By rights DS Lasser should be happy, engaged to the woman of his dreams, and just back from a two-week vacation, life is sweet.
Yet when he discovers that a local sex offender has been mutilated and murdered, all thoughts of harmonious bliss are quickly annihilated.
No one would shed a tear for Colin Philips, no one would stand at his grave and mourn, but when another body turns up in gory bite sized chunks it soon becomes apparent that Philips was only the start.
Someone is stalking the streets of this windswept northern town, someone with a burning hatred and a long list of names to work with.
The killer is on a mission to rid the town of the perverts and child molesters, and he always seems to be one-step ahead of the law.
The authorities are struggling to cope; cuts and job losses at the council are making it an impossible task to monitor the offenders and the killer is taking full advantage of the situation.
Lasser soon finds himself ensnared in a web of lies and deceit as those responsible for using the town as a dumping ground try to cover their tracks at any cost.
To make matters worse local reporter Michael Brewster is leading the witch-hunt, determined to lay the blame for the killings at Lasser's feet.
As the nights draw in and the body count rises, Lasser must hunt the maniac as he spirals out of control, though even in his madness Lasser realises that the killer is working to an agenda and he isn't working alone.
Rob Roughley lives in the North West of England (God's coal bunker, the land of the wedding cake made by placing three meat pies on top of one another and whippets on lengths of string) He is the author of eight crime/thriller novels featuring DS Lasser. The novels are set between the run down streets of a northern town and the beautiful yet desolate west Pennine moors. If you love your crime fiction crammed with square jawed heroes driving flash cars and glorious women who shimmer with inner light, then the DS Lasser novels are not for you. However, if you prefer your characters to be flawed, with a sprinkling of dandruff and old acne scars, the plots to be laced with dark humour, then give them a try. 1 The Needle House 2 The Way that it Falls 3 Tethered to the Dead. 4 Twisted Coming soon: 5 More Equal than Others 6 Vanished Beneath 7 Riven 8 Bad Self
I understand all the 5 star reviews - it is a compelling series - but.
The author clearly has a difficulty with English words and grammar. He misuses the words were and where, to and too, and of and off repeatedly. Desks do not have 'draws'. None of these titles so far have been proof-read other than with the use of a spell-checker. Such a useless device will of course not baulk at words contained in the dictionary but fails totally to recognise when they are used in an incorrect context. "How did he fair?" "His boss didn't give him a descent hearing" "He tried to diffuse the situation".
The author also has little knowledge of police procedure or equipment. British cops do not carry night sticks, and never have. Yet these items are trotted out in every single book.
All of these things, though no doubt regarded by some as trivial, completely spoil the reader's enjoyment of what are essentially good stories.
This was a fair story absolutely ruined by sloppy proof reading. Multiple errors. Chapter 22 has the same person, Brewster in his car and his living room at the same time!
You’re guaranteed an imaginative plot that will twist and turn and twist again when you join DS Lasser on another investigation. In this case, it’s a twisted vigilante, wreaking havoc on the Wigan’s sex offenders.
The pace and tension are relentless, the dark, dark humour that runs through the stories is delicious. The banter and double act with DCI Bannister are the highlight of yet another great story from Robin Roughley.
It’s intense, gritty and shocking, but filled with humanity, which shines through in Lasser’s determination to bring the killer to justice, no matter what. His romance and relationship with Medea adds another welcome dimension to his character and the story.
This is a pretty grim but very exciting book all the same.
I can't not give 5* for the DS Lasser books, as each one is just as good as the previous. The plot in this one is pretty gruesome in parts, so not one to read if you don't like blood and guts murders of which there are plenty. I think it's about time Lasser is made a DI again, as he's far better than Bannister who really needs a kick in the proverbial. As well as dealing with this case, Medea his fiance`, has an ex who had become a problem. There is plenty of action in this book which is what I like, and kept me reading long into the night to finish it. Lasser is definitely a series I will continue reading as long as Mr R continues to write them.
Lasser is hard working copper, who by the "Grace of God" has found Medea, a rare beauty, who's willing to put up with the crazy work hours, etc. and still loves Lasser, enough to get engaged to him.
Lasser's boss has his own personal problems, which unfortunately spill over into Lasser and Medea's life. Again, Medea's that rare special person who takes it all in stride.
While the books could be read as stand alones, I recommend that you read them in order, because things do happen.
Great storytelling, so far each book has been gripping, the story like the rest full of twists and turns, characters have become old friends and I’m fully invested in the tale. Thanks to the author and on to the next one.
What a brilliant series this is turning out to be. You really feel as if you are there, with the characters, as you are reading. It's a great story line. Robin Roughley is a great author.
Yet again a captivating, thrilling page turner from Robin. Lasser is such a likeable character with his take on life and approach to others. He has finally found his true love and can’t believe it is real, bless him! Meanwhile someone is “sorting out” the rough characters from the local town and literally leaving them in pieces. A hack wants to get back to his days of glory and wealth and may just have found the way to do it… or not. A gripping, enthralling read with a brilliant story line. Short punchy chapters not only keep the book moving along at a pace but also means that you can pick up and put down (if you can!). One of those reads that you just have to keep going to the end. Robin as ever describes scenes and characters in such a way that you can see them in your mind’s eye. I would so love this series of books to become a TV drama. A highly recommended read.
Robin Roughley. Book 5. MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS. This is book 5 in this fantastic series. Like me you will love this book. It is not for the faint hearted, as it is gruesome at points. The relationship between Lasser & Bannister is brilliant with humour added as well. When paedophiles start turning up dead with body parts chopped off, it's time for Lasser to get involved, this series of books is without doubt one of the best out there. Highly recommended. 5+* 25 August 2015.
What can I say I don't normally start a series of books midway through but as I got this book free i thought I'd give it a go to call it a bloodbath is an understatement and the subject matter a bit shocking but once you start reading the book you can't put it down if all the series are as good I'll be very happy to read them all
