I’m glad I didn’t ever buy her stuff. I’m sorry but she is just ok and kinda disappointing for this genre. I was expecting so much more.

-The characters were depressing and not fully fleshed out yes we got some of their past but not anything that endured me to them.

-The romance was horrible. Like just so oddly done. It’s barely there and what’s there was out of the blue and completely random. Not fleshed out at all. The H isn’t introduced till midway then goes from 0-1000 in the blink and of an eye. No build up no tension.
Just boom I’m a hot man and let’s be together.

-I knew who the bad guy was fairly early on.

-The flow was just weird and off putting at times.

-The characters were not always very likable. I wasn’t invested at all
In them personally.

It was just…… ok. I would like to try something else from her.

I wish her stuff was available ANYWHERE.
Authors readers don’t want to always outright buy books anymore. And if I wanted to become a fan of her work I would have to read more and I’m not buying her stuff based on this one so… I guess it’s not ment to be.

This title HOLD STILL by Lisa Regan, well, all I can say is, HOLD STILL for a superb ride.

This starts off with a hijacking of a car where unbeknown to the hijacker, in the back of the car sits a little child. There is more that happens in this instance but I am not going to give anything a way.

They end up in the hospital. There detective Jocelyn Rush whose child was in the car is being seen to at the emergency when she discovers a woman she has history with on the beat [Anita] a well known prostitute. Detective Rush knew that Anita gave up prostitution so was wondering what had happened to her. She discovers not only has Anita been raped, but also crucified. Therein starts a story, a round of stories that lead on to many things and many major happenings.

This sizzled with suspension, crackles with unknown avenues and corners you dare to go around.

Its a very cleverly written book, it certainly kept me on my toes!

Having never read any of Lisa Regan's before this is now going to change. I think I've discovered a new authors to add to my 'thriller' list.

Thanks goes to the author, the publisher Amazon Publishing via Net Galley for providing me with a copy for me to read and review

I don’t read a lot of thrillers, but now that I’ve read two of Lisa Regan’s novel, I’m a total fangirl. This book is fantastic! I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading it, but it starts with a bang, and drew me in fast. Lisa grips readers quickly with an awesome hook, but you’ll also be drawn to her wonderful characters. You instantly want to be BFFs with Jocelyn and you fall in love with her daughter just as fast. Jocelyn is a single mother and a kickass detective who doesn’t take crap from anyone…except for maybe her little girl. You won’t get bored. This book doesn’t have cookie cutter characters like most thrillers out there these days. They’re all different, and right when you think you have them figured out, you’ll realize you had them pegged wrong.
Hold Still is an incredible book with a gripping storyline and dark premise. This intense story has plenty of grit, violence, and thrill to hook you, but surprisingly, it’s the lust that will make you want more. I hope this turns into a series. I REALLY want to know what happens next and I would love to read more about Jocelyn and her family.

This was a real page turner. My first book by Lisa Regan- but I will look out her back catalogue.

Jocelyn became a detective after discovering that the rape her sister survived as a child was 'hidden' by her parents. She vows to uncover the lads responsible.

When a new spate of attacks on escort girls needs investigating , she discovers that one of the girls is a girl she's arrested before. She vows to find out the missing person in their investigation and is pleased to be asked to work on the SVU unit, whilst they investigate due to her connection to the victim.

It wouldn't have anything to do with Caleb?!!!!!!

Lots of twists and turns and suspense. Police thriller at his best- with a bit of family interest thrown in.

Many thanks to Thomas and Mercer and Net Galley for a copy of this book

After reading Abberration, I wanted to read everything this Author wrote!

I have fallen in love with this Author's books, so far I have only found 3 that she has out but will always be on the lookout for anything new from her! She is right up there with Karen Slaughter, Lisa Gardner, which I also absolutely adore. You will not be disappointed by anything this Author writes, she's amazing!

This is an author who is going places for sure. Everything about this book was perfect. The dialogue was excellent--you could see the scenes in your mind's eye. The flow was perfection. The crime itself was depicted in such a way that you cringed but you weren't overwhelmed with too much gory info. I'll definitely be one clicking this author's future works.
Great job, well done.

For a suspense thriller, "Hold Still" was remarkably lacking in suspense, thrills and chills. I found the novel to be a paint-by-numbers affair. The writing style was pedestrian and uninspiring. The characters were flat and uninteresting, and the plot was predictable, and at times, unrealistic.

Before I had read even half the novel, I had a strong suspicion who was the third guy law enforcement was looking for. By the time I reached the part in the novel where Anita's sleuthing occurred, not only was my suspicion even stronger, the info Anita uncovered confirmed it for me.

But speaking of sleuthing, I felt it was highly improbable that given her background, Anita found the information Jocelyn sought in just minutes - when Jos, a trained police officer, had zero clue where to start to begin her search.

Speaking of unrealistic, yeah, uh huh, just like that, Jocelyn hires Anita to work for her. A stronger foundation needed to be laid in order for that to happen, but I guess if you're going to end in a HEA, might as well double down on it!

Other plot points were reminiscent of other thrillers I've read in the past: female lead obtains a love interest (and could the relationship between Caleb and Jocelyn be more underwhelming and cringeworthy?), the culprit takes action to silence the female lead, and the author introduces a misleading suspect. None of these in and of itself is a bad thing, but Lisa Regan just doesn't have the writing chops to do them justice.

"Hold Still" was at least a quick read. I finished the novel in just over one day. But, ultimately, I can't recommend this since I didn't feel the novel distinguished itself from any other thrillers - and here, I use the term loosely.

Lisa Regan has done it again. Hold Still hooks the reader from the start and keeps you captivated with "one more chapter". The plot was fast and entertaining with Lisa's powerful graphic style intertwined, giving you a roller coaster of emotions. Very familiar settings for any Philadelphian and very real characters. The heroine Jocelyn and her daughter Olivia are such well developed characters I felt I knew them. This book should be in every suspense readers queue. You won't be disappointed.

Lisa Regan knows how to keep a reader awake- with a story you can't put down! And when you do, you're still haunted by the what-if's and bad guys Lisa creates. The MC, Jocelyn, is a character I can only hope to bump into again...perhaps a series?

I'm getting less than enthused with the disconnected, tough, anger management challenged female cop. I've read so many that I can't differentiate between them. Rush is one of those characters. And her male side kick partner is a bit of an enabler plus moments of TSTL. Rush has to figure everything out.

Rush's childhood (and her sister's) issues are interesting and in the end convenient. It adds a good element to her character.

That being said I liked the plot and some of the the supporting cast of characters. The crime itself is very cringe worthy and the less specifics, the better.
Some readers may need a rape trigger warning.

Could be a good series and I would read more.

Jocelyn Rush is a character in whom I am happy to invest concern. Not too over-the-top tough, she is engaging, emphatic and compassionate. This book is a winner in every way. Well written, the plot grabbed and wafted me to the finish line without dropping a moment of interest along the way.

Yes, I did pick the bad bloke early in the piece, but this in no way spoiled this excellent story for me. The romance was realistic and touching. Regan brought all her characters to life, investing them with both good and bad qualities, even most of the evil doers.

Now I am hoping that this author is, right, now typing her fingers to the bone with a new book featuring Jocelyn and Anita chasing the crooks from their private investigation business!

No one does creepy crime fiction better than Lisa Regan. I loved her protagonist, Jocelyn, especially her flaws. If only I could kick ass like she does quite literally. Yet as tough as she is, both as a cop and a protective mother to her young daughter, Jocelyn has some serious ghosts haunting her, and they manage to slither their way in during her toughest case, bringing full circle a family tragedy she has never really dealt with, all while investigating the most heinous crimes against women she's ever seen. Tense, harrowing, and chillingly real, Regan has woven yet another engagingly sinister tale that will leave your nerves on edge right up to the frightening end.

I'm not sure what to think of this book. It was an easy read but I didn't like the lack of suspense in what was supposed to be a thriller. I figured out who the bad guy was barely one third into the book and I thought it couldn't be that convenient. Unfortunately I was wrong. It was THAT obvious. The pacing was slow and nothing much seems to happen throughout the book.

I also couldn't warm up to the protagonist, Jocelyn and her romance with the fellow cop was so forced and juvenile. Felt like the love story came from some young adult romance book instead. Man meets woman and they fell in love immediately at first sight. Geez.

Fast paced and engaging mystery!

The narrative is compelling and the investigation is very well written. All of the characters are layered and complex, and Jocelyn serves as good narrator to the story. Only complaint is that the romance is incredibly rushed to the point where it makes absolutely no sense. Still a great and entertaining read!

RECENSITO DA SIENNA PER IL BLOG DI "LIBRI E SOGNALIBRI"
description

Buona lettura!

(I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.)

After years as a patrol cop, detective Jocelyn Rush is almost immune to the depravity that stalks the meaner streets of Philadelphia…almost. After saving her three-year-old daughter from a carjacking, she ends up in the emergency room—and discovers that Anita, a former prostitute and acquaintance from her old days on the beat, has been hideously mutilated in a brutal assault.
With the help of her partner and Philadelphia’s Special Victims Unit, Jocelyn discovers that Anita isn’t the first victim of these attacks and it looks like she won’t be the last. When the violence hits closer to home, Jocelyn knows she must do whatever it takes to stop the sadistic attacker—even if it means confronting a terrible secret from her painful past.

Before I chose to read this book, I did a bit of research of reviews and what I found was a bunch of 5-star reviews...and that made me decide to grab this one and give it a go...

Let me just start by saying that the thing I really liked about this story was the actually story-telling - I felt like the author and I were having a quiet conversation and she was filling me in on the story. That's how I felt with the style of writing. It was welcoming and easy to read.

Having said that - well, I don't know what book those 5-star reviewers were reading (or if they have ever read a romantic thriller novel before), but I am hazarding a guess to say it wasn't this one. It is by no means a bad book -just a pretty average one: once you work out the bad guy halfway through the book, the thrill is definitely gone; the "romance" between Caleb and Jocelyn was terrible and had no real substance to the story; and the way that Anita was able to be the "sleuth" of the story when a police officer couldn't do the job was really pushing my boundaries of belief...

Anyway, not at all a bad book - but certainly not at the top of my thrillers list.

Outstanding!

This was one of those books that I had a difficult time reading every word. I would get so excited, or scared, that I would want to skim ahead to the next dialogue to find out what would happen next! Then I would chill out and attempt to read it all. She kept me guessing until the end. Loved the characters, loved the plot. Can't wait to read the next one! Highly recommend.
