Charlee never planned to return to her city, but life had other ideas. After getting ghosted, her circumstances forced her back under the same roof as her miserable narcissistic mother. Struggling to rebuild her life, she craves peace, but instead, she stumbles upon something—or someone—unexpected.
Running into the mother of her childhood best friend, Carrington, reopens a door she thought was closed. Carrington, now older and wiser, has weathered his share of storms and carries the weight of a breakup he never saw coming. Even though years have passed, the spark between Carrington and Charlee is undeniable.
As Charlee and Carrington reconnect, the line between friendship and love begins to blur. Their growing bond is tested when their past rears its head, threatening to pull them apart. Together, they must navigate lingering doubts, and the challenges of blending their lives.
3.5 stars Solid foundation, but frustrating characters held it back.
The bones of this story were really strong, the setup, the world, even the pacing for the most part. I could tell there would be a part two, but some scenes felt unnecessarily stretched just to lay groundwork for the next book, and it took away from the impact of this one.
Charlee, in particular, tested my patience. Her dynamic with her mom was exhausting to read, it made no sense that she could “stand on business” for a man but completely fold when it came to her own boundaries. Her mother hasn’t shown her love, compassion, or respect at any point, so the constant need to force a relationship felt more frustrating than sympathetic.
Carrington also started to irritate me. Why is he still entertaining Naylor? They aren’t friends. He got what he needed, and it’s clear he doesn’t like the man, so why keep that door cracked open? And I can already see the ex-girlfriend plotline coming but I don’t get the point of it. He’s been firm and direct, so the drama feels unnecessary unless it’s forced.
The villains were truly villainous so credit to the author there but it was hard watching two otherwise smart people ignore their instincts over and over again.
There’s potential for part two to bring things full circle, but I’m hoping for some serious character growth. It’s not an eager anticipation though
Okay, I was riding along I-85 just cursing along with Charlee and Carrington. Yes, baby girl was in the back seat with me. Charlee had to move in with Carrington and his mother because her mom is a royal bewitch. Anyway, just as we rounded the curve, out of nowhere, the car just stops. Maybe, in part two we'll learn what happened.
This is not what I expected from this author. It starts off very slow. Carrington and Charlee's relationship just got started when, bang, it continues.
